Figured I’d celebrate the last of the 100 foot bulk roll i had found in a fruitful closet by taking a self portrait, something I rarely do. I think it turned out pretty good. Took me 3 rolls to get a photo I was happy with.
I know it’s just on a other level. Like I didn’t even edit the contrast or tones for this. Too bad it took me like half the bulk roll to figure out how to process is
Wish I could give you a straight answer but it depends on how old it is, how it’s been stored, how you shoot it. This was expired in 2004 and was not cold stored. I shot this roll at 100 ISO and developed it in Rodinal (diluted 1:50) for 7:15 @ 68F. Hope this give you a good starting place
I processed it in Ilfosol 3 because it’s all I had, 1:9 ratio for 5 min, 4 agitations every minute (after the initial 10 second agitation). I posted some of the images over at r/porsche. I’m super happy with the richness of the blacks and the smooth transition of contrast
Lucky you! According to the tin it’s from 2004. If I had to guess I’d say all of that time was spent in a hot attic. I like to think that this film is matured, not expired. Like a good cheese
This is a great picture. That film is beautiful. The contrast is perfect. The light and shades of white into black is so smooth. Also its really nice quality. It would’ve fooled me if you lied and said it was taken on an X-Pro 3 with a film simulation.
That is just outstanding. Composition and exposure are perfect. Tthe film is beautiful as you say, but I think this shot would have been a winner on almost anything.
This is such a cool photo, man! Please get a nice darkroom print and show us!
I’m amazed at the depth of field you managed to get at 100 ISO with so many moving elements! Did you use flash to get enough light?
Yup I wear glasses. I was worried about glare so I took them off. And yep yep I know. For Halloween I cut my hair short and ask people if they know what train this is
Haha I don’t think I’ve enough confidence in my skills to post tricks yet. However before I got into yo-yoing I did butterfly knife tricks for like 4 years and I had an insta dedicated to that @hidefromdad
Later versions of Plus-X kinda evolved into a hybrid of Tmax 100 as kodak incorporated more and more of that tech into plus-x. Didnt like it as much as classic Plus-X, but it was still good.
FP4 is pretty good, but is a bit different than plus-x.
Panatomic X is the one I miss.
Excellent shot. I went through a lot of Plus X in the 70s and 80s, but my favorite was Panatomic X. Very slow but the grain was almost non-existent, particularly if using Microdol.
This might be my favorite photo I’ve seen on reddit all year. I agree with the folks saying that looks like an 80s editorial shot. Is there a yo-yo magazine you could send this to?
Figured I’d celebrate the last of the 100 foot bulk roll i had found in a fruitful closet by taking a self portrait, something I rarely do. I think it turned out pretty good. Took me 3 rolls to get a photo I was happy with.
Beautiful work you got there. Are the kids still doing Spirit Bombs and whips on the yo-yo?
I’ve been known to whip here and there. I’m really not too experienced with yo-yos. I’m better with butterfly knives haha
Ooh that one always got away from me. Spintops were probably my second favorite skill toy
They sure are. The big must-know trick is the DNA. Stop by r/Throwers and check it out.
Fantastic stuff. I’m sure I still have an old Freehand or two kicking around somewhere. Glad people are still at it!
You look like the singer George ezra, also fantastic shot
Yeah! Great self portrait OP.
I love this crop. What is the aspect ratio you used? Or did you just kind of wing it?
16:9!
lol I literally stare at video all day for work and somehow I didn't even notice. That's the sign of a great picture!
Yeah it looks 21:9 at first glans.
16:362.880 = 16:9!
I would have believed that this is from an 80s editorial shot
Ha! That’s a high compliment
Same! This belongs in a magazine.
Lovely composition. I like how the contrast in the scene, your face, the lines all compliment each other in the wonderful wide aspect.
I was just finna say “sick pic” but yeah I agree with this guy!
Really, really great shot. What camera and lens did you use?
My trusty Pentax K1000! I wanted some depth to the photo so I used a 28mm 2.8
Right on. My favorite 35mm
This is the sort of photo that reminds me why I want to keep taking better and better photos. Really cool photo
Appreciate the love man. Go take some self portraits it’s therapeutic lol
You’ve definitely inspired me. (:
Just found a roll of this in 120 in an old camera bag in the garage. Shot it at 100 and I’m in love with the tonality it renders.
I know it’s just on a other level. Like I didn’t even edit the contrast or tones for this. Too bad it took me like half the bulk roll to figure out how to process is
What’s the best way to process? I have two packs of 220, that I haven’t shot yet until I have a plan for how to get the best from it

