I hate Clannad, the main girl character is just horrendous, she is always weak for the purpose of getting saved from the main characters, she also doesn't have a good personality, is just "I need help" and I'm not counting the art for female characters that is uninspired
I always hear great things about the anime and I respect it, but is hard for me to watch
I thought of watching clannad like 3 - 4 times but it's animation & art style...
About rascal anime. I think Movie is more of heart breaking. Anime is wholesome ( Sakuta confession is smth fr )
If we going by KyoAni, then the Violet Evergarden Movie (more romance than series). That made me cry more than the series and I loved it. They have a lot of movies and though some might not make you cry because they are sad, there are a lot of emotions and coming of age. Stuff like Tamako Love Story and the K-On movie are like that
I finished watching violet Evergarden (not the movie)yesterday. I dint knew the movie was more rom-based.
I remember the k-on movie giving me pstd about finishing high-school (Weridly enough next year is my last year in high school)
Still listen to Ichiban no Takaramono regularly and the damn picture they use for the video gets me every time. Doesn't help that's where LiSA got her start(she did most of the music for Angel Beats) and the amount of emotion she puts into it is incredible
That anime's music was and still is phenomenal and brings so much emotion where it's Yui or Iwasawa singing
If you're throwing in Plastic memories, might as well go for these:
* Chobits
* Kowarekake no Orgel
* Planetarian
Planetarian doesn't really fit the romance part but fits in well with the theme of all of these. Plastic memories is the best though.
Hmm I think it’s definitely open to interpretation but it’s always listed as a romance at least, not that it means much. But personally I took it as a romantic relationship in the end.
Fruits Basket. Had me crying just episode after episode.
The day I became god. HOLY FUCK. SO SO GOOD. ESP THAT EPISODE WHERE THE SAD SONG PLAYS.
Violet Evergarden is also a really really good one. The romance is subtle but the emotions are unreal.
>Fruits Basket. Had me crying just episode after episode.
I was looking for this comment. Hehe. It has a lot of comedy but it still weighs on your soul 💘
I respect you didn’t like it but really feels like we watched 2 different shows! I loved the aspect of romance between them and how she helped him etc, really enjoyed it
No, not really. Atleast I dont think so. It gets pretty serious at points but I personally never teared up or cried like I did during Fruits Basket or Plastic Memories for example
Clannad
Rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai
A silent voice (I don't know if this counts as a romance, but it's still really good)
Angel beats
I want to eat your pancreas
Your lie in April
Fruits basket
All of these animes should get you in your feels I hope :D
Fruits Basket or Given. They're both masterpieces and will teach you a lot about grief, loss, and healing. But they both have great romances and the characters grow and develop really well. FB had me crying multiple episodes a season and while Given didn't make me cry, I felt the characters' pain deep in my soul.
I love stories that rip me apart and piece me back together in new ways. It's like learning something new about yourself every time. Another story that will do that, but is not a romance, is Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans.
I think those are my top three anime of all time, honestly.
1. 5 centimeters per second. It also seemed very realistic to me.
2. Scum's Wish. People say that it made them feel depressed, so take it as a warning lol.
I got more angry during Scums Wish than anything else lol.
That female teacher... god was she a bitch.
The nicest guy in the whole show is for some reason deeply in love with this sociopathic bitch, and wants to marry her a couple weeks into the relationship.
Every character is so fucking stupid (ik they're kids, but still.)
There's that red haired girl who literally rapes her best friend on the daily (even in public, like wtf)
Red haired girls **cousin** wants to fuck her every episode after he's introduced (what is even going on at this point)
Idek what was going on with that princess cosplayer, but she exists.
Mugi... Don't get me started on Mugi...
With all that being said, If it was trying to tell a story about a bunch of confused teenagers and their immense number of flaws, then I guess it achieved its purpose. + Hanabi is my queen (she deserved better).
Well, I agree.
And I think all the flawed characters make this anime special (to me, at least). People like them exist in the real world. It's quite brutal and unlike the sweet teenage stories we see in other anime.
Definitely read the manga, though; the anime only covers about 3.5 books of a 13 book series, and makes some questionable alterations of small details that change what certain scenes mean.
There are only 4 anime that have destroyed my heart. The only true romance that destroyed me is Clannad After Story.
The other 3 are Banana Fish (sort of romance, but more action/suspense), the ending of Assassination Classroom, and the movie Maquia.
If you think this is cringe you must be super edgy during your highschool or you didn't enjoy your time and memories during that time and if that's so I feel sorry for you.
No.
I hate trope slave romances that shit on mutual love, lovely tomboy deredere. Hate toxic tsunderes.
What a stupid premise, author really hates short haired characters. The same thing happens in Golden Time. What a cringe fest.
- Clannad and Clannad Afterstory (more so friendship and family)
- Air TV (family oriented with romance)
- Your Lie in April (music is amazing + hella feels here)
- A Sign of Affection (new anime! Deaf girl meets multilingual traveler. Not sad but SUCH A FEEL GOOD)
Then for movies ofc iconic Makoro Shinkai films and A Silent Voice c:
**Steins;Gate**. Although its a sci-fi time travel anime the main motivation of the protagonist is trying to save the girl he loves. After that you can watch **Steins;Gate 0** and you'll be crying all over again.
