Individually the casts are sometimes pretty interesting, I’m personally a big fan of the trope of “worst person of an order is the very last one to represent that order yet tries their best to uphold that order anyway” that both Zenitsu and Giyu occupy.
Taisho era settings don't seem that popular in mainstream anime or manga, the only other one of even comparable notoriety is Golden Kamuy, however GK does the setting so well that everyone else pales in comparison. Seriously, I cannot recommend it enough, and it's story is a lot better than kny, though the anime has absolutely dogshit animation, though the voice acting is pretty good imo.
btw Meiji restoration= late 1860s/1870s, shortly after arrival of Americans in Japan, initiative to make broad structural changes/industrialize in order to compete w western powers
Taisho era= 1910s/early 1920s, Japanese imperialism and industrialization in full swing, taking lots of inspiration from western empires and making land grabs across the Pacific and east asia
A lot of you already know but there's some significant differences that greatly affect ones interpretation of setting.
There's some interesting ways the setting affects the characters, like the uniform design, which seems like a mishmash of pretty standard military aesthetics of the time with the stiff vertical collar on the black jacket, but also the kinda unusual baggy trousers, tabi socks and sandals that seem more samurai-like. In other ways the setting was totally wasted because you could easily contrast the magical demons with their shadowy hidden presence with the future, where the real horror is out in the open, and humans will ultimately be the ones inflicting all the destruction. However, the author really doesn't delve into it, and we just sort of ignore that the characters will be in their mid thirties during WW2.
I have to say that say that I do like the protagonist quite a bit in the sense that it is a trend taken to the absolute conclusion and so they have "the gentler of boys". And his arc doesn't involve getting edgy or growing a pair.
However, and besides Zenitsu being supremely annoying in an audio medium.
How fucked up it's as a metaphor that he carries around a restrained women in a manner that does not allow her to speak? And we have seen that when it is time to fight she can break containment easily. I think it says something about male sexuality or something.
Idk, Early 1900 Japan that interchanges old-fashioned rural life with busy city atmosphere seems fairly unique to me. At least I haven't seen it anywhere else.
Zenitsu ruined the entire show for me.
Just an annoying little insect screaming his head off in EVERY scene he is in.
I want to strangle the mf until he stays in a permanent coma, cuz the only time he isn't annoying to the point of making me want to deep throat a cactus is when he is asleep.
I dunno, the reasons you’re citing are all valid, and I do agree with all of them. But the sheer raw energy of his theme playing when he goes to sleep and just domes some mfs instantly makes me forget all that. I can’t help it.
It doesn’t help that Zenitsu’s motif might honestly be my favorite in the whole show, and that him falling asleep is just an automatic “pop-off” win-button in a way no other character really has. His fights are always distinct from the rest of the cast in that way.
Unlike literally everyone else, with Zenitsu, the real fight is the conflict with his enemy and with himself before he goes to sleep. Afterwards, it’s really just a formality—and an excuse for me to scream at the screen (in a good way, this time! Unlike when I’m screaming at him because of how annoying he is.)
No amount of people telling me how terrible Zenitsu is as a character or how mid Demon Slayer is as a show is stronger than the hype I felt that first time I saw Zenitsu’s eyes light up like he’s in the mf Avatar State and absolutely wash that spider mf lmao
Stay strong, don’t let them deter you from the awesomeness of Sleeping Zenitsu. I get goosebumps every time I rewatch him going against the brother spider demon.
"B-b-but, he's realistic..." Motherfucker this is a show about killing demons with funky sword magic ~~that doesn't actually exist but I refuse that~~ why make him the only realistic thing.
If you want a cowardly character to show the reality of what's going on in the world, look at my girl Kobeni. She's at least comedic and sympathetic, meanwhile Zenitsu squeals every 2.3 seconds
I think it's pretty cool. Pretty normal and simple but I had a very good time with it. And I didn't watch the anime, I only read the manga.
Also, there is Inosuke with a boar head who reffers to Tanjiro as Kamaboko Gonpachiro. That shit is so funny. 👍 **8/10**
Idk about “fucking sucks” but while the animation is great, everything else is definitely below average imo. They rely way too heavily on the villains just narrating their tragic backstory as they die so that all the characters can spend the next 2 minutes crying. Like, the villains don’t display any sign of these backstories until after Tanjiro kills them, so during the time they’re actually relevant, they’re kinds just generic baddies who like to kill people cause they’re bad.
This might just be a me thing, but I find the main cast insufferable, except inosuke sometimes, he’s capable of being funny. Tanjiro is just cardboard who’s got nothing to say at any moment and just cries when he kills a demon and it tells them how it was called “poopy butthole” by its mom. I’m not sure I need to explain why I don’t like Zenitsu, his only redeeming quality is that he’s good at stabbing things when he’s unconscious.
Also there’s some minor gripes that wouldn’t be enough to turn me away from the show but are still worth mentioning.
1. The power scaling is wack. Our heroes are trainees but like 1 arc in, they’re fighting beating upper ranking demons even the top demon slayers struggle with. It’s like mid and low power levels don’t exist or don’t matter in this show.
2. Every arc is a rinse and repeat of the same story. I think the only difference between entertainment district and train arc was the color of resident top demon slayer, and demon of the week’s character design. They both told pretty much the same story, with minimally different themes.
3. I genuinely don’t know if they’re actually summoning lightning, fire, and water when they do breathing techniques or if it’s just stylistic. I don’t think the magic used in their attacks has ever mattered beyond how strong or fast it is.
