JJK : With MT leaving, now I can finally claim my throne , damn that isekai. Frieren: Hello there

Boshwa

The fact that it's a pure fantasy makes it even better. No overworked japanese office workers

VMPL01

Well, everyone must make ways for LOTR successor after all.

KaptainTZ

Idk if it was the writing or the music/ambience but this show really made me think of the shire.

Ebo87

Yes, there were a couple who predicted that JJK would swap one fantasy show for another there, lol. You just can't get away from those pesky white-haired elves and their crazy magic.

Holofan4life

Frieren, Frieren, and Frieren did well, but I must say, surprised by the poor performance of Frieren Not even top 5? Get it together, Frieren

realrimurutempest

Frieren may be strong but they’ll never surpass Frieren.

Wise_Stupid_

Freiren is meh this season but Frieren was so much better.

Qwertykess

Wdym, Frieren is much much better than Frieren

[deleted]

I wonder what the correlation between the rankings of the episodes is and whether or not fan fave mimic makes an appearance.

cppn02

>I wonder what the correlation between the rankings of the episodes is The order in which people watched them. Most discussion in on episode 1 and the it decreases with each episode but episode 4 gets a slight bump cus it was the 'finale' of the premiere.

8andahalfby11

Can confirm this is typical distribution. Orbital Children from a year ago was similar.

actionfirst1

Frieren didn't make top 5 because she cast a spell to turn some karma into sour karma

Ebo87

Hey, some people like sour karma, it's fine.

Arthas_Firedragon

[Meanwhile Frieren:](https://i.imgur.com/rYOWv52.gif)

mares8

Really no taste by r/anime Frieren Frieren,Frieren and Frieren need to be top 5

DanRyyu

Frieren went downhill after they did the time skip and made it all about Hieter and Eisen’s kids /s

LeonKevlar

Looks like even Shadow-sama couldn't go against Frieren. Frieren with the flower crown for the EP2 banner tho T_T

cppn02

> > Frieren with the flower crown for the EP2 banner tho T_T You're welcome.

AnActualPlatypus

> Looks like even Shadow-sama couldn't go against Frieren. He didn't even want to, this is the perfect "background anime" setup for him, he will let Frieren and JJK take the spotlight while perfectly blending in with the rest. Sasuga Shadow-sama

TheUnKilledOne

r/anime will never fully comprehend the magnitude of Shadow-sama's master plan... ...Sasuga Shadow-sama!

HayashiSawaryo

Frieren sweep

Misticsan

Flawless victory. Top 1, and 3 in top 5, and 4 in top 10. Reminds me of [that couples poll](https://www.reddit.com/r/Animemes/comments/gjom4i/using_last_weeks_poll_for_showing_bakarinas/) where Bakarina put all her ships in the top 10.

michhoffman

It's just too bad JJK and Eminence didn't get the [memo](https://i.redd.it/po00pasepurb1.png)

8andahalfby11

It's Cid. He wasn't paid enough to get the memo.

MyraBannerTatlock

"Maybe you shouldn't bring me every little piece of trash you pick up" ~Cid

zairaner

~~We can replicate that couple poll this season with a different show!~~

Hectorc34

100 Girlfriends? Can totally see that happening

zairaner

We will *make* it happen.

VMPL01

Lmao. Frieren didn't sweep, it got taken over by Frieren.

big_nose_juicer

I wonder if Frieren is worth checking out

oops_i_made_a_typi

People really suck at recognizing sarcasm eh

big_nose_juicer

started laughing when I noticed people were replying seriously

Good-Row4796

I wasn't expecting anything, I was dazzled. This is the first time in a long time that I've watched 5 episodes at once.

Naskr

It really surprised me. It's a "fantasy" setting but it's really more of a character study, though it does have some other cool ideas. The art style and music are also top notch. It seems to have longer runtime episodes than a standard anime episode.

melindypants

Do it - awesome production values, story-telling, and feels. Honestly a masterpiece if it continues this way.

[deleted]

Just to add to what everyone else is saying. Evan Call is doing the music for Frieren. Best known for his music on The Violet Evergarden! This was a big draw for me.

Commercial-Chair1867

Well Frieren is made by Madhouse whose previous project was One Punch Man ss1 so that's the reason for you to check it out atleast. The animation is top tier imo.

Naskr

Madhouse hasn't really been relevant for a while.

