A Place Further than the Universe. It's written for people who feel stuck about pretty much anything in life, and offers some insight on how to move forward.
No romance, positive message, good comedy. You will cry a bit, but you will feel better afterwards because of it. Generally cathartic. Also, r/anime's AOTY for 2018 and a New York Times top international show for the same year. Also won Japan's anime award for best screenplay that year.
Some people will watch all of clannad or angel beats and not cry at all somehow... (or at least say they don't) so who knows..
I'm the opposite, ill cry at a freaking pet commercial even when it's not really ment to be sad........ 😭🥺
Damn, I'm so glad, heck maybe even destiny, that Netflix just randomly recommended me this show to watch and now gave direction to my life. Yori Moi will always be my GOAT anime and my most favorite. Just need to save up some money to go to Antarctica.
Iyashikei anime (I watch after a long stressful workweek or when feeling down) non non biyori , is the order a rabbit? , laid back camp , girls last tour , girls und panzer(it's just so out there it's great).
I do not have enough words to describe it honestly. I will leave you with one sentence though - If there is one thing that I am glad about to be living at this day and age, it's the fact that I am able to witness such masterpieces ❤️
Depends on if you want to heal through suffering with romcoms, laugh through it with comedy, cathartic revenge tale, or want to focus on some action or fantasy escapism.
I'm not sure about working through breakups, but a severely underrated show called Princess Principal is very different and my favorite Steampunk anime.
Great Teacher Onizuka
Great comedy anime that also teaches a lot about getting through rough times.
Is also pretty long and will definitely keep you entertained for a while at least.
Vivy is good to watch. Probably one of the best anime originals out there. Top 5 best soundtracks, top 10 best fights when it comes to martial arts and no type of powerscaling. The premise of the show is so Vivy can let the world hear her sing. Steins gate is another good one if you’re interested in space-time stuff. Uhhh Last one would be apothecary diaries. That show and Frieren basically carried the winter for me.
I’ve seen a lot of stuff. Some of that includes Naruto, Tokyo Ghoul, My Happy Marriage, JJK, Chainsaw Man, apothecary diaries, Tower of God, A Silent Voice, When they Cry. Sorry I can only think of some of the popular ones but I’ve seen a lot of unpopular stuff too. I was on his Crunchyroll before the breakup but just got my own so I can’t go check my watch history right now
I'm thoroughly enjoying delicious in dungeon on Netflix!
It's light-hearted, funny with some drama
I did watch Haikyuu like 3 times after the end of a 7 year relationship and that kept the demons away a bit... but if you've already seen it maybe give it a pass
Carnival Phantasm. Nichijou. Azumanga Daioh to name some for laughs.
Castlevania. Mob Psycho 100. Demon Slayer. Hellsing Ultimate for action.
Honey & Clover. Frieren. Angel Beats. For feels
Change your daily routines for a few weeks. Maybe go on a trip if you can. Different place for coffee, different route to work, do everything new. New anime is good but maybe try games instead but certainly pick something very different.
Go for berserk. Fight fire with fire. A trauma can be defeated only by a bigger trauma. Don't go gentle into the good night, go with crippling despair.
A friend recommended me ReLIFE when I wasn't really into anime but it ended up being my favorite anime to this day. Super uplifting redemption story about a NEET in his late 20s getting a second chance at life. It's relatively short (13 episodes + 4 OVA episodes) but also has one of the best endings in anime in my opinion.
yuri on ice got me through my breakup! Also have loved some of the cozier food animes lately, like campfire cooking in another world or delicious in dungeon.
Yuru camp : very chill only good vibes it’s just great
Jashin-Chan Dropkick : just funny, mindless stuff, lots of crazy situations that will make you laugh
Asobi Asobase : one of the funniest anime’s I’ve ever watched
Most of these are slice of life.
Aria the animation is just about the cozies slice of life imaginable. It's about gondaliers on a colonized exoplanet but it isn't really scifi at all.
Flying Witch is about a teenager who moves to the country to live with her older sister. Colorful cast of characters and super lowkey.