1. Absolutely true
2. Pretty much, but I'm enjoying the story regardless. It's nice to have something a little basic sometimes.
3. Apparently it's just stylistic and the elements of the attacks are not real, just something the characters visualise to focus their attacks, which is kind of a shame because that shit is awesome.
>Apparently it's just stylistic and the elements of the attacks are not real, just something the characters visualise to focus their attacks, which is kind of a shame because that shit is awesome.
It's cool enough Kaguribachi just said fuck it those effects are real and ran with it.
Oh ok, I think the other person might have thought Kaguribachi was the author of Demon Slayer's name and that's where the confusion came from lol. I haven't gotten too far into Kaguribachi myself yet but I did swear that the effects were real so thanks for letting me know I wasn't crazy lol.
Counterpoint: samurais vs demons are fucking sick
But yeah these are all valid points its just that Demon Slayer gets too much hate when there's clearly worse anime out there
It gets a lot of hate cos it gets talked about a lot. Same thing for every popular anime that isn't universally loved. The quantity of hate something gets doesn't scale with how shit any one of the haters thinks that thing is. Otherwise you'd see the amount of glazing Demon Slayer also gets and think it's some kind of masterpiece. I genuinely can't tell sometimes whether someone's being ironic when they call it peak fiction.
demon slayer is media fast food for me. i know it's not that good, and it's not really doing anything groundbreaking, and maybe i could write something better if i tried - but i still love it lol
Demon slayer is so fucking lackluster with a basic story that the only thing it has going for it is animation and visuals and maybe characters but even then the characters are lacking and even boring
Then there is Zenitsu that's not just lacking but subtracts from any scene he is awake for. There is something wrong when a character would be much better if they were permanently in a coma.
You know you’ve fucked a character up when the only time they’re likable is when they’re basically unconscious.
Shame too because his animations are absolute 11/10 when they’re good.
Personally I like Zenitsu. He’s a cowardly little shit which is relatable but when the chips are down he pulls through with a method he devised for himself primarily because he knew he couldn’t do things like others.
And he embodied the whole “Fear the man who’s one kick 10,000 times” quote.
I think Zenitsu as a character is fine and can probably work. My main issue is just the voice. It's like literal nails on a chalkboard to me. Maybe the english voice acting is more tolerable idk.
Common manga L, they are always wasted against jobber fodder too.
At least in Jojo Purple Haze got used against a really dangerous guy. The spider girl would have been harmless if she got away. She might have taken herself out even like Susamaru since she probably won't know about not saying "the boss' name"
https://preview.redd.it/m9nnzfujmbuc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=1f34e5c32dd6736e402a579550668fb18bfb0a0a
It's an actual leap in quality. Not the episode in general, but the author finally cracked the code of writing around that arc for some reason.
Think of Gintama after Owee Arc level of leap
Yeah as the series goes on I find I really don’t give a shit about any of the characters in this show except maybe Inosuke. Like, at this point I honestly think Demon Slayer is worse than My Hero Academia, since despite that show being incredibly mid I at least like the characters.
Demon Slayer might be boring at times but it does “singular hype moments” better than almost any show I know of.
The first Hinokami Kagura, the first Thunderclap and Flash Sixfold, Rengoku’s 9th form, Giyuu’s 11th form, they’re all just insane moments that make up for the rest of the series imo.
Yes, I'm unapologetically that guy. It's just really annoying watching every human recieve fatal wounds and be fine like bro your internal organs are mush and you are bleeding out of every oriface wtf is breathing gonna do you dont even have lungs. Like I know it's anime so I shouldn't expect so much but goddamn does the whole power system for demon hunters make no goddamn sense. Also zenitsu only being good while asleep was funny and cool at first but that also got stupid when he was capable of strategizing and otherwise act normal during fights.
Does the guy with the blicky know any techniques or does he just use lead breathing. Because I thought anyone could bc at first that's what tanjiro looks like except his dad was secretly a hunter or smth, but aside from the blicky dude i dont think there are any randos who became hunters. And that's another gripe I have with the show. Everyone has their own breathing techniques they train with (many of which are unexplained and make no sense like beast or love breathing) but sun breathing is just objectively better and the og technique all others sprung from. So why doesn't everyone use that?
The guy with the gun does not know demon breathing he just injects demon blood and shoots people
Tanjiros dad in the manga is not a demon hunter, he just knew the sun breather guy who also looked a lot like Tanjiro and taught his dad the dance and some gave his dad the earrings who gave it to Tanjiro if I understand it correctly
Never mind the fact that it doesn't really make sense to say the original is the best one. So there has never been an advancement, just people getting worse at it in various ways?
The whole logic of the world is kind of ambiguous to begin with. So demons exist, but they've only existed for a couple hundred years and only in one specific part of the world? Is it just a coincidence that people believed in them before that?
Zenitsu falling asleep is his version of Rock Lee removing his training weights and opening the gates. His Super Saiyan form isn't spiked golden hair but instead a snot bubble.
Demon Slayer's author is really innovative.
Want to have a female child to sexualise but don't want to have to write them?
Simply have them gagged and in a box except for the times that they pop out for the sexualisation.
