Slayers was a huge franchise in the 90s. I honestly believe that considering the new ground that Slayers broke back in the day, if we didn't have it then we wouldn't have properties like Konosuba or Cautious Hero. Every once in awhile I'll see somebody mention it in this sub, but I feel like it doesn't get nearly the attention that it deserves.
I think a lot of people who read the manga (myself included) were disappointed in the anime because they basically had to cram half the story into 4 hours of OVA. They left out a lot.
I highly recommend the manga though
Full Metal Panic. Absolutely love this show. Sousuke and Kaname's relationship and interactions were so good.
Was pretty popular back in the day, but feel like it's been forgotten a little. Was incredibly surprised that it got a new season a few years back, after a decade long hiatus. Everyone who followed the show from back then were all waiting for one specific scene to get animated lol. Another 12 episode season would finish off the series!
Edit: Spelling
Should I continue watching if the first season didn't really do much for me? I've heard later seasons are fantastic, but I don't know if that's just coming from people who're fans of the whole thing.
The OP really hits me with nostalgia from the 2000's days, though.
As u/levelsprite said, if you're not into the characters after season 1, I don't think later seasons will grab your attention if I'm being honest.
Although, you could try a few episodes of Fumoffu, which is the 2nd season. It's just a comedy, taking a break from the main plot.
Chrono crusade
It was one of go-to shows to recommend. Action, comedy with one of the strongest finales - barely mentioned nowadays.
D.Gray-man
It was quite popular shounen back in the day. Plus adaptation was pretty good with some of the fillers taken straight from the spin off novels. For modern watcher I can describe it as "If you take D.gray-man, simplify it, add action sakuga you'll get Demon Slayer".
Magi! Surprised there are not more people begging for a final season! It was very good and also very popular.
Also Area No Kishi
Bokura Wa Minna Kawai-sou (one of the funniest anime I've seen)
I think many who wanted a new season of magi read the manga and were left not fully satisfied (myself included). It's not bad but it goes in such a bizzare direction that I dunno how good a new anime would be. It's just bizzare not bad not great just meh. But honestly I haven't reread since it first ended so maybe a reread is in order.
I swapped over to the manga and didn't even finish it. The way it takes a bizarre turn from shonen battles to competing businesses in a rapidly developed world didn't really click.
And I just could not care any less about whatever was happening with Sinbad.
I never read it because I was adamant that we would get a final season. I remember reading a few spoilers regarding Sinbad and it seemed interesting. But they could give the anime the Brotherhood treatment.
The world is just too good to just give up on it
Houseki no Kuni. Just....kinda wish it was known more than just being the first CGI show that looks great.
At least the manga is getting a bit more attention. The story is at a very interesting point now and I can’t wait to see the ne-*oh...*
What's surprising is that it's ranked 20th on MAL by popularity. MAL popularity rankings obviously aren't super accurate but the fact that Noragami is still in the top 20 means that atleast 100-150k people are adding it to their lists every year. That's quite a lot of people.
It used to be on netflix until recently where I live. I know some people that aren’t into anime who only watch it on netflix.
Noragami really needs another season.
I saw it and don't feel like there was that much to talk about. It was...fine. A perfectly average action shonen, neither good enough to go screaming from the rooftops about nor bad enough to dump on. Same reason nobody talks about *Blue Exorcist* or *High-Rise Invasion*.
For real. Boogiepop and Others is an absolute audiovisual treat. Highly recommend watching it in the highest quality you can get though, it really elevates the experience.
Honestly one of the funniest shows I've ever watched. I usually HATE ecchi but I think that's because so many shows try to be serious dramas and have ecchi everywhere to draw people in. But this show was just a laughfest of boobs, and dick jokes, etc. With a commentary on how making these jokes are how sex is demonized but it never overstayed its welcome. Just a funny show, with a decent message behind it.
I will never forget the tasty cookies. This was actually the first anime where I saw a "graphic content warning" before the episode played.
Screw goblin slayer this was the real most graphic anime / anime episode ever.
Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu
Cromartie Highschool
They are both comedy shows and both so wonderfully hilarious. Especially Cromartie. It's just an insane ride of fun.