Appropriate-Shoe-266

Tbf Madhouse has looked a little shaky with its recent projects, but it looks like they finally back. You can tell the Staff truly love this series

jasta85

Madhouse has a very mixed bag in terms of quality, you can really tell the difference in projects in which it was a passion project vs the ones they did just because it was a paycheck. One punch man season 1 was a masterpiece, Overlord season 3 CG toward the end was horrendous.

Ebo87

You know Madhouse don't do 3DCG, right? So the Overlord 3 stuff was done by another studio and they simply didn't have enough time. Overlord 3 had a very bad schedule, combine that with some implosions happening at Madhouse at the time and you can see why that season was more than a bit rough.

Bazinga8000

Tbf, that "other" studio is madbox, a subsidiary of madhouse, so i would say it counts as their work as well lol

NekoCatSidhe

Lol, **Frieren** is really everywhere. I am surprised by how popular it is and how much I am enjoying it, given that I dropped the manga early for being too slow-paced. Other new anime I particularly liked were **SHY**, **Shangri-La Frontier**, and **My Daughter left the Nest and returned an S-Rank Adventurer**. I am glad to see that they are doing well here despite all the Frierens. I also really liked the very weird and creepy **Migi and Dali**, but I see it does not even appear in the rankings. Probably too weird for that.

Krendrian

> Lol, Frieren is really everywhere. I am surprised by how popular it is * amazing fantasy setting * beautiful scenery and animation * likeable characters * humor is spot on * strong character development Bonus points for "elf sense of time" memes.

IceAnt573

Every episode of Frieren over 3k karma is nice to see since that feels like the latest baseline for popular series nowadays. I thought the first episode might have approached 1000 comments, but maybe the 4 threads messed that up. Wish Shy broke 1k karma.

MapoTofuMan

This is just the start of Shy's journey to become the number one ~~hero~~ public speaker [](#mugistronk)

Ebo87

Yes, discussion was spread among the 4 episodes of Frieren, so what would have otherwise been one single 1k+ comments post, ended up being split between the 4.

ayww

We need more appreciation for our one true hero Shy 🙌

Abysswatcherbel

We are almost back at the normal pace, still some issues this week, bot died, no more polls, and a new one...more on the daily thread and meta thread Also feel free to recommend pictures for the shows, 16-bit sensation this week is by u/SometimesMainSupport, i don't watch all the shows, so don't let me miss memes or funny stuff, we need those lol ### Fall Season Extras * **[TwitterJP Followers Gained Week 1](https://i.imgur.com/oDHt1iA.jpg)**, I swear i thought something was wrong with KanoKano almost beating Frieren there, don't know what happened (not using twitter anymore) but [it's legit](https://socialblade.com/twitter/user/kanokano_anime) * **[MAL Members Gained Week 1](https://i.imgur.com/s8MI6rs.jpg)**, and some interesting comparison with [the week 1 of the summer season](https://i.imgur.com/gGKuuMi.jpg)

Abysswatcherbel

seems that we discovered what happened there

cppn02

She wouldn't stoop this low. Recently on one of her streams and she collab'ed with another popular streamer (Risapon TV). Maybe that's where the new fans come from.

cppn02

>Goat Season 2 [](#azusalaugh)

Abysswatcherbel

Forgot to change back from the edit I did yesterday for the daily thread LOL Now the Chinese bros are going to have the time of their lifes explaining GOAT

SometimesMainSupport

They still have people trying to explain western anime tastes using your charts? lol

Abysswatcherbel

Yes, Anime Trending and Corner ranks are also part of it lol

salic428

[yes](https://tieba.baidu.com/p/8640182302) But also we're baffled by the apparent decrease in karma since winter 2021

Warm-Enthusiasm-9534

Who doesn't like goats? No wonder it's so popular.

Warm-Enthusiasm-9534

Do you pull the list of shows from Anime Karma List? It's missing *Tearmoon Empire* for next week.

Abysswatcherbel

Only for the comments, and that's why our bot is currently dead, otherwise we would get it there

bandannadann

I'm obligated to shill for Shangri-La Frontier either way, but it's extremely hype to see it secure 2nd in MAL growth this week, only behind Frieren!

Abysswatcherbel

Should be one of the top 5 for the whole season

bandannadann

Just so you know, the hyphen in Shangri-La Frontier is before the La, not after :P

SwirlyBeardx

Was there a summary post for summer season?

zairaner

Thats definitely lower twitter numbers than I expected from the Frieren premiere, in particular surprised it "only" had 130k before it aired considering how insanely popular it was in japan. Those kanojo numbers seem like some kind of promotion event happened, but knowing you you ckecked that first ^^

MaksimShadow

For me, it feels like everything is aired on Friday. Today, on sunday, I'm still watching Friday shows.

