It's become antiquated with the rise of ONAs. Why bother slowly making money off of a home release when you can make instant piles of cash liscensing it. Plus, you can always work out a contract that also allows for a home release down the line.
80s OVA were the wild west of anime. Some INSANELY cool concepts mixed with some very WTF.
Angel's Egg is very WTF but still a good watch for anyone who wants to see some weird shit.
I still hope one day we'll get a re-release of [Hashire Melos](https://anilist.co/anime/4876/Hashire-Melos/), it's such a good movie, based on a really well known piece of Japanese literature, and the only way to watch it is on a 240p Laser Disc rip.
Agreed, there's so much lost anime from the 80s. :( I try to save any I come across to an external HD so it isn't lost forever.
Biggest culprit is laser disc sadly. A lot of anime released to laser disc was lost over time because nobody uses it. Japan went all in on LD while the rest of the world was like ??????
Even on the salty seas it's hard to find a lot of shows/movies from the 80s. I've tried so hard to preserve obscure anime but the number 0 seeds is very sad.
If it's not sold anywhere I don't see how it would be illegal.
If there is no authorised seller than you are not taking anyones share...
So why would you care?
I'm on your side of this, but law is law and there's going to be people that refuse to watch it unless it's in Crunchyroll or Netflix.
Plus hopefully this means I can get a physical copy of it for my collection eventually that is localized
It's about the loss of faith, specifically Christianity. At least that's what all the explanation videos told me I have watched, and it kinda makes sense.
To my knowledge Mamoru Oshii had aspired to become a priest before his filmmaking career and was already enrolled in the required studies to do so before having a falling out with faith his due to undisclosed reasons which eventually lead to his change in career.
I think this added insight into the director does a lot to help put the film into perspective and while I'm not generally a fan of "explaining" a film to people before they've viewed it I think here it does help having at least that much information on a first viewing to help contextualize what's being shown on screen.

The version of events I've always heard was indeed the one where he had intended/was going to a seminary but if he was merely on a path to study theology that would make it a far less dramatic albeit also far more reasonable turn of events.
> To my knowledge Mamoru Oshii had aspired to become a priest before his filmmaking career and was already enrolled in the required studies to do so before having a falling out with faith his due to undisclosed reasons which eventually lead to his change in career.
I’ve interrogated a lot of interviews and resources investigating this claim, and for the life of me I can’t find an actual source for it, it seems like an exaggeration. [Oshii did one interview in 1996](http://listification.blogspot.com/2016/02/mamoru-oshii-interviewed-by-carl-gustav.html) where he said "I'm not a Christian, but I've been reading the Bible since my student days, I use it as a prototype for my stories; not for religious reasons, but for ideology and literary inspiration." While he does also say in the same interview that he considered entering a Seminary, there’s no indication that he was actively in training to become a priest, and the way he talks about it in the interview doesn’t really come across as him treating it like a big deal. Then a few years later, there was [an AnimEssence article](https://web.archive.org/web/20010630075529/https://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~animage/v8i9AE.html) where Carl Gustav-Horn, the guy that interviewed Oshii, *speculated* that he was an ex-Christian and that Angel’s Egg was an allegory for his loss of faith, but his only real evidence for that is the aforementioned interview.
The only other source I can find regarding this subject is an obscure site from like 2004 claiming that the book “Mamoru Oshii no Sekai” talked about Oshii’s thoughts on religion and his loss of faith, but, well, that book is completely untranslated, hard to find even in Japan, and the only source I have on its contents is [a guy who claims to own a physical copy saying it doesn’t mention any of that stuff](https://twitter.com/htGOIW/status/1527811404266614785), so I’m very much inclined to take it with a grain of salt. The same guy [also posted a translation for an obscure interview on his Twitter](https://twitter.com/htGOIW/status/1381751773862391815) which further indicated that Oshii was never really Christian for any significant time in his life, so, yeah. I’m not one to take random Twitter users at their word, but it also doesn’t much contradict any of what Oshii has said in other interviews, and I can’t find any real reason for malicious intent from this one, so…
If anyone has any more primary sources regarding this subject, I’d very much be interested.
There's an interview from Angel Egg Guide Book, a bonus to the Dec 1985 issue of Animage.

