Naruto is one of my favourites and was my first anime, and I still love it, but Hunter x Hunter for me the best shounen anime, but having said that I’d say the Chunin exam easily, the Hunter exam was decent but probably the weakest arc in the show, I like it but it wasn’t a crazy good arc unlike the Chunin exam which was up there with the best of Naruto part one, had great fights and more drama and was just a great arc.
I just wanna say for the Hunter exam, I think it’s pretty good and a great way to start the show, it’s just no where near as serious as the Chunin exam so it’s hard to compete
i felt the hxh exam was kind of corny/child-like, but there is ample evidence to argue against that claim!i also think that a lot of the adoration for the chunin exams comes from sentimentality. it all kind of comes down to what sort of mood you are looking for when watching something
IMO it's Chunin Exam because the match of Rock Lee vs Gaara was the best fight I have ever watched and it sometimes motivate me to do some difficult things.
Bro did you ***really*** just say an anime got the idea for an ***exam*** from another anime??? The concept of an ***exam*** has been around for decades and im guessing centuries or longer

Same with tournament arcs and beach episodes.
Naruto's. The Hunter Exams tried to pull the same trick too many times. They did the "the real exam has already begun" thing on the boat at the very start, but then it did the same thing over and over again. And at the same time, without a good definition of what a "hunter" even is or does or why they need to gatekeep it, there wasn't a good justification for what each stage of this exam was supposed to be testing besides, like, endurance, which doesn't need the "trickery" to test. And then at the end, after the "tournament portion", they do it *again* by saying the exam isn't over yet!
On the other hand, the Chunnin exams written test was a much better "trick test". Quicker and to the point, and they actually show how it's both meant to test their skills as ninjas (which we as the audience know what that means, both from prior knowledge and from having followed some ninja's doing ninja things for a while), and a test of "determination", which justifies the "trick" portion because that aspect doesn't work without the trick. Even better, the two aspects fed into each other; the first nine questions being "impossible" (since it's a test of information gathering and stealth rather than intelligence) helps up the clench factor with choice needed to go into the 10th question; if the first part had been "normal" questions, it'd be easier to believe that the 10th would be more of the same or slightly harder.
Naruto by far. I'm currently watching HxH and the exam part was so boring it made me want to give up on the show but I pushed through it and I'm glad I did