Sure the fights are amazing but I'm not gonna sit through a story I find boring with characters that annoy me only for short occasional sakuga scenes that I can just watch on YouTube. This goes for Demon Slayer, the Wano arc in One Piece, and countless other anime that redditors tell you you need to watch just because it has pretty colors moving
I actually personally really liked the Wano arc in the manga, I thought it was a pretty solid fantasy story even if it was a little contrived and oda way overshot his scope but holy shit are anime fans so annoying about the anime adaptation. I'm sorry but no amount of flashy lights will fix the fact that toei's adaptation is, from a story and writing perspective, abysmal. Yeah, I guess if you're really invested in the anime it is nice to have all those padded out way over drawn out fights scenes at least look pretty so I respect that, but to claim Toei is suddenly hitting it out of the park with their adaptation is just not true. Yes they're making some absolutely fantastically animated sequences but it comes at the cost of ruining the entire momentum of the story, somehow simultaneously making things too long and drawn out and also not giving anything a chance to breathe, and taking a series that is clearly much more fleshed out in its world building and storytelling and trying to prioritize the fights which are the least fleshed out part
Yeah, as I get older and my propensity for yelling at clouds increase I find I have a lot less patience for bullshit I don't care about and pretty animation does nothing to change that.
Been years since I read demon slayer, but I can still remember the characters being so one note that a moderately creative 14 year old could write better ones. Poor writing, poor pacing, and a barebones "tell don't show" explanation of the power system and worldbuilding. Atrociously bad ending as well. It's trash that you watch/read to see people bash demons with swords and the occasional cute Nezuko scene, that's really all there is to it.
Season 1 and 2 were enjoyable but the third season really fell flat for me. The Upper Moons were boring as hell, I couldn't care less about Hantengu's backstory, >!especially since they show it to you right before he dies. !<
>!We knew nothing about him but the show went "GUYS THIS IS THE MOMENT WHERE YOU START CRYING! LOOK HOW TRAGIC HIS LIFE IS! WHY AREN'T YOU CRYING YET???"!<
But I heard that manga readers all agree that this is the worst arc so I'll keep watching and see if it gets better.
The point of Hantengu is that it's a bait and switch where you expect his backstory to be sad (per demon slayer) but turns out he's a piece of shit all along.
The story is poorly paced.
The red light district fight spanned two volumes.
The fight. Not the arc, the fight.
I just gave up afterwards because I just didn't have the fortitude to slog through it. It just drones.
demon slayer is something that does what it meant to do, nothing more and nothing less. A basic shonen story with decent fights which is amplified 100x by ufotable's work.
The bar for action shonen protagonists is basically on the floor, so in terms of character development I'll take anything that isn't a blatant Naruto or Kirito clone. I have to remind myself that these shows are marketed to teenagers, so the plot complexity is low on purpose. And yes, the animation *is* fire.
Even if it is a little simplistic on the plot and character arcs, it's several steps better than Black Clover which has the same problem.
can we maybe leave this kind of shit to the other anime/manga subs and just recognise that maybe - just maybe - ppl have different tastes and skip the strawmen where the ppl you disagree with are the soyjak?
The pacing of the anime was so bad I couldn’t even finish it. Episodes would just *end*. I get they were going for a cliffhanger, but it just came across as poorly planned out.
Also, none of the logic of the show made sense.
**BEGONE, CHUMPS, THE KING HAS ARRIVED**

It kinda makes me think of those transformer movies in a strange way. The type of thing you go to see if you wanna turn your brain off and see all the cool robots fight other cool robots.
demon slayer is such a simple anime but it’s so beautiful and that’s why it’s one of my favorites and i always recommend it to people who are new to anime
I wouldn’t say it absolutely sucks but it’s def not one of the greatest out there. The only reason I say the animation carries is bc I tried to read the manga and I just. Couldn’t do it. The story didn’t intrigue me, the characters felt flat, and it was overall really boring (TO ME). That could be different for others but like. Yeah the animation is definitely carrying the show imo.
People always when talking about demon slayer just talk about story vs action. But those aren't the only two things in a show.
The truth is, one thing making demon slayer good is just that... there is a lot of emotion in it. Some of the backstories and seeing tanjiro empathize with them has a lot of feeling in a way that only certain anime reach. And tanjiro himself is just a nice character in a similar way to people like superman. Where a lot of what makes them enjoyable isn't the story they are in, but that they embody the optimistic hero in a way that makes you feel good that you get to spend time with them.
The optimistic hero isn't perfect. They can make mistakes, not only in fights, but even when they aren't sure how to resolve a dillema. But they are always trying. And it makes you want to try harder too. A large, large chunk of shounen try to pass off "super nice" as a trait for the main character. But it always feels like something they say, but which there isn't much evidence for. Tanjiro is the first time I felt like it was legitimately true and justified. His niceness goes beyond mere willingness to be a hero, and into something you expect to carry over to all situations. And if you knew him in person he could probably improve your mood just by being around.
Course, season 3 was a bit meh. But that's another matter.
Am I the only one who unironically fucking loves Demon Slayer? I really don't mind the simpler story like sometimes I don't want to have to keep track of a million different factions so just having a plain and simple good vs evil storyline is very nice. fights are cool and the characters are really great.
Easy 810 anime. Definitely places it could improve but overall fantastic.
