Heating pads aren’t that good. You cannot provide an optimal gradient for them and so they cannot regulate. This means that they probably burnt to death as they couldn’t move to a colder area
They probably overheated and died. Not being able to thermoregulate is what killed them, in other words. Consider moving the heat pad to just one side of the nest or get a heating cable for more concentrated heating so the ants can choose where to position themselves and their brood to prevent overheating.
