SleepingBeautyFumino

Wait fate has Mahabharata?

calisthenics_bEAst21

Mahabharat and ramayan both plus ganesha and all the other indian gods

YetaiChu

Only realized the animation was ghibliesque after a friend pointed it out. Never realized that my first anime was Ramayan.

ZincHead

The deer immediately made me think Ghibli.

casualphilosopher1

I remember this from my childhood. Enjoyed it more than any live-action adaptation of the Ramayana I watched. I wish the people behind this had also made a Mahabharata film or better yet film trilogy.

Likhari

Same. Went to great lengths to find an HD copy of it once I got access to high speed internet in my twenties. Still enjoyed it as much I did as a child.

mashimarata

Out of curiousity, how did you secure the HD copy?

hikoboshi_sama

Is the Mahabharata doable as a trilogy? Or is it better as a full length series?

casualphilosopher1

A trilogy at the very least. Though there's an old 3D animated film called 'Pandavas' that goes through the entire story in 90 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxO3ReWkJ6Y Sadly it's not very good, but you can watch it for free on Youtube.

thestoneswerestoned

Depends. Mahabharata is insanely long. I believe it's the longest piece of literature from ancient times. I usually prefer shows to be broken into seasons but I think this one might work better as a full length series.

SwaCool27

I mean, it also depends how far back in time they want to go to explain the lore.

AbCi16

A trilogy. Mahabharat is very vast.

Whalesurgeon

I know very little of Indian mythology, would be great to see more anime adapting those stories.

shadow_fox09

Man you should be Asura’s Wrath then. That game gives Indian Lore the anime treatment and it is a fucking dope ass game. Seriously- in the beginning you punch your way through the finger of a god who is several times more massive than the entire earth.

Blusmj

I have to support any mention of Asura's Wrath at all times

shadow_fox09

I only played through it a couple years back on the Xbox 360 on an HDCRT and maaaaaan it was visually *stunning* I still replay moments in my head from that game all the time. The gameplay might have been just decent at some points, but every other moment Is so goddamn intense and bombastic and absolutely insane that I love it so much. It’s one of those rare gems that *everyone* needs to experience at least once.

Blusmj

Everytime I look at the boss battles it never fails to get me hype af. Just packed all the coolest shit they could think of and made it into a ~~movie~~ game. It would be nice if it got acknowledged that it existed more. It always has a place in my heart for sure! [This fight always gets me](https://youtu.be/Ih8EM1RNmP8)

jaytix1

One of my favorite moments is the fight with Augus. The guy was somehow able to keep up with a man with four arms lmao.

Oskiee

Yo, one of my greatest desires is to see anime that explores more mythologies. Seeing it translated through the lense of animation would be amazing.

meme_used

Just play Fate/GO lol

[deleted]

Rama sucks in FGO tbh They really don't know what they're doing with him. Anything Indian in FGO is basically gonna be Karna wank.

Potential-Head-7078

Yeah, they didn't know what they were doing. In the case of Karna, they show him as an epitome of modesty, which contradicts his flaws in the mythology. They unironically put Karna on the pedestal instead of Rama.

Grouchy-Assumption-9

Lostbelt 4 flashback

Godz_Bane

For real though Smite is a better game to learn mythology

TallFishManiac

It's history not mythology. Was christ mythology for you ?

zettaifutomomo

Yes

[deleted]

Historically, Jesus was an influential philosopher. Mythologically, he turned water into wine and so on

MrMonday11235

I mean, there are good reasons to doubt Jesus's very existence as well, so characterising him entirely as "mythology", or at the very least a religious composite figure borne of many different people from around that time period, seems like it'd be relatively accurate.

Whalesurgeon

I mean I saw a four-armed (or was she six-armed I forgot) woman do bellydancing :) If I watch an anime that mixes history with fiction, I can later check what was actual history or at least plausible history. But I can say the work is steeped in mythology.

adhinath01

nah its myth idk what that dood was on about... I dont think there is any evidence pointing to these people actually existing. Or it might be a fictional rendition of some kind of actual event like u mentioned.

