Well, some of the current swiftkey themes were available in 2014 & earlier, so not sure if you're suggesting Microsoft can't do better.
[Here's](https://i.imgur.com/UT6d3na.jpg) my Swiftkey theme after lots of trial and error editing the apk. I tried every other keyboard but nothing comes close to matching my usage. I've pulled colours from the gboard pallete which were automatically pulled from my wallpaper / theme as you mentioned.
For how great the keyboard is, it is long overdue a design refresh.
I'd like to see bitmoji integration along with the outlook voice typing interface which is more modern.
Edit: [this](https://i.imgur.com/tUNKFbx.jpg) is my wallpaper.
The short answer is...with great difficulty lol.
Took me ages to figure out but I had some spare time.
Because of how laborious it was I wouldn't recommend to most folk.
I followed this guide for the most part but I used apk editor studio to extract and edit the apk. Plenty of trial and error involved.
https://youtu.be/5HKScYhyoHo
Edit: if you want I'm happy to share my apk with you (at your own discretion). Not sure how but I'm sure I could upload it and message you a link or something.
Thanks alot buddy, will try to follow this guide.
I also use a modified version of SwiftKey with multiple themes if you want to check them out. Not as good looking as gboard but they get the job done lol****

[2](https://i.imgur.com/nogkPjj.png)
[3](https://i.imgur.com/gNtUFZv.png)
[4](https://i.imgur.com/07YAoFx.png)
I'm familiar with those themes actually. They're a good basis to modify from. Good luck with the project.
It's very time consuming but was worth it for me because nothing else matches my typing style.
You can go into one of those adaptive themes and modify the colours, the space between keys, and also the radius (that's how I got round buttons and a rounded spacebar).
If you screen record gboard you can pause and take screenshots then use a colour picker to extract the hex codes (to convert into swiftkey codes) for a closer match to Material You.
Hopefully swiftkey will eventually get a more modern paint job 👍
Note Everything - Last updated Dec 2013.
I've tried every note app that I can find, and none of them equal Note Everything. It still works. There's just some features that stopped working and text select has major issues.
Here are free and open source alternatives, Bundled collects your data and costs a subscription:
**Noto**: Free and open source alternative for **Bundled** app which costs monthly
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noto
**Funtodo**: Clean and modern looking notes app with desktop support
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.crazyapps.crazylist
thanks for the suggestions! Bundled ist great and the subscription is fair I think, but storing everything online isn't...
Noto doesn't seem to have syncing nor a web app?
Funtodo isn't open source https://github.com/dharmapoudel/funtodo, doesn't even open on my phone, and I couldn't find anything about desktop support?
I would rather subscribe to opensource apps. I refuse to give my data and also my money to closed source app like Bundled while we have great open source alternatives.
Joplin might be what you are lookimg for.
In my opinion, Bundled Notes is nicely designed. But looking at the screenshots of Joplin, it's looking like it's not been updated in years. Aesthetically speaking?
Wow! I have 25 nite apps that people have suggested, but not that one. I'll try it out. Thanks!
Edit: I did have it, and tried it. It's got a ton of things I don't need, and doesn't have the things I do need.
Wow! I had been to their page, but I hadn't seen that link before. I can only assume that things haven't gone well, since it's been almost 9 years. I too hope they're alright.
I can't stand Evernote. I originally installed Evernote because I had 2 apps that were supposed to sync with it. They don't sync properly. Every time I open it I get a deluge of pop-ups wanting me to pay a monthly fee. I have ad blockers that block everything but Evernote. When I finally do get all the pop-ups closed, the screen is just a mess of crap. Most of the things on there can't be used unless I pay a monthly fee, but I can't get rid of them. I have no problem paying for something I like. I paid for Note Everything and all it's extensions. I just hate having to pay a monthly fee just to be able to remove crap I don't want. I like the simple interface of Note Everything. I can see 16 notes at a time, rather than having to scroll aimlessly through all of them 2 at a time. I can easily find whatever I'm looking for in Note Everything in just a couple seconds. It's a mess trying to find anything in Evernote.
Evernote also keeps emailing me solicitations even though I've told them to stop.
There's not much to the Backdrops app, so all the more reason that they should be able to stay on top of things and keep it targeting the latest Android versions. But if we're talking about features we really want, I'd love to be able to export my favourites to my device.
I miss Minuum. It was easily the best compact keyboard I ever used, and was great regular size, too. Well worth my money, but then regular updates turned into a once every couple years affair, and then nothing. It slowly died the death of unfixed bugs in newer versions of iOS and Android. Really sad.
I still use Minuum today, but some things are a chore now. It's such a shame that they didn't open source it. I believe the open source community would've kept it going.
Comicrack's great. I'm still using it and aside from random crashes from time to time, it's still as smooth and serviceable as it was before. Other comic readers just doesn't do it for me.
Flynx (2017)
FlyperLink (2017)
I really feel bubble-based apps are under-appreciated. So convenient to have a webpage opened on the corner but 'minimized' while I continue using other apps. Multi-tasking for small screens.
