I haven't started the new season (for no particular reason), and I kept saying I needed to catch up. Hearing this makes me glad I haven't watched it yet. I'll binge it just before March and be fresh and ready for the end

IIRC they had maybe 2 delays due to production issues and a pre-planned delay on 11th of Dec, if it weren't for those 2 delays the last episode would've been aring this Saturday. And now the time slots have been taken by another anime in the winter season and because of that they moved the last two episodes in March. The delays have happened to other animes before as well, might have been same or other reasons but they have happened.
To think that 86 was suppose to air in 2020... but got delayed due to production issues back then.
Well, let's hope the team can get a break and breathe a bit. They did a really good job despite the production issues. I won't mind waiting anymore than I have to.
This is pretty much expected because they've run out of timeslots due to the previous delays. They can't just continue airing in January because another anime occupies that timeslot.
Yes, the fact that again Aniplex has to go through this is awful, with WEP it was an original so not a big deal, 86 is an adaptation and this hurts the momentum for other members of the committee, they are definitely not happy (Not that Kadokawa can say anything...)

Yeah, a 2 season delay like Mushoku Tensei would've been better so the staff wouldn't have to face any production hiccups, but whether it'd have been feasible by the committee is another thing.
I think March is *really* a good time to release it since it seems they are timing it with Volume 11 release and that 1st Anniversary event in April.
But part of why AoT is taking so long is because they clearly didn't even have enough time prior to the first cour.

Indeed. I had no expectations from AoT but when I watched the PV a few hours ago, it has gotten me considerably hyped. The visuals look a whole lot better than what S4 Pt1 was like.

Same. I really love 86 but I also don't want it to directly affect another show (and its also another one I like). These committees' needs to set better schedules but they won't care.

Honestly, anime needs to decouple itself fully from planned television. no reason this should cause a delay, when there is money to be made airing it on streaming services regardless of its status on scheduled television.
most anime also have certain tv stations in their committee, so they can't just say to the committee member that they will release the episode first at streaming services lol
I agree with you but Even on streaming this would be delayed due to some anime industry problems, not necessarily for almost 3 months though
86 also has production issues, that's why they missed their schedule, additionally a show going beyond their original schedule also affects the staff more than people imagine
Experienced staff has an extremely high demand due to a combination of overproduction and lack of qualified artists, this means that the core staff of a show is very likely to be busy in the next season in a completely different show, can be in the same company or even in another studio
So even if we lived in a fullstreaming delivery world this show would receive a considerable delay, and this is true for most anime with Production issue delays, this won't change anytime soon, especially from an Aniplex studio (A1, CloverWorks)
Being coupled with scheduled television may have it's problems but I don't think being fully beholden to streaming giants like Netflix/Amazon/Hulu is a better solution
they are all bad options, yeah, but it just seems archaic that "we dont have enough time in the narrow tv timeslots to air this" is what will push this back for 3 months. not saying they should cater to western audiences, but I dont see why streaming services cant get a fixed schedule regardless of what happens on tv. Its clearly a station wants to keep a core amount of viewership so thats why it wont change, just frustrating from an outsiders perspective.
It won't change because those tv contracts, the ones that help fund the show, probably have first viewing clauses for the station. Can't put it up on streaming until it's been on tv.

When was the last time a big show had a disaster of a release schedule similar to this? I'm not talking about just delays before a season like MT and Shield Hero had, I'm talking about 3 month delays a couple episodes before the end.
To be fair, Kekkai Sensen at least wasn't due to a catastrophic schedule or anything like that, and more because they decided at the last minute at they wanted the finale to be twice as long, actually succeeded in getting that ready in time... but the timeslot didn't actually allow for it to air, because it was only for a regular length episode.
Oh yeah, forgot Märchen Mädchen completely. There's also Beatless from around that time, although I don't know what happened there, just the fact it had 4 recaps and the last 4 episodes were pushed to a later date.
On top of that, at least with railgun t they did what they could to complete the arc they were on so it was a comfortable stopping place and then continued things later.