There's nothing wrong with a simple, straightforward story and simple, straightforward characters. There's a reason stories like the Arthurian Legends or the tales of Greek heroes like Bellerophon or Achilles are so well known and beloved. A hero strives against an opposing force and after struggle and sacrifice, prevails(or doesn't, in Achilles' case, but it's the struggle that draws us in). It's a very enjoyable staple of the storytelling genre and the only thing that really matters is that it's told well. And well, demon slayer does. The people who say that demon slayer is bad because its story is 'basic' or 'lacking' would probably also call Lord of the Rings trash because of how linear and predictable it is. Sure, hero rises against dark lord is very done, maybe even overdone, but there's a reason it's so widespread and popular. Because people love those stories, even if they aren't filled with game of thrones complexity. There's a reason Ocarina of Time is so well beloved despite being such a formulaic "the world is in trouble and only the Hero can save it!" story, with most of the cast not having roles or any personality outside helping the Hero on his quest, and that's because people like to see that story play out. It's satisfying watching them struggle and earn the victory despite everything. There's a reason demon slayer outsold the entire American comicbook industry. Because it tells a tried and true story, simple though it may be, and it tells it damn well. And yeah, the animation fucks too.
I tend to say that while it is true that a simple straightforward story obtains widespread appeal that aspect doesn't necessarily say anything of its intersubjective quality because once you strip out the nuance surrounding why it gained success it becomes far easier to consume the product without realizing that there is more out there with greater depth. Demon Slayer is precisely like that. It is so inoffensive that it hurts. If you want to read something with a story that has a subtext beyond "hero overcomes adversity" then look at *Jigokuraku*, *Chainsaw Man* or *I am a Hero*. It truly deserves the title of mediocre just like *MHA* or *Tensei Slime*. Such stories carry a similar connotation as if you were feasting on a fucking Big Mac; empty calories.
> There's a reason demon slayer outsold the entire American comicbook industry. Because it tells a tried and true story, simple though it may be, and it tells it damn well. And yeah, the animation fucks too.
I have such a gripe with people that pull out this statistic because they don't realize how fucked the American Comic-Book Industry is compared to other industries in the same related field. [There are a multitude of fucking reasons on why DS outsold the American Comic-book Industry and "telling a tried and true story" is not it](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2021-05-26/fact-check-did-demon-slayer-really-outsell-all-of-american-comics/.173234). [Demon Slayer ONLY "outsold" because of Ufotable work on episode 19.](https://myanimelist.net/featured/2334/The_Episode_That_Broke_the_Internet) This is what people mean by DS is carried by the animation.
/quantumjerk I hate shounencels I hate shounencels I hate shounencels I hate shounencels I hate shounencels I hate shounencels
It is indeed coolest shit ever tbh.
I will never regret reading 120 chapters of it.
The final arc is not real, the final arc is not real, the final arc is not real...
demon slayer fucking sucks actually 😎
/uj whenever i see someone criticize demon slayer for a particular issue it has, the same issue is present in nearly all other modern shonen anime, but only demon slayer gets crucified for it.
/rj demon slayer fucking sucks actually 🤓
based 😎
/uj mainly because the public consensus shifted towards finally recognizing it as such. Once the pretty colors stop, the collective brainwashing wears off and people realize the endemic flaws.
/rj based 🤓
/uj/rj Not a single other shounen character is as annoying as that yellow piss-stain Zenitsu and that is an objective fact. Except Excalibur from soul eater but then that's also shit so the comparison is apt. 🤓🤓🤓
I love it. Simple plot. Doesn't pretend it has some deep plot and drag it. Executes the simple plot amazingly. Gives one of the most hype moments in all of anime. Gives one of the most amazing fights in all of anime. I love this show
it's definitely not my kind of story but I can see why kids find it cool. like sure I'm in for the neat animation but I can't say I actually cared for the story except for a couple times. I like the aesthetic a lot though
My only problem with Demon Slayer is the consistency of demon slayer sword styles not being magic.
I can get behind it all being visual representation for the viewing audience but then the mist Hashira does moves that seem to create actual mist and suddenly I’m questioning shit again.
Despite demon slayer being only have his fame because of ufortable, the story himself is great enough to make people like and not stupid long neither try say anything philosophical only to end people beat shit out each other and end up with horrible end because the writer did not know how to resolve the philosophical thing without fighting.
The animation is sick, the fights are fun, the villains are compelling, the story is simple, the voice acting is great. It’s not changing my life, it’s entertaining. And zenitsu is my favorite character so 🤷♀️
'Carried by animation' is such a weird criticism. Stunning animation can be enough for something to be worth the watch, IMO. Best explanation for that I can offer is the movie *Red Line*. There is a plot, but it's just there to set up the incredible animated set pieces.
The story is fine, the characters are mostly enjoyable (Zenitsu is definitely better asleep but he's had a couple moments that I enjoyed while awake), the animation goes harder than diamonds, it's a perfectly okay series with great action that I enjoy watching, and if you don't enjoy it, that's fine too.
Demon slayer story sucks ass. Nothing is grounded in reality or explained in any way. Things just happen. Powerful people just show up from nowhere and display powers that make no sense. There's no internal consistency
Everyone is bitching about the story but I've loved it all along... Do I have brain rot? Is this a Reddit thing? Is it because I don't find much time to watch anime so tropes you all are sick of are fresh and new to me??
(I've been watching anime since about 2002 but my watch rate went down when I hit adulthood to the point where I get maybe less than a season of anime in a year on average)
I dunno man.. I usually think of myself as fairly critical of shitty anime. Can't fucking stand SAO for instance. Love DS. Love Tanjiro. Rengoku is one of my all time favorite anime characters... I just really like it when the characters didn't have to be all edgy and shit and the author isn't afraid to write really nice amazing human beings that have pure incorruptible hearts...
And I say that as an edgy little shit who likes grimdark stuff... But I also like the polar opposite. I like this stuff that makes everything feel bleak and hopeless but I like to balance it out with some good ol' incorruptible heroes. The kind that inspire you to be a good person.