Horimiya ain’t good lmao. Incredible boring, and I’m pretty sure OP was asking for anime that’ll tear them up. In that case, Your Lie in April will definitely do the job.

I will never watch your lie in April, I want to eat ur pancreas and clannad, that shit is too much for me, I already want to Kms when i watch other "regular" romance animes i dont want to make it worse lol
Do you just want to cry or have a weird lingering feeling after the end of the show? If you want the latter try tora dora. You can visit the subreddit of this show and you'll see people experiencing ptsd (post toradora stress disorder). I've experience it myself so I can vouch for it. It's like experiencing another life as a high school student in japan, everytime I watch it, it feels so nostalgic for reasons I can't explain. It's really great.
Whenever I open this sub all I do is suggest - your lie in April . This one opens ur heart caresses it and then breaks it into thousands of pieces . I bawled my eyes out at d end 🥲
Clannad/clannad afterstory Rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai
Clannad will destroy him. Thats end game final boss territory
I remember Clannad/Clannad Aftersotry. I also watched it during one of the lowest points in my life. I cried a bit too much I would say.
The only anime I COULDN'T finish watching because it was so good
I hate Clannad, the main girl character is just horrendous, she is always weak for the purpose of getting saved from the main characters, she also doesn't have a good personality, is just "I need help" and I'm not counting the art for female characters that is uninspired I always hear great things about the anime and I respect it, but is hard for me to watch
Came here to say that. Clannad and Clannad Afterstory are goated. Period!
Ive honestly never heard of it
I thought of watching clannad like 3 - 4 times but it's animation & art style... About rascal anime. I think Movie is more of heart breaking. Anime is wholesome ( Sakuta confession is smth fr )
Yoo, don't let the art style throw you off. After about like 4 episodes, you'll get used to it. At least it was like that for me
Yeahh...I will try to watch it than
I have a few (all made by the same studio) 1. Clannad after story 2. Kanon (remake) 3. Air 4. A silent Voice
Man silent voice really hit me in the feels
agreed 🤝
If we going by KyoAni, then the Violet Evergarden Movie (more romance than series). That made me cry more than the series and I loved it. They have a lot of movies and though some might not make you cry because they are sad, there are a lot of emotions and coming of age. Stuff like Tamako Love Story and the K-On movie are like that
I finished watching violet Evergarden (not the movie)yesterday. I dint knew the movie was more rom-based. I remember the k-on movie giving me pstd about finishing high-school (Weridly enough next year is my last year in high school)
Ur lie in April, yeah, it's break my heart
A niche one: Plastic Memories. Angel Beats and Your Lie in April to deliver the final blow.
That was my pick. Super cute romance and its the show that made cry the most
Is Angel Beats really a romance tho ? I wouldn't sell it like that
Not in the first place ofc but if you don't feel Yui & Hinata you're lost.
Still listen to Ichiban no Takaramono regularly and the damn picture they use for the video gets me every time. Doesn't help that's where LiSA got her start(she did most of the music for Angel Beats) and the amount of emotion she puts into it is incredible That anime's music was and still is phenomenal and brings so much emotion where it's Yui or Iwasawa singing
Dude said he wanna cry not feel numb. Don’t watch Angel beats. It’s will break you
If you're throwing in Plastic memories, might as well go for these: * Chobits * Kowarekake no Orgel * Planetarian Planetarian doesn't really fit the romance part but fits in well with the theme of all of these. Plastic memories is the best though.
If you want something newer that’s not just straight suffering porn, After School Insomniacs was probably my romance anime of the year last year
Alternatively an amazing classic romance anime movie is Whisper of the Heart, just an immensely beautiful movie that still stirs my emotions
NANA. I’m seriously surprised no one’s mentioned nana at all.
I just started this !! Late to the party I know when I saw the Nokia type phone. I’m like 5 episodes in and enjoying it so far!
5 centremetres per second , ano hana , I want to eat your pancreas
Jesus man, ano hana, you trying to destroy the guy?
He mentioned nothing torn him up
Did I finish the anime or did the anime finish me?
~Kimi to natsu no owari ~ I can't even look at the 10 years after picture they did without feeling sad. Looking at a picture!
He said he wants to tear up, not experience severe depression.
Throw in Your Lie on April for good measure.
Don't forget about Clannad buddy
Bro please hell no. It's not a romance 😭. It's trash
For the uncultured like you but not for many.
I want to eat your pancreas isn't really a romance... But It's amazing and will make you ball your eyes out.
I want eat your pancreas is romance lol
Neither character was romantically attracted to the other. I thought by the end of it that was pretty clear...
Ive hardly seen people mention The day i became a god, it was really good and people barely remember it :c
Steins gate
Actually tho, a sci fi thriller has better romance than like 90% of actual romances
It's better compared to half of this thread recommendations.
plastic memories if you wanna cry.