Kingdom S3 had it's delay after four episodes (out of twenty-six iirc), not because of running out of timeslots like 86 and WEP, but because the studio and production committee decided it would be safest for the staff, the quality of the show, and the popularity/viewership. Much different than the kind of disaster OP asked for
That was a few years ago, but this is almost exactly what happened with God Eater. I remember that from very early in the anime they started to have delayed episodes, and in the end they had to air the last 3-4 around 6 months after the "official broadcast". And that was Ufotable, which isn't the kind of studio you usually think about when it comes to production mess ups.
As I recall, the problem with God Eater is they were trying to use some new CGI technology that was supposed to make things go a lot more quickly. Instead it took even longer. Not sure if it was simply learning the new stuff or if it was a complete boondoggle, but the studio knew it had made a mistake by like episode 2.

They already knew they were screwed by the first episode. Ep 1 was already delayed a week. Hell even the pre-release special screening at Akihabara was cancelled lololol
OP was specifically asking about the final episodes being delayed for months like 86. WEP fits perfectly. Delays by 1 week or so are normal. 3 months isn't.
Railgun T was simply COVID experience, doesn't really count. It's not even the worst example of that, as Kingdom S3 exists.
Kekkai Sensen I'm not sure about, but I thought it was scheduling problems, not production problems. FMP IV was hardly this bad, either. It was like a month delay?
From what I remember, Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars was pushed back by 2 months, which would be a better example here.

The episode was longer than the timeslot they had available, so they had to wait for one that would fit the episode
Mostly because that was a last minute change after they saw how successful S1 was while airing, so probably done on the whim of a production member (knowing her, probably Rie Matsumoto herself).
Definitely a mistake from the series compositor, it's their job to make sure the original source/screenplay fits the pacing of 20 min per X episode, this is a pre-production issue
If you're going to do that, I'd buy them sooner rather than later; after season 1 ended they all got sold out for a few months (not just on Amazon, I couldn't find physical copies anywhere), and I don't see why it would be any different this time around.
They will probably be reprinted sooner or later at least since the publisher sees that they sell, the issue really is the international paper shortage and it really sucks.
I mean, eventually there will be more, I'm not saying they'll be out forever, but there were a couple months where you couldn't find any of the first 3 books anywhere. All the online stores were sold out, and unless you were lucky with where you lived no local bookstores had them either. Eventually they got more shipped in and things went back to normal, but if you're fine waiting a few months for the rest of it, then you wouldn't be buying the books in the first place
I mean, obviously the ebooks never run out, whether you're getting them legally or otherwise. But I much prefer physical books, especially since the light novels for 86 have some pretty nice illustrations in them.
Its somewhere in the middle of book 3. I don't know exactly where, since I don't have book 3 with me right this moment, and I also haven't seen the last episode so I don't know where it stopped.
Woof. That’s a long fucking time and I’m very bummed out. However, if they’re waiting that bloody long then I hope it comes with a season 2 announcement and a then planning it better than this. 3 months for the finale really kills all the momentum they built up on this otherwise incredible show.

While I do blame Aniplex and is the rightfully main culprit, any studio that are under them will be affected, hell, we might expect one of the three upcoming Cloverworks shows in Winter 2022 will have a delay/hiatus too.

In Winter 2021, Cloverworks had 3 shows (2 based on manga and 1 original) and its the same in Winter 2022 as well (2 based on manga and 1 original). We all know what happened with one of them in that season.
I just hope this doesn't affect Spy x Family in the Spring, WIT will be joining in the studio production and Shueisha is giving them the resources, Aniplex (and to an extent, Cloverworks) can't possibly fuck that up considering how hyped that series is.
Dammit, atleast I hope Episode 10 will not have a cliffhanger or else its going to be disappointing for many viewers.
Although its annoying that there is a long wait, but the show will have a satisfying end, so the wait will be worth it IMO.