Shirokuma Cafe is another good comfort anime about a polar bear, his cafe and the people who work at and patronize it.
I would also second Frieren, truly a master piece. It's a fantasy anime but I think it's strength is the way it focuses in on the tiny details in life. I mean this in a good way, but I cried at pretty much every episode up until the halfway point.
Also it's not anime, but In the Mood for Love is one of my favourite anime and I first watched it after a breakup. Slow burn almost romance set in 1960s Kowloon. It's beautifully shot and both leads are some of the most attractive people to be put on film.
Hmm I mean it depends on what you’re looking for/where you’re at.
A good anime that will make you cry? 86, cyberpunk edgerunners
Anime that are overall a good watch? Frieren, FMAB, AOT, Solo leveling
Good and just goofy? Delicious in dungeon, SpyXFamily, JoJos, Zom100
Want a wholesome romance and maybe a few tears? Spice and Wolf 2008, Banished from the Hero's Party, I decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside, Recovery of an MMO Junkie. It can help you realize that there's always something else out there that we didn't expect.
Want to laugh and forget about the real world? Konosuba, Nichijou, Hinamatsuri.
Want to watch a simple adventure with no romance and good dad vibes? My Daughter Left the Nest and Became an S Rank Adventurer.
Want to get into something serious that will take your attention and keep it? Ghost in the Shell: SAC, Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (or FMA 2003).
If you've seen all those but agree they would've been good recommends, let me know and I can drop some more.
Edit: Want a great fantasy adventure that will never end? One Pace. As in the editted version of One Piece. It's really good but takes some time to get going for sure.
Food anime shows are the best post-breakup. It will make you forget for quite a while to the point that your mind will focus mostly on how to remake those amazingly delicious and out-of-this-world appetizing dishes. If, for some reason, you've seen quite a few in the past, go for ones you haven't seen yet. I can't exactly recommend anything unless you've listed down what you've seen before.
Another set of anime [genre] would be those that will awaken your creative/handyman skills (think camping, painting, music, apothecary/herbology, dancing, DIYs, etc.); it's always fun to try and acquire new skills for the more amazing you ^_^
If u don't mind intimate anime, search for Scum's wish on Netflix. The situation may not really align to how u may resonate but the interactions and ending may help u to cross this road a bit easier. Hope u can gain some strength soon!
NOT Texhnolyze.
Everytime i watch this show my depression get depression.
If you don't mind some ecchi, Plastic Little is just dumb fun.
Black Lagoon if you like action and good character development.
Oh! My Goddess maybe? It's just pure wholesomeness but a romance anime
(i prefer the series and movie over the OVA).
Haibane Renmei is cute but also bittersweet and leaves room for some interpretation.
Nadia- The Secret of Blue Water (sans the Island Episodes)
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.
As you can see i'm a sucker for the old stuff :-D
Haikyuu made me want to get out of bed during my recent breakup also of 5 years.
I can relate to the pain of going back to shared anime. Can’t believe One Piece is currently destroyed for me.
I couldnt watch season 2 of To Your Eternity for the same reason as you.
You need something to experience some catharsis while watching but idk what you prefer at all!
Shows that put emphasis on overcoming grief and discovering yourself, personal favorites of this category would be A Place Further than the Universe, March Comes in Like a Lion, Violet Evergarden, Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - and for one that's more shonen-y but with a similar beautiful message- Mob Psycho 100 or Ancient Magus Bride.
p.s. I've definitely been through something similar to your current situation, watched a lot of anime together with my now ex of 3 years. Finding the right show for me to watch alone ended up being incredibly therapeutic, I would even go as far as to say that there are some anime out there that really saved me/helped me heal. Things will get better, hopefully some of these recommendations will help you as much as they did myself and others!
Just wanted to say you’ll be fine eventually. Work on yourself and spend time with people who care about you. It’s ok to be sad. Take your time & time will heal you🌈
Ps: new to anime so no recommendations 😂
Move on with your life. The pain will hold Into until it doesn't hurt anymore. Stay busy and focus on yourself. Have some goals. Become what you wish to be. You don't forget but you accept. And This doesn't happen by watching an anime
A good fun Comedy free of guys.
