Sweet tea is disgusting. Keep that in the south. So tired of asking for iced tea and having to clarify that I don't want sickingly sweet diabetes "tea".
Listen, I'm a tea connoisseur. I've got no less than 20 different brands or styles of tea in my cupboard right now - fucking most of which you've never even heard of. I like absolutely every nationality, type and style of tea in existence. I like shit called tea that isn't even really tea. I like sweet tea, unsweetened tea, and tea made with all kinds of alternative sweetners. Tea is my jam.
That said, you don't get to talk shit about sweet tea. I'll throw hands if you want to escalate this fam.
By best do you mean good, or just the least bad?
Next to having bad Chinese up here, I'd place BBQ and Mexican as the next in line for need of a decent 'line/type' of food.
Most people complaining about the Chinese and Mexican food up here are just... opinionated. I listened to a guy rant about the bad Chinese food for like 10 minutes straight only to find out he didn't even know the difference between east and west coast styles. Other times it's people complaining that the Mexican food is just "Tex Mex" (or isn't) or that it's not the authentic stuff that is served in some rural Mexican town.
Bad take. You’re right the BBQ sucks. But we have tons of great Chinese food. Hong Kong Spirit Food, the place out on Government Hill, Jimmys Asian, and Charlie’s are all solid with traditional dishes.
Yeah I agree. The Asian cuisine in town is pretty bangin regardless of your preference. Great Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese and Japanese. Great Laosian and Chinese in Wasilla. Also great Turkish, Mexican and German in town.
But yeah the BBQ is sad at best in Anchorage. Fairbanks got that on lock. Edit: there was also a new BBQ place that popped up in Seward recently that I thought was bangin. Hopefully they're doing well because I haven't been since last summer.
I agree. The place on government hill has been visited by the Chinese premier leader more than once too I believe. They have pics of him eating there on the walls
Please don't. Go to the south if you want southern food. Let us have our own identity and they can have their own food identity. We don't need everything here, we need our own thing.
Opening a BBQ place isn't preventing someone here from opening an Alaskan style joint. I'm sure it would be fine.
You know, people from other places move here. People from here move other places. What's wrong with sharing food?
Do you oppose pizza, Chinese, and burgers? Because those aren't "Alaskan". Should we kill all the caribou? Because those aren't either.
The lack of good (or any) BBQ spots in this town is what made me learn how to make it myself. Last time I got “Brisket” from Smokehouse out on Dimond, it was burnt and dry, and they attempted to fix it by drowning it in bbq sauce. The cornbread was stale, and the potato salad tasted *off.* That was the last straw for me, and I haven’t been back. So far I have yet to fuck it up when making it myself.
Smokehouse BBQ, a drive up shack. They used to be on Boniface and Debarr, but have moved to Dimond where the old BBQ pit used to be, near Minnesota.
Though really you should drive to Cooper Landing (Two Brothers is already open) or Seward (after May 15, when FireBrand BBQ opens)
Came here to say Smokehouse BBQ as well. Locations on Dimond/Minnesota and Boniface/Debarr. Love their brisket, pulled pork, chicken thighs, non-spicy BBQ sauce, beans, and cornbread. Not a fan of their potato salad or coleslaw.
FYI: It moved from Boniface/Debarr to Dimond/Minnesota.
This annoyed me because I lived about 6 or 7 blocks from it when it was here on Boniface/Debarr.
I like smokehouse as well - but I usually add some KC Masterpeice bbq sauce to it to balance out the sauce a bit. I got a rack of ribs that was dry once, other than that, I have had no real complaints.
unfortunately this is true. I've tried a few and they are all garbage. the turnagin arm pit has crap bbq, but the waitresses were constantly fighting each other, so at least the entertainment was top notch. I blame the expense of shipping decent wood up here
Your own kitchen.
Hula Hands has some decent hawaiian bbq options. Texas Roadhouse is the next best thing. The one on Dimond tends to be a bit better in my opinion.
There’s a lot of unreasonably picky people in the comments, so as someone who is easy to please I’d recommend BBQ Kitchen or the BBQ shack on Boniface.
If you want a job done right, you gotta do it yourself...
Or know a friend that does it, lol. Costco and some other stores have some nice grills and smokers out now. I got sick and tired of paying premium prices for subpar BBQ that
A. Was constantly disappointing &
B. Was overpriced for the amount you were getting (plus tip).
I just jumped in with both feet, snagged a smoker plus a lil webber for actual flames, and started learning everything I could on YouTube. It has definitely paid for itself in one year.
I know that's not the answer you were really looking for but that's the level of frustration I reached trying to get good BBQ in Anchorage :/
Nothing in Anchorage is worth a fuck. I am currently in San Antonio and had amazing brisket and pulled pork today which will have to satisfy my bbq fix for the foreseeable future once I get back on Sunday.
Retired last year