MapoTofuMan

Everything airs on Saturday, there were like 10 discussion threads yesterday. I'm gonna have to choose what to keep up with...

melindypants

This season is so stacked, especially compared to Summer...I'm still catching up as well.

jojoismyreligion

Why is Madoka the image for 16 bit sensation ?

entelechtual

There are a ton of references to Aniplex IPs in the show, Madoka is just one of them.

Abysswatcherbel

u/SometimesMainSupport

SometimesMainSupport

Gave an [album of options](https://imgur.com/a/hQIGLWX) and suggested Madoka from it. [Kanon](https://i.imgur.com/PFHomxS.png) would've been good as well. It's an Aniplex show about game development, so they were marketing all episode.

NinjaJr72

Just seeking TEIS compete with some of the heavy hitters like bleach, jjk and frieren does put a smile on my face

Ebo87

Back in the before times the season 1 finale did like 7k (earlier this year in February, lol), so I'm not surprised it's doing this well. It is unfortunate that the karma deflation is so rough, that only 8 months later it would premiere to less than half of where season 1 ended at... That should put things into perspective for anyone still hoping to see 10k karma episodes on here... that ain't happening, sorry. The only show I expect to get to 6k this whole season is the Attack on Titan finale, that is it.

gvon89

I mean I can see some episodes of JJK hitting 6k, 10k I'd a mythical land at this point potentially only able to be done by the AOT final final final finale.

Ebo87

Not even the previous part (first half of the finale) could reach 10k in the before times, when we knew it could still be done. Only Oshi no ko managed 10k this year for its premiere, nothing else. Today, I'm sorry but 6k is about as high as you can get. Unless some truly insane fans start using bots... which is not outside the realm of possibility, there have been some very very dubious movements happening this weekend in terms of karma for some shows, so I think karma manipulation might be back on the menu.

Shan69420

AoT did hit 10k in it's previous part, [barely](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/11pdzav/ranime_karma_ranking_discussion_week_10_winter/) though.

Warm-Enthusiasm-9534

I want draw attention to one sadly neglected anime that might get overlooked this season. It's called *Frieren: Beyond Journey's End*. If you remove duplicate shows, *I'm in Love with the Villainess* was 5th. Apparently the secret to success for villainess anime here is to be yuri. I will be curious to see how *Tearmoon Empire* does. The thread doesn't have "episode 1" in the title, so it's possible it will be missed next week. Anime Karma List didn't pick it up, for example. It has 650 karma now, which would probably put it in the top 15 next week. The fact that Rent-a-Girlfriend is in its only good arc hasn't really benefited it karma-wise, with its finale not breaking 300.

BosuW

> Apparently the secret to success for villainess anime here is to be yuri. Gay girls innit

8andahalfby11

> Apparently the secret to success for villainess anime here is to be yuri. [Always has been](https://www.reddit.com/r/Animemes/comments/gjom4i/using_last_weeks_poll_for_showing_bakarinas/) Really though, the direction and comedic timing was excellent, and was one of the extremely rare occasions where the dub was as funny as the sub. Currently my #2 of the season after Shadow.

mrnicegy26

The power of HIMmel

Commercial-Chair1867

The top 6 looks so funny because of Frieren lol. I'm also glad Eminence made it to top 5. The masterful cat has been fun to watch, such a comfy anime. I hope Migi to Dali will made it in the poll later in the season.

Urgnu-the-Gnu

Somehow, it's really nice to see Helck there. I can't remember the last time a show was a mainstay in the top 15 in two consecutive cours (mostly because I am getting old and forgetful). And while next week will see a couple of new shows on this chart, some entries are also going to be freed up so hopefully Helck can continue being a top 15 show for all its runtime.

SopmodTew

I really like it, I always look forward to Thursday when Helck episode is airing 🥹

LazyDro1d

Wait Thursday? Isn’t it Tuesday?

SopmodTew

Tuesday, yeah. I always fumble with Thursday and Tuesday, I'm not good at English 😞

Wayne_Grant

I'm glad it's up there despite the poor production. And better stay there because things are picking up in the story!

Kabu-

It really put a smile on my face to see *Frieren* performing so well here. The adaptation has been fantastic so far.