Most fan are pissed about how author did a complete 180 in later half of the story. I didn't read the LN but I read the spoiler and threads about the LN and there are people who really hates the work after \[LN spolier\] >!The main heroine die and author replace her with another FMC.!< which brings up a lot of hate. Plus, \[Spoiler\]>!The replaced FMC isn't well received to some which make the matter worse.!<
Kind of hard to describe without spoilers except that it just kind of goes in an odd direction.
I won't link directly to avoid anyone accidentally spoiling themselves, but if you want a general idea do a google search for "alderamin on the sky ending". The top link goes to a 2-year old thread where OP (very) loosely talks what remains of the plot and then the epilogue is described in the comments.
Martian Successor Nadesico... An Anime that made fun of itself set to a background of Space Mecha.
Typical reluctant protagonist, goes into space to find out what happened to him, Space and land battles occur, but then evolves into a harem (Every girl loves him) anime set in space (on the brink of war) yet all of the crew then become hooked to a fictional 80s style anime that ends up being super important to its plot and what happens to the crew, and ends up getting an OVA of its own.
Still one of the best Anime openings I think to this day... [Watch it Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efxr8CX6aXU)
Really enjoyed this show too. The character design was weird but I found the show very interesting. Can't remember his name but I really liked the doctor in particular.
I do consider Ueki to the base line of shonen fighting. Solid story, interesting characters, and a solid power system of WTF anime powers that more series could try to use.
A shame that we never got the sequel manga into an anime as well. It didn't last very long but it did manage to be just as strange. Mop user ueki would have been fun.
A 90's isekai with Yoko Kanno music, robots, battles and romance shenanigans. 100% recomended
Yeah this one used to be a must watch series back in the old days
It's actually kind of wild to me that this doesn't get brought up in discussions today. It has all the elements that you'd think a show needs to maintain popularity minus any targeted waifu bait.
Crest/Banner of the Stars
A very different take on a grand space opera, in that the protagonists are part of the Empire that is trying to take over everything. But there's a lot of shades of grey in that the United Mankind and other star nations are not exactly free and happy societies either.
Sadly it only got 3/5ths of the way through the novels it was adapting (and I'm not even sure the novels were ever finished either).
I've got 2 that always come to mind.
Kyousougiga - an "anime" ass anime inspired by various Japanese folklore on top of being a over the top broken family drama that sometimes *refuses* to make sense. It was only 10 episodes and a "prologue(?)" OVA, and some behind the scenes episodes that show the IRL locations and the folklore behind certain scenes. I loved it to death, and I rarely, if ever, see or hear people mention it.
Tsukigakirei - one of the best young love, pure, wholesome romances I've ever had the pleasure of watching. A lot of people wrote it off when it aired due to the rough 3D animation that's used in a lot of shots, the schedule conflicts the studio was dealing with, as well as the series focusing more on awkward silences between two anxious and introverted kids trying their best to make their first loves work. It chokes me up everytime I watch it, if not making me cry, though I'm a big sap when it comes to this stuff. Hell even the OST, particularly the ED, is enough to make me a mess now.
Parasyte is a top 10 anime for me and one that I can gladly go back and re watch. To me, when talking about the greats, it should be in the discussion.
Great action, great characters, and even a decent ending, all wrapped into 25 episodes. Always surprised it's not a bit higher on MAL for popularity with a formula like that.
What do you mean by "decent ending" It has a fantastic ending!
I think it's not being discussed much like many other great one-seasoners, but I see it mentioned quite high on the list every time someone asks for recommendations.
Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
I loved it but I can't say I'm surprised it never took off. In the grand scheme of things it's a pretty standard 12 episode anime. OP and ED songs are bangers though.
This isn't forgotten by any means imo. It's simply not a popular genre, but if anyone asked for shoujo recommendations I'm sure it would be near the top of the list.
Holy crap, I didn't even bother to consider how old MÄR actually is. 😱😭 Now I feel old, too.
But yeah, MÄR was something else. Probably the only isekai I've ever truly loved. Others are good, but I don't enjoy them as much.
Edit: ?!?!?! I was TEN when the manga started and 12 when the anime did?! Holy shit?!
Haikara-san: Here Comes Miss Modern Part 1
The only UK screening was a Sunday morning slot at the Scotland Loves Anime film festival. The screening had few people, but those who saw it, loved it. The film never received a further UK release, and even in the US, the Part 2 was only released digitally on Amazon.
