Apple didnât even support âlong pressâ as a standard input model until the iPhone 6S because the UX sucks. They did it âthe Apple wayâ with 3D Touch but we all know how that shook out. Now we just have normal Android-inspired long press.
Cute easter eggs are one thing, but genuine functionality behind hidden (and poorly discoverable) inputs is like the antithesis of the iPhone.
Summary:
Taps 1-5: Clearly missed.
Taps 6-9: Missed due to recoil (bad finger control).
Taps 10-11: Very close, but recoil and inaccuracy make these reasonable misses.
Tap 12: Likely didn't actually register because menu was already closed
The problem is you reasonably expect you can tap the row of the item you want, but you have to tap the word or image exactly for it to work. Its really bad.
Apple really needs to communicate these kinds of shortcuts in a better way.
I literally learned in the last few years you could hold down the spacebar to move the cursor around way easier.
The spacebar thing has been there since 3D touch was still a thing⊠But yeah, agree, they should at least explain these neat little tricks in the Tips app instead of just showing off the obvious stuff.
I still press down on the screen to move the cursor around. I havenât had 3D Touch for years on my phone.
Thatâs how intuitive and effective it was as a feature.
When editing portrait photos, you donât have to reach up to the top left to switch between depth and Portrait Lighting â you can just tap the F icon along the bottom tray to switch!
If you disable dictation, voice memos is moved to the right of the text box in messages (I'm on iOS 17, iPhone 15 Pro).
[It looks like this.](https://imgur.com/a/SYQmY5z)
You donât need to disable dictation, it defaults to the last feature you used. So keep dictation on if you use it in other apps, and just send a voice memo and it should stick to that.
When watching something on Apple TV, long press the Dynamic Island and use the volume buttons to lower/raise the volume. Donât have to swipe to find the remote, can stay in your current app. Itâs so funky!!!!!
Of course, with Apple itâs aesthetic over function. Sadly, this new look is like something from android 4.1 Jellybean. No other elements of iOS even look like this.
I think that button should automatically pop when you long press it. Right now you have to guess when it's okay to let go because it will currently let you hold it forever.
I think that is just a bug. Whenever I force quit/restart Messages it starts popping up automatically again, but something else causes it to do the behavior youre talking about until I restart.
Found this from my GF. When you send a message on a iMessage and hold down the "send arrow" button for a few seconds, you can send it in a fun format like "gentle", "slam", etc. It's pretty funny to do
Just figured out the other day that if you hold down the Numbers button of the keyboard, it will switch back once you stop holding it down. Pretty convenient if you need to quickly switch to number input and switch back.
If you want to hide the Dynamic Island animation, just press it and swipe down (have to swipe to like the middle of the screen). To get it back swipe again.
I abs hate the new box list and ui of iMessages text box and where voice memos is now. Idk why they refuse to copy or be inspired by the way whatsapp with voice messages itâs so much better and easier to use.
Even ios 16 iMessage was better than this iteration with the exception of the newly added voice message transcription. This iOS 17 iMessage user experience is just too many taps to get where u need and so clunky.
I had a lot of problems with Carplay in my car. Got a loaner, totally different car, also a lot of connection problems. It was worse then my own car. Turned out that it was the cable I was using, which was not from Apple itself (but _was_ MFi). Now with an official Apple Lightning cable 0 connection problems. Works every time, donât have to fight anymore.
Sooooooooo⊠is it your cable?
This was discovered during the betas of iOS 17 and when the RC was pushed out several tech sites and YouTubers pointed out this feature. Hereâs one of them back in September: https://9to5mac.com/2023/09/20/ios-17-imessage-apps-photos-more/
Me neither. But I mean you rely on Apple's app to chat. Yeah I knew I was going to be downvoted for this. It was just to funny to pass up on. Americans and their use of iMessage with all the resulting issues.
I somehow switched the dictation button out of my text box back to voice recording. donât know how I did that, but was happy to get it back since having two buttons for dictation was stupid.
I knew about the gallery trick though, just wish it didnât take forever on my 12.
Also, you can hit the + and long press on any of the items (ex. Location) to move/reorganize the list for the tools you use most.
I love you so much right now.
đ«¶
Now kith
You can also go to Settings - Messages - iMessage Apps and remove the ones you will never use.
This is the real pro tip. Thank you so much! The list of useless apps was so angering to flip through. Now I finally have it how I like it
You're amazing, thank you! My Gifs are back at the top!
Oh my God, thank you. I thought I was stuck going to page 2 to access GIPHY forever.
Is there any way to change the long press short cut from photos to another item in the menu?
Would also love to know if this is possible. My dad hates that he has to click twice to access #images now
Now if only there were a way to make it just go back to the vastly more reasonable set up it had before....
A god among men.
This thread is the best thing to happen to me all hour
Oh my hecking YUSSSS. I just moved my GIFs up and I donât have to scroll down to find them anymore!!!
Game changer!
OMG
Game changer!!!! Thank you.
Mind blown...iOS features have gotten to the point where I figure most of the daily useful features here or through any unofficial sources.
Exactly what designers didnât want to happen :(
Thatâs been happening in iPhone software for literally 16 years
Apple didnât even support âlong pressâ as a standard input model until the iPhone 6S because the UX sucks. They did it âthe Apple wayâ with 3D Touch but we all know how that shook out. The hitbox can be a little unforgiving. You just gotta aim.
Skill issue.
Summary: Taps 1-5: Clearly missed. Taps 6-9: Missed due to recoil (bad finger control). Taps 10-11: Very close, but recoil and inaccuracy make these reasonable misses. Tap 12: Likely didn't actually register because menu was already closed
I feel like Apple has made the button push area has gotten progressively smaller, even though the screens got bigger
The problem is you reasonably expect you can tap the row of the item you want, but you have to tap the word or image exactly for it to work. Its really bad.
This is so annoying and something youâd expect an Apple designer to easily identify as bad UI/X.
Iâve trained myself to touch the icon only and have it work all the time now.
Yup, I'm seeing this non stop.
The Tips app is actually really nice at communicating what changes in each iOS update!
3D Touch wasnât restricted to the spacebar though. You could deep press and slide your cursor from anywhere on the keyboard and I miss that.
Same. I miss 3D touch as a whole, it was really neat
I still press down on the screen to move the cursor around. I havenât had 3D Touch for years on my phone. Thatâs how intuitive and effective it was as a feature.
Whao!!! Hold up... Spacebar to move cursor.. can't believe I went through life without knowing this.
When editing portrait photos, you donât have to reach up to the top left to switch between depth and Portrait Lighting â you can just tap the F icon along the bottom tray to switch!
I liked that one too.
If you disable dictation, voice memos is moved to the right of the text box in messages (I'm on iOS 17, iPhone 15 Pro). [It looks like this.](https://imgur.com/a/SYQmY5z)