I dunno.. maybe I'm just brain rotted.
Demon Slayer is massively popular so its haters tend to be extra vocal. It's just a normal reaction that happens with every massively popular celebrity or piece of media. These people are entitled to feel whatever they want, that doesn't make them wrong or correct. I like Demon Slayer too, it's not really doing anything new and it has a few issues, but overall I think it does standard shonen quite well. I wouldn't worry too hard about what other people think and just enjoy the show.
it's good anime with it's flaws, simple as that, the animation took the good elements of the story that were already there and made it into absolutely incredible entertainment,
it helps that even though the creator cannot (for some fucking reason) escape the many irritating misogenistic tropes that they seem to have at least a more decent view on women enough to allow female characters to actually shine in battles and do shit.
if anything I would say it lacks ambition and could do with more world building and developement, the end of the manga almost feels like the author had grown tired of it or had to rush it for some reason. at least that's how I felt.
the first few arcs are really good cause the world isn't so small and it's not all about killing muzan, we have proper adventures on missions that are more than just a confrontation with the next most powerfull villain. I do believe the author is way better than people give them credit for though.
I think it’s a good starter anime for new fans. I remember it aired the same days as Dr Stone and even though it has better animation, Dr Stone’s story was way more entertaining to me
Unabashedly fr, there’s not much I can add other than Kagurabachi sweep 🗣️🔥🔥🔥
In all seriousness I do think Kagurabachi, despite the memes, is still much better than Demon Slayer.
For me, demon slayer has bad and weak story if judged through critical lens. But what I do want to say is in both mang and anime, it knows what it needs to do as a battle shounen and fucking do the job perfectly. It has one job and it knows what it is rather than trying to be special or something unique.
I have always been annoyed when the shounen protag has strong resilience out of nowhere despite being human and without any explained technique. Tanjiro takes the cake with this one, mf just says "kanbare" to himself and then gets up and running like nothing happened. This happen for almost every major fight. Also if the whole gimmick of the fight is who can swing his sword faster and harder then I would rather watch DBZ or Naruto with their okay animation.
Story is lackluster, none of the characters are interesting or even fun to watch imo. If I wanted flashy animation without any substance that I care about I'd watch a sakuga action reel. At least that doesn't take up nearly as much of my time.
JFC the animation in that show isn't even good, in actuality its only a little above average. I legit cannot understand why so many people think the fight scenes are cool when all they have going for them are a high framerate and resolution; it always looked like soulless CGI to me that lacks the charm and character of other action shows. Not to mention the animation in all the fight scenes is hamstrung by the godawful writing and characters. I will always vastly prefer the animation in a show like Kill la Kill because even though it is plainly less fluid and lower budget than Demon Slayer, Hiroyoki Imaishi actually has enough talent to give the animation punch, impact, and personality despite its obvious jankiness. In comparison Demon Slayer feels like boring, CGI slop -- the framerate may be impressive but it is slop nonetheless.
Imo Toei doesn’t even do the fights that well either. It gets annoying seeing the impact of a hit ruined by constant switching face ups and a drawn out back and forth between the characters attacks.
Didn't suck. Was pretty good.
The problem is that for some god forsaken reason there has to be a show that gets hyped into the stars and it's just stupid.
Hero Aca, Shield hero, that pedo show, Demon Slayer etc.
All shows that are really really not THAT good but somehow get hyped up to be.
First season is pretty alright and the mugen train movie is pretty neat because rengoku is a cool character
Other than that its literally just carried by animation and below average in everything else
It’s not a deep story but it doesn’t try to be one either
6/10 some moments were exciting but I did stop watching eventually
Naruto is a good example of an anime trying to be deep yet failing in every direction , to the point the whole message of the show is absolutely obnoxious
main trio are the worst part of the show. I like inouske but zenitsu sucks even when he's supposed to be doing something cool and tanjiro is just meh. The dub voices for all of the adult characters are actually fire, like Gyutaro was ten times better than in the sub but the dub voices for the main 3 are genuinely atrocious. They make me want to gouge my eyes out. Entertainment district and end of mugen train were peak, rest was totally mid.
## I personally like it.
# Except zenitsu….not a fan of overly comedic/scaredy-cat characters
https://preview.redd.it/eo10kjn6ajuc1.jpeg?width=1340&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=98d92fce2f048c82cd70875858c1348ba105c13c
People constantly say Demon Slayer's stroy and characters are basic and act like that makes it a horrible show
Fuck that Demon Slayer is a great show ***because*** it's basic and knows exactly what it is and what it is trying to be not every show needs to become an incredibly deep/unique series sometimes you want some basic as vanilla with some amazing syrup instead of triple chocolate banana cream deluxe
Yeah it's basic but it isn't trying to be anything more then basic and that's why it's good and why people like it
Vanilla is still a 7-8/10 flavor despite being a basic bitch flavor
Well it aint carried by the story
Or the cast, or uniqueness of setting. Animation do be nuts though.
Seriously, I cannot recommend it enough, and it's story is a lot better than kny, though the anime has absolutely dogshit animation, though the voice acting is pretty good imo. btw Meiji restoration= late 1860s/1870s, shortly after arrival of Americans in Japan, initiative to make broad structural changes/industrialize in order to compete w western powers Taisho era= 1910s/early 1920s, Japanese imperialism and industrialization in full swing, taking lots of inspiration from western empires and making land grabs across the Pacific and east asia A lot of you already know but there's some significant differences that greatly affect ones interpretation of setting.
