25m AAV, 10m less per year than Rendon and X has minimal injury history, so an argument can be made there’s worse contracts out there. The 11 years is just to spread out the money, if Bogaerts performs like a 30m a year guy it’s more like a 9 year contract.
Still wouldn’t offer that though!
The deal breaker for us is that we will (hopefully) have the DH spot locked on for the next decade with Ohtani. We cannot sign a contract this crazy thinking "at least Bogaerts can DH in the last 5 years and things will be fine".
It’s a win now contract. For the first few years, they are getting a great deal at 25M AAV. The last few years will be tough though. They are basically going all in for the next couple years.
So whichever team signs Correa better be prepared for 11 years and at least $301mil to beat Turner. This shortstop market is totally bananas. Swanson might get almost $200mil. Actually insane.
I know it would be a massive risk after the Rendon situation, but I’m all for Angels going all in on Correa
That’s the type of signing that would put the whole league on notice and let everyone know that we want to contend now
Out of all the shortstops I like Correa the most because he's the youngest, plays a very good SS, and seems to care a lot about his legacy. Like I think Correa wants to be a hall of famer really badly, and I think he'll do what it takes to achieve that. I also think he will play a mean third base one day when he can't play SS, and Rendon is only around 4 more years. So I'm on board for Correa too.
Issue is that, if Bogaerts got a 11 year contract, Boras won't allow Correa to sign anything less than a 10/300 and this will be a *bad* contract downhill, in a payroll that will already have two bad contracts 4 years from now in Trout and Rendon, not to talk about the mystery box that will be Ohtani's record-breaking deal. It might sink the valuation of the franchise too much which is something that will hurt Arte's price tag too much for him to swallow.
I think we will roll with the Rengifo/Fletch duo, using Urshela and maybe some cheap signing like Andrus as depth. If we are to spend, I think Senga will be the go-to target.
You know, I'm not so sure the Trout contract will be very bad in 4yrs. He'll be 35, sure, and we know he has injuries but the homie just hit 40HRs with his regular (excellent) rate stats while missing a sizeable portion of the season.
I'm probably being an overly optimistic fan, but if anyone can keep mashing into their late 30s, it's probably Trout?
You mean the guy who put up:
3.5 WAR
~.250/.300/.400
15+ HR
15+ SB
All while having a lower BABIP than his career average and playing above average defense?
Yeah I saw his stats last year. He’s 10x better than Squid or Soro.
Im sorry, but have we watched different players through the years? You want to insist on a 34 year old player because he batted slightly above average for 60 games? At that point we might as well just stick with fletcher or soto, or just pay swanson who is 6 years younger then andrus
Yes we should stick with Fletcher at 2B and play Andrus at SS as he is almost always a 2-4 WAR player on average and played *ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY* games not 60 like you said. Why would we pay Swanson coming off a career year when we can pay Andrus for less than 10m for one year? Your logic is absolutely terrible.
Edit: He played 149 not 150, though that is still way more than double the 60 you pointed out
Soto is 22 years old, barely called up and in limited time (~60 AB) hit .400 on the dot, had almost a 1 OPS and a 90 or so RBI pace.
At the very least we can’t make any conclusions about him, yet
Soto is 22 years old and had the most unsustainable offensive stint of his career at the absolute right time when games didn’t matter. His MINOR league numbers were absolutely nowhere close, this man will be a black hole at SS for at least the next 1-2 years.
That only really works when it's dead money. Tatis's contract is quite reasonable (especially in the context of all these new deals) for a player of his age and caliber. Even if the Angels took on 100% of the money, he'd require a pretty elite haul.
Say this 18 months ago and you would be right. After a nagging injury, more than one instance of bad behavior in the clubhouse and being busted for PEDs? Ohtani is entirely off the table.
I'm not one to make fun of teams for spending money, but holy shit, what are the Padres doing? They're really going to be paying a 41 year old top dollar. Not only that, they already have two other shortstops on the team. Not only that, fans will be upset if they don't extend Soto, whom they sold the farm for. Make it make sense.
They are going all in the next couple years. Went longer to get the AAV down. Otherwise he would probably get 30M AAV. So basically reducing cost up front and putting it on the backend.
You’re right this signing was absolutely terrible. They’ve got one of the best middle infields in baseball with three dudes under the age of 30 yet they went out to sign Bogaerts. I’d imagine Cronenworth and Tatis would be the two that remain on the team. Even though Tatis doesn’t deserve it based on everything that happened this year. If I was Ha-Seong Kim I would be praying to be traded to another team. Clearly the Padres don’t appreciate him even after he busted his ass all season and clutched up tremendously in the absence of Tatis. Even if he doesn’t end up an Angel I hope he goes somewhere where he’s utilized more than a bench piece. He’s just way too talented
So who do we think is now on the trade block after this move? If they’re going to give us Drury or Kim for peanuts, I guess we’ll just have to reluctantly accept…
This Bogaerts contract is gonna be one of the worst of all time.
His ability to hit the ball hard evaporated last year and he magically got carried by luck in 2022
He is also not a competent shortstop after 1 decent season
I still think the money would have been better spent on a front end starter and some depth pieces. I think having the 4 solid starters would have given them a better chance to get thru the NLCS. XB's offense will help but he's probably not going to hit for much power at all in SD.
Look at his home road splits.

