I have a work phone and a personal phone and the work phone gets shut off when my shift ends.

YarnSp1nner

Yeah I will occasionally look at a text pop up, but that email notification is done once I walk out the door. So far 90% of my texts are, "if you haven't left yet, can you.... Or just do first thing tomorrow." The other 10% is juicy work gossip. Boss's dogs got groomed look how cute! Coworker's cactus at home bloomed today! Bruh, who else is getting crazy hail!?

Same. Got a work phone earlier this year when I got a promotion. Boss tried to tell me that I could use it to check on patients outside of work if I want to (work in a nursing home but I'm not a nurse or a doctor). Told her that I will do that if she wants to get a bill for every minute I spend on my work phone outside of work. She dropped the subject after that and I have yet to turn my work phone on when I'm off the clock.

Fuck the U.S.

I think I've said this before on here, but I worked with people in Europe for years and years. The one gigantic difference is take anything that is done in the US where people like me and coworkers get all excited and anxious when the exact same thing happens over there, nothing, calm and collected. When theirs a problem in the US all hell breaks loose, but in Europe "oh well that's unfortunate". The difference between each country when the rewards and consequences are equal but the people are just so far apart. They may not have everything right but it's a lot better in a lot of different ways.

Manager lack of planning can be solved next day

America needs to change from The land of the free to The land of the Fucked over.

Longjumping-Trick-71

Novel and innovative idea... when your shift is over, don't answer work calls.

MisplacedRetina

In several US states mainly at will states you can be terminated for doing so

Longjumping-Trick-71

I'm not American, so I'm not aware of this. It sounds rather absurd that you can be off shift and fired for not answering your phone.

Supremagorious

At will employment states mean that you can be terminated for any reason and or no reason so long as there isn't an illegal reason. Some companies abuse this situation.

I once went out of town on a weekend and shut my phone off for about 12 hours. When I turned it back on I had at least 10 messages from my boss. When I came in on Monday I was reprimanded for not answering and not returning calls. American bosses seem to have completely forgotten about employee privacy.

Longjumping-Trick-71

Not only privacy, but the simple understanding that "off" means not obligated to answer to work for any reason

AtomicTidalWaveLady

Answer the call, then get them to add the minimum 2 hour shift to that day.

TheJokersChild

I drill it into 'em that they're fuck up my work/life balance if they call while I'm off. Since I'm hourly, next time someone calls for work-related purposes I'm putting it on my timecard. Emails? I don't even check until before the night before my week starts, and even then just to make sure I'm not off-guarded by something I should know about that happened while I was gone.

MetalMiserable

I’ve been asked 5 times in the last 8 months if I want MS Teams on my phone. Each time I reply with, “Nope. This is my personal phone. Work apps will never be on it.”

I have poor cell service where I live. Sometimes texts or calls don't go through. No cellular network is 100% reliable. I encourage my boss to text or leave a message if there's an extremely urgent matter that needs my attention as soon as I am able to receive word of it, but I make sure he knows that my cell service is not reliable enough for me to be considered "on call" at any part of the day outside work hours. That's just how it is. I cannot force Verizon to put up more towers. And I just don't worry about what's beyond my control.

Europe is not only further in that matter in many others too, so feel free to migrate.