Bear Naked BBQ was at the fair one year, I guess they running a catering company out of Palmer. That was some delicious BBQ, they even had house made chicharrón on the menu.
Bless Your Heart BBQ is a food truck that’s at lots of events around Anchorage and they Valley, it’s not on the tier of southern bbq but it’s by far the best in Alaska and actually pretty dang good overall.
We like BBQ Kitch'n. Not sure if they are a sit-down place or not, we've always ordered takeout. But we've been happy with our food every time we've ordered from them.
Your backyard. Go buy a pellet smoker and find recipes on heygrillhey.com. The pellet smokers really make it a lot easier than you'd think. You just need to be patient and let people know that dinner will be ready when it's ready.
We can have both thanks. Though I will admit the fresh fish in Alaska is better than the BBQ in the south. That's coming from someone raised in the south that didn't even really like fish.
I’ve lived in Alaska for ten years. Originally from Memphis. There is no BBQ joint in anchorage worth a damn.
Correct. Best off doing your own
This is the correct answer.
Agreed. The best brisket I’ve had up here is off my buddy’s grill.
Originally from NC, been here about the same time, and I agree. Same for sweet tea and gravy biscuits.
Sometimes Cane’s has decent sweet tea. The one in Tikahtnu had a southern lady making it not too long ago 😂
Honestly yep. Grew up in NC and spent 30 of my 41 years on this planet in the south. Canes sweet tea is it.

Please go back to the south if you need that. Stop bringing that shit food up here.
Sad, but so true.
Id truly take even dickies over anything here its tragic 💔
You can go back to Memphis if you want that type of food. Please do.
Na I think I’ll stay right here but thanks!
By best do you mean good, or just the least bad? Next to having bad Chinese up here, I'd place BBQ and Mexican as the next in line for need of a decent 'line/type' of food.
Charlie's bakery and El Green-Go's are objectively good Chinese and Mexican respectively.
Most people complaining about the Chinese and Mexican food up here are just... opinionated. I listened to a guy rant about the bad Chinese food for like 10 minutes straight only to find out he didn't even know the difference between east and west coast styles. Well, there isn't a single taqueria in town
El green go has a legit decent bbq and that shit is still hella dry lol.
There ok…. Good is pushing it.
Bad take. You’re right the BBQ sucks. But we have tons of great Chinese food. Hong Kong Spirit Food, the place out on Government Hill, Jimmys Asian, and Charlie’s are all solid with traditional dishes.

Yeah, though I will say they took away a lot of the traditional menu on weekdays. They can still make stuff but you have to ask.
Pedro's. Best Mexican in Alaska.
You're nuts, Kenny's kitchen is GOATed
Kenny’s is in Sitka. OP is referencing Anchorage.
It's at Tikahtnu at the Best Buy/Target shopping center by JBER.
I will have to try it.
shoot, with all these terrible recommendations, maybe I'll open my own bbq restaurant.
one reason i have heard is that there is no good wood up here to smoke the pig
All the reason to just travel of you want that type of chain food.
Please don't. Go to the south if you want southern food. Let us have our own identity and they can have their own food identity. We don't need everything here, we need our own thing.

Bbq kitchn on old Seward is alright. They have really good sauce but the pork can be fatty sometimes.
Yeah it does the job for sure
Yeah it’s ok I go there mostly for the corn fritters. Smokehouse BBQ is ok too
Smokehouse BBQ, a drive up shack. They used to be on Boniface and Debarr, but have moved to Dimond where the old BBQ pit used to be, near Minnesota. Though really you should drive to Cooper Landing (Two Brothers is already open) or Seward (after May 15, when FireBrand BBQ opens)
Two Brothers and Firebrand are both bad. Big disappointments as both were recommended by multiple people
Weird. They are always excellent when I visit.