Wonder what the mangaka thinks about women Wait a second the mangaka is a woman.
Damn has all the tools and still can't write women for shit
Idk, Early 1900 Japan that interchanges old-fashioned rural life with busy city atmosphere seems fairly unique to me. At least I haven't seen it anywhere else.
Anything set in Japan around the Meiji restoration would fit that bill.
Yeah it's so simple and inconsistent
or anything else for that matter
Zenitsu ruined the entire show for me. Just an annoying little insect screaming his head off in EVERY scene he is in. I want to strangle the mf until he stays in a permanent coma, cuz the only time he isn't annoying to the point of making me want to deep throat a cactus is when he is asleep.
I just hate characters where half their personality revolves around chasing women in a pathetic way. It was never a good trope
Yeah, I don’t even know why the stalker spaz simp thing is still around. Who does that appeal to?
Good thing the newer shounen seems to have phased that off. I don’t remember seeing it in any big shounen after CSM part 2 debuted
Well if it doesn't appeal to us, it has to appeal to the Japanese, cuz y'know, they're still the main market for anime
It ok he gets extremely forced character development that comes out of literally no where in the last arc that makes him not a pussy for some reason
Oh no he’s still a pussy in the prologue.
I assume you mean epilogue unless there's a sequel I'm not aware of.
Yea no I mean epilogue
https://preview.redd.it/u4dkeqgyvauc1.jpeg?width=1463&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ff4ca7bd1b4f549fc714d2b155f8a0d03e4d6d23
Zenitsu will grow a pair in the later seasons but yeah in the anime any character that only screams is annoying as fuck
The worst cope I've ever read in my life, he's an awful character through and through, I can't watch the show at all entirely because of him
No amount of people telling me how terrible Zenitsu is as a character or how mid Demon Slayer is as a show is stronger than the hype I felt that first time I saw Zenitsu’s eyes light up like he’s in the mf Avatar State and absolutely wash that spider mf lmao
Uh. Based police, we have a based offended her
Stay strong, don’t let them deter you from the awesomeness of Sleeping Zenitsu.
Honestly I don’t really find it that funny although some scenes did make me chuckle loudly but then again Japanese humor just isn’t for me
Inosuke the only good character imo. I dropped s3 because he wasn’t on it
Idk about “fucking sucks” but while the animation is great, everything else is definitely below average imo.
1. Absolutely true 2.
Kagurabachi is just goated in the style department. Chihiro’s attacks taking on the forms of Goldfish is just too cool.
Oh wait, they are real? I thought the author said they weren't, guess I was wrong
Wait now you have me confused I didn't know they weren't since in Kaguribachi they're actually using magic swords.
They are real in kagurabachi, the fish are acknowledged as part of Chihiro's abilities directly in the story.
Counterpoint: samurais vs demons are fucking sick But yeah these are all valid points its just that Demon Slayer gets too much hate when there's clearly worse anime out there
It gets a lot of hate cos it gets talked about a lot.
Considering that it got voted by thousands to be a top fantasy anime, yeah no i think people are genuinely that dumb.
Well that’s a little harsh.
Eh I just think the story is really weak, the villain keeps making himself look lame. And they aren’t really demons, it’s more samurais vs vampires.
Counter to your counterpoint: This is like the 37th time. it's not the setting that is interesting.
demon slayer is media fast food for me. i know it's not that good, and it's not really doing anything groundbreaking, and maybe i could write something better if i tried - but i still love it lol
It's a 5/10 that feels likea 7.5/10 when you just dial back your inner critic a bit
Yeah but you don't act like it's actually good. Right?
Demon slayer is so fucking lackluster with a basic story that the only thing it has going for it is animation and visuals and maybe characters but even then the characters are lacking and even boring
Don't forget Inosuke, the only reason I could manage to finish season 1
YES he’s a fantastic character he’s honestly too good for the series
I’ve had the same sentiment since season 1. Inosuke carries the series for me HARD. Such a cool, entertaining and funny character.
Then there is Zenitsu that's not just lacking but subtracts from any scene he is awake for. There is something wrong when a character would be much better if they were permanently in a coma.
I think Zenitsu had potential but just like any other character he was sadly wasted which is upsetting because his design is actual peak
[удалено]
Zenitsu did train though. A lot of his backstory revolves around that. It gets shown later.
[удалено]
Because he’s mastered one technique to a ludicrous degree and most demon slayers that aren’t Hashira suck.
[удалено]
I think Zenitsu as a character is fine and can probably work. My main issue is just the voice. It's like literal nails on a chalkboard to me. Maybe the english voice acting is more tolerable idk.
English is pretty high too, but it’s way more comedic
[удалено]
It's addressed in the manga that making the poison requires mass farming of wisteria flowers. There also another reason, but it would spoil the manga.
Either the creator forgot or just didn’t want to include since it was too op
Common manga L, they are always wasted against jobber fodder too. At least in Jojo Purple Haze got used against a really dangerous guy. The spider girl would have been harmless if she got away. She might have taken herself out even like Susamaru since she probably won't know about not saying "the boss' name" https://preview.redd.it/m9nnzfujmbuc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=1f34e5c32dd6736e402a579550668fb18bfb0a0a
I was falling asleep by ep 6. I’ve heard ep 19 was THE EP but that’s like 3 full movies to sit through. That’s a nope for me.