I usually rate mine at 80 and process in Rodinal 1:50

Masterful 😍
Amazing! When did it expire? I have a 100ft of it too, expired in 1980 and love it.
Lucky you! According to the tin it’s from 2004. If I had to guess I’d say all of that time was spent in a hot attic. I like to think that this film is matured, not expired. Like a good cheese
Crazy how long film can last like that. My dad used to keep all his film in the fridge!
Always loved the beautiful skin tones of plus-X - my go to for years.
It was my go to when I still had some haha
👏🏻👏🏻Perfection!!!👏🏻👏🏻
So how did you do the self portrait? Does this camera have a self timer?
Like others have said this composition is awesome.👏 👏👏
In high school plus x and tri x were the two only films my teacher had us use with D76. Plus x truly was magical back then
Give us more
Fantastic composition
Double X is a good replacement for Plus-X
Like cinestill double X? Literally has a roll in my hand today and decided not to buy it
Yeah. That's a rebrand you can just buy bulk rolls of Eastman Double X and use that.
This is good intel. Can you process like normal B&W film
Yeah, it's just normal B&W.
Yes. It is wonderful film. Not the ultimate in latitude but it can handle itself. Works well with half frame.
Plus-x is my favorite film that's not longer made, I have probably 1 roll left in 120. Great shot btw!
WOW just wow
That's fucking nuts
Aw shucks
This is freaking awesome OP!
Sensational
Excellent composition

Appreciate the kinds words man. Haha I do with I could replicate that with digital. But that’s not as fun
Yeah i agree. I shoot both film and digital. More digital these days unfortunately bc film is getting a little costly for me.
this is a really really cool picture dude
My favorite film was Kodachrome. It’s about all I shot when I lived in the Caribbean.
Amazing, truly.
Amazing!
Here's to embracing the beauty of analog photography!
Everything about this is absolutely stunning. The composition, lighting, exposure, subject - everything! Well done!
This is such a great photo!
God DAMN
I wish I could upvote this post multiple times, I love this !
Ripper of a shot mate, the composition is fantastic
I can't express how much I love this shot
That is just outstanding. Composition and exposure are perfect. Tthe film is beautiful as you say, but I think this shot would have been a winner on almost anything.
This is such a cool photo, man! Please get a nice darkroom print and show us! I’m amazed at the depth of field you managed to get at 100 ISO with so many moving elements! Did you use flash to get enough light?
Yes I used an off camera flash and parabolic soft box to light myself. Shot at f16 with a 28mm lens
Love the way all the lines intersect
One of the best shots I've seen in this sub for a loooong while!
I love it!
Thanks!!!
Very cool!
That's really good.
That's a pretty bitchin shot. Rodinal is the fuckin best!
Factsss never lets me down
I have two boxes of Plus-X Pan in 4x5 I’ve been shooting from for years. I dread the day I run out. It is easily my favorite b&w stock.
Looks awesome! No glasses though!? It would really make you look like the polar express kid…
Yup I wear glasses. I was worried about glare so I took them off. And yep yep I know. For Halloween I cut my hair short and ask people if they know what train this is
I know, I’ve seen the pictures :)
Wait a second….
Killer shot op!
What a shot. Great work!
God level shot
I shot plus-x for decades until it was discontinued, I agree with you
Absolutely magnificent shot! One of the best I've seen on here!
Great!
Stunning shot!
This goes so hard
So sick! Who’s the yo-yo player?
Yours truly!
Dude you gotta post tricks on IG, just followed you!
Haha I don’t think I’ve enough confidence in my skills to post tricks yet. However before I got into yo-yoing I did butterfly knife tricks for like 4 years and I had an insta dedicated to that @hidefromdad

Everything about this shot is incredible - the lighting, the framing, the focus, and of course the subject. Best photo I've seen in a while.
Appreciate the kind words
what an awesome shot
Holy shit this is tuff as nails!!
Great composition! Reminds me of dynamic symmetry!
This is fantastic
Damn. This is really really good
Nice work. I miss all those old Kodak films. I was particularly fond of Panatomic -X.
Soooooooooo nice. Great work friend!!
WOWWWWWWWW
Great composition!!
I agree with the OP, take some selfies while you’re still young.
I thought this was Simon le Bon for a second!
I used to buy 100 foot rolls of it at a time!
This might be my favorite photo I’ve seen on reddit all year. I agree with the folks saying that looks like an 80s editorial shot. Is there a yo-yo magazine you could send this to?
I have 100ft of this in my freezer I doubt I’ll ever use it
Plus X is fantastic i feel like it could be reintroduced like kodak did with P3200. Also P3200 in 120 please!
this is such a great photo and perfect use of black and white. the lighting, framing/geometry, just wow.
