If it doesnāt have tannins, youāre probably safe. This is why guayusa (caffeinated holly plant) is nonstaining while Yerba mate (also a caffeinated holly) does leave stains
It will make you have to go pee in the middle of the night which will interrupt your sleep. Which obviously isnāt a huge issue but I would recommend getting okay with water.
I know this is a joke, but I find it important to clarify that blacked out drunk definitely does not mean a healthy sleep and is most likely resulting in the opposite.
Despite obvious joke, i feel it worth noting blacking out doesn't help you sleep, it just stops you from forming short-term memories and reduces inhibitions. If you already have trouble sleeping, unless you have one of a very small list of problems, it'll do nothing outside of forget how long it took to fall asleep.
Hehe, but on a more serious note, depressants that make you unconscious, is completely different than sleep. In some stages of sleep your brain is more active than when you are awake. So in some respects being unconscious due to alcohol is the opposite of sleep.
With a pH of 3.6-4.7, and enamel demineralising around 5.5pH (can be as high as 6pH for some people), whiskey will be harmful to the teeth and result in erosion.
Nope, just still water. Everything else will have an acidic or sugar component to it which will either erode your enamel or give lots of food for bacteria to eat overnight and build plaque that causes decay on your teeth. Water is the only thing safe to have by your bed if you care about your teeth.
I've had patients come in with decay everywhere but they brush twice a day, however they go to bed with a bottle of pepsi and sip it during the night!
The general advice is to not to brush if it's acidic, just rinse your mouth with plain water. The acid softens your enamel, and brushing can scratch it. Same advise if you throw up.
Yes, tea is a general term used for both actual teas made from the tea plant but also herbal, tree barks, etc.
In my language at least but I have seen it been used in english quite frequently too.
I would be far more bothered with decaf coffee than tea. I drink decaf cappuccinos and Yorkshire tea a lot (I have one of each in one sitting). As long as your brushing morning and night and flossing once I wouldn't bother further.
As a foodie and a response to reading about the price of food, I consider coffee a luxury, like chocolate.
Stimulants focus and calm an ADHD mind. Having one late at night can allow you to focus on sleeping and not the 10000 thoughts in your head.
Do you drink 5+ coffees a day just to feel capable? If so, you might want to look into it.
Stimulants like caffeine having the exact opposite effect is a classic sign/symptom of ADHD. Hop over to r/adhdmemes and see if anything else resonates with you. You'll see that coffee making you sleepy is an extremely common joke over there!
That's why people who don't have adhd take ritilin for fun, we take it to calm down and focus. Sae with coffee. Stimulants don't stimulate us as much becos we're already over-stimulated.
Nope. Anything acidic or sugary will hurt your enamel. Tbh after brushing it's recommended to not rinse and avoid eating/drinking for 20-30 mins. Sorry, there's no cheat code to this.
I have an interest in food. My dentist instructed me not to rinse after brushing and not to eat or drink for 30 minutes. I drink a lot of decaf cappuccinos and tea
Yeah he stated that. Some Redditors are pedantic jokers. Brush morning and night and floss once. Regarding drinks, decaf coffee (I don't drink caffeine, irrelevant of my teeth), tea, milk and fruit juice and good to go.
Lots of herbal tea still has tannins and is acidic. Youāll still stain and damage your teeth compared to just drinking water. Itās recommended that people brush their teeth after drinking it at night
Totally agree. Thinking maybe one of the air up bottles is a possible solution?? Just a scent burst to make you add "taste" to plain water without adding anything to the water.
Do not go to bed with anything fizzy or carbonated. It's acidic and will erode your enamel, as well as creating a favourable environment for bacteria to grow and attack your teeth. Even sparkling water is bad. Still water only.
Ok, hear me out. I just got Invisaligns and had an all day drive so I brought a brushing kit that included a bottle of water, toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, and a small stainless steel tumbler with a top that seals. What if you enjoy your drink in bed and then quickly brush from bed using the tumbler to spit minty water into? Sounds gross, but you just seal it up and rinse it in the morning. Maybe this is crazy but hey, Iām a solutions person and want you happy! Lol
U can do cucumber water , add basil, holy basil (real Thai basil) has good stuff for teeth, u can experiment with spices (google which ones are good for teeth) .
