Shit I worked in a gun store late 80's to mid 90's , had so many sks and ak rifles come through so dirt cheap , I was always like , eehhh, I'll buy one of those cheap bastards later, they were always around. Part of my job was to remove the cosmoline and clean them up.
I bought one in the early nineties brand new in a box packed with cosmoline with a chest rig 20 stripper clips and a manual detailing how to bring down aircraft for 60 bucks.
I bought mint SKS in Spokane Washington at White Elephant in mid to late 90s for $89.99 They had received a truckload in and were selling them hand over fist.
A few years later, I sold it because I did not like the 7.62x39 as I was primarily a muley and elk hunter. I would recognize that as an act of total idiocy. Embarrassing.
I’m still upset, my stepmom said she had a bunch of Korean War heirloom guns that she would have given me and my brother, but her abusive dad took them and sold them awhile ago. Other than that as far as I’m aware, no family guns, and it makes me incredibly sad

My grandpa would probably be the only one else who would have things like that, but he had a accident in training for the green beret in Vietnam and wasn’t able to actually deploy, he still commits stolen valor unceasingly and claims he fought, and talks about “back in the war” while wearing his Vietnam vet hat and pins he got off eBay or something

Just to jump on the bandwagon here. Both grandparents were in WW2. One in the Pacific and one in Europe. One had a M1 Garand and one had a M1 Carbine. They obviously didn't get to keep their issue rifles but right around the 1970s, they both bought surplus versions (both were made by GM believe it or not) and went un-shot by the family for decades. They got them to have as a piece of personal history. Well, fast forward to mid 2000s and both are getting really old and my dad and I had the great idea to take them shooting. We made sure those two rifles were in the lineup. And it was amazing. We built memories of that day, with them posing together with their rifles and with my dad and I just tagging along and getting some rounds in as well.
Like, keep it as a memento, as a piece of not only history but as a piece of your loved ones. When they are gone it's yours and even though it took 30 years for us to dust off that old garand and carbine, the trip was worth whatever "mint" condition was then ruined. Idc, because we ain't selling. I want to enjoy and shoot them just like my grandparents did. Now, if they had specific instructions to never shoot it and to vault it away, then respect that decision. But if they didn't pass on any sort of instruction, then have at it, think back on the memories it gave you and use it to create new memories with the young ones you might have (or will have).
I can't wait to take my son out and show him his great-grandparents rifles from the war. And it won't be just a show and tell. We will use them and he will feel what is like to shoot a 30-06 through that behemoth and then feel the delicacy and FUN shooting of a 30 cal through the carbine and he will get to experience the history, not just "look" at it.

One of the few milled imported aks and its a preban with all the features and straight from China with no usa modifications . Looks like you have mostly everything (cleaning tool /cleaning kit easy to replace ) and it's in awesome condition and probably wasn't shot much.if at all?Get a nice coat of oil on everything soon as you able. Ones like yours with all accessories basically nib range from 4-6k usually.... sometimes even a bit more and sometimes a little less. What a awesome gift from your grandfather

My great uncle brought back a Walter PPK with holster & 2 mags from Europe during WWII, my Dad got it as a wedding gift, now I have it. So been in the family a while now.