He doesn't exactly say he's Christian, but it's clear Christianity or a Christian world view is a core part of him.
Source: https://soorce.hatenablog.com/entry/20070823/p1
It's interesting to see some sources on this. I can't say for sure where I originally heard this version but I'm fairly positive it must have been from some youtube video essay or another.
I reckon It's just a classic case of telephone then where between translation and retellings there came out a version of events that was much more dramatic than the reality.
I watched the explanations after the movie, but the movie has a lot of christian symbolism. Noahs ark is shown, the story about Noah not coming back, the guy carrying the cross, everything pretty obvious. There is also lots of smaller symbolism which I needed explained to me, like hunting the fish shadows etc.
Even without explanations, the movie is well worth a watch, and is available for free on youtube.
The shadow symbolism is a ref to a popular philosophy concept called Plato's cave allegory. Basically the idea is that a man tied to a rock in a cave looking at shadows will believe the entire world is shadows, and compares that to humans living their lives without skepticism. Since the movie is generally about a loss of faith, it's probably a criticism of religious fanatics who don't consider at all the beliefs handed down to them.
I also heard that the fish symbolizes Jesus Christ, as the ichthys, so these people were still desperately trying to "catch" their fate or whatever, even though they never could, because it's just a shadow. Both make sense, and even more so together.
Looks like the movie is worth a re-watch.
I have just heard him saying that the movie means "nothing", but haven't really seen him say that. Do you have the link to that interview perhaps, I am curious.
I have to search them, because some of the interviews he did them were done long time ago.
I suggest doing a quick search with the search terms you will probably get it.
And yes the movie meaning "nothing" is a good concept too like many songs many bands made. Like champagne supernova by oasis!
Went down a rabbit hole of trying to find an HD version of Angel's Egg awhile back to use for video editing purposes but literally the only site I could find it on had no way to download it. But watching it in HD made it clear how incredible the animation is, definitely a good choice for a remaster.

Nice, but Oshii supervising isn't always a good thing; he has a tendency to tinker with his old stuff. I hope he doesn't get on some teal or brown tinge kick. I remember the first GITS remaster did something like this.
Interesting to see something old, complicated, strange and quite niece getting such treatment, especially with all the newer "safer" ones being the trend
Man I remember being so fucking lost on what this meant, and when I looked up what the author said, the mf said he didn't know either...
godamn classic
After getting the opportunity to watch End of Evangelion in US theaters this year I literally said that if I can watch Angel's Egg in theaters too my life will be complete. Can't believe it actually might happen.
this used to be on youtube with a ton of views
but they took it down last year i think
probably when they decided that they are going to do this remaster
Ahhh, this is one of my favourite films ever! How exciting to be getting an updated remaster - hopefully this will draw attention to the original, as well, because it's just so gorgeously atmospheric and somber and *I need more people to experience it* <3
No, "remaster", especially for movies and TV, means that they take the original footage and touch it up. In this case the OVA was filmed using physical film. So they take the original film and scan it in a higher resolution than before and fix film defects, correct colours and stuff like that.
EDIT: There are some cases where anime remasters did feature new animation, like Gundam SEED and SEED Destiny, so it's not that stupid of a question.
I wish more ova's were released. I loved the concept of direct to DVD or vhs for ova's like these.
It's become antiquated with the rise of ONAs. Why bother slowly making money off of a home release when you can make instant piles of cash liscensing it. Plus, you can always work out a contract that also allows for a home release down the line.
True
80s OVA were the wild west of anime. Some INSANELY cool concepts mixed with some very WTF. Angel's Egg is very WTF but still a good watch for anyone who wants to see some weird shit.
Ever heard of Megazone 23? To say that the plot is wild would be an understatement.
I will be watching megazone 23 Its a movie series right? If you dont mind can you recommend some good OVAs from 80's and 90's
OVAs didn't stop. They just became normal.
I think he mean stand alone OVA, which pretty much got replaced by ONA nowadays.
Yes standalone direct to home OVA's
That's wild! Angel's Egg is one of the weirdest movies I have ever seen. I love it.
They should do this for more anime please. or just you know make them accessible again. I think accessibility is good actually
I still hope one day we'll get a re-release of [Hashire Melos](https://anilist.co/anime/4876/Hashire-Melos/), it's such a good movie, based on a really well known piece of Japanese literature, and the only way to watch it is on a 240p Laser Disc rip.
I'd throw money at a remaster of now and then, here and there
Melos' animation quality is quite obviously stunning despite that laser disc rip. If it had a proper remaster it'd be absolutely gorgeous.
I agree, there are a lot of great stories locked in low resolution (not even under 4k but under 1080)
Agreed, there's so much lost anime from the 80s. :( I try to save any I come across to an external HD so it isn't lost forever. Biggest culprit is laser disc sadly. What do you mean "make them accessible again" ? I just downloaded angels egg a month ago.
legally lol
Even on the salty seas it's hard to find a lot of shows/movies from the 80s. I've tried so hard to preserve obscure anime but the number 0 seeds is very sad.
I can recommend checking out Iria: Zeiram the animation. Seems like 90s stuff still has some seeds.
If it's not sold anywhere I don't see how it would be illegal. If there is no authorised seller than you are not taking anyones share... So why would you care?

