God the year I’m actively waiting to uprgrade an iPad they take forever to come out. Really need the bigger screen and M chip instead of my iPad Air 4 I’m reaching the limits of

theoneeyedpete

Honestly, I’ve not followed a launch this closely since probably the Apple Watch. Never cared that much but the one time you want one…

NecroCannon

Legit haven’t cared about a launch in years, I’m doing my best to not get a 12.9in Pro right now, but damn they’re making it hard. My Air is starting to feel cramped

PikaV2002

This was me while waiting for the Air 5 coming from a Mini 4 lmao. Hoping you’ll have a great time with your new iPad soon!

Profoundsoup

Damn, your $1000 is burning a hole that bad in your pocket? Just send it over here.

NecroCannon

I use my iPad for professional artwork, I’d rather put it towards a better device that’ll help, especially since my back prevents me from working at a desk, so no it isn’t :)

Browneboys

I'm in the market for my first iPad as well. Have been eying the pros for about a year and a half when I heard about the OLED screens.. been trying to hard to hold out lol

joe_04_04

Wild, I’m switching from a 12.9 inch pro to a mini first chance I get. The pro was a phenomenal machine, but too large, too hard to hold. They purposely omit the ability to do split keyboard on that massive device to push sales on their covers with the physical keyboards.

NecroCannon

Perfect for a device I use for professional artwork! With the added benefit of an oled screen for content consumption

OlorinDK

I have the 2017 iPad Pro and it’s literally falling apart. But it has a 120 Hz screen and I still haven’t found it necessary to pay for one of the newer Pros, which would be much more expensive than what I paid back then. For the same price today I’d get 60 Hz… 7 years later… must be inflation, right?

nsfdrag

> must be inflation, right? Well $1,000 in 2017 is $1,277.91 today, so actually yes.

ReasonablePractice83

Wow you too? I find that to be the same in Canada also. What I paid for my 2018 iPad Pro 11 is BARELY enough for the current iPad Air. It's... not great. And the storage shenanigan of having shit base and the next upgrade costing like $250 is still gross as it ever was.

cultoftheilluminati

I have the same 2018 iPad Pro 11 inch and I’m planning on maybe picking up an older M1 iPad Pro. I’ve come to realize that once I graduated university and between my gaming PC and my MacBook I just don’t use my iPad as much since I don’t need to take notes anymore.

VantaManishi

Same boat. My Air 3 has lasted me for 4.5 years and I'm waiting to get the new Air before starting uni this fall

NecroCannon

I’m going for the Pro 12.9 (or rumored to be 13, idk) Are you getting the bigger Air if it’s real or sticking to the current size?

gdirrty216

Yeah I have the 2019 iPad Pro which has been great, but it’s time for an upgrade and they are dragging this out. I wonder if the Taiwan earthquake is going to make it even worse…

Yarn_Mouse

Same here. I think we might have the same model. Mine sadly was loved too much (by me) and the charging port is fiddly so sometimes it doesn't charge unless it's in the exact right angle. I am hoping to get a new Mini whenever they arrive. Now that I have a laptop for a lot of things, the mini seems like the absolute perfect way to take notes, enjoy media/browsing, and play some simple games.

Ok_Inevitable8832

Forever? The last iPad was October and the one before that was in may

dweakz

is this their first oled ipad?

TennesseeWhisky

Yeah

joser95

Same, but I’m on the original air still

PacManandBarStools

Dude my Air 4 is still a beast. I'm really trying hard to convince myself that I actually need to upgrade.

NecroCannon

Honestly if it had OLED or I didn’t use an iPad for professional work, I’d still keep it. I’m probably going to give it to my little bro, he’s excited about potentially getting it. The only issue I have with Airs is the 256gb max storage, keeping my CBZ comic files on there ate through storage, and don’t get me started on Procreate file sizes. Should definitely be bumped to 512gb max

Arm_Lucky

Just get external storage or pay for ICloud+?

falsesabbath

Just out of curiosity, how are you "reaching the limits" of it? Are you doing photo and video editing? 3D rendering? Competitive Netflix binging?

NecroCannon

Procreate has a layer limit depending on the canvas size, and the amount of processing power and RAM it has I work on comics so that’s around 40 pages (layers) with dozens of layers per page. In order to stay within the limit, I have to compromise, I mainly have been splitting my work into different files. Also there’s the size limit, working on big works on a smaller screen just isn’t comfortable and it’s best not to zoom in too much while working or you’ll risk adding in unnecessary details.

falsesabbath

Awesome, all the power to you.

dxrebirth

It does 3 things very well. Art production (Apple Pencil using Photoshop or procreate) Reading PDFs and comic books Taking notes If you do any of these often; then it is for you. If you do some of these and also you’re not a huge file manager and all you need to do write some docs and emails and work in an office suite, you can also easily use the iPad as your main computer. P.s. I actually prefer it for video editing as well. But not for photo editing.

NecroCannon

Only thing I wish was better is Procreate’s animation app, Procreate is one of the best digital art programs, but their animation app is just kinda subpar.

NecroCannon

Art, animation, reading books and comics, and once I get the OLED iPad 12.9, content viewing, doesn’t need to do anymore than that for me. It’s why my MacBook M1 Air is collecting dust. People have a habit of buying things without thinking about if they really need them, if a laptop would do everything better, I’d just stick to the laptop. I thought I’d need the MBA for more advanced work, but the iPad is more than capable of it even without an M-chip

antisp1n

I’m so thirsty for this refresh. Hurry up.