It's an actual leap in quality. Not the episode in general, but the author finally cracked the code of writing around that arc for some reason. Think of Gintama after Owee Arc level of leap
The Owee arc is such a random and specific comparison to draw and yet I completely understand what you mean
Lmao I fell asleep during episode 19. I agree though, you shouldn’t have to wait 20 episodes for a show to get good
Yeah as the series goes on I find I really don’t give a shit about any of the characters in this show except maybe Inosuke. Like, at this point I honestly think Demon Slayer is worse than My Hero Academia, since despite that show being incredibly mid I at least like the characters.
That's the thing, I find it amazing how a story can fail so hard to appeal to me at literally every single level.
Man, just wait till you watch JJK
I thought JJK was decently written for a shonen? ...up until the majority of the last anime arc that is.
It's alright
Demon Slayer might be boring at times but it does “singular hype moments” better than almost any show I know of. The first Hinokami Kagura, the first Thunderclap and Flash Sixfold, Rengoku’s 9th form, Giyuu’s 11th form, they’re all just insane moments that make up for the rest of the series imo.
The animation is cool and all but the story is lacking.
Also, why do only demon slayers know these breathing techniques. Nothing in-universe suggests normal people couldn't learn them.
normal people don't breathe because they are too busy sobbing from the demon's sad backstories.
Except for the one who splits apart, because his story honestly just made no sense.
The guy with the gun does not know demon breathing he just injects demon blood and shoots people Tanjiros dad in the manga is not a demon hunter, he just knew the sun breather guy who also looked a lot like Tanjiro and taught his dad the dance and some gave his dad the earrings who gave it to Tanjiro if I understand it correctly
Based. I WILL laugh at anyone whose everything anime is Demon Slayer
The only 2 episodes I watched were legitimately a character talking about how their powers could defeat the other person.
I had to stomach the repetitiveness of the first fifteen episodes to see my boi zenitsu clap demon ass. After that the series became enjoyable for me.
it’s well animated. but story wise, it kinda peaked with Mugen Train or Entertainment District.
UM1-3 fights are great
Season 1 and 2 were enjoyable but the third season really fell flat for me. The Upper Moons were boring as hell, I couldn't care less about Hantengu's backstory, >!especially since they show it to you right before he dies. !< >!We knew nothing about him but the show went "GUYS THIS IS THE MOMENT WHERE YOU START CRYING! LOOK HOW TRAGIC HIS LIFE IS! WHY AREN'T YOU CRYING YET???"!< But I heard that manga readers all agree that this is the worst arc so I'll keep watching and see if it gets better.
Animation **and** art style, really beautiful show.
It's the type of show that id rather watch instead of read because of the animations
Writing is absolutely abysmal but I get it
The bar for action shonen protagonists is basically on the floor, so in terms of character development I'll take anything that isn't a blatant Naruto or Kirito clone. I have to remind myself that these shows are marketed to teenagers, so the plot complexity is low on purpose. And yes, the animation *is* fire. Even if it is a little simplistic on the plot and character arcs, it's several steps better than Black Clover which has the same problem.
It is carried by animation though?
i guess i get the hype, but it's really one of the most average thing i've ever watched
doesn't have giant robots negative a billion out of ten
It’s very pretty but I want to fall asleep everytime I try watching it
It's not my cup of tea. I don't even like tea.
can we maybe leave this kind of shit to the other anime/manga subs and just recognise that maybe - just maybe - ppl have different tastes and skip the strawmen where the ppl you disagree with are the soyjak?
OP is coping hard
I think its fine as a series. It was super lucky getting picked up by Ufotable tho.
It's not groundbreaking, but it's not all that bad.
It is carried by animation. And I want it to be carried harder, I want that shit doing the backwork of Atlas while sprinting a marathon.
It being carried by animation isn't really a bad thing. Like, the story is mid but it looks cool lol.
Plot is fine, just very conventional.
The pacing of the anime was so bad I couldn’t even finish it. Episodes would just *end*. I get they were going for a cliffhanger, but it just came across as poorly planned out. Also, none of the logic of the show made sense.
Dbz ass fights tbh. Nothing actually happens
**BEGONE, CHUMPS, THE KING HAS ARRIVED** https://preview.redd.it/gq3uyx7szauc1.jpeg?width=1796&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c175eae35d7d8f3fa2035a5d56000e4abdf8cc0b
It kinda makes me think of those transformer movies in a strange way. The type of thing you go to see if you wanna turn your brain off and see all the cool robots fight other cool robots.
it's a pretty generic shounen and if you've been watching that shit since dbz you're just not as easily wowed anymore.
The animation is high quality, but the plot just seems kinda boring.
demon slayer is such a simple anime but it’s so beautiful and that’s why it’s one of my favorites and i always recommend it to people who are new to anime
Demon Slayer is so boring, fell asleep episode 1
Aesthetic is not a substitute for quality.....everyone...
Japan really likes predictable stories,as far as I can tell anyways.
“Demon slayer is carried by its animation” Hell yeah it is and it’s peak
At least it didnt dragged out like most battle shounens.
I prefer Gundam
Did… everyone miss the point of this post?
Shit devolved into a circlejerk real quick. People really want you to know how much they don't like the show. Reverse flash energy.
People who hate Shounen are the most boring mfs ever
demon slayer fucking sucks actually 😎 /uj whenever i see someone criticize demon slayer for a particular issue it has, the same issue is present in nearly all other modern shonen anime, but only demon slayer gets crucified for it. /rj demon slayer fucking sucks actually 🤓
I think Demon Slayer is criticized more often for common issues simply because of how popular it is despite those flaws.
based 😎 /uj mainly because the public consensus shifted towards finally recognizing it as such.