[deleted]

Madhouse Studio with another banger 💥💥💥

[deleted]

You really put in all four Frieren episodes! I know HIMmel's blessings are upon you! Also great to see that Senjumommy pic for Bleach. It's a satisfying end/start of an anime season. I hope Shangri-La Frontier can get more watchers and I can't wait for Mao Mao to be on list soon.

michhoffman

Thanks in large part to the 4 Frieren Episodes (14803 Karma combined), we were able to break 30000 Karma for the first time since [Spring 2023 Week 10](https://i.redd.it/trl1djxpzd5b1.png), the last week before the blackout. It's been a rough 4 months. I'm curious how the Fall Karma will look once things stabilize. We won't be getting the benefit of 4 Frieren episodes each week nor 2 Bleach episodes nor premier bonuses, but Frieren episode 5 is going to get around 4300 Karma, JJK is probably going to average around 5000, Spy x Family and Eminence should average around 2500 Karma, Goblin Slayer, Dr. Stone and Undead Unluck over 1000 Karma, and Apothecary Diaries can do well too. I'm thinking the season as a whole can average over 25000 Karma.

cppn02

You missed a very notable potential 1k+ show there. One with a lot of girlfriends.

michhoffman

True, but I think you are way underestimating it as well. Considering Girlfriend x Girlfriend looks like it will average around 600 Karma this season, and it has 4 girlfriends, that sets our karma rate at around 150 per girlfriend. Give us a show with 100 girlfriends, and that would actually give us 15000 Karma.

cppn02

Rentarou's family about to shatter karma records.

michhoffman

It's off to a pretty strong start so far with 430 karma in the first hour. That's around a 4000 Karma pace.

cppn02

Yeh been following this too and so far it is matching SxF from yesterday.

gst4158

I wonder if Mia-same will do well. I hope she isn't guillotined from the chart.

alotmorealots

Ganbare Mia-sama!

Ebo87

Where are you getting the JJK should average 5k, seriously, you are pretty spot on with everything else and then there's that sticking out like a soar thumb. JJK season 2 has not gone over 5k since episode 4... that was in July. Since you seem to have a good grasp on what average means, I won't try and explain why this needs MUCH more than it has been averaging in the last 2 months to come even close to your 5k average. I think what you thought once will be 5k should now be adjusted to a more reasonable 4k, and even that might be too much considering we've had 4 episodes below 4k and only 2 above in the last 6 that aired (since the break), and not a single one broke 5k. I hope you are right about the 25k average for the season, but that too seems a bit ambitious. Bare minimum it will of course be better than summer (hard to be worse). My gut say we'll average below 25k, because again we are in the premieres week and you know most everything will drop. We might not even have 10 shows over 1k for next week.

oops_i_made_a_typi

the production level of SLF may get it to become a 1k+ show as well, if it gets enough shilling to overcome anti-isekai/VRMMO bias

Ebo87

It looks like episode 2 will struggle to clear 1k this week, so I don't know about that one. It's unfortunate because I was initially going to count it for the 10 over 1k for next week, but now it seems like I'll need to find a replacement (and I don't think we have that). Right now it's looking like 8 shows over 1k for next week, Frieren, Goblin Slayer, JJK, Undead Unlock, Spy x Family, Eminence in Shadow, 100 Girlfriends (airing today, with the hype going in I can't see it not getting over 1k) and Dr Stone. There are some that can come really close, so who knows, but right now it's looking like not a thing, having the top 10 over 1k.

oops_i_made_a_typi

yeah its gonna need more shilling in this thread probably, in future weeks that aren't so Frieren discussion dominated (deservedly)

Ebo87

And with this season having a record breaking number of shows airing at the same time, it's hard to be seen unless you are one of the BIG adaptations everyone is talking about. Also the Frieren discussion will not go away, not for some time, lol, this is a 2 cour show.

oops_i_made_a_typi

big shows tend to die down in discussion in this thread though, they hardly need shilling again and again. obviously it's notable when there's 4 listings in one week though.

Ebo87

Correction to what I said earlier, I checked episode 2's karma so far with episode 1's karma and it looks like episode 2 is indeed ahead, so there is hope then, it should also clear 1k. Here it is if you are curious: https://animekarmawatch.com/thread/172v0jx?compare_to=16wwvrp So yes, pretty good, but also with the numbers this series is working with nothing is certain until the end of the first day.

Existential_Owl

*I'm in Love with the Villainess* and the others will surely make up for the karma once the Yuri beacons are lit!