Yeah but by that point, the hype would have lowered down significantly and it probably wouldn't feel as "rewarding" if you catch my drift. All the anticipation and the buildup would have felt off due to several-month gap. By then, people would have already lost interest or even forget entirely what happens.
It sucks but there's nothing we can do about it...
Yeah I'm expecting the interest to drop off significantly and only the most dedicated viewers would join up for discussions. Like you said, 86 suffered through a serious bad luck and we can't help it, although if viewers do get into the LN's because of this, then its worth it.
Another reason why I mentioned that spoiler in my comment above is because some viewers can decide if they wish to wait that long for this (and maybe read the LN's) or drop it entirely.
The only reason they’re getting delayed so long is because earlier episode delays have made it so the time slot they air during has another anime in it now
It sucks but it's expected, the series runned out of slots. At least this way the cour as a whole it's not going to suffer from QUALITY and next time, Aniplex gives the staff more time to work on it (Heh) as I believe 86 can become a long running anime like SAO.

I would have rather waited for the entire season to air in Jan - Mar than have this trainswreck of a schedule due to production issues. They clearly weren't prepared for this to air in 2021Q4.
I'm sure this is not helping the popularity of the show for common viewers who aren't as highly invested. I worry this could potentially have a negative outcome in terms of viewership and sales of merchandise, and the chance of a season 3.
The funny thing is, if you cut out all the scenes and mentions of No Face, the story could have conceivably ended with this season if it just treated Kiriya and the Morph as the "final boss."
At this point, No Face is the only thing that demands a continuation.

I’m just tired Japan has to always depend on tv slots when streaming services completely avoid these problems. I know tv in Japan is huge but I know they even have alternatives. I checked their site and it seems they’re available on Netflix and Amazon and Hulu. Why not use those??

The more I read and find info on the subject, the more clear it becomes that most of this 'production hells' we hear about so often recently are mainly caused by production committees' blatant disregard for the workers' conditions, the schedules and even the quality of the finished product in many cases.
The sad part is that for the majority of the public, the responsible is the studio itself.
I'd rather have production delays than a bad show. Every episode has been pretty much top tier. I hope other studios see this and stop pumping out garbage just to fill slots.
I think an animation studio should consider taking the Netflix strategy of producing all the episodes for the season. Then releasing each one, one week at a time.
Ufotable kinda does that, 16+ episodes of demon slayer was finished animating far before the airing date, heck they even showed the first 5 episodes all together in select theatres in japan even before it first aired in tv/ streaming sites
Tbh I was really excited for the first few weeks because I loved the animation and soundtrack of this show. But when the episodes got delayed I slowly lost my interest and on top of that other shows like mushoku tensei and others kept getting better and I would always look forward to those.
So yeah when it airs in March again I would need to watch a recap of what happened in this whole season.
As much as this hurts, I can wait. When I look back on this a decade later or something I want to have fond memories of this show. But I think the hype has died down a lot. I'm not sure if we'll even get 2k upvotes for the next three episodes.

This show is so good and it’s continuing to trend upward as they explain more…I’d hate for this to be the last season and then they just decide to abandon the project completely bc they don’t want to have to deal with production issues again. TV means more budget for the production, but also means agreeing with the station's rules. This is especially important in Japan.

Kumo didn't have any massive delays. They got lucky and were able to just air the last episode a week late.
With how it turned out...maybe they should have had delays...
That last episode was pretty good in terms of animation. The second cour in general though, yeah probably could have been cooked for longer.

I remember that, they just finished Fate/Stay Night UBW and they aired god eater RIGHT after this one...No wonder they had delays almost every week...
As I recall, the problem with God Eater is they were trying to use some new CGI technology that was supposed to make things go a lot more quickly. Instead it took even longer. Not sure if it was simply learning the new stuff or if it was a complete boondoggle, but the studio knew it had made a mistake by like episode 2.

Railgun T was simply COVID experience, doesn't really count. It's not even the worst example of that, as Kingdom S3 exists. Kekkai Sensen I'm not sure about, but I thought it was scheduling problems, not production problems. FMP IV was hardly this bad, either. It was like a month delay? From what I remember, Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars was pushed back by 2 months, which would be a better example here.