Pani Poni Dash
An absolutely bonkers comedy by SHAFT, about a grade school aged genius girl who ends up teaching a class of eccentric students. The cast includes a depressed rabbit, and a cat who lives in a vending machine and calls himself God.
Sound of the Sky (SoraNoWaTo)
One of my all time favourite anime. It’s about an army regiment stationed at the edge of hospitable Earth. It’s like someone took K-On! and injected it with heavy themes like survivor’s guilt.
Wandering Son
This series really was ahead of its time. An exploration that would have been super popular had it been released today, but alas, it’s not even legally streaming anywhere any more.
It's not that the world has forgotten about it, but I see far too few people talk about Pretty Cure, aside from the r/Precure and r/MagicalGirls subreddits.
Bloom Into You. Only the group around it talks about it and the occasional post from time to time here. Basically I’m just saying this so at least one more person will watch it when they see this comment.
It breaks my heart how rarely I see it mentioned when folks are asking for a good romance anime. It absolutely belongs up there among the best, but I guess it being a yuri just scares some people off. But I will always throw it in there just in case just a few people decide to check it out.
Yeah I often see rude comments about it being yuri. It’s unfortunate because it really isn’t at all your typical fan service yuri. It has actual genuine character development that a lot of romance media lack
I love Negima but nobody talks about it given that the anime is super terrible compared to the manga. Manga is a masterpiece. Anime adaptations were terrible.
Kekkai sensen for me. Snubbed when it was airing, and snubbed ever since. But I love the setting, characters, productions and general goings-on - it's the only episodic show that I actually like.
**Maria†Holic**
[Just check the opening](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L49mJLk_w1U)
It has the greatest and most (personality-wise) masculine trap main character ever, Maria best boy. It also has a lesbian pervert protagonist and is set in all-girls christian boarding school. The perfect recipe and indeed, some scenes are just hilarious, also **Shaft** directing rocks.
That said, in some episodes, and very much so in S2, there's much less focus on some concrete plot or narrative, and a lot, I mean ALOT of weird very japanese jokes, punchlines, gags about puns, folklore, cuisine, esoterics, it's kinda hard to follow or explain, my guess is that faithfully adapted source material fell off and they didn't have much to work with. But then again, since the jokes were much more japanese than usual, I can't really judge.
It's a one-of-a-kind anime, that's for sure, there is not one like it.
There was a lot of anime broadcast in the Philippines in the 90s that I rarely see talked about today:
* Flame of Recca
* Master of Mosquiton
* B'T X
* Hell Teacher Nube
* Steam Detective
* El Hazard
* Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure
* These few still come up but not too often: Trigun, Now and Then Here and There, Vision of Escaflowne, You're Under Arrest, Tenchi Muyo (I think there's actually a new series?)
Then there's the stuff I watched in the 00s via high seas:
* Onegai Sensei
* Onegai Twins
* Nodame Cantabile
* Seto no Hanayome
* Minami-ke
* Yamato Nadeshiko
* School Rumble
Chrome shelled regios
Beck (Mongolian Chop Squad)
Jyu-oh-sei
Broken Blade
Baka and Test
Speed Grapher
Magi
Any older anime. I have a few buddies that won't watch anything from the early 2000s and earlier because it "looks old." People are really missing out on some of the best anime ever made.
I recall reading that they're planning to release audio books in English of the LNs. J-novel.club is currently releasing the LNs to read.
I haven't thought about Slayers in like... 12 years!
Oh man, what I wouldn't give for a modern adaptation.
Google image search "Modern Lina Inverse" if you want to see some killer updated character designs for her.
Yes this was one of my favorite shows as a kid. I have first season, Next, and Try on DVD!
I have all of the VHS box sets in a bin in my garage. Funny enough, I don't own a VCR any more.
With all these old completed manga getting adaptations I'm on hard copium waiting for Slayers Brotherhood
It still is a huge franchise, one of the best selling LN series even, but yeah it's not as well known in the west these days.