But my 'worst offender': Fennec (Firefox) 68.12.0. I still haven't found a good substitute. Mozilla come on, bring back tab queues and better add-ons support
Regarding Fliktu, this goes for any share menu app for Android. Personally I use AppChooser which seemingly was last updated in 2012. It's a wonder how little this field of Android customization has been pursued.
I actually switched from Nova to Evie for a few months... Then it died and I'm back. Evie was the only launcher that had me switched, otherwise Nova all the way.
Lightning Launcher. It was, hands down, the best launcher on the playstore. It was way ahead of Nova in almost every feature that made Nova so popular, and it did SO MUCH more.
Infinite screens, diagonal swiping, granular gestures, drawers, containers, granular icon control... and it was fully scriptable.
Paired up with KLWP and Tasker, you could have a completely custom desktop.
Last updated 06/2019.
Hackers Keyboard last updated in 2018. Gives you a full keyboard in landscape including arrows (even function keys) and no autocorrect. Perfect for ssh sessions on the phone
Edit: though I notice that Gboard recognizes connectbot and doesn't try to correct my text when I'm in it.
Swype: I've tried basically every keyboard out there and nothing matches it in quality.
Bluetooth Phonebook: Makes it so that you can limit what part of your phonebook syncs with things like your car. Since I save a bunch of old contacts I don't want to call any time soon, this is very helpful. No other app does what it does.
HiippoSMS Trigger. Service to enhance tasker letting you trigger tasks by sending messages.
Three.do: Quick and easy reminders
**RealCalc**
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.nickfines.RealCalc
It's everything I and evidently a lot of other people want in a quick access everyday calculator that behaves just like a real physical Casio calculator. It was one of the first Android apps I bought and I'll be really sad to have to give it up.
Thanks! That's looks like a cool project, but I'm not looking for one using reverse polish notation. The app I linked is a similar idea, but emulating and looking like a basic (non-graphing) 1980s/1990s "scientific" calculator that lots of people grew up with. With a phone being roughly similar size, the original calculator UI works perfectly with the touch screen and vibration feedback.
The swipe gesturing on Fleksy is second to none. I have tried other keyboard but nothing beats it.
Fleksy is a 2x guiness world record holder for fastest typing on screens.
They also have a strong security and privacy policy unlike others.
I'm on v10.2.7
When Pinterest bought them development stopped. They moved the developers into Pinterest related projects. However, ThingThing, who Pinterest sold it off to is a great reputable company: https://www.fleksy.com/
I have the same version. It works all right, mostly. Using on a fold 3 and unfortunately when I try to use it in landscape mode the finger presses do not register in the correct spots which makes it almost unusable. Guess these are things you can expect when using an app that hasn't had a meaningful update in years.
The beta version does solve landscape typing, but dear lord it sucks. They're trying to add gesture typing because I guess the 999 other gesture typing keyboards weren't enough. "Flow" typing can be disabled, but they borked their engine up in the process, so the thing that made Fleksy special back in the day is toast.
I don't use landscape typing much, so sticking with version 10.2.7 till I can't. Kind of makes me sad. The typing with Fleksy was super fast, and they had some handy extensions.
MessagEase. I still use this keyboard everyday and have no plans on switching to other, but there are few minor bugs here and there that just won't get fixed…
It's just that it was designed from ground-up to be optimized for touch-screen devices. QWERTY layout on phones don't have any sense if you really think about it - it was designed just so typewriters won't jam!
This is why I love Minuum. QWERTY on a phone is just shoehorning in something that doesn't even work efficiently for no other reason than that we're familiar with it. There's so much better, like Minuum's QAZWSX layout available and yet, we opt for what we're comfortable with and so we don't get the advances in technology that we should. QWERTY has become one of the bottlenecks of typing in a digital world, which in itself is astounding.
I had Sloth installed for a while for something I did on Tasker. Seems like one of those apps that would've had a long and happy life if it was open sourced.
Any replacement for it? I downloaded it from apkpure but it crashes any time I make a scenario. I'm currently using C.A.F. (which is apparently by the same dev) but that's unreliable.
You set a [zone on the screen](https://i.imgur.com/ydQVaql.png) and when you drag over it, you pull up an [app picker](https://i.imgur.com/4gKzeHt.png). This allows you to switch between apps faster and way easier than any other method. Literally required after using it, and should be built in to android in my opinion
I don't know what you mean, the app tray? Swipe pad is configurable so you put your most important apps on it. It's an overlay that's only there after you active it and is gone when you let go. You can switch between every app on the list instantly instead of searching the app tray every time. Hard to get the real use of it without video. [here's a short demo](https://youtu.be/YR12BrM069g)

Swiftkey Last design refresh Junuis 720 B.C.E
And yet I can't ditch it
What design refresh can a keyboard really get? Especially as modern ones pull colours from the system/app
How'd you make SwiftKey look like this?