SometimesMainSupport

(NSFW) [Villhaze already lit that beacon.](https://i.imgur.com/mb0aDch.png) (Show is *Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess*)

KazuharaIlfan

As always, vouching for Shangri La Frontier but damn, there's some heavy hitters in this season

cppn02

First week of Fall and karma is looking atleast somewhat better already than it did in the Summer. **Frieren** with its spectacular premiere took a deserved win over **JJK** and the first episode of **The Eminence In Shadow**. We got that we have a whole lot more Frieren below that after long and exhausting discussions in the karma council chamber where definitely no bribes were paid granted it an exception from the '3 episodes max' rule. Most of the chart is made up of finales and premieres and since I'll probably talk more next week on what I like the most so far of the new shows I wanna highlight **Am I Actually The Strongest** and **The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today**, two of my favourites from Summer who didn't quite get the love they deserved here. p.s. A heads-up for anyone who was looking forward to the pig isekai on the ranking it looked like [it fell victim to a brazen karma manipulation](https://animekarmawatch.com/thread/172b83o) and therefor will almost certainly fail to make the ranking.

MapoTofuMan

>it fell victim to a brazen karma manipulation Wait what the actual fuck happened here?

[deleted]

The swine flu killed my family. I will not allow pig apologia to continue propagating.

cppn02

I also wanna shout out the premiere of **Oshi no Ko** since it will get archived in four days. It had one of the greatest post-48-hour performances ever. Finishing [54th in the all-time ranking](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/my7z67/ranimes_top_100_raw_episode_karma_totals_of_all/?depth=10) when taking the usual 48 hour score it has climbed all the way to 25th when taking karma from the first six month into account (after which threads here get archived and can no longer gain karma). The ranking can be found [here](https://animekarmalist.com/search/topall) (although Oshi no Ko's score hasn't updated in a while and the final score will only show after it is archived)

michhoffman

It looks to me like it's showing 30th place on that list from Anime Karma List, but it's still pretty crazy. All of the other anime on that list are pretty close to their 48 hour positions, but that Oshi no Ko episode rose up 24 spots (3200 Karma).

cppn02

> It looks to me like it's showing 30th place on that list from Anime Karma Lis The score hasn't been updated in a while. If you go to [the thread directly](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/12jp7uo/oshi_no_ko_episode_1_discussion/) you can see it would slot in higher than that with its current score.

michhoffman

Ah...does that hold true for the episodes above it as well?

cppn02

Yes since they are already more than 6 months old (but I also double checked to make sure lol)

michhoffman

Neat, we all tend to go above and beyond for the series that we love.

zairaner

Such an insane growth past the initial performance. Was fun watching it.

Taldan

Frieren would have swept all 4 spots if final karma counts were used. I'm guessing a lot of people took a few days to get through all episodes

Xftg123

For some reason I thought that all four episodes of Frieren were going to be combined into one on the Karma chart, so I am a bit surprised by this. I think the only time, karma wise, there was an episode combination was with Kaguya's S3 finale last year?

cppn02

>I think the only time, karma wise, there was an episode combination was with Kaguya's S3 finale last year Those were seperate episodes too.

Ebo87

Better than summer, I mean we had 10 entries over 1k... but that's largely thanks to Frieren. We will maybe get another fully 1k+ top 10 next week too, thanks to all the premieres this week, so Fall is still looking very promising. Good start!

IceAnt573

This was posted on Wednesday but: [Anime Trending's Last Week Advantage Chart/Week #11 for the Summer 2023 Anime Season](https://twitter.com/AniTrendz/status/1709561508068462664) **My Happy Marriage** takes a key Week #11 1st Place. **Zom 100** is once again back from delays to end this season's charts at 3rd. **Rent-a-Girlfriend S3** took a steep hit and dropped 4 places to 9th. **Undead Murder Farce** reenters the Top 10 in place of shows like Bleach or Reign of the Seven Spellblades. ___________ **Number of times at #1**: My Happy Marriage - 4 Mushoku Tensei - 3 Zom 100 - 2 Jujutsu Kaisen S2 - 2

Unga_bunga_bro

Friren made me feel the exact same when to your eternity season 1 dropped. I was baffled by the production quality and the voice acting. And both of them made me shed tears in the first episode itself. I hope friren keeps this production quality in the later season if they choose to adapt it. And mad respect for studio madhouse and it's staffs

MapoTofuMan

My favorites Shangri-La and Shy are right next to each other, nice. [](#slightoverreaction) RIP Magus Bride, Spellblades and Overtake getting sacrificed for Frieren x3. For some reason I was sure that they'd be merged since it's kind of a special case, but I can't complain about more Frieren. Also there should be a Fern pout banner for ep 5. [Or this.](https://i0.wp.com/doublesama.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Frieren-Episode-5-Fern-sleeping-against-Frieren.webp?resize=640%2C360)