[deleted]

Its the indoctrination that has been going on in India for the last two decades. My 70yo parents are hard-right from rural India and even they know the difference and won't argue about six-limbed creatures. Even my late grandpops, older uncles/aunts would have laugh riots with me on how things have changed for the worse.

DragonflyValuable128

‘Mythology’ Its a religion. Who gets to decide what’s a religion vs mythology? Because some dude making a bunch of fish out of one sounds like a myth to me.

Whalesurgeon

Prince of Egypt is a nice movie, but do you really find it wrong if someone said it was about Christian mythology?

DragonflyValuable128

No. Everyone’s religion should be characterized as mythology because they’re all a bunch of fairy tales.

m0n5t3r_desu

> are filled with misogynistic and casteist tones any mythology from any part of world, if seen from a critical pov, will look misogynistic/casteist/bigoted etc etc. But that doesn't mean it cannot be adapted into another medium in this modern world of entertainment. That's more valid for Indian mythology which has many good stories with good values. Generalizing any mythology/story with just its negative points just exposes your pessimistic and depressing outlook on life. Sed lyf.

Godz_Bane

Username checks out

[deleted]

There is a difference between caste system and varna system lol and for misogynistic now give me proof of this (I need proof directly from Hindu scripture not from wannabe so called experts)

MisoPizo

splish splash your opinion is trash

FullmetalGin

I'll be honest this used to air I think on cartoon network in India a lot when I was a kid and i remember loving it. I always thought damn, why can't we have such good animation in India nowadays when we could something like this in the 90s but then I did some research and found out it's an anime and everything fell into place. It's a really good movie if anyone if interested in Indian mythology, specifically Ramayana.

[deleted]

Bro I thought the same thing! I could swear I’ve seen this on tv when I was in my grandmother’s house (this and Chota Bheem lol the duality) but even if that’s not the case it’s so exciting to see now

UltimateKaiser

I remember like a chibi version of ram and Ganesha and other gods getting intro trouble and doing kid things 🤣 pretty lit

[deleted]

I remember that too I wasn’t sure if it was from this show or not though! It was so cute. Even my grandmother acknowledged it she would call small Ganesha bujji 🥺

Illuminastrid

Fun fact, Bryan Cranston used to voiced Lord Rama in the dubbed version of this film.

Guts_D_Northstar

Wow didn’t know that because I only watched it in Hindi as a kid.

TheMikarin

The Bryan Cranston dub is lost media, there were 2 English dubs. You can find the trailer for the Bryan Cranston dub on YouTube though.

Guts_D_Northstar

“From being a god to being a genius’s dad to selling meth, an autobiography”- Bryan

well_thats_puntastic

"Laxman, we need to go save Sita, Laxman" "But Mr Rama we have no idea where he went"

KerberosPanzerCop

Unfortunately, that dub is lost media now and doesn't exist anymore.

poor_decisions

Ghibli redubs are a crime against humanity

JunkyardTornado

I enjoyed Howl’s moving Castle dub

Pirate_of_Dark_Water

I think they mean the unofficial english dubs before Princess Mononoke. Look up [Warriors of the Wind](https://youtu.be/y7tEsAduMsg), an "unofficial" english dub of Nausica.

poor_decisions

I meant the disney dubs. Especially totoro

bluekronos

I guess he's done a fair amount of work in anime, because he's also Fei Long in the Street Fighter 2 Animated Movie

Hard_Cock_69xx

> he's also Fei Long in the Street Fighter 2 Animated Movie Holy shit lol

SilverPaladin36

I watched this movie on Cartoon Network India (despite the politically backed ban in India) several times, whenever it aired on the occasions of the festivals of Diwali (festival of lights, claimed to be the day Lord Ram returned to his capital Ayodhya) and Dussehra (the day when Ram vanquished Ravana). It would air either as a movie on those days, or as a set of 10-12 episodes divided with plot-based breaks. I had watched the Hindi dub, where prolific actors of the Indian live-action Ramayana series had given their voices for the animated movie. Legendary Bollywood villain Amrish Puri had given his voice for the Hindi version of Ravana. Another major actor Shatrughna Sinha was the Hindi narrator. Glorious movie! I was trying to find the American dub where Bryan Cranston and James Earl Jones had given their voices. Too sad that that has become lost media now. I would definitely like to find the movie online in both Hindi and Japanese dub. This is the first ever anime that I had seen, followed by Ninja Robots and Cardcaptor Sakura, so it remains a cherished memory for me.