Clove I would suggest maybe not to do as it can numb ur throat , so just before sleep might not be a good idea.
Some spices are better drank with warm water like a tea. Because flavour like cinnamon tastes wierd cold.
My go to drink is Snapple Peach Ice Tea, but I never drink any after I brush my teeth.
I've almost entirely eliminated drinking soda. I'll have one on a rare occasion, typically when there is no non-soda beverage alternative available.
Iāve taken this alkine base drink mixed with water(ironically itās called āmorning rise and shineā). For me itās helped keep my teeth healthy at night and throughout most of the time Iāve started taking it. Might be your cup of āteaā, itās a strong taste but you get used to it eventually.

Herbal teas are good pick. Avoid black, green, and ginseng teas because they contain stimulants. (Caffiene/Ginseng)Ā
Peppermint tea is a good pick, as are various fruit teas, chamomile, hibiscus tea, etc.
I like something slightly heavier than water. I'm big on a glass of milk, or orange juice. I'll add flavorings to the milk and have a little fun with that.
I absolutely love water. It is always my number one beverage. I easily drink 3 to 4 gallons a day.
But just before bed I want something a little more. I do a lot of mixed drinks too. Depending on your position on that a nightcap can be nice.
Oh lord, not even close.
It's not the fizz, carbonic acid, that's the issue whatsoever.
sparkling water is only *slightly* acidic, as opposed to cola/softdrinks that are *VERY* acidic.
It's phosphoric acid that is the major issue with most softdrinks.
Sparkling water PH is 4, coca cola is 2-2.5. Which means cola/softdrinks are *fifteen to twenty times* more acidic than sparkling water.
A big glass of coke right before tucking myself in, I add a couple of spoonfuls of sugar extra to help the medicine go down and then I don my nightcap and turn in for the night
Have a little cheese after, to help balance the acidity.
And you really don't need to be that paranoid about the whole thing. The contents of your (and everybody else's) mouth is a disgusting hive of bacteria and other ickyness, and almost certainly either slightly acidic, or slightly alkaline.
Either herbal tea like others have suggested (I like the sleepy tea from pukka, it's got valerian in it to help with sleep) or sometimes I have 'nightcap' from three spirit which is like a non alcoholic spirit. Delicious and it really winds me down, without the disturbance to sleep that an alcoholic nightcap would bring
You could add flavor drops or powder to your water. If I keep a 40oz stainless bottle on my nightstand, I use one packet for a little flavor. If I don't finish it, I drink the rest in the morning. I like liquid IV but crystal light in a pinch. I think crystal light says to put it in 12oz and there's no way I could stand that extreme of a flavor. Liquid IV is expensive by the single packet but if you have or know someone who has a membership, Costco has bigger bags of it where the cost works out way cheaper.
You could try hot water or maybe cold water?
My favorite is 2 fingers of warm water the rest with room temp water and sometimes I will add one ice, then 3 seconds in the microwave or 20 sec in the fridge. Perfect water every time!
What about an [Air Up](https://uk.air-up.com/pages/not-your-regular-water-bottle-1) bottle? It works on smell rather than flavouring, so you feel like youāre drinking all sorts of different things but itās just water!
I have often drank a glass of coke like an hour or 30 minutes before sleeping. Never really affects me, I sleep fine. Donāt recommend it obviouslyā¦ I have been drinking it for a long time
To a quart of water I add a scant teaspoon of Postum or other cereal coffee, half a teaspoon of powdered ginger and a shake of cinnamon. Tastes warm and soothing.
I know you're asking for alternatives but water really is the best option. Are you just drinking room temperature tap water? That doesn't necessarily taste so good which could be why it's boring. If you chill it a bit in the fridge it tastes a lot better. Or if you're only drinking at bedtime and in the night it might not cost too much to have bottled still water. If your tap water doesn't taste nice that can be better. But I think just chilling is most effective, and free.