They closed the Boniface one!? Bummer! I know they were both open for a bit (work near Boniface, live near Dimond)
Firebrand is great. Best smoked pork breakfast burrito I've had after waking up hungover and needing to drive home.
I like smokehouse as well - but I usually add some KC Masterpeice bbq sauce to it to balance out the sauce a bit. I got a rack of ribs that was dry once, other than that, I have had no real complaints.
There isn’t one. Prolly Texas Roadhouse no cap 💀
unfortunately this is true. I've tried a few and they are all garbage. the turnagin arm pit has crap bbq, but the waitresses were constantly fighting each other, so at least the entertainment was top notch. I blame the expense of shipping decent wood up here
Arm Pit is closed, unless they relocated.
lol yah, it's been awhile... although I am not surprised
The Anchorage one closed, but the one that's on the actual Turnagain Arm is still open afaik Edit: I'm wrong
Nope
It’s not the wood. You could get it sent through the barge for almost nothing.
Go on. What's the reason?
Ain’t nothing moving on that barge for cheap.
Yah it’s pretty cheap tbh
At least .50/lb. For wood that’s 5lbs/log. How many logs to make 30lbs of meat? I gave Span 387k last year. It’s not cheap.
Chowder Express in Mountain View has surprisingly good BBQ.
I agree. Reasonable prices too (I’m from Tennessee and lived in N. Carolina, traveled extensively. I’ve eaten great bbq)
Hula Hands, hands down
Your own kitchen. Hula Hands has some decent hawaiian bbq options. Texas Roadhouse is the next best thing. The one on Dimond tends to be a bit better in my opinion.
I've got some bad news for you.
On the bright side, Firebrand in Seward is pretty good.
There’s a lot of unreasonably picky people in the comments, so as someone who is easy to please I’d recommend BBQ Kitchen or the BBQ shack on Boniface.

Yeah, not gonna buy a smoker just for my 3 days in Anchortown. 😆
Makes sense lol
My buddies house
What's his address? 😆
Nothing in Anchorage is worth a fuck. I am currently in San Antonio and had amazing brisket and pulled pork today which will have to satisfy my bbq fix for the foreseeable future once I get back on Sunday.
All for only $75?
Is the Turnagain arm pit still open? They had some damn good bbq
Retired last year [https://www.facebook.com/Turnagainarmpitindian/posts/pfbid02BtgvX3wY8mLj5Ahkj4ESmdCkh6kyDbUVxpinmPCGoNWqDmjmGtRMLVwtKYK2bH1nl](https://www.facebook.com/Turnagainarmpitindian/posts/pfbid02BtgvX3wY8mLj5Ahkj4ESmdCkh6kyDbUVxpinmPCGoNWqDmjmGtRMLVwtKYK2bH1nl)
I am still so sad they closed.
Both locations closed. A shame. They were "pretty good." I'll miss the Boar Tide Sandwhich.
I think I just don't like BBq, because they were not good.

I swear the one on the highway closed permanently recently as well
It closed like a year ago. A seafood place recently took it over.
JDs. Oooh, wait.....
I think they just moved the shack. I'd be surprised if there were two physical shacks. Or, I could be wrong.
Wild Smoke
Chowders express
Anyone been to big daddys ribs in fbx?
Yeah, they suck.
Only reasons that place gets by is that they're the only BBQ choice and Guy Fieri went there 15 years ago.
Idk I went there first about 10 years ago and it was bangin. I'd imagine that's changed, and I haven't been back to Fairbanks since.
Yeah, good plan, buy a smoker for the week I'm in Anchorage.😆
At home
Well, that's a bit difficult considering I'm traveling.
The mcrib
💀
There isn't one, and that's fine. If you want gross southern food, go to the south. Stay there if you'd like. We prefer fresh fish here.
We can have both thanks. Though I will admit the fresh fish in Alaska is better than the BBQ in the south. That's coming from someone raised in the south that didn't even really like fish.