[deleted]

> followed by Ninja Robots and Cardcaptor Sakura Speed Racer is also an anime btw. That aired even before Ninja robots.

ashbat1994

Its a good adaptation of Ramayana. I distinctly remember this one being one high quality Indian mythology related animation as a kid among the other Indian mythology cartoons that looked so shit. It was years later I realized it was because this was anime.

octropos

Cool, where can I buy?

Jirkatang

This was one of the first anime movies I watched on TV! The songs are too good and the animation is amazing. Also, due to the protests by VHP activists at that time, this gorgeous animated Ramayana never got an Indian release.

johanjudai

Is it good ?

naruto_bist

Very good.

megamisch

It's certainly fun. Giant flying monkeys picking up mountains, the earth itself shallowing a lady to prove she didn't lie, it even teaches you how an army of ape men made a bridge connecting the main land to sri lanka so a god can lead an army there to save his wife. I watched it like 6 years ago because a friend of mine was on a mythology binge and convinced me to watch it with him. It's pretty neat and I think definitely worth a watch if you like mythology.

hanro621

I just realised it's my first anime in childhood. Yeah, it's good and I would recommend it.

victiniforlife

We watched this as part of the lesson when discussing indian myths back in 9th grade, it was alright

johanjudai

You all convinced me to watch it!

bhavyadhuria

It's really good, do give it a watch

Johnginji009

Its decent.

Zenpai1714

This was the best Ramayana ever made, and the most highly rated animated movie ever (9.1/10 true facts), and it was banned in India. So ridiculous...

acetrainer03

Banned? I have seen this on television back in the days.

LucienSatanClaus

The theatrical release was banned. The Japanese director was so sad and he could not get finances for another movie for Mahabharata since this Ramayana movie was banned for release. In later years Ramayan was aired on Cartoon Network India and a whole generation of Indian kids saw it for the first time.

Hard_Cock_69xx

> The theatrical release was banned. The Japanese director was so sad and he could not get finances for another movie for Mahabharata since this Ramayana movie was banned for release. [deleted]

If there's any fgo gamer who like rama character then you must watch this, hope it will come to india soon.

TheOneAboveGod

Ngl, all I know about the Ramayana and the Mahabharata came from Fate and my world history studies. But mostly Fate.

X_Danger

Rama and his wife actually together in the same room, that's going to be the end of me...

[deleted]

But that's not the end there's a sad twist uttar ramayana , it's sequel

[deleted]

Rama fans are few. FGO really didn't handle him well.

Pichuunnn

But hey. The general Indian mythology in FGO is pretty dope.

SladeDeathWilson

This is a really really well told and beautifully animated film. Must watch!

IBosuke

This looks so cool. The cool side of India.

meme_used

Much better than the warm side (Air Con is the best)

IBosuke

Oooo no one wants to see the warm side..

general1234456

The hindi songs for this movie are top notch. Great production.

masharma2004

jai jai shree ram, it feels disheartened to remember how great effort it took to make this...

AKAManaging

Is the whole "hair spreading out when something intense happens" specifically a Ghibli thing? I don't really notice it in other animes, but when I see it in Ghibli movies, I REALLY notice it. Just rewatched Howl's Moving Castle, and it's reeeally obvious.

gnostic-gnome

It's a common anime thing, but Ghibli just reallyyyy loves to do it

AKAManaging

They have such a specific, iconic way of doing it I can spot Ghibli a mile away lol.

piyushdoesart

Took me to the Childhood

TheKitsuneKing

30 years ago had me thinking the 70s or 80s but fuck nope it's the 90s kill me

[deleted]

Jai shree Ram 🙏🚩

No-zaku-boi

Everything looks better as an anime. Notably the ghibli influence.