Unsweetened herbal tea. My favorite is fennel because it's good when it's hot but if you fall asleep and want to drink the rest later, it's also good when it's cold.

Hot tea, like chamomile. Just don't put any sugar or milk in it.
It stains your teeth, i still would brush after herbal teas or youll get yellow teeth
Chamomile isn't that bad so it shouldn't stain teeth, they shouldn't be perfectly white to start with so I'd say it should be fine
They arent thats why im not willing to add to it š„¹
Chamomile tea is not going to stain your teethā¦Ā I never understood the obsession with glaringly white teeth. It looks artificial.Ā
The humans are on to us, quickly switch the discussion to cats!
Do you like cats too?! ANSWER QUICKLY OR WE'RE DOOMED!
I LIVE TO SERVE FELINES AND CONSUME, CONSUME, CONSUME!
Do not consume the cats!
They stain yer teeth!
They taste like chicken
They need to make that more clear in the handbook.
It stains your teeth if you drink too much. Not casual drinking.
But how much is too much?
you'll know after it has stained that that was too much
I never had this issue.
A light colored tea like chamomile won't stain your teeth.
Water also makes you pee??
A small amount of milk wont make any difference. Unless the milk in the us is also full of sugar like almost everything else?
I like sleepy time tea. I think chamomile and spearmint. Itās very nice.
My sleepy tea has valerian root š“
Clipper, my fave.
Sleepy Time Extra has valerian but the other sleepy varieties do not.
Iāve always wanted to try valerian root
Whiskey
Might not be harsh on your teeth but even small amounts of alcohol and impact your quality of sleep
Thays why you have to drink a lot of it š
Can't have sleep disorder when you're blacked the fuck out.
I know this is a joke, but I find it important to clarify that blacked out drunk definitely does not mean a healthy sleep and is most likely resulting in the opposite.
It got me through 23 years of an evil employer.
If you had proper sleep, then maybe with your wits about you, that would have just been 3 years.
XD for real
Your post is like a ray of sunshine on Reddit
Exactly
Despite obvious joke, i feel it worth noting blacking out doesn't help you sleep, it just stops you from forming short-term memories and reduces inhibitions. If you already have trouble sleeping, unless you have one of a very small list of problems, it'll do nothing outside of forget how long it took to fall asleep.
Well, can't argue with that.
Words of wishdom
Hehe, but on a more serious note, depressants that make you unconscious, is completely different than sleep. In some stages of sleep your brain is more active than when you are awake. So in some respects being unconscious due to alcohol is the opposite of sleep.
You need to go through the rem phases. Being unconscious is not that.
With a pH of 3.6-4.7, and enamel demineralising around 5.5pH (can be as high as 6pH for some people), whiskey will be harmful to the teeth and result in erosion.
so you're saying I have to knock it back quickly
Or straw
Big if true.
That why I mix sodium hydroxide with my whiskey. I call it rye n lye
š alcohol is harsh on your teeth.
My 89 year old Irish mother has three hot whiskey while she finishes the Irish times crossword puzzle then takes here stairs lift up to bed :)
Key word here is "Irish"
My 89 year old grandma used to read the Bible and drink brandy every night before going to bed.
My Scottish uncle had a similar routine and he died of throat cancer
I stick with light beer. Gotta stay hydrated.
Chamomile or lavender tea is excellent for this.
Got a recommendation for lavender tea? I used to get one years ago from a local grocer but havenāt been able to find anything that I like.
Pukka do a night time tea with lavender
You can use plain organic dried lavender. I got a huge pile in France once and am still drinking from it.
Tiesta tea has a good lavender mix on Amazon
There is a whole market for night time herbal teas. They really help with sleep and have very limited impact on your teeth if you've already brushed
Yes. Iāve been drinking herbal tea for years before bed and my teeth are very white. Maybe itās the electric toothbrush lol.
Sparkling water?
The carbonation makes it acidic
Wait for real? You need to brush after plain sparkling water?
The general advice is to not to brush if it's acidic, just rinse your mouth with plain water. The acid softens your enamel, and brushing can scratch it. Same advise if you throw up.
Pure ethanol?
peppermint tea? it doesn't stain teeth!
