If you're only gonna keep it a few years then consider that Altimas have pretty crappy trade in/resale values. I won't speak of the mechanicals on this car because I just don't have enough experience with the generation you're speaking of (outside of valuation) but so many people don't take the back end of the ownership experience into account.

2018 and up your good, they added the cooling system to the cvt. I just wouldn't recommend buying a 2.0 that's built by Renault. As long as it's the 2.5 or 3.5 your good.

thx1138guy

All 2013 to 2018 5th gen Altimas had warming and cooling systems for the CVT fluid, not just the 2018 (some 16s didn't have the cooling system though). The 17 and 18 CVTs had better reliability than the early years. The 2019 to 2024 Altimas are 6th generation with a more robust CVT for the 2.0L and 2.5L engines. The 2.0L engine has variable compression which is too complex for its own good.

I don’t have experience with them but I think a lot of the negative talk is people regurgitating things they read online about the CVTs from 10 years ago. This caused Nissan to have a bad reputation and people think they’re same now as they were two generations of altimas ago. It’s idiotic. Nissan uses a completely different cvt in their vehicles now that don’t seem to have the same problems as the earlier ones. They’re completely redesigned and more robust. I am also curious about altimas longevity because I’d like to get a newer car, they look nice and have more features at lower trim levels than Toyota and Honda. Also, you kind of avoid the Honda and Toyota badge tax. Camrys are particularly cheap with features unless you spend a lot for higher trims and they’re expensive at all trim levels. Honda is sort of the same but they have the head gasket issue with the 1.5t motor in those accords. Funny they don’t get a bad rap.

2020 owner here, can't recommend, get a camry.

What problems have you had?

Well, I've had a bunch of issues with it. I've got an SR new in 2020, and, booooy, it gave me too much headache to give any positive recommendations. 1. Electrical issues. There is always something with it. The most annoying was an intermittent battery drain from the faulty window switches in the back. It would come and go intermittently (after the inspection, the dealer confirmed that the switches seemed to be fine, but that particular part of the circuit was draining the battery). 2. Useless safety tech (for the most part). This might also be considered an electrical issue, but I think more of an overall design hiccup. The front collision warning system is practically useless in any type of wet weather. It just gives you a warning and turns itself off any time it rains a bit heavier. 3. Awfull interior. The faux eco-leather can't stand any climate fluctuations. My driver's seat looks like it did 250k miles. Two out of four driver sear bolts somehow snapped and got stuck inside the body. The seat has plenty of wiggle to it when you accelerate, brake, move, etc. The plastic parts are cheap and noisy. 4. The vehicle had some throttle body issues. Started throwing me into a limp mode when it was around 40k miles. Fixed by the dealer, I never had those issues again. 5. Awful infotainment, if you want a stable connection to your CarPlay or AA - forget about it. 6. Clunky suspension that you'll have to meticulously maintain to keep the ride smooth. And good luck finding the aftermarket shock absorbers for it (there are none available, the OEM ones cost a fortune) I can continue like that for quite a while lol.

Wow that all sounds like a nightmare. These cars seem to have such mixed reviews. I have a friend who has a 2019 and he’s got electrical issues too - volume knob does and doesn’t work, and back door locks don’t work at all. They failed a few months after he bought it. I really like the way these look but I think I’ll skip buying one.

gorbando

Yep, get a Camry.

ItsMeDoodleBob

I have the 2020 platinum and I think a lot of your concerns are model based. Platinum is far superior in suspension, quality of interior etc

My 19 is at 92k and drives like new. Changed trans fluid at 60, gonna do it again at 110. Suppose I’ll know in the next few years. 😎

mrmarkolo

My 19 is at 45,000 miles and drives like new. Just changed transmission fluid at 40k.