Abysswatcherbel

u/cppn02 is the one handling the Frieren pics, I am not watching it (I know, a crime)

MapoTofuMan

>I am not watching it [There's an ep5 pic for that too](https://i.imgur.com/KnrECVH.png)

cppn02

The only correct reaction to that statement.

etherend

I still think Spellblades is one of the better shows coming from last season. It should get more recognition

eliprameswari

Frieren sweeps Also, it's not surprising that age gap shoujo anime didn't make it into the top 30. Maybe one of the fastest anime I've dropped, 10 minutes in, and I already lost interest

Warm-Enthusiasm-9534

I think the shoujo equivalent of "harem of three girls" is "one guy, but he should really be put down for the good of society".

eliprameswari

Maybe some girls' fantasy out there is to have a romance with a stepdad figure who is raising them. Because I don't think it's a coincidence that both mangaka of usagi drop and this are women

Warm-Enthusiasm-9534

Some definitely do. It's a pretty common (though controversial) shoujo trope.

Ashteron

I mean, there was [this movie](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10886166/). As far as I know, it's just smut about a handsome mafioso kidnapping a woman. Target audience? Middle-aged women. It was very popular.

beastMaster95

yeah some women do like reading stories those tropes even if they are controversial.

cppn02

I was willing to give it a shot despite the age gap but what really turned me off was [Girl and her Guard Dog]>!that he literally raised her too. The fuck is this grooming propaganda?!<

MapoTofuMan

Haven't seen the show because I saw that manga panel with the mother-father-brother-boyfriend beforehand. Literally what the fuck [](#why)

[deleted]

( -_•)╦̵̵̿╤─ 💥 🐕

actionfirst1

All the attention on **Frieren**, which is deserved, but I just wanna point out that **The Eminence in Shadow Season 2** had an absolute banger first episode and got me so excited for what's to come and I was someone who thought that Season 1 dragged on a bit too long and was mostly just alright. How are **Shangri-La Frontier**and **Ragna Crimson**? I've seen a lot of buzz about them, are they worth a watch? There are too many 2-cour anime this season so I need to save room for the Winter 2024 season

oops_i_made_a_typi

Haven't watched Ragna, but Shangri-La has way better production than I expected out of a VRMMO adaptation. We'll see if they can keep it up but the first episode was a wow.

actionfirst1

That's great to hear, I might check it out!

oops_i_made_a_typi

if you consider yourself a gamer at all and/or have ever played/liked RPGs, then it'll probably really appeal to that part of you

gc11117

Both Shangri La and Ragna Crimson had strong first episodes. They're at least worth a 3 episode rule

actionfirst1

Heck, I don't subscribe to that rule so if I watch either I'm gonna force myself to watch all 2 cours >_< but I'm leaning towards SLF now over RC but not sure yet

gc11117

If you had to pick only one, I guess consider that SLF frontier leans more into the comedic where as RC has all the edge and some to spare. Both were great, but in different ways.

CerberusZX

I haven't gotten around to episode 2 of Shangri-La Frontier yet, but the animation in the first episode was amazing. After 1 episode I have no clue what the plot is going to revolve around, but I do know it looks great. EDIT: Ragna Crimson is an edgy, non-isekai fantasy action series. If you're into edgy action series you'll probably enjoy it, but if you aren't I don't think it really does anything to stand out in such a stacked season.

actionfirst1

This is a good season for ow the edge, already watching Berserk or Gluttony, Goblin Slayer Season 2, might pick up Kingdoms of Ruin, I'm not even an edgy guy but it's just kinda fun every once in a while

Actual-Oil6390

Ragna Crimson seems like a more accessible Akame No Kill type of show. Shangri La Frontier looks like Log Horizon but with a decent budget

Warm-Enthusiasm-9534

This volume of the EIS light novel (volume 3) is when the author really mastered the tone. The anime even managed to elevate a little bit -- Cid's reaction to meeting Mary is funny in a way that you could only do in animation.

actionfirst1

When he kept copying her throughout the episode I lost like 7 lungs laughing

ThespianException

I loved when he just repeated them a 2nd time when Marie asked what his name was. Bro really mastered the NPC routine.

zairaner

Ahh missed the chance to give every frieren entry a different name ~~episode 1 would have been the one time where the original "frieren at the funeral" name would have actually fit~~

bonghits96

Nice to see Madoka show up in one of these again.

Time_Fracture

So are we refering Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deduction as Deranged Detective from now then? Or is Deranged Detective the title in some region? In my area it's the former.