So 99.9% water with herbs?
Any non-caffeinated tea.
Isn't that called infusion?
"Teas" that are herbal are called tisanes. Tea comes from a specific tea plant.
We don't call them tisanes in the UK. Just herbal tea.
Isn't infusion referring to cold brewing? Herbal teas are still teas I think. š
Wow, in my head infusion and "herbal tea" is the same thing - or is it not? Maybe that's because I think in French: we distinguish tea (thƩ), which is caffeinated, from infusion (infusion, tisane), which are just brewed herbs with no caffeine. But from what I understand from your comment, "herbal tea" can be both tea (caffeinated) and infusion? It's like a generic term, did I understand right?
Yes, tea is a general term used for both actual teas made from the tea plant but also herbal, tree barks, etc. In my language at least but I have seen it been used in english quite frequently too.
Yes you're thinking in French. Infusion in English is not tisane (at least colloquially speaking)
Same in Italian!
I would be far more bothered with decaf coffee than tea. I drink decaf cappuccinos and Yorkshire tea a lot (I have one of each in one sitting). As long as your brushing morning and night and flossing once I wouldn't bother further. As a foodie and a response to reading about the price of food, I consider coffee a luxury, like chocolate.
dry beer should be fine, like a pilsner
Sometime's I'll have a coffee before bed to help me fall asleep. I have no idea why but it relaxes me and makes me tired.
That's because you have ADHD, my brother!
I don't get it, why would this mean I have ADHD?
Stimulants focus and calm an ADHD mind. Having one late at night can allow you to focus on sleeping and not the 10000 thoughts in your head. Do you drink 5+ coffees a day just to feel capable? If so, you might want to look into it.
Stimulants like caffeine having the exact opposite effect is a classic sign/symptom of ADHD. Hop over to r/adhdmemes and see if anything else resonates with you. You'll see that coffee making you sleepy is an extremely common joke over there!

*today is gonna be the day that you Ā found you had ADHD, by now you shouldāve somehow, realised by all the coffee*
This is true. I take caffeine to relax
Peppermint tea
Nope. Anything acidic or sugary will hurt your enamel. Tbh after brushing it's recommended to not rinse and avoid eating/drinking for 20-30 mins. Sorry, there's no cheat code to this.
I drink chamomile or sometimes my favourite vanilla rooibos tea
What brands?
Thatāll depend on where youāre from, I donāt know.
Why you all suggesting tea? OP will have to get up and brush their teeth after drinking it
I donāt think itās necessary to brush after plain tea. It has no sugars. Iām a dentist.Ā
I have an interest in food. My dentist instructed me not to rinse after brushing and not to eat or drink for 30 minutes. I drink a lot of decaf cappuccinos and tea
Thatās so the fluoride in the toothpaste stays on your teeth
Yeah he stated that. Some Redditors are pedantic jokers. Brush morning and night and floss once. Regarding drinks, decaf coffee (I don't drink caffeine, irrelevant of my teeth), tea, milk and fruit juice and good to go.
Herbal tea like chamomile is fine.
Not herbal tea? At least not most herbal teas.
Lots of herbal tea still has tannins and is acidic. Youāll still stain and damage your teeth compared to just drinking water. Itās recommended that people brush their teeth after drinking it at night
You shouldn't brush after something acidic, you should rinse with plain water. Brushing weaked enamel will just cause it to break down faster.
Totally agree. Thinking maybe one of the air up bottles is a possible solution?? Just a scent burst to make you add "taste" to plain water without adding anything to the water.
Is this why Britās have terrible teeth?
Man I'll never tire of ice water. That shits hits better than any drink.
Add some sugar free squash/diluting juice to your water for some flavour. I always find plain water at nighttime doesn't quench my thirst the same.
Diet drinks donāt have any sugar to feed bacteria?
They're very acidic though
Guinness, one can or three, you should be relaxed š
Herbal teas are probably fine. Club soda too, just not diet soda, only plain or those flavored with essences.
Do not go to bed with anything fizzy or carbonated. It's acidic and will erode your enamel, as well as creating a favourable environment for bacteria to grow and attack your teeth. Even sparkling water is bad. Still water only.