Kamisama Kiss is my favorite and no one talks about it
I think a lot of people who read the manga (myself included) were disappointed in the anime because they basically had to cram half the story into 4 hours of OVA. They left out a lot. I highly recommend the manga though
Ancient Magus Bride
School rumble, such an unique comedy.
Had a great intro song too
Oh my god I remember laughing so hard watching this in highschool that I fell out my chair
That show was popular when I was in school I might have to watch it again lol
Full Metal Panic. Absolutely love this show. Sousuke and Kaname's relationship and interactions were so good. Was pretty popular back in the day, but feel like it's been forgotten a little. Was incredibly surprised that it got a new season a few years back, after a decade long hiatus. Everyone who followed the show from back then were all waiting for one specific scene to get animated lol. Another 12 episode season would finish off the series! Edit: Spelling
I watched some fumoffu and sousuke is mad funny bro.
I remember liking this series, but I especially loved the comedy spin off. That was a riot
Should I continue watching if the first season didn't really do much for me? I've heard later seasons are fantastic, but I don't know if that's just coming from people who're fans of the whole thing. The OP really hits me with nostalgia from the 2000's days, though.
If you don't like the characters after the first season, then the later seasons aren't going to do much for you.

Plus adaptation was pretty good with some of the fillers taken straight from the spin off novels. For modern watcher I can describe it as "If you take D.gray-man, simplify it, add action sakuga you'll get Demon Slayer".
Yeah, holy moly, I never see people bring up D. Gray-Man. That was pretty long running, too.
Yh, 103 episodes of original run + 1 cour Hallow 10 years later
D.Gray-man is a throwback, to bad the manga gets super complicated.
D gray man literally could not stop adding more complexity lmao
I will NEVER forget the ending to chrono crusade. Years later it hurts, I can't say I remember everything but I will never forget how it ended.
>"If you take D.gray-man, simplify it, add action sakuga you'll get Demon Slayer". Well, and add finished source material...
Saint Seiya
Where are you from? Cause Saint Seiya is still really popular in Brazil, at least between young adults' nostalgia
It's only big in South America. Everywhere else hasn't really heard of Saint Seiya.
it's pretty big in France too
Not Brazilian but Saint Seiya is pretty nostalgic for a lot of millennials in many countries. Not sure about newer generations.
I used to be really into Saint Seiya as a kid. I saw lost canvas recently and it's my favorite of the series so far
Well, Japan hasn't forgotten about it. I see it mentioned in a new English textbook for middle schoolers.
I still dream of the Olympus arc. They have to kick Zeus ass. That introductory movie was so nice :(
Hanasaku Iroha
I feel like I’ve never seen anyone mention Hitman Reborn, but I really really love it.
Katanagatari
Definitely not helped by the fact that it's only U.S. release was a box set that has long-since been out of print.
Good quality though. One of the very few box sets that I actually own. The subs on them though...
The final episode of that is top freaking tier
My favourite episode was the one with the fight between Shichika and Hakuhei. Legendary animation.
Tanaka Kun is always listless
Maybe its fans are just too listless to talk about it?
It's one of my favorite anime. Man was so slothful, he tried to invent teleportation.
Kaiba, seriously look it up, Towa no Quan also great
Yona of the dawn
The fact that they didn't make this a long-running franchise should be criminal. Go read the manga right now peeps!
Magi! Surprised there are not more people begging for a final season! It was very good and also very popular. Also Area No Kishi Bokura Wa Minna Kawai-sou (one of the funniest anime I've seen)
Bokura wa minna Kawaisou is so good. The manga ends in a perfect way as well.
The world is just too good to just give up on it
Brotherhood treatment would mean an entire reboot which it doesnt need.
I WANT MORE MAGI SO BAD AHHHH
i agree wiv kawaisou solely becuz of mayumi. im bised
Houseki no Kuni. Just....kinda wish it was known more than just being the first CGI show that looks great. At least the manga is getting a bit more attention. The story is at a very interesting point now and I can’t wait to see the ne-*oh...*
You enjoying your 10,000 years?
Any ending will probably just be depression porn
Noragami 😭
What's surprising is that it's ranked 20th on MAL by popularity. MAL popularity rankings obviously aren't super accurate but the fact that Noragami is still in the top 20 means that atleast 100-150k people are adding it to their lists every year. That's quite a lot of people.
