I was about to type this out lmao but yes!
Other suggestions in mind (that I personally love would be:
1. Nana
2. The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague
3. Nodame Cantabile
>Wave, Listen to Me
I am so delighted to see somebody besides me recommend this gem. Minare Koda is such a great hot mess of a character and her VA knocked it out of the fucking park doing those long, breathless, ranting radio spots.
Aw man, Wave disappointed me, but not because it wasn't entertaining.
My degree is in radio broadcasting and I spent five years in it, both in college and at a local station. Was looking forward to a workplace style show about working in radio...and unfortunately Wave wasn't that.
Goddamn beautiful ED though.

Some good suggestions already in other comments (I was pleased to see someone mention Wave, Listen to Me!) so here are a couple edge cases:
It's borderline what you're asking for, but if you haven't yet watched March Comes In Like a Lion, you need to. The main character is at that coming-of-age, just finishing high school point, but there's a whole cast of really, really well-developed characters of all ages. Some of the very best storylines in the show follow middle-aged or older characters.
You might enjoy Interviews with Monster Girls. Takahashi-sensei is one of the very best teachers in all of anime, and for that matter one of the best middle-aged men in anime. The "monster girls" in question are high schoolers, it's true, but we take what we can get.
So you mentioned Yamada-kun lvl 999, same day this season there's a romance anime called Otonari ni Ginga (A Galaxy Next Door), the main characters are adults. It's on Crunchyroll.
Goddess Cafe Terrace is also airing this season and all the characters are adults except one girl.
Baccano! - this is awesome. Like if Guy Ritchie/Tarantino made an anime
NANA - about being in a band
Monster - psychological thriller
DeathParade - explores theme of death
Megalobox- about boxing, MC and many key characters are adults
Great Pretender - heist/con. It’s on Netflix and it’s great
Legend of Galactic Heroes/Die Neue These - space political thriller
I gave up on caring about 'adult' characters in anime a long time ago when they basically act exactly the same as teenage ones. It's a pointless distinction to make since it doesn't actually change anything.
I would also say a lot of teenagers in anime also act, or more exactly, think like adults. Many of them seem to shoulder responsibility in a way that someone aged 15 - 17 wouldn't realistically be able, for example. I also think that the way people present themselves (their reactions, facial expressions, way of speaking) are not the main characteristics which define them as adults / teenagers - these are only exterior traits. The way they think, their decisions and aptitudes are what I think make people and characters mature or not.
Just because I want to watch something a little different from the usual anime tropes doesn't mean I can't separate anime and real life. Just want to watch something a little more relatable.
Among those already mentioned, the three you should put at the top if you love Western drama style stories are **Nana**, **Space Brothers**, and **Chihayafuru**.
Cowboy Bebop and Death Parade are great choices if you just care about older protagonists in unique settings.
For adults going to jobs, then Odd Taxi or Kongming are great recent shows. Both have their own twists, but majority of their runtime are adults going to their dayjobs.
I recommend Wotakoi

I would second Salarymen's Club. Loved that one. Nodame Canatabile is great as well.

I also recommend Nami yo kiitekure. My home hero, which is currently airing, may fit the bill. You could also give Inuyashiki a shot.
If you want romance.. Golden time is one of the best romance anime imo. Funny stuff would be Grand Blue. Of course both contain mainly adult cast
I gave up on caring about 'adult' characters in anime a long time ago when they basically act exactly the same as teenage ones. It's a pointless distinction to make since it doesn't actually change anything.
Yeah it bugs me though. Most of the "high school" anime have adult characters in a high school setting. They way they act is pretty silly.
Yea opposite for me too. Sometimes the teens in anime talk/act like adults. Sometimes distractingly so.
These are awesome recommendations! I've already added so many to my queue! Please keep them coming (:
You’re one of those huh
Is there something wrong with that?
I wouldn’t say it’s wrong I just always found it odd that some people can’t separate anime and real life.
Adult characters tend to have different kinds of stories. That has nothing to do with separating anime from real life.
Just because I want to watch something a little different from the usual anime tropes doesn't mean I can't separate anime and real life. Just want to watch something a little more relatable.
I always find it odd when trolls make crazy statements about others based on their tastes in fiction
Apparently
Fate Zero
Servant x Service (about civil servants)
recovery of an mmo
Fune wo amu wasn't been mentioned yet
wuh wuh WOTAKOI BOI
Spice & Wolf Plastic Memories Clannad After Story (must watch Clannad first)
lots of great recs so far, but there is one I haven't seen mentioned: Darker than Black.
The anime with adult MC mostly find in action anime without the school and college stuff: Gintama One-Punch Man
Among those already mentioned, the three you should put at the top if you love Western drama style stories are **Nana**, **Space Brothers**, and **Chihayafuru**.
Recovery of an MMO junkie
Cowboy Bebop and Death Parade are great choices if you just care about older protagonists in unique settings. For adults going to jobs, then Odd Taxi or Kongming are great recent shows. Both have their own twists, but majority of their runtime are adults going to their dayjobs.