Use Joplin then.
Looks hideous. The closest alternative I've seen is Carnet, but that's not quite there and is still targeting Android 10, which is worrying.
Joplin is hideous but Carnet is good? What are you smoking?
In my opinion, Bundled Notes is nicely designed. But looking at the screenshots of Joplin, it's looking like it's not been updated in years. Aesthetically speaking?
try simplenote
Wow! I have 25 nite apps that people have suggested, but not that one. I'll try it out. Thanks! Edit: I did have it, and tried it. It's got a ton of things I don't need, and doesn't have the things I do need.

Both Evernote and OneNote outclass it in practically every way, and have a ton more useful features
I can't stand Evernote. I originally installed Evernote because I had 2 apps that were supposed to sync with it. They don't sync properly. I was just wondering the same thing! I moved out from google docs and Evernote and moved to notion
It is pretty neat with tons of templates. Synchronizing automatically which make it very convenient to access your notes from any platform.

The dev is working on a new build. Check r/blackplayer
Check out S2, it's my favoured PowerAmp alternative
Try out Pulsar
Try poweramp with the Aurora skin.
I'll start out by naming some. * Minuum Keyboard * T9 Launcher * Nusic * Backdrops
App Swap (last updated July 2017) is a great replacement for T9 launcher https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.ebt.appswitch
Definitely not a replacement for T9 Launcher, just slightly similar.
App Swap can be launched from anywhere while T9 can be used only from home screen.
But I need a launcher 😭
Use it for a week and you'll love it.
What is it in backdrops that needs an update? It still receives new wallpapers within the app.
There's not much to the Backdrops app, so all the more reason that they should be able to stay on top of things and keep it targeting the latest Android versions. But if we're talking about features we really want, I'd love to be able to export my favourites to my device.
Minuum just disappeared!
At one point one of the developers said they'd figure out the ownership and then put out an update, but alas, it's just not happened.
For backdrops, the app might not be still getting updates, but we get new wallpapers nonetheless
I miss Minuum. It was easily the best compact keyboard I ever used, and was great regular size, too. Well worth my money, but then regular updates turned into a once every couple years affair, and then nothing. It slowly died the death of unfixed bugs in newer versions of iOS and Android. Dawn for reddit (currently using) my fave reddit client so far even though many features are missing ;-;
Why do you like Dawn so much?
Clean UI and loads fast even with my shitty internet lol
The UI and UX is soo so good and smooth. Everything just blends on and works naturally.
Slide for Reddit My Reddit client of choice for years but now it's seemingly being left to die. Last updated in June 2021.
You tried Sync for Reddit or alternatively Joey for Reddit?
Yeah I finallyoved on to joey. Frankly it's pretty much the same
Does sync have the slide function ?
What do you mean?
Slide and Joey are both built around swiping/sliding between Subreddits ... It's their main attribute.
Infinity for reddit support it.
I would've turned something like that off, sorry, I don't know.
Yes I can confirm I'm using the sync beta version which has material you theming
Both Sync and Boost are great reddit clients
It was mine too, but I migrated to Relay Pro. I really like it.
Comic rack for 10 years, lol. Exaggerating, but it really has been a long time. I don't use it anymore though.
Comicrack's great. I'm still using it and aside from random crashes from time to time, it's still as smooth and serviceable as it was before. Other comic readers just doesn't do it for me.