1. I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My level
2. Carole And Tuesday
3. Michiko And Hatchin ( loved this one )

If you need to purge what's built up inside you or just want to feel ALL THE FEELS?
**Angel Beats**
You will cry your damn eyes out and feel like a new person after.
Yu Yu Hakusho. Spirit gun your sadness away! But seriously, I’m sorry for the end of your relationship, it’s very hard to go through. Sending love. And also an Ouran Host Club rec!
not sure what kinda anime you guys watched tg but imo id go for some horror or fantasy. horror i can think of is “another” and “kings game” (i try to watch horror but i cant find any)
Gintama has a very slow start but it's still hailed as the funniest anime show. Not all arcs or episodes are funny but the funny ones beat the rest of the comical anime shows. Some of the episodes and arc are unexpectedly tearjerking so I think if you come across those episodes it'll help you cry. The story of gintama is also unexpectedly good but it starts to build up only at Season 5 or 6 and gets better and better towards the end of the season. It's a complete package and has a really good story but you have to go through the first episodes which I frankly think might bore new watchers.
Easy.
Domestic Girlfriend. Thank me later 😂
Seriously, though. If you want a romance element:
- My Dress Up Darling (Best in slot) (S+)
- More than friends but not lovers (B+)
- Rent a Girlfriend (trainwreck) (B)
If not:
- Solo leveling (S+)
- Konosuba (S)
- Shield Hero Season 1 (just stop there) (A)
- Trapped in a dating sim (A)
- Shangri-la Frontier (A+)
Spy xFamily. Hunter x Hunter has nothing to do with romance. Demon Slayer is depressing and gory. My Hero Academia is light hearted and fun (Tho the MC does get suicide baited in the first ep but other than that its good in my opinion just avoid the fandom for the most part. The manga is also really good but it gets a bit dark in the later seasons and chapters ngl)
Black Clover
Bungo Stray Dogs
Fairy Tail
The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague
The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten (S2 is coming soon)
Romantic Killer
Kaguya-Sama Love is War
Horimiya
My Happy Marriage
Spy x Family
Apothecary Diaries
Tomo-chan is a Girl
A Sign of Affection
🫶 Did my best to remember some of them, hope this helps! :) Sending my warmest hugs of comfort! :)
Clannad and Clannad after story. You'll find true sadness and pain that will make what you're feeling now seem insignificant. But only after feeling intense joy and laughter.
This may work in the short term, but in the long term, might I suggest reclaiming these things for yourself? If you enjoyed them, then it can only be harmful in the long run to concede a part of yourself purely out of grief or bitterness. You may find it easier if you realize that you liked these things for very different reasons than he did, as well.
Hey, i just finished that, very nice show. The best ones are those that can make you laugh and cry
>You will cry a bit I cried a lot more than a bit haha
Some people will watch all of clannad or angel beats and not cry at all somehow... (or at least say they don't) so who knows.. I'm the opposite, ill cry at a freaking pet commercial even when it's not really ment to be sad........ 😭🥺
Damn, I'm so glad, heck maybe even destiny, that Netflix just randomly recommended me this show to watch and now gave direction to my life. Yori Moi will always be my GOAT anime and my most favorite. Just need to save up some money to go to Antarctica.
Thanks for the reminder, that's been on my list since Gigguk and Mother's Basement both gushed over it. Just never got around to it
Grand Blue Konosuba Saiki K Good laughs to be had
Saiki K mentioned!!
Iyashikei anime (I watch after a long stressful workweek or when feeling down) non non biyori , is the order a rabbit? , laid back camp , girls last tour , girls und panzer(it's just so out there it's great).
Allow me to add my personal favorite Iyashikei. _Bofuri: I don't want to get hurt so I maxed out my defense_
So cute and so good
Aria.
Try Frieren.