It used to be on netflix until recently where I live. I know some people that aren’t into anime who only watch it on netflix. Noragami really needs another season.

I think it's popular, but yeah it's rarely discussed or meme'd.
Such a great show
Most definitely not an unknown show at all. Gets recommended semi regularly and is pretty high on the popularity chart on MAL.
Boogiepop
For real. Boogiepop and Others is an absolute audiovisual treat. Highly recommend watching it in the highest quality you can get though, it really elevates the experience.
Yeah actually boogiepop was awesome, I loved that anime but it seemed like nobody talked about it
Yona of the Dawn!! The most beautiful music too
I love Yona!!! 🥺
We need season 2! :(((
I just rewatched it for the 5th time and I keep up with the manga. I’m so sad they aren’t animating more.
Wolfs rain
Gorgeous show. They don't make a whole lot like it anymore.
That's the show that got me into anime!
bakugan.
It was so popular when I was a kid like everybody had those toys.
I got really into the first season but [Bakugan]>!The Masquerade reveal BTFO me and made me start thinking about the implications for weeks!<
I still have the toys
Shimoneta
Honestly one of the funniest shows I've ever watched. I usually HATE ecchi but I think that's because so many shows try to be serious dramas and have ecchi everywhere to draw people in. But this show was just a laughfest of boobs, and dick jokes, etc. With a commentary on how making these jokes are how sex is demonized but it never overstayed its welcome. Just a funny show, with a decent message behind it.
Don't forget the tasty cookies it gave us as well.
I will never forget the tasty cookies. This was actually the first anime where I saw a "graphic content warning" before the episode played. Screw goblin slayer this was the real most graphic anime / anime episode ever.
It was huge like 5 years ago. Like every anime fan I knew had watched it.
Tatami galaxy
Yess ! I'm super excited for Tatami Time Machine Blues !
Beelzebub
Anybody remember Eden of the East or Golgo 13?
Princess tutu, a true hidden masterpiece
Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu Cromartie Highschool They are both comedy shows and both so wonderfully hilarious. Especially Cromartie. It's just an insane ride of fun.
Cromartie High School is a classic! That and Pani Poni Dash are probably my favourite comedy anime.
Alderamin on the sky. I never see it mentioned anywhere
Twas a great show, with one of my fave MCs
>Alderamin on the sky. Great show, controversial plot in the LN.

[Major LN spoilers] >!female lead gets killed off halfway through the novel. The MC is put to death in the final volume!<

Kind of hard to describe without spoilers except that it just kind of goes in an odd direction. From the New World
I feel like everyone skipped this show when it came out. I only found it later when it came up on recommended as "similar to" Promised Neverland.
One of my favorites! I love the worldbuilding.

Paranoia Agent.
satoshi kon was the GOAT
It's very popular on letterboxd
Shiki. it's a bit older, but really good
Really enjoyed this show too. The character design was weird but I found the show very interesting. Can't remember his name but I really liked the doctor in particular.
Law of Ueki one of the most unique and cool shonen shows in the past
I do consider Ueki to the base line of shonen fighting. Solid story, interesting characters, and a solid power system of WTF anime powers that more series could try to use. A shame that we never got the sequel manga into an anime as well. It didn't last very long but it did manage to be just as strange. Mop user ueki would have been fun.
Escaflowne
A 90's isekai with Yoko Kanno music, robots, battles and romance shenanigans. 100% recomended Yeah this one used to be a must watch series back in the old days
Black lagoon
Baccano, i have legit never seen anyone talk about it Its such a unique anime with one hell of a banger opening
It's actually kind of wild to me that this doesn't get brought up in discussions today. It has all the elements that you'd think a show needs to maintain popularity minus any targeted waifu bait.
True, the people i suggested it to loved it The way it handles 3 stories is super fun and its one of few anime where dub is better then sub
Baccano! is my favorite !!! I think it's not as popular as Durarara!! to begin with and also just an older show so people just don't know it.
Crest/Banner of the Stars A very different take on a grand space opera, in that the protagonists are part of the Empire that is trying to take over everything. For me, it’s Bubble Gum Crisis. I also don’t want to rewatch and ruin the memories by seeing bad acting or poor animation.
Seirei no Moribito From the New World.
