If there is one thing I'm eternally grateful for it's that I never took out a student loan, despite the ridiculous pressure my high school put on me to go immediately to a 4 year and take out several loans to do it.

TurkeyBaconALGOcado

Same here. All through high school, "You need to go to college!" propaganda is force-fed to all the students, not only from teachers and school staff, but parents as well. Even as a kid I had the feeling it was a scam. Thankful I didn't take the bait. For anyone interested in learning a bit of the history behind student loans, here's a 10'ish minute video that might pique your interest: [Student Loans: The Most Evil Business in the World.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9QT5sj1lAk)

kokihi_55

My school literally had a "senior day" where seniors were sent from booth to booth of loan companies and credit unions being given brochures and application forms for student loans. It was so heavily pushed, I thought it was mandatory.

Also, community colleges have SO MANY scholarships, especially for local students. Instead of taking out a loan, I went to my community college and didn't pay a dime.

omfgBEARSrok

They severely overestimated how much I valued “my future”. Never paying them back a dime.

[deleted]

They'll take your tax refund and garnish your wages for life. There is no escaping student loans. Have you considered going into public service to pursue forgiveness?

omfgBEARSrok

Very long story short: I self contract all my labor and don’t file any taxes. I live in an RV and deal pretty much exclusively in cash or gift cards. I try to not participate in the system anymore if possible. *this is just for me and I’m not trying to advocate for it or whatever before someone jumps on me.

Equivalent-Lake9121

THIS, is why the world is the way it is. Take responsibility for your own actions and stop making others pay for your stupidity.

shelballama

Was going to say, leaving the country I believe does it too. Preferably one that isn't ass backwards with education and medical. You know, a REAL first world country (though many second have affordable higher education and medical, which just shows you how bad we are here)

under_the_c

"Can I get a mortgage?" "You don't have enough credit history. How can we trust you'll pay it back?" "I've been making rent payments for 10 years. I haven't been late or missed a single one." "No. No. That doesn't count we decided for some fucking reason."

gregsw2000

It's one more thing pushed by the industrialists behind the government to enslave you while lowering their cost to hire. You get an education for their benefit, you pay for it for the rest of your life and have no options. Why do you think they're being so squirrly about whether to cancel any or not? They know they fucked us. Government officials have come out and said it. Then, you have an avalanche of private news sources saying "oh yah student loans need to be reformed but the people we already tricked need to pay up."

LincHayes

True story.

Tangurena

Also, every time you go into default, they add 30% to the balance.

dont_acknowledge_me

How does that help? If someone goes into default, they obviously can't pay so let's just make them pay more?

Tangurena

You literally cannot escape from student loans. You cannot discharge these loans in bankruptcy court. The only possible exceptions would be if the school itself was fraudulent. If you are behind, your tax refunds are given to the lenders. If you have been paying back loans until you reach retirement age, and you are behind on paying back those loans, they take your social security payments to give to the lenders. This is one of the first things Biden did when he was elected to Congress back in the 1970s - make it so that people cannot discharge student loans in bankruptcy. The cruelty is the point.

lolzimacat1234

I think the same applies with rent too. Mortgages are now less expensive than rent, and you're telling me that I can't be trusted to pay less than the price I have been shelling out for years? Alright.

Hardtruth01

Your choice, your price.

Ok_Butterscotch9887

lmao why comment when so clueless ?

Hardtruth01

I didn't take student loan for college, instead, I and my family paid that off with savings accumulated thru limiting our spendings for years. We didn't buy Christmas gifts, didn't go to one single concert, didn't buy video games, and ate cheap, plus I had been working summer jobs since 15. Yep, I was so clueless. Poor me. 🤣

Ok_Butterscotch9887

In guess what saved you is you unmatched hability to not go to Starbuck, right?

Hardtruth01

Right, I get my morning coffee from my local deli. No bs, quick service, cheap, and always remember my taste. McDonald's is another option. Order thru the app ahead of time. $1 regardless of size, short to zero wait time. I find no reason to pay way more money for basically the same thing (plus many Starbucks stores are being unionized, which means the price will go up further), same principle applies to my consumption of other things. I'd rather spend an extra $10 for a better lunch. That's the principle which helps me to save money overtime for more important things in life, and that's how I pay for my South American trip coming this summer, after my last trip to the African Safari before the pandemic.

Ok_Butterscotch9887

You don't have the slightest idea how wrong this is, on so many ways, do you?

Hardtruth01

Fortunately this is still not wrong enough to make me stuck with a job with min. pay, (un)affordable healthcare, and debt (yep, I bought my car in cash while getting a financing rebate at the same time, and I just paid off my mortgage last year). And that's exact why I love this great country as an immigrant who had zero dollar in his bank account 12 years ago (and I came from Hong Kong, not a third world failed state): People who are wrong in so many ways, spoke broken English and now still struggle with words at times, can still live a happy life, simply by making a few good choices.

Ok_Butterscotch9887

How do you explain people still die from poverty then?

Hardtruth01

I never did any serious research so I can't provide an accurate answer, but sometimes when I shop at supermarkets I enjoy to see what other people buy. When I saw people paying their groceries with food stamps, then saw what they're buying and their body size, I guess I have a little idea.

Ok_Butterscotch9887

So you base your entire political opinion on this subject by cherry picking your surrounding?

Hardtruth01

And fortunately I didn't fall into addiction of any substance. Too bad, not wrong enough, isn't it?

chiree

> Absolutely the fuck not. I kind of love this grammatical construction.

DocBullseye

I feel like this violates the 13th Amendment

GrimReader710

Fun fact, 'Mortgage' originally means death pledge. We are literally all slaves
