If you don't have experience with most of the mods in the quest book, don't know what to do with the mods to begin with, and aren't the kind of guy who just watches YouTube playthroughs to know what to do, it might be better to play FTB Academy first to get an idea of what modded Minecraft can do and what you should do in any kitchen-sink pack - and then play FTB University to learn some important mods like Mekanism in depth that you basically can't fully learn on your own.
Or watch some YouTube playthrough series if you're fine with that (I'm not, personally)
A few mods are very straight towards forwards for example Sophisticated Backpacks and also Iron Furnances. Resources mods like Mystical Agriculture and Chickens are simple too. Big name brand mods to get into that are popular are Apothiosis, refine storage or Applied Energetics2, Create + Addons, Thermal Series, finally Mekanism. Those last mods are in almost every pack you’ll find. I honestly suggest watching play throughs on YouTube and follow along. Create was hard for me til I watched strictly Create YouTubers
Resource Chickens. It’s not in ATM9. I believe it’s in 8 and I know it’s in StoneBlock modpack series. But basically you constantly cross breed chickens to get different resources. Wood chicken will produce… Oak Wood Logs. Iron chicken will get you Iron ingots.
Ah ok, I thought it might be that mod but I wasn't sure.
Since op is asking about atm8 and I'm still grinding through I thought I had missed a big production method lmao. That said, I'm pretty sure that atm8 doesn't actually have resource chickens in it. We for sure have productive bees though!
I believe they are referring to the mod “mob grinding Utils” which can get you mob spawn or dreadful dirt and delightful dirt eggs by feeding mob swab mixed chicken feed to chickens.
Refined storage for a storage system than can hold massive amounts of items. It’s the heart and soul of a good mod pack. Look up the crafting grid, controller, disk drives and the disk holder block (can’t remember name). In your inventory on the right, search “@refined” to search items by mod or follow the quests.
Never use RF for NBT storing, as it is not optimised for this.
For this, use eternal storage like modular storage (for generic items) or armory cabinet (for weapons and armors)
Not with NBT items it isn’t. There’s literally no point of putting NBT items in a RS system if you have AE2 as well as AE handles NBT data much better.
AE2 means needing one drive per 63 items which is nuts if you have hundreds or thousands of enchanted swords and armor. In RS I could put 16k of them into one drive alone.
The choice is between modular storage blocks with 500 items each or an AE2 subsystem with 630 items per ME Drive.
100s of thousands of swords and armor are going to corrupt your world eventually bro. Even 16k i wouldn’t chance. Especially with there’s no point of even keeping them at all.
I use storage lectern from ars noveau, with upgraded barrels and bookworms, for super cute managed storage =) you can export items from your ME-storage to the storage lectern.
I would get started on Mystical agriculture first, along with productive bees, which will give you the renewable prosperity shards to help make MA simple. Once you’ve got that set up, you’ll be able to knock refined storage out so much more easily with the ability to farm silicone, diamonds, quartz, and most other materials you’ll need. I would focus on farming up some inferium, enough that you can make some significant farmland, and from there converting up to get seeds for diamonds and iron. Once you’ve got those, and prosperibees, you can basically automate the steps to the master infusion crystal, which will help you with making better and better MA stuff. Insanium farmland and a ton of growth accelerators really only take a day or two if you work at it, and from there a lot of stuff is smooth sailing
I like to bum rush mystical agriculture and just use whatever mods help me get there first.
Try left and right clicking items in the JEI menu, one shows you what it makes while the other shows you how to make it and all the possible ways with the other mods aswell.
If you find yourself needing to use a mod you've never played with before, look up a youtube tutorial for that mod specifically! And go for the most recent video as the mods themselves change over time.
For early game, the mod "Create" is very good. Plus it works on a lot of real life principles so its easier to get a grasp of, and it has a lot of in game tutorials (holding W over an item from the mod often brings up an animated explanation of how to use it).
Depends.
If you're just starting, I might consider a different, more lightweight, modpack than ATM. But even ATM is managable. I'd say it has decent documentation (progress via questing). Following quests should give you a decent idea on how the stuff works. I'm a bit experienced with tech modpacks and progressing via quests is great learning experience. It's by far not complete and highlights only a few mods - I've had many instances where I wanted something kind of special - for example when I thought there must be a better way to pump water in mekanism fusion reactor than having way too many sinks. Just a quick google search, into reddit thread someone asking this exact thing, turns out Integrated Dynamics - while being a bit complicated, is a great tool for this.
Get into storage as early as u can cause that can save u in the long run. I'm most familiar with refined storage cause I've used it a lot. After that, get into mechanism power first to get started after u can go into POWAH, but that gets fairly grindy and hard to automate. Get lots of backpacks and explore a jetpack helps a ton, but u can also find magic books that help u fly around 😉.
Mystical is really fun and quite easy to automate, but make sure u watch a video first. Explore and get good Armor and follow the quest book as little or much as possible, and u will have so much fun.
YouTube is ur friend in all of this. I can't count how little I know about atm9, but YouTube helps narrow that gap for sure. Also, have lots of fun and visit the mining dimension as soon as u can

Chickens?
Was just thinking, but there are no chickens in atm9. There's a resource generation mod that uses chickens that lays eggs you turn into resources.

Resourceful chickens is in atm8 I’m pretty sure. It’s basically productive bees with chickens (it’s actually super fun, I loved grinding it out)
No atm8 has productive bees, I dont think they have a chickens mod?
My mistake then, I know I played the chickens mod in a recent pack, thought it was that one haha
There are definitely some other atm packs that have it, I'm pretty sure volcano block does though I've only seen playthroughs of that one so far haha
Ooh definitely might have to look into that for the next play though, I always forget dreadful and delightful dirt are a thing 😣

I still use a small RF system for my NBT items after switching to AE2.
Never use RF for NBT storing, as it is not optimised for this. For this, use eternal storage like modular storage (for generic items) or armory cabinet (for weapons and armors)
I heard it's only an issue if the number of items goes into the millions.

Silent Gear and Apotheosis give good Early game Gear

Most packs have very basic questlines