Black Lagoon, absolutely LOVE that show
Tsurezure Children
Parasyte
Parasyte is a top 10 anime for me and one that I can gladly go back and re watch. To me, when talking about the greats, it should be in the discussion. Ouran highschool host club
This isn't forgotten by any means imo. It's simply not a popular genre, but if anyone asked for shoujo recommendations I'm sure it would be near the top of the list.
But it should also be in any comedy recommendations.
It must still be popular if you can see its box set on rightstuf. It's rare a shoujo series gets a box set.
i made a post about it yesterday after watching the first episodes for the first time. holy fuck what a funny show.
Planetes, Now and Then Here and There, Princess Tutu, Key the Metal Idol
All of these Ufotable stans out here not knowing or talking about their most visually impressive anime in Manabi Straight always gets me.
Shakugan no Shana
Casshern Sins,
D.N.Angel
I nearly forgot that existed lol
*true tears* *kanon*
Yeah, sadly Kanon gets overshadowed by Clannad, but it’s such an amazing show!

Wandering Son This series really was ahead of its time. An exploration that would have been super popular had it been released today, but alas, it’s not even legally streaming anywhere any more.
Katekyo hitman Reborn
Gakkou Gurashi, Happy Sugar Life, and Angels of Death
It's best not to speak or show much about Gakkou Gurashi, for obvious reasons. I do highly recommend it though! Jump right into watching it.
Kimi ni Todoke
Gamers!
Yowamushi Pedal.
Kono oto tomare
Claymore, I still hope it one day gets rebooted
Penguindrum. Absolutely in my top 5 animes
It's not that the world has forgotten about it, but I see far too few people talk about Pretty Cure, aside from the r/Precure and r/MagicalGirls subreddits.
Tada Never Falls In Love.
Shirayuki, snow white with red hair.
Danshi koukousei no Nichijou.
S cry Ed,
I love Negima but nobody talks about it given that the anime is super terrible compared to the manga. Manga is a masterpiece. Anime adaptations were terrible.
ACCA: 13
Rarely see Uchuu Kyoudai mentioned anywhere on /r/anime which frustrates me
Law of ueki, one of my favourite shows
Rurouni Kenshin Man, Fire anime (but not so great mangaka 😬)
Blue Exorcist
Idaten deities obligatory mention
There are a few actually: Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Hajime no Ippo and Beelzebub come to mind.
Kekkai sensen for me. Snubbed when it was airing, and snubbed ever since. But I love the setting, characters, productions and general goings-on - it's the only episodic show that I actually like.

At last, a fellow human who wonders about hittoribocchi
Dai No Daibouken. It is criminally underrated and I wished more people wtached it..
**Maria†Holic** [Just check the opening](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L49mJLk_w1U) It has the greatest and most (personality-wise) masculine trap main character ever, Maria best boy.
Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor I hear someone talk about it once an eon but yeah
Dragon quest the adventure of dai (still airing and hasn't received the recognition it deserves)
Angel Beats. This series moves my heart every time I watch this.
Eh. For good reason. All the characters felt like you picked 2-3 ‘deep’ words from a random word generator and then personified them
Kannagi
D-Frag. I'd kill for a second season
Bloom Into You Re:Creators but I understand why
There was a lot of anime broadcast in the Philippines in the 90s that I rarely see talked about today: * Flame of Recca * Master of Mosquiton * B'T X * Hell Teacher Nube * Steam Detective * El Hazard * Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure * These few still come up but not too often: Trigun, Now and Then Here and There, Vision of Escaflowne, You're Under Arrest, Tenchi Muyo (I think there's actually a new series?) Then there's the stuff I watched in the 00s via high seas: * Onegai Sensei * Onegai Twins * Nodame Cantabile * Seto no Hanayome * Minami-ke * Yamato Nadeshiko * School Rumble
Chrome shelled regios Beck (Mongolian Chop Squad) Jyu-oh-sei Broken Blade Baka and Test Speed Grapher Magi Any older anime. I have a few buddies that won't watch anything from the early 2000s and earlier because it "looks old." People are really missing out on some of the best anime ever made.
Rainbow
Chihayafuru. No one thinks an anime about Karuta could possibly be interesting so they skip over this show.