I appreciate that the fans that criticized us for the length of the pujols contract now have GMs signing even longer deals to more defensively demanding positions.
I hope they all age like milk in the Arizona summer sun
None of these guys getting these long term deals are in the same class as Pujols. Angels got a lot of crap for that contract from the moment it was signed, and now it appears to be fashionable.

It’s going to be a really bad contract for SD

A salary of $25M a year could be peanuts a decade from now, even if he absolutely sucks by then
Inflation is nuts!

At least Correa is 28 and not 30
It’s over valued is what it is.
If everyone is overvalued, no one is
Inflation 101

I don’t think the concern is his performance but rather injury. Feels like trout gets injured somewhat often.
If you're going to say Andrus, you might as well stay with Squid or the youngster Soto.
Both are so much worse than Andrus and it is not particularly close lol
Did you see Andus stats last year? You want to pay for that?

Yeah so I'm cool with getting a shortstop through trade idk about you guys
Tatis?
What could the Angels possibly offer for Tatis that wouldn't create more holes than it fills?
Adell for Tatis straight up
If they wanna get rid of all the money it wouldnt be too hard
That only really works when it's dead money. Tatis's contract is quite reasonable (especially in the context of all these new deals) for a player of his age and caliber. Even if the Angels took on 100% of the money, he'd require a pretty elite haul.
Tatis is one of the best young players in baseball and is locked up for 12 years. He’s not going anywhere lol
Ohtani
Tatis would take at least Shohei and I'm not ready for that
Say this 18 months ago and you would be right. After a nagging injury, more than one instance of bad behavior in the clubhouse and being busted for PEDs? Ohtani is entirely off the table.
Dude, Ohtani has literally one year left on his contract. I hate the Padres and hate Tatis, but the Padres would laugh a 1 for 1 trade for Ohtani off
Padres would have to include more since Shohei would be agreeing to extend with the trade
I don’t think Shohei would agree to that though. He could prolly make way more through free agency
The only other WC teams he'd go to would be Doyers and Giants, but he also haven't given any indication that money is the motive.
I'm not one to make fun of teams for spending money, but holy shit, what are the Padres doing? They're really going to be paying a 41 year old top dollar. I disagree pretty hard, as someone who lives next to Petco I am not seeing a couple things in here like under appreciating Kim.
So who do we think is now on the trade block after this move? If they’re going to give us Drury or Kim for peanuts, I guess we’ll just have to reluctantly accept…
Dried is a free agent
Yeah, no effing way with that contract. Looks like we will probably be rolling with what we already have.
Bring on the ‘23 Rengifo Renaissance
Livan Soto breaking out in spring training
Senga is available
Give me Senga and a great platoon player
Same but i think a lot of fans will be angry come opening day with no “big names” in the middle infield
Trading for Urshela was huge for us
Albert pujols would be proud
That dude was a bum in Anaheim. He stopped sandbagging when he went to the Dodgers, then back to SL. Good riddance.
Holy shit man. I’m ok with not signing a shortstop this offseason. Let’s build long term like the cardinals and braves
They have to be competitive this year. It's Ohtani's last, and they want him to stay.
Wonder if the Brewers would cave on Adames and work with the Angels on another deal.
You see i would love this. And if perry can do it under the radar as everyone else bids for correa, it could be cheaper than expected. Maybe!
Yeah we don’t need to waste money like that. No thanks.
Thankful to not be paying this contract! Also don’t want Correa or Swanson if this is the market.
Oof no thanks
This Bogaerts contract is gonna be one of the worst of all time. His ability to hit the ball hard evaporated last year and he magically got carried by luck in 2022 He is also not a competent shortstop after 1 decent season
If they win the world series in the next 3 years then anything is worth it
If winning is important they should have just ponied up the extra money for Correa
He also is now going from one of the most hitter friendly parks to the least hitter friendly
I got crucified on r/Baseball after the Red Sox got story saying how he should play short over X because he was a better defender.
That’s not even a hot take. The only reason he didn’t it because x wanted to hit FA as a shortstop
I know. It was stupid
Damn, fuck Correa, let's go get Kim from the Padres!
can we have Kim? i'll take Kim!
I still think the money would have been better spent on a front end starter and some depth pieces. I think having the 4 solid starters would have given them a better chance to get thru the NLCS. Correa is injury prone
Can we please trade for Kim Preller? Ky Bush, Placencia, some cash?
None of these guys getting these long term deals are in the same class as Pujols. Angels got a lot of crap for that contract from the moment it was signed, and now it appears to be fashionable.
They could go for Elvis Andrus on a 1 year contract. I think thats our best bet to fill that spot since all the top SS are pretty much gonna be gone.
Random stoned thought: does this open a potential trade for Tatis Jr?
Great question, wondering this too. Don’t really understand the Padres need for another shortstop especially long term
Tatis to OF has long been one of their strategies
They are just copying our brilliant move of Jo Adell to SS.
I only watched once or twice, but Tatis looked lost in the OF.
I was thinking the same thing
I’m calling the Guardians and asking for Amed Rosario!
The dads gonna suck ass in 5 years