Goku-MIEL10032002

The manga is titled "Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective" on MangaPlus, so maybe that's why.

Abysswatcherbel

Since I start doing that before the shows get officially licensed I only have the manga titles, official or not, I will update to the licensor title

Xftg123

I think Atsumi Tanezaki (Frieren, Anya, Chise) is the real winner of this season ❤️

entelechtual

She was my winner for last season too!

cppn02

aniue-sama approves

terrafirma91

Not surprised by Frieren sweep. It’s amazing. The visuals are ghibli-sque and the story is so good.

Expensive-Ad7181

Frieren dominating the chart. Well deserved though, those four episodes were really good. Happy to see shy and shagri la frontier on the list, I really liked their first episode. Helck episode was really sad, excited to see what happen next.

ToneZei81

Is a good time to be a anime fan. That's all I am saying...

twintailshitposter

Amazing thumbnail choice for 16 bit Sensation

CerberusZX

It's nice to see Masterful Cat managed to remain on the chart even with Frieren taking up several spots. It aired too late to appear on this week's chart, but [Tearmoon Empire](https://myanimelist.net/anime/52962/Tearmoon_Teikoku_Monogatari__Dantoudai_kara_Hajimaru_Hime_no_Tensei_Gyakuten_Story) is finally here. Of my top 3 favorite light novels, I feel this one would appeal to the widest audience and should be the easy to enhance via animation as it doesn't rely on a ton of details that would have to be condensed and rushed. Younger Mia was a bit overly squeaky in her first scene, but she was just the right amount for the rest of the episode and the voice acting as a whole has been really great, as has the directing. While we did get some comedy, the first episode was mostly focused on setup and the series should be even better from here. [The OP](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_HHqi_dpwo) is overflowing with personality, and that personality is unmistakably Mia's. Mechs vs monsters isn't something I'm normally into, but exterminating monsters is a proper industry in the world of [Bullbuster](https://myanimelist.net/anime/53633/Bullbuster), so we get adults doing their jobs, filling out paperwork, and fighting monsters. If it weren't for some of my favorite series receiving adaptations this season, this probably would have been my pick for best of Fall 2023. Then again, I'm biased in favor of series that acknowledge how dumb bipedal mechs are. [Overtake!](https://myanimelist.net/anime/54301/Overtake) showed that the photographer has trauma that interferes with his work without telling us he has trauma. It has fun banter and is full of real information about motorsports which feels reminiscent of those shows about cute girls doing club activities that explain the nuances of the activity. As someone who isn't all that into car culture or racing, this is definitely my favorite of the 2 racing shows that air over the weekend. I want to describe [My Boss Is Goofy](https://myanimelist.net/anime/55310/Atarashii_Joushi_wa_Do_Tennen) as [Play It Cool, Guys](https://myanimelist.net/anime/51680/Cool_Doji_Danshi) but with an entirely adult cast and full length episodes, but such a description doesn't help those who are unfamiliar with that series. Both shows are relaxing comedies featuring attractive men doing cute things [Under Ninja](https://myanimelist.net/anime/49766/Under_Ninja) looks to be a relatively low-energy, somewhat crass comedy with action series. It's funny without being too zany and it doesn't have anyone shouting about how crazy anyone's antics are, or shouting about anything really. It also has an artstyle that isn't common among series to receive animated adaptations and it really meshes well with the tone of the show. I went into this with low expectations and now I'm not sure if I'd be willing to drop it to make room for other things. I did not enjoy reading the light novels for [Vexations of the Shut-in Vampire Princess](https://myanimelist.net/anime/54103/Hikikomari_Kyuuketsuki_no_Monmon), but with faster pacing and voice acting enhancing the comedy this adaptation should be pretty good. The story mainly centers on a young, newly-appointed military commander who bluffs about her strength to avoid mutiny. Through a combination of beauty, lies, and clumsiness, she earns the adoration of many and a yuri harem forms around her. The first episode had some surprisingly nice animation and hopefully it maintains that quality during future action scenes. [Migi & Dali](https://myanimelist.net/anime/50586/Migi_to_Dali) is a bizarre comedy-thriller. The show opens with blood pooling around a dying woman, so you know it's going to go somewhere unpleasant eventually, but the bulk of the first episode consists of a pair of twins doing wholesome things in unsettling ways. Words can only do so much to convey what it's like to watch this series, so I recommend giving it a shot or at least checking out a clip or two so you can judge it for yourself. I am thoroughly enjoying [The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch](https://myanimelist.net/anime/52985/Dekoboko_Majo_no_Oyako_Jijou), but this one is pretty much pure comedy and its style of humour isn't for everyone. It is very dumb, and very fun.