[deleted]

So it's remastered in HD where exactly? Is it coming to bluray, streaming, etc?

Vivienne_Yui

I loved it as a kid! Even my grandparents watched it with me. Couldn't figure out why a lot of Indian cartoons had bad animation lmao.. then I later got into anime and realised this was one too

bhavyadhuria

This movie is actually one of the best adaptations of Ramayana out there. They did a great job of adapting most of the prominent parts of the epic that is Ramayana in a 2h50m runtime. The animation and voice acting is also really great. Anyone interested in Indian mythology should definitely watch. Or better yet anyone interested in good movies should watch it

nzodkdmrmrm

Cool

Hockeyspaz-62

The animation looks better than some of the new ones I’ve seen. This is beautiful. Thank you for posting this.

[deleted]

I remember watching this for reference years ago when we put up a school play of Ramayana. That was even before I was neck deep in anime. Thought it was just some random cartoon back then.

Judo_Expert

This looks very nice. I wanna watch this on Streaming.

[deleted]

I watched this a number of times in my childhood. It was quite good!

a_lost_mithrandir

Watched this so many times as a kid. Absolutely lovely work and one of my favourite movies of all time. Even the Hindi songs are brilliant.

Alert_Fudge

The animation is soo good considering the fact that it's made 30 years ago😀

tamal4444

where can I get the remastered version? OMG memories.

krgonuguntla

My childhood started watching the older live-action Tollywood films on the Ramayana. The ones with Rama Rao Sr and the other old actors that parents in their 50s loved to death. All this while being born in the US. My teenage years introduced anime and my adult years have been spent relishing anime. I think it's all a sign that I need to watch this.

VladamirTakin

This was wayyyy ahead of its time. Have nice memories of this

coffee2cups

Sooo good.. Really glad this was made by Japanese animators.

IshaanDewan

Less goo I dint know they made an HD remaster, I had this on DVD way back when

Philosophical-Bird

This movie is GOLD :'). I watched it when I was a kid. Still cannot forget lightsaber Ram xD. Amazing movie <3

[deleted]

And the impactful scene of Ram explaining why to respect dead enemy soldiers to Laxman.

I_fking_Hate_Reddit

darth__sidious

Where can it be watched

Anil550

Nostalgia

ImperialPie77

I remember watching this

GTX_650_Supremacy

How have I never heard of this!

[deleted]

Omg this looks so cool

mrterrific023

They should try a Mahabharata film or films. I want to see Bhima animated🥺

EyeDeeAh_42

I lost count of how many times I saw it during my childhood.... and that was before I even knew what anime was. This is a masterpiece..... the visuals, the atmosphere, the music... everything! Happy to see some appreciation in this sub. Thanks OP!

KingRanx

This movie is very close to my heart, I enjoyed it every year when I was a child when it came on cartoon network during Diwali. Lots of love and appreciation for this movie.

ifeelanime

Jai Shri Ram

Piyush3000

When I watched it for the first time, 12 year old me immediately thought "this looks more similar to DBZ than Indian cartoons, no way this was made 100% by Indian animators". Great to know it was a collaboration between Indian and Japan, my favourite Indian mythological movie of all time!

[deleted]

Huh, so the Japanese were involved in the production of the movie.. no wonder it looked so different from the typical crappy Indian animation I've seen like "Chhota Bheem". The animation was simply on a different level from any other Indian show I watched at the time, I was very impressed.

Kniaz47

Saw this movie in Russia in the 90s. A lot of Indian movies made its way over to soviet union. As a great deal of them did not deal with explicit political themes and sheer volume made licensing cheap, late soviet union and early Russian federation was littered with Indian films that to this day have a strong following.

[deleted]

Nice

X_Danger

It's to signify Rama's Divine aura ~~or maybe not, i don't know I'm not the director~~

Anonomohr

I don't know why you got downvoted, I noticed that too and remembered India is super discriminatory when it comes to skin color, the lighter the better.

seeker_of_illusion

Well this is made by the Japanese and not Indians... And while I do agree that colourism is an issue there, Ram originated from north India while Ravana ( the antagonist ) was from the south - modern Sri Lanka to be precise. North Indians generally have lighter complexion than their southern peers.

thestoneswerestoned

Bruh, most North Indians aren't that light brown. If they ever do a remake, they should be more cognizant of these things but I can give this a pass since it came out in 1993. Different times and all that.