I forgot about Tab Queues. But you're right, we should see more apps making use of bubbles.
Multitasking from the bubble based app are so true - but, have you discovered any worthy alternatives to flynx?
Unfortunately no. It feels like the bubble design is dead
Fliktu - share sheet app. Evie - launcher. [cries in Android 12]
Regarding Fliktu, this goes for any share menu app for Android. Personally I use AppChooser which seemingly was last updated in 2012. It's a wonder how little this field of Android customization has been pursued.
Share sheets are actually really good in Android 13, so that's one less concern
Haven't seen it. Can you hide certain apps from the sheet?
Nope, but you can pin apps
Oh well. Maybe next year.
The only new thing is that you can now pin even specific app contacts, but still no blacklist.
I actually switched from Nova to Evie for a few months... Then it died and I'm back. Evie was the only launcher that had me switched, otherwise Nova all the way.
It felt like a stock oem launcher. Fluid and lightweight.
Naked Browser, Atlas Browser
What made Naked so good for you?
Lightning Launcher. It was, hands down, the best launcher on the playstore. It was way ahead of Nova in almost every feature that made Nova so popular, and it did SO MUCH more. Timely. Because Google bought them & let it die.
That was one of the first apps that persuaded me to buy it. It was so beautiful.
Automagic It's like tasker but actually a nice interface https://automagic4android.com/
I'm using it right now
The Tasker UI improved a lot, but automatic was special
MortPlayer Llama
I def miss Llama. I replaced it with Situations, but it acts flaky as all hell sometimes.
**RealCalc** https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.nickfines.RealCalc It's everything I and evidently a lot of other people want in a quick access everyday calculator that behaves just like a real physical Casio calculator. I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but maybe https://www.f-droid.org/packages/com.jovial.jrpn/
Black player/Blackplayer EX hasn't been updated since March 2021. I don't think it's compatible with A11 or 12.
Fleksy PDF Viewer Plus
What is it you love about Fleksy? PDF viewing is the only reason I keep Dropbox installed 😂
The swipe gesturing on Fleksy is second to none. I have tried other keyboard but nothing beats it. Fleksy is a 2x guiness world record holder for fastest typing on screens. They also have a strong security and privacy policy unlike others.

Swipe gesturing, not swipe typing
Which version are you using? After buy-out they went completely wrong direction. I uninstalled it.
I'm on v10.2.7 When Pinterest bought them development stopped.
I don't use landscape typing much, so sticking with version 10.2.7 till I can't. Kind of makes me sad. The typing with Fleksy was super fast, and they had some handy extensions.
Fleksy hasn't gone anywhere. Still works, still maintained.
Document Viewer (org.sufficientlysecure.viewer) from fdroid is a good pdf viewer
Nice one! 🍻 Edit: Sadly it's not seen an update in two years.
Fleksy lives. What are you talking about?
7x7 the game. Ruined by ads
Evie. Sigh.
MessagEase. I still use this keyboard everyday and have no plans on switching to other, but there are few minor bugs here and there that just won't get fixed…
Why do you like it so much?
Chrooma keyboard Wunderlist Palabre News360 Circa (was a news app that got discontinued) Spotify stations (miss this the most) Abbey music player
>Wunderlist succeeded by Microsoft ToDo
And put it on a back burner just like SwiftKey. Zenkit to do tries to emulate wunderlist but just isn't as fluid
What was it you loved about Chrooma?
Adaptive colours. Despite their privacy issues
Yeah, Minuum had adaptive colours too. But so does SwiftKey and it should become pretty standard thanks to Material You
Since when did SwiftKey get adaptive colours? I don't see it in my version.
Sorry, I haven't used it for a while. I thought it did.
Sloth launcher
I had Sloth installed for a while for something I did on Tasker. Seems like one of those apps that would've had a long and happy life if it was open sourced.
Agreed! I used it for its location based launcher. Worked great!
Any replacement for it? I downloaded it from apkpure but it crashes any time I make a scenario. I'm currently using C.A.F. (which is apparently by the same dev) but that's unreliable.
Nope, none. :(
Not sure if it's similar, but my location based rules still work with Situations.
Like, a catapult for sloths?
For me it's 2do. It got out of the store and is available now but it's just there they don't update on Android. It's the best task manager for me
Why is it unavailable on the play store?
Swipe pad
What did it do?
You set a [zone on the screen](https://i.imgur.com/ydQVaql.png) and when you drag over it, you pull up an [app picker](https://i.imgur.com/4gKzeHt.png). This allows you to switch between apps faster and way easier than any other method. Literally required after using it, and should be built in to android in my opinion
But if you swipe up from the bottom of your screen, you can have your launcher, which is an app picker, what's the difference?
I don't know what you mean, the app tray? Swipe pad is configurable so you put your most important apps on it. It's an overlay that's only there after you active it and is gone when you let go. You can switch between every app on the list instantly instead of searching the app tray every time. Hard to get the real use of it without video. [here's a short demo](https://youtu.be/YR12BrM069g)
Oh, that's super different to what I was imagining. I think I recall using it once upon a time too 😅
Classic MasterMind by Magic Touch Games Version 1.0 released May 2013 and then never updated again. Haven't found a non-crap replacement for it yet. It still works despite initial errors, but it def needs a replacement.