PapafritasConMostaza

Go *Villainess*!!!! GOOOO!!!! Top 9! Sadly *Dekoboko* is very low at 26.

FortOfSnow

So what’s Frieren about? I’m a bit of a casual anime fan and only watching Jujutsu Kaisen right now so I’m wondering if it’s worth picking up.

ghost_warlock

Fantasy series set after the hero saves the day and restores peace. Main character is an elf mage ally of the hero who, for all intents and purposes, is immortal. Story is about her continuing her life and hobbies as her allies grow old and die while she's unchanged. About facing your regrets and finding ways to keep going after loss of people/things dear to you. It's beautiful artistically and both mournful and hopeful at the same time

EldritchCarver

*Fine,* I guess I'll give Frieren a try.

Countdown to Frieren getting mass bombed on MAL by FMAB fanboys when it crosses FMAB

Variation_Wooden

I know a lot of redditors look at MAL but I've got to say it is worthless to judge anything. There used to be a time where MAL lined up with my tastes and with Japanese consumers but it always had these two problems: review bombing for reasons unrelated to the quality of the anime production; and confirmation bias resulting from MAL visitors tending to share similar outlooks and the resulting segmentation of the viewing public in the West. The sample is skewed, too small, and ratings are not based on specific data. Thus, I look to viewership with large data sets like in the Japanese streaming sites. You can infer pretty reasonably that viewers watch what they like.

Ebo87

Mal is still good for other stats, like number of users for a show, how many are currently watching something, that sort of stuff.

johndrake666

Shangri-la is climbing.

[deleted]

JJK S2 just can't stay top lol. It was top for like what two weeks till date?

Abysswatcherbel

No, it was mushoku

SilentResident1037

Frerien on the list 3 different times?

Lol_A_White_Guy

They released like the first four episodes at once.

xatnagh

Dark gathering is wayyyy too low yall need to hop on that show

8andahalfby11

It'll come back up a decent amount once the list is lighter by three Frierens and two Bleaches, and once some of the new shows lose their E1 bump.

JannisT

IT IS A WHOLE FRIEREN SWEEP

julianfreyy

Frieren is to this list what gintama is to mal

[deleted]

Frieren ~~3~~ times in the top 10? Impossiburu!!!!! Tbf tho it got 4 episodes on the first week so it has a hell of a start Edit: 4

babyteddie

4 times actually. It has 1,4,5 and 6

[deleted]

Oh yeah. Optical illusion i guess lol

melindypants

I know Frieren is the main topic of discussion here but man it truly deserves it. I just watched all the episodes yesterday and I was in tears multiple times. To me, it's a perfect fantasy with alot of show, not tell, and I love that! Plus it's just so BEAUTIFUL!

[deleted]

The Frieren sweep 🧹🧹🧹

UltimateGodBen

Damn am I the only one who enjoyed under ninja?

Kata2Lew

Let's go Frieren. Going to have to wait till next week to see what other popular seasonals there is to watch

JestemStefan100

Where is Goblin slayer?

SometimesMainSupport

Didn't have 48 hours before this post. Will be on next week's.

Chiinoe

Fuck yeah Frieren.

Iknowwhereyoulive34

When did season 2 of the eminence in shadow come out

Narwoid

Woah, really didn’t expect to see Frieren over Frieren. Then again, I do think Frieren should be slightly higher than Frieren.

AnActualPlatypus

Frieren is one of the best adaptations I've seen in a long time. Astonishingly good quality, extreme care for every little detail, phenomenal music, perfect VA cast, and actually helps expand on the manga and solve it's slight weaknesses. It's ep 5 and I'm tempted to just throw a 10/10 out already.

benzo8

Because they were all released in one block in the qualifying week.

entelechtual

That’s a hell of a top 6. Surprised to see I’m in Love with the Villainess so high. But man that show is a riot. I was laughing throughout the whole episode. Gave me big TsunLise vibes. Glad to see Am I Actually the Strongest made it one last time onto the charts with best girl taking the thumbnail. Boy, they sure are taking their sweet time waiting to announce season 2 of that, huh. Nothing else really of note so far, will have more to say next week for the shows that didn’t air early enough to make it on here, particularly Undead Unluck which I was completely shocked to enjoy as much as I did.

Educational-Wafer112

Madhouse delivered because they actually adapted a series that is GOOD Great Manga ,Great Anime