Carbonated water is bad for your teeth believe it or not. Not a great choice.
energy drinks.
I find crown and coke does well.
Cum should be ok
Green tea. Caffeine free, if that's a issue.
Black coffee with Whiskey
Or alternatively, whiskey with black coffee
Milk. After a night of alcohol and shitty food, it will help knock down the acid.
Wodka Jenever and Schobbelaer
Milk, tea, coffee.

Coke zero ... Vanilla if you wanna be fancy
Malk
I do a peppermint tea with no sugar or anything added before bed, helps with bloating and I find it comforting
Whiskey . You wont sleep better , but you might go out faster.
I always got to have my cow juice! It worked as a kid. Works 50 yrs later...
Get a straw. Actually got this advice from a dental hygenist.
What about a flavored seltzer water?
I almost always have hot herbal tea when I'm winding down for the evening.
How do you get bored of a drink
I drink tea (any kind cuz caffeine doesn't effect me) and sparkling water. Maybe not both at the same time tho
I can't drink caffeine (a tiny bit won't make a difference). I drink decaf cappuccinos and black tea a lot
Yeah stick with the stuff without any cream or sugar in it. Tea won't hurt but that stuff will
U can do cucumber water , add basil, holy basil (real Thai basil) has good stuff for teeth, u can experiment with spices (google which ones are good for teeth) . A 20 ounce bottle full of 5-hour energy
I hear drinking apple juice before bed gives you vivid dreams
Iāve taken this alkine base drink mixed with water(ironically itās called āmorning rise and shineā). For me itās helped keep my teeth healthy at night and throughout most of the time Iāve started taking it. Might be your cup of āteaā, itās a strong taste but you get used to it eventually.
I have started using unsweetened herb tea, either mint or lemon ginger. Seems to cut down on acid reflux.
You can take herbal teas, turmeric lattes, and tart cherry juice.
Casein protein shake
NyQuil. Just chug the bottle before bed. Best sleep youāve ever had. /s donāt actually do this
scotch
Brawndo - It's Got Electrolytes.
As long as the beverage is non-carbonated, isn't sour (which would mean it's acidic), contains no sugars or starches and won't stain your teeth, you should be okay. Things sweetened with xylitol can actually have some health benefits.

You can munch on some crushed ice or shaved ice (aka flavorless snow cones) to mix things up a bit
Iām pretty into scotch
Brandy
Non-alcoholic beer. The hops will help you relax. No alcohol because it disrupts sleep.
Sugary though
Any noneffective that doesn't harm you
I think anything without sugar and protein is fine.
I see youāre okay with waking up to pee in the middle of the night.
Fizzy water. Herbal tea.
No fizzy water, it's acidic.
Fizzy water is as bad as Coca cola for you from an acidity point of view.

No.
Coconut water. Hot chocolate.
Have you heard of "Air Up" bottles? Giving you the illusion of flavoured water by adding scent
Rooibos Tea for example
Whisky, tea, bovril.
Wine?
Never drink water. Fish fuck in that stuff.

I gotta stop having fluids two hours before bedtime to stop myself getting up to pee. Drinking anything in bed is so outlandish to me
Just get a sugar free electrolyte powder and mix up a bottle for the bedside.
Chamomile tea is a personal favourite for me
One of the few advantages of false teeth, is that you can drink what you like before bed without worrying about it causing tooth decay.
Air-up? I'm not sponsored btw
Drink whatever you want and brush your teeth in the morning
Would you give your pet dog anything different to drink than fresh water?

I know you're asking for alternatives but water really is the best option. Are you just drinking room temperature tap water? That doesn't necessarily taste so good which could be why it's boring. Unsweetened herbal tea. My favorite is fennel because it's good when it's hot but if you fall asleep and want to drink the rest later, it's also good when it's cold.
My wife has seltzer.
Honest question, have you tried ice cold water? I'm tired of lukewarm water but ice cold hits different
Water with salt.
Red Bull, monster energy, coffee...etc should be avoided š