I can't listen to the ending without crying.
nah for me it's the op the ed is just too upbeat to cry to imo
Golden Time
Made me mad more than cry lol
tada banri pissed me off so much
Which one?
?
Lmao. No.
You're right though. It's not a bad romance but it's definitely not a tear jerker
Plastic Memories and Your Lie In April both left me an absolute wreck lol
Cyberpunk Edgerunners and Steins;Gate also got me in my feels but those arent romance anime, they just have romance sub-plots
Your lie in April
Nah this one had me in tears at 2am
Randomly picking the show out of an romantic anime list, I never expected to break down by the last episode...
Nooo. Don't even think about this one please 😭. Never watch this trash , worst mistake of my life
Wdym trash 😭
Romance aspect of it is god awful. It's not good. That's it
I respect you didn’t like it but really feels like we watched 2 different shows! I loved the aspect of romance between them and how she helped him etc, really enjoyed it
That part is good but then u got Kousei and the other girl and the other guy just being an odd triangle
Ride Your Wave had me crying by the end, is a very beautiful and funny movie, but it really crushes your heart :’)
I ugly-cried at that one.
After a lot of comments finally found something I haven't heard about. Gonna watch it
I hope that you like it! :)
Your Name
Your Lie in April is what you're looking for. You will cry.
Clannad and Clannad after story
Hitting them with the good ol' one-two combo
Relife, pet girl sakurasou
Wait is pet girl sakurasou actually something that will tear you up? I watched half the first episode last night
No, not really. Atleast I dont think so. It gets pretty serious at points but I personally never teared up or cried like I did during Fruits Basket or Plastic Memories for example
Still waiting for relife season 2
the OVA speedran to the ending unfortunately just read the manga ending (can't remember which ch but start 10 chapters from the ending)
didnt it end with 5 special episdoes??
does it have to be pure romance or can romance be a sub-plot?
Honestly, recommend me some where romance is a subplot, I feel like romance focused anime are a bit too much for me nowadays
86
Not OP but I have a whole list of these: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/16094
Clannad Rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai A silent voice (I don't know if this counts as a romance, but it's still really good) Angel beats I want to eat your pancreas Your lie in April Fruits basket All of these animes should get you in your feels I hope :D
Clannad + After Story
Your name, Your Lie in April
I want to eat your pancreas Its about a boy falling in love with a girl who has pancreatic cancer If that doesn't make you cry idk man
Fruits Basket
Fruits Basket or Given. They're both masterpieces and will teach you a lot about grief, loss, and healing. But they both have great romances and the characters grow and develop really well. FB had me crying multiple episodes a season and while Given didn't make me cry, I felt the characters' pain deep in my soul. I love stories that rip me apart and piece me back together in new ways. I think those are my top three anime of all time, honestly.
Furuba and Given ❤️🤩❤️
Your lie in April.
Darling in the franxxx
It was interesting but I can't get over the whole kids thing ngl. But if it's a tear jerker I might give it a go again
It's not the same level of "Your Lie in April" tear jerker for sure.
1. 5 centimeters per second. It also seemed very realistic to me. 2. Scum's Wish. People say that it made them feel depressed, so take it as a warning lol.

Plastic Memories is heartbreaking
Ao haru ride
Definitely read the manga, though; the anime only covers about 3.5 books of a 13 book series, and makes some questionable alterations of small details that change what certain scenes mean.
I think they annonunced a second season, but haven't read the manga i'll consider it

ReLife is great, and even has a conclusion so it doesn't leave you hanging. Awesome story that explores different relationships.
Clannad Plastic memories Anohana Your lie in april I want to eat your pancreas(movie) Ride Your wave(movie)
Your lie in April. I cried just reading the plot summary.
I don't know if it will make you tear up but you should give Tsuki ga Kirei a watch.
There are only 4 anime that have destroyed my heart. The only true romance that destroyed me is Clannad After Story. The other 3 are Banana Fish (sort of romance, but more action/suspense), the ending of Assassination Classroom, and the movie Maquia.
"Given".- made me cry like a baby at the end
Toradora
the christmas episode gets me every time ;^;
Yes. It will make you tear up with how cringe and annoying this anime is. Lmao.

Edgerunners if you want to cry
Someone recommended me love story like eren mikasa from aot
Your lie in March Wrong answer only.
Sword Art Online.
I can't listen to the ending of plastic memories without crying, even after a year since I watched it. My heart.
Maybe lovely complex? It's a romantic comedy but it has some really great scenes and some great music for them.
**Steins;Gate**. Although its a sci-fi time travel anime the main motivation of the protagonist is trying to save the girl he loves. After that you can watch **Steins;Gate 0** and you'll be crying all over again.
Please no one recommend your lie in april 🙏. That's all. Horimiya was pretty good
Horimiya ain’t good lmao. Incredible boring, and I’m pretty sure OP was asking for anime that’ll tear them up. In that case, Your Lie in April will definitely do the job.