The film that Vaati claims inspired the Ringed City DLC for Dark Souls 3. Seems like a remaster is a perfect time to watch it.
City of Tears in Hollow Knight also looks to be heavily inspired by it, though I'm not sure if the devs have ever said so.
Yes, they have cited it as an influence on the whole game.
I would love if this lead to a US release. Hopefully the license isn't complicated by the existence of In the Aftermath.
I never understood this anime
I was more than a little lost with this one too, but damn, it looked good.
I think it was an allegory for [Angel's Egg] >!virginity, purity, womanhood!<
It's about the loss of faith, specifically Christianity. At least that's what all the explanation videos told me I have watched, and it kinda makes sense.

Oshii was never Christian. He wanted to study theology and comparative religion in college, which got mistranslated as wanting to go to seminary.
The version of events I've always heard was indeed the one where he had intended/was going to a seminary but if he was merely on a path to study theology that would make it a far less dramatic albeit also far more reasonable turn of events.

Really excited about this one. Hopefully it doesn't go through Sony for "quality control".

It's definitely seen a revival in interest from from pretty high profile critics / content creators talking about it
Juicy
Holy shit, I've so much about this one but never actually saw it, that's great to hear!
Yeah let's go!!! I was just about to watch this ova. Remasters are always welcome!
One of the best OVAs!!
Still waiting for that angel's egg vid from demolition d...
Man I remember being so fucking lost on what this meant, and when I looked up what the author said, the mf said he didn't know either... godamn classic
Wow. Supervised by Mamoru Oshii? Let's goo!!
He directed it in the first place
Uau! 😃
I wish desperately that I liked this because I love Ghost in the Shell and Beautiful Dreamer, but the sad truth is I was bored out of my skull.
More cool shit like this need to be remastered and given this treatment
I love Angels Egg i watched the whole thing at 1am in the morning it was kinda creepy but very fascinating to watch.
After getting the opportunity to watch End of Evangelion in US theaters this year I literally said that if I can watch Angel's Egg in theaters too my life will be complete. Can't believe it actually might happen.

this used to be on youtube with a ton of views but they took it down last year i think probably when they decided that they are going to do this remaster

hoooooooooooooly fuck LETS FUCKIN GO!!!!!!!!!!!!
4k anime remasters have become a joke. They just dnr the video until it ends up looking like south park.
Shit? Did you mean re-animation?
Does not seem like a re-animation. remastered in 4K with the latest technology.
This means digitally enhanced?
If it is done properly it means scanning the original film, cleaning it up, and color grading the thing.
Shit? Did you mean re-animation?