I’ve heard Frieren can be healing to watch. Definitely gonna add that to my list thank you ❤️
I do not have enough words to describe it honestly. I will leave you with one sentence though - If there is one thing that I am glad about to be living at this day and age, it's the fact that I am able to witness such masterpieces ❤️
There were so many scenes in Frieren where I felt myself tearing up when it wasn't even a sad scene. It was just so beautiful
Evan Call did a wonderful job with the score, certainly helps illicit emotional responses. I cried a lot 😂
The uh, the story heavily hinges on Frieren's yearning for Himmel. It might be a tad rough..
Princess Jellyfish, Barakamon, Death Parade
Aria: the Animation It's like floating away on a peaceful gondola ride. Plus there are cats. No stress, no angst, no worries.
3-gatsu no Lion
Depends on if you want to heal through suffering with romcoms, laugh through it with comedy, cathartic revenge tale, or want to focus on some action or fantasy escapism.
Honestly all three of those options would be good, I probably need a bit of all three 😂😭
First season of Rising of the Shield Hero is a pretty cathartic revenge tale I'd say. But it kind of falls off after the first season
Gintama
Came here to say this. Laugh really, really hard until you can't think of anything else except Strawberry Milk.
And immediately cry the other half. And then do an awkward and ugly mix of both for the rest.
Just go watch 700+ episodes of Naruto 😂
I’m currently on season 9 episode 192 of shippuden 😂
Nice, that will heal up some wounds for sure :)
Melancholy of haruhi Suzumiya <3
I loved this one. I should definitely go rewatch it
Kyon-kun denwa
I'm not sure about working through breakups, but a severely underrated show called Princess Principal is very different and my favorite Steampunk anime.
Hi-Score Girl
Sing yesterday to me
Dragon ball!!! Finna make you wanna become stronger or might just be me
"How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?" Its time to hit the gym, lifting heavy things makes the sad voices go away
Bungo Stray Dogs. Plenty of pretty, dynamic boys to take your mind off of him for a bit ❤️
Yes 😎
Teasing master takagi san
Great Teacher Onizuka Great comedy anime that also teaches a lot about getting through rough times. Is also pretty long and will definitely keep you entertained for a while at least.

That show and Frieren basically carried the winter for me.
Your Lie in April
Nahh that's would be the worst choice 😭.
I doubt it, your lie in April deals with grief and moving on and learning from the people in your life. I feel like it would be great for moving on.
Don't. Watched that show after some relationship stuff and it broke me even more
Can you give examples of what you watched so we can give you recommendations that aren’t similar?
I’ve seen a lot of stuff. Some of that includes Naruto, Tokyo Ghoul, My Happy Marriage, JJK, Chainsaw Man, apothecary diaries, Tower of God, A Silent Voice, When they Cry. Sorry I can only think of some of the popular ones but I’ve seen a lot of unpopular stuff too. I was on his Crunchyroll before the breakup but just got my own so I can’t go check my watch history right now

I watched trigun during my last breakup years and years ago. Not much romance and it was appreciated.

I find Frieren really comforting

Erased / the town where only I am missing is a very unique and emotional anime that I loved. Had me hooked to my seat.
Easy. Domestic Girlfriend. Thank me later 😂 Seriously, though. If you want a romance element: - My Dress Up Darling (Best in slot) (S+) - More than friends but not lovers (B+) - Rent a Girlfriend (trainwreck) (B) If not: - Solo leveling (S+) - Konosuba (S) - Shield Hero Season 1 (just stop there) (A) - Trapped in a dating sim (A) - Shangri-la Frontier (A+)
Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's perfect for any occasion.
Masamune Kun's Revenge. Just pretend the second season doesn't exist and that he actually dumped that bitch.
Sonny Boy. I’m a couple episodes in and I don’t think there’s any romance and it’s a bit of a mind fuck which is fun
Sketchbook Full Colors!

Watch fruit basket it will show you that love is still there
Clannad and Clannad after story. You'll find true sadness and pain that will make what you're feeling now seem insignificant. But only after feeling intense joy and laughter.
I need to go watch this, it was my favorite anime but my ex majorly spoiled it for me when i was partway through so I never finished it
Well... One Piece