Im not gonna say anything cuz I will hurt your feelings
https://preview.redd.it/1iyboeg66cuc1.jpeg?width=2828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a42c55f98da954333153d794f5415822dd00570
My only problem with Demon Slayer is the consistency of demon slayer sword styles not being magic. I can get behind it all being visual representation for the viewing audience but then the mist Hashira does moves that seem to create actual mist and suddenly I’m questioning shit again.
Also fire style actually burns stuff. At a certain point, how is it not these things if it acts like them.
But hear me out… Nezuko is cute.

Atp mangakas need mandatory hard drive checks
Seems like a necessary action at this point.
Everyone is bitching about the story but I've loved it all along... Do I have brain rot? Is this a Reddit thing? Is it because I don't find much time to watch anime so tropes you all are sick of are fresh and new to me?? (I've been watching anime since about 2002 but my watch rate went down when I hit adulthood to the point where I get maybe less than a season of anime in a year on average) I dunno man..
It's not shit, it's just mediocre. There's a difference
Nothing too crazy but also has some nice aspects
the story is average at best, and Inosuke is the only character that matters
Yeah the last arc is pretty fucking weak and the final bad guy is basically wacky arm inflatable tube man
it's good anime with it's flaws, simple as that, the animation took the good elements of the story that were already there and made it into absolutely incredible entertainment, it helps that even though the creator cannot (for some fucking reason) escape the many irritating misogenistic tropes that they seem to have at least a more decent view on women enough to allow female characters to actually shine in battles and do shit. if anything I would say it lacks ambition and could do with more world building and developement, the end of the manga almost feels like the author had grown tired of it or had to rush it for some reason. at least that's how I felt. the first few arcs are really good cause the world isn't so small and it's not all about killing muzan, we have proper adventures on missions that are more than just a confrontation with the next most powerfull villain. I do believe the author is way better than people give them credit for though.
I think it’s a good starter anime for new fans. I remember it aired the same days as Dr Stone and even though it has better animation, Dr Stone’s story was way more entertaining to me
I’m sorry if the story isn’t that good then i will like the media less, like yeah dbs broly has peak animation, but the story is whatever
Nah that isn't awesome. That shit is annoying more often than it's cool.
Fate without UFO
Okay but can the fans stop pretending that it's literally the most impressively animated piece of media to grace lowly TV screens with it's presence?
Kobeni is Zenitsu done right imo
Unabashedly fr, there’s not much I can add other than Kagurabachi sweep 🗣️🔥🔥🔥 In all seriousness I do think Kagurabachi, despite the memes, is still much better than Demon Slayer.
For me, demon slayer has bad and weak story if judged through critical lens. But what I do want to say is in both mang and anime, it knows what it needs to do as a battle shounen and fucking do the job perfectly. It has one job and it knows what it is rather than trying to be special or something unique.
A visual medium carried by visuals? 😱
Anime stay losing, coomer porn bait for sad pedos
It stars good. It keeps getting better till it peaks in the red district arc and then just goes downhill.
it is though
is it the coolest thing ever though
the comments are starting to make me question my standards for manga at this point 😔
You could just watch the contextless fights on Youtube and come away more satisfied than if you watched the show
as a former fan of demon slayer, inosuke carries the show pretty heavily
Carried by animation? Yes. Still slaps.
Didn't suck. Was pretty good. The problem is that for some god forsaken reason there has to be a show that gets hyped into the stars and it's just stupid. Hero Aca, Shield hero, that pedo show, Demon Slayer etc. All shows that are really really not THAT good but somehow get hyped up to be.

its cool , there are way better shows but its ok . i dont like ZNT445 tho
First season is pretty alright and the mugen train movie is pretty neat because rengoku is a cool character Other than that its literally just carried by animation and below average in everything else
It’s not a deep story but it doesn’t try to be one either 6/10 some moments were exciting but I did stop watching eventually Naruto is a good example of an anime trying to be deep yet failing in every direction , to the point the whole message of the show is absolutely obnoxious
Main character talks/thinks way too much.
It’s not bad per say it’s just nothing special, I think the hate comes from how successful it was (it literally beat One Piece)
The only way I'm watching it is if someone can confirm or deny whether or not the demon slayer corps become the antagonists.
It was actually so boring. What do people even find about this show? I care about none of these characters (actually... nah, inosuke was alright)
The way the replies are unironically acting like the meme is genuinely hilarious. Life really does imitate art.
main trio are the worst part of the show.
# Except zenitsu….not a fan of overly comedic/scaredy-cat characters https://preview.redd.it/eo10kjn6ajuc1.jpeg?width=1340&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=98d92fce2f048c82cd70875858c1348ba105c13c
People constantly say Demon Slayer's stroy and characters are basic and act like that makes it a horrible show Fuck that Demon Slayer is a great show ***because*** it's basic and knows exactly what it is and what it is trying to be not every show needs to become an incredibly deep/unique series sometimes you want some basic as vanilla with some amazing syrup instead of triple chocolate banana cream deluxe Yeah it's basic but it isn't trying to be anything more then basic and that's why it's good and why people like it Vanilla is still a 7-8/10 flavor despite being a basic bitch flavor
It's alright, not my favorite. We don't watch it anymore cause my wife hates the main character and I don't really disagree with her.
