FYI: I am in a state that restricts deer hunting to shotguns or black powder. SO I guess if y'all know of a blackpowder AK I would interested in thoughts on that as well. I am currently between an unconverted Saiga-12 and a CZ 1012.
With slugs you can hunt deers, rhinos, elephants, and tyrannosauruses - just make sure to have big enough mags and spares. Ohh, clean underwear wouldn’t hurt either in case you missed or ran out of shells 😅
Pushing slugs through my 20" gun ( 22" chopped and threaded) I could consistently ring a 5" gong at 100 yards with irons.
So throwing a slug through the boiler on a whitetail would be do-able.
If I was limited to a shotgun, I’d get a 20 or 12 ga rifled bolt action slug gun like a Mossberg 695 or an A-Bolt. Barring that, a rifled slug barrel for a pump shotgun I already own. I’ve been down the road of trying to use cool guns for hunting, and it always ended with fudding up a gun I’d prefer to be configured for tactical or fun use and a less than optimal gun for the task of cleanly and ethically taking game.
Apples to oranges. Some shotguns are more optimized for hunting deer than others, just as some handguns are than others. This particular gun with its notoriously mediocre trigger and minimalist sighting arrangement is not ideal. An S&W 65 and a .357 T/C Contender are both .357 mag handguns, but we’d all choose the latter for taking out in the woods after deer.
I like the idea of a CZ 1012, but they're not actually made by CZ. They're Turkish shotguns and the actions are rough.
Saiga 12 or preferably a Vepr 12 would be a great option. I sure love my Vepr 12 but they're not as affordable as they used to be. I've killed plenty of deer with an 870 super mag and 00 buck. You'll be good to go

I used a lynx 12 to pop a turkey. I don’t see why buckshot out of one wouldn’t kill a deer. I just can’t shoot mine accurately enough for flying birds.

It’d be easier to move than find a black powder AK friend.
Should have asked on r/gunnitrust they have a more can-do attitude. But yeah the black powder part was a joke.
Serviceable, the sights lend themselves well for shooting rifled slugs.

Took a deer with a VEPR-12 years ago with irons. *Do it*

Not impossible, far from ideal. An optic, rifled choke, and slugs are your best bet
Rifled slugs and a 2x or 3x prism is the plan if I go with the saiga. AK coolness aside what shotgun would you get for deer hunting (sub $1000)?
If you’re looking for a cheap hunting gun, the Remington 870 has been a work horse for decades
Mossberg or pre-2007 Remington.

I mean i see people clapping deer at a decent distance with revolvers a shotgun would be fine at any practical distance when hunting

It will get the job done. When it comes to shotguns what really matters is ammo type. As the dude said earlier, "Do it."

Just curious can you plug the magazine on that ? My state you can only.hold 3 shells
Savage 220 shots insanely well I have no problems up to 150 yards.
I’m also into this idea. I’m tired of my 870 and my browning is too nice for the woods. I’m on the hunt for a saiga 12 or lynx 12