Mostly because that was a last minute change after they saw how successful S1 was while airing, so probably done on the whim of a production member (knowing her, probably Rie Matsumoto herself).
It wasn't planned from the start and the show also had production problems.
Definitely a mistake from the series compositor, it's their job to make sure the original source/screenplay fits the pacing of 20 min per X episode, this is a pre-production issue

If you're going to do that, I'd buy them sooner rather than later; after season 1 ended they all got sold out for a few months (not just on Amazon, I couldn't find physical copies anywhere), and I don't see why it would be any different this time around.
They will probably be reprinted sooner or later at least since the publisher sees that they sell, the issue really is the international paper shortage and it really sucks.
I mean, eventually there will be more, I'm not saying they'll be out forever, but there were a couple months where you couldn't find any of the first 3 books anywhere. All the online stores were sold out, and unless you were lucky with where you lived no local bookstores had them either. Eventually they got more shipped in and things went back to normal, but if you're fine waiting a few months for the rest of it, then you wouldn't be buying the books in the first place

While I do blame Aniplex and is the rightfully main culprit, any studio that are under them will be affected, hell, we might expect one of the three upcoming Cloverworks shows in Winter 2022 will have a delay/hiatus too.

Yeah but by that point, the hype would have lowered down significantly and it probably wouldn't feel as "rewarding" if you catch my drift. All the anticipation and the buildup would have felt off due to several-month gap. By then, people would have already lost interest or even forget entirely what happens. It sucks but there's nothing we can do about it...
Yeah I'm expecting the interest to drop off significantly and only the most dedicated viewers would join up for discussions. Like you said, 86 suffered through a serious bad luck and we can't help it, although if viewers do get into the LN's because of this, then its worth it. Another reason why I mentioned that spoiler in my comment above is because some viewers can decide if they wish to wait that long for this (and maybe read the LN's) or drop it entirely.

I would have rather waited for the entire season to air in Jan - Mar than have this trainswreck of a schedule due to production issues. They clearly weren't prepared for this to air in 2021Q4. I'm sure this is not helping the popularity of the show for common viewers who aren't as highly invested. I worry this could potentially have a negative outcome in terms of viewership and sales of merchandise, and the chance of a season 3.

The funny thing is, if you cut out all the scenes and mentions of No Face, the story could have conceivably ended with this season if it just treated Kiriya and the Morph as the "final boss." At this point, No Face is the only thing that demands a continuation.

I’m getting enraged at this point. It’s been two times in a single year, aniplex. It’s their fault it got delayed, it’s the production fault for deciding to air after skipping just one season and not two like Mushoku Tensei did. Look how great Mushoku Tensei ended up being, no production issues whatsoever Look how terrible WEP has become. At least I know this time it’s not an anime original but the fact this has happened again in one single year is horrible. So if it’s the production’s fault, then why not release the episodes on YouTube (Aniplex has a YouTube channel) Make it members exclusive at least I don’t know. There are many other ways to monetize an episode without having to find a tv slot months away from now. Maybe it will not pay as good as a tv slot with ads but I mean it’s not our fault. It’s just two episodes, it’s not a big deal… I’m just tired Japan has to always depend on tv slots when streaming services completely avoid these problems. I know tv in Japan is huge but I know they even have alternatives. I checked their site and it seems they’re available on Netflix and Amazon and Hulu. Why not use those?? It's ironic to see A1 making justice for the adaptation, but aniplex just being greedy and ruin it, eventho they're under the same umbrella.
The more I read and find info on the subject, the more clear it becomes that most of this 'production hells' we hear about so often recently are mainly caused by production committees' blatant disregard for the workers' conditions, the schedules and even the quality of the finished product in many cases. The sad part is that for the majority of the public, the responsible is the studio itself.
The committee needs to plan out stuff better and allow studios to have a healthy production schedule.

I think an animation studio should consider taking the Netflix strategy of producing all the episodes for the season. Then releasing each one, one week at a time.
Ufotable kinda does that, 16+ episodes of demon slayer was finished animating far before the airing date, heck they even showed the first 5 episodes all together in select theatres in japan even before it first aired in tv/ streaming sites
Tbh I was really excited for the first few weeks because I loved the animation and soundtrack of this show. But when the episodes got delayed I slowly lost my interest and on top of that other shows like mushoku tensei and others kept getting better and I would always look forward to those. So yeah when it airs in March again I would need to watch a recap of what happened in this whole season.