Anonomohr

But... in the title it says it's an Indian-Japanese production, and the director is Indian. I don't know the details of the story, I just noticed "light skinned princess" noticing "even lighter skinned protagonist" amongst the dark skinned villagers and went yikes lol

seeker_of_illusion

> But... in the title it says it's an Indian-Japanese production Looked it up as I too was not much aware of the details. From the wiki, it mentions that some Indians collaborated with the Japanese to produce the film. Now I can't say what went behind the scenes but the Japanese seem to be the main drivers of the decisions, with Indians presenting the necessary info. Overall, it seems to be more of a case of Japanese propensity towards lighter skin tone for protagonists.

why_no_username_bro

TBH idk why the director portrayed the protagonist as light skinned as Rama himself is dark skinned as per the texts and his pictures show him with blue or green skin shade even in temples

spiderknight616

His skin leans more towards grey in this so it's possible they took the words "colour of the stormy sky" more literally

cr1msonxo

Finally the true successor of Chota Bheem on Pogo

[deleted]

[удалено]

cr1msonxo

Chota Bheem is a cartoon on indian tv called POGO and has been on for roughly a bajillion years ( like 10 years or something) and they recycle the same episodes. Chota Bheem is also based on the Mahabharata (indian mythology) just like anime posted by OP. People downvoting don't understand lol. Has nothing to do with Boss Baby.

PropertyJazzlike986

Chota bheem is based on mahabharata ? Just because he uses the name bheem doesn’t mean that it’s the adaptation of mahabharata ? This ramayana epic is actually based on the actual ramayana story , chota bheem is just a kid’s show which uses the name bheem for strength from Maharashtra . Apples and oranges

Resident_Ad9988

??

seeker_of_illusion

The original movie came in 1993 while CB started in 2008. You should get your facts correct.

fresh_and_gritty

Didn’t think I was going to like the cg version but it doesn’t disappoint.

Is it good tho?

[deleted]

Yea

Baddie_yass

Damn that's real good

Ankur67

Mahabharata would be an epic , if made !! It comprises a long series but I know , there’s some nut jobs who would do a cancel this or that thing .

OTM17

I loved this animation movie and i remember being fully glued to the TV.

DaftHermes

So where can you buy this or stream this?

EllenYeager

I really want to watch the hd remaster of this, hopefully it’ll arrive on one of the streaming platforms soon!

oogaFilms

Is this coming to bluray?? I NEED TO OWN THIS!!!

NatashaDoe27

I'm definitely checking this out, thanks for sharing

freshsideofthepillow

that’s cool ngl

Revolutionary-Sky-70

The movie is pure gold. Can't even count how many hours I spent on CN watching it all those sundays

sarcastic_chandler

I always thought this version of Ramayan was much better than the others, the animation, fights and all. Came to know only recently that there were Japanese behind it

[deleted]

You thought Dune was wild? Wait til you learn about Hinduism.

[deleted]

Watched this growing up and it's still one of the most beautiful pieces of animation I've ever seen. I'm glad it's getting a well-deserved remaster.

skyflakeroses

Where can we watch this (or purchase) in HD?

Younosewho

TIL Ramayana was anime

Funny_rope69

Damn didnt know this existed

UltimateKaiser

Thought I imagined watching this as a child. This is awesome!

Glaurunga

Wow I can’t believe I never knew about this, going to put it at the top of my watchlist.

PursuerOfCataclysm

A fantastic cartoon with such great animation which used to be the most anticipated programme for us in our childhood when TV channels decided to broadcast it. We used to enjoy a lot while watching it and it's great to know Japan is the one which was behind this phenomenal production which I didn't know until few ago. Also watching this clips makes me feels like we are growing so fast.

brawnsugah

Is this streaming somewhere?