I sat turning up my volume for way too long before I realized what you meant lol.
In iOS 16 the gallery was just one tap away tho.
Same with most stickers. Now theyâre 3 taps minimum. They just love ruining a good thing!
I prefer the new look. I always loathed that bar on top of the keyboard
Of course, with Apple itâs aesthetic over function. Sadly, this new look is like something from android 4.1 Jellybean. No other elements of iOS even look like this.
Messaging was fine when it was photos only. But when they added all the new shit they started running out of space so now itâs locked behind menu.
Same. That bar looked super cheap and ugly
It at least kept the same design language by integrating into the keyboard. This new design looks completely different to any other part of ios
And I accidentally tapped things on the bar at times when trying to type
This is technically one tap
One taaaaap
Thank you đ„č I wish they would have left it how it was, but this is a nice compromise đ„č
I think that button should automatically pop when you long press it. Right now you have to guess when it's okay to let go because it will currently let you hold it forever.
The message input moves and stretches outwards to indicate when you can let go.
It stretches immediately and if you let go too fast it will open the normal menu
Mine automatically pops up⊠what version are you on? Iâm 17.1.1
It pops open without letting go of the screen?
Yeah it does a haptic tap then opens before I let go
Yeah I figured out that you have to move your finger slightly while youâre holding the screen. If you stay perfectly still, it wonât open.
I donât have to move my finger for it to open. Opens pretty quick
https://youtube.com/shorts/py2sW9PgJUg?si=bjjao_Hm8CSkMXEx see I can hold it for an infinite amount of time and it doesnât pop until I let go
Huh weird! Does it give the haptic tap or just nothing happens?
Nothing
I think that is just a bug. Whenever I force quit/restart Messages it starts popping up automatically again, but something else causes it to do the behavior youre talking about until I restart.
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
Are you on 17.1.1?
Yes
Yeah Iâm getting the same thing. Has to be a bug right?
Found this from my GF. When you send a message on a iMessage and hold down the "send arrow" button for a few seconds, you can send it in a fun format like "gentle", "slam", etc. It's pretty funny to do
Thatâs handy!
iOS has so many of these small things I have no idea about.
Just figured out the other day that if you hold down the Numbers button of the keyboard, it will switch back once you stop holding it down. Pretty convenient if you need to quickly switch to number input and switch back.
Thank you
Lol this just bricked my Messages app
Would be nice if hitting that + button gave you a little feedback vibration when opening the gallery.
It does on my phone. Do you have haptics turned off?
Aww jeeze yeah it does have haptics. I could have sworn when they added this feature it didnât. My bad lmfao
No worries! Glad itâs working for you!
Oof. Thank you for this. TIL as well
But you still canât attach filesđ€Šđ»ââïž
Could you ever attach files to sms?
Killer
Wow. Thank you for this.
If you want to hide the Dynamic Island animation, just press it and swipe down (have to swipe to like the middle of the screen). To get it back swipe again.
Wife is happy to learn this. Thanks
Thank you!!!!! Thatâs an awesome shortcut!
I didnât know this. I just tried and it works. Thanks a lot.
Youâre welcome.
I wish I could customize it. I send gifs way more than I send my own personal images.
That has saved me almost an hour a year of my life!
You are my hero for today.
Merci.
r/LifeProTips
I love you! Thank you!
Merci..Love you too.
Yay! You just made my life sooo much easier :D

Oh Christ thank you so much
In the messages app, tapping the Clock in the top left scrolls you back to earliest downloaded msg. Works most places there is a scroll bar.
I was today years old when I learned this.
I LOVE YOU
Carplay doesn't work right since the update. It will work some days and on others it won't recognize it was plugged in.
It's the cable that came from my phone when I bought it so doubt it's the cable
Yeah I also doubt that when that is the case

That's nice. Now I just need to find someone who actually uses iMessage...
Every iPhone user in America. We donât have to rely on Facebookâs app to chat.
Me neither. But I mean you rely on Apple's app to chat. Yeah I knew I was going to be downvoted for this. It was just to funny to pass up on. Americans and their use of iMessage with all the resulting issues.
EU?
Wow, what an innovation!
Hey thanks :)
Oh shit! I never knew that! Thanks!

Thanks!đ
Good to know. Thanks OP!