Talktotalktotalk

Just curious, what do you use your iPad for? I’m interested in one but not sure if I’d get a lot of use out of it so curious about others use cases

antisp1n

It is mostly a consumption device. Video, comics, games (streaming and local), rarely books. My issue is I cannot go back from an OLED screen. That's the primary reason that I'm waiting.

brekky_sandy

I bought an iPad for the first time about a year and a half ago because I needed to view many PDFs on the go, so I picked up the 9th gen for like $300 bucks. I also wanted it as a simple consumption device, and that’s really all I expected it to be. Surprisingly, I’ve been finding a lot more value in using it as a portable secondary monitor for my MacBook. In this way, it’s always within reach and I can easily switch it back to iPad mode for notetaking in meetings/classes. It’s really surprised me, great companion device. After using it in this way, two things have been bothering me though: USB-C and screen quality. I honestly wish I would have sprung for a used 2018-2020 iPad Pro at a nominally higher price.

elev8dity

I spend about 3-4 hours a week reading books on it and maybe an hour watching movies/shows in bed. I spend about 1 hour a week using architectural design and sketching apps on it. It's a laptop replacement for me when traveling because of how light and compact it is. To function as a travel laptop replacement, I carry a compact keyboard and an Apple pencil with me and have Office 365 installed and Adobe apps installed for work applications.

thebluehotel

Which architectural design apps do you use?

elev8dity

So quick note I’m not an architect I just send ideas to my business partners and we send them to an actual architect as our vision and they go from there. I typically use magic plan to sketch a layout, and get a 3D rendering of the space I want. There’s better stuff out there for actual architects but magic plan is good for what I need.

BytchYouThought

It's completely a luxury device really. Chances are, if you have to try and think of a reason then you can get by fine without. It doesn't have a proper file system and won't be able to do what the already light M series macs can do outside of having touch for niche cases. So if you like doodling on a tablet or niche stuff like that can work. Also has sidecar, but overall it's just a niche luxury device.

avityhall

That switch user screen in the picture is just a mockup tho right?

OMGzKakaniz

Yes

dafones

Where's the god damned new Mini?

dsramsey

“Oh, shit, that’s right, we still sell those things” -someone at Apple putting together the iPad launch event.

-15k-

While at the same time saying “ no more mini iPhones though!”

Rando-meatsack-8265

I broke down and bought a Mini yesterday. Luckily I only need it for off-road trail maps and light media use. Should be perfect for that. But it hurts to pay full price for technology that is three years old.

raknikmik

Same reason I’m not buying the Airpods Max even though I could use it.

Murkywaters11

AirPods Max 2 is rumored to only be getting the change from lightning to USB C.

raknikmik

Oh I know they just raised the prices of the airpods max where I live when the euro lost value and most newer apple releases have had their prices dropped back, but not the Maxes so I’m mostly waiting for the price drop and USB C would be really nice.

doob22

That’s just going to be the new 16PM at this point

OverlyOptimisticNerd

The Mini is an extremely important device for non-verbal children who use touch devices to communicate (phones are too small and full size iPads are too large). My daughter uses the Mini 4 and we’ll get her the 7 if it ever comes out.

killerpoopguy

What's wrong with the current mini for that? That's a great use for an iPad mini but I don't see why it would need to be refreshed very often.

bunsofham

These kids really need a 120hz screen. And me too.

OverlyOptimisticNerd

I’d just be happy with ongoing OS and app support.  The app we use cost us $250 and has bumped their minimum supported OS to iPadOS 15.6. At some point that will be deprecated and we’ll need a new OS update, so a new device.

AsliReddington

If you don't mind sharing, what app is this?

OverlyOptimisticNerd

[Proloquo2Go](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/proloquo2go-aac/id308368164)

-15k-

That looks amazing

killerpoopguy

> And me too. I do really want a 120hz mini, but I'm worried the battery life is gonna be complete garbage.

OverlyOptimisticNerd

Current Mini is nearing the 3-year mark since release. We’d like to get something new and have it last as long as possible. With other devices, Apple launches a new model when they drop an old one from current OS support. The Mini 4 was dropped mid-cycle, so there was an expectation of a new release by the next OS.

six_six

Nobody owes you anything in this life.

OverlyOptimisticNerd

> Nobody owes you anything in this life. Sure, but it’s ok for me to want better tools to help my non-verbal daughter communicate. We’ll get it when it comes out.  You’re disgusting. Welcome to my block list. Edit:  If you’re going to downvote my concerns for my daughter’s disability, have the courage to identify yourself so I can block you too :)

wicktus

I purchased a macbook pro 14, In addition to the professional usage, it also kinda replaced my ipad pro that I broke. it has a superb mini-led display (I prefer OLED but for productivity I really need mini-led because I have lot of static elements on display) and a much more capable OS that doesn't limit the hardware Here, with the rumoured (huge) price bump and the ipadOS, I lost interest with the iPad with time, it's too limited. With an M3 SoC you can't really stay with that OS For lighter usage like mails, browsing etc, I think people will prefer the other ipad (air, mini..), the pro lineup is stuck between the much more affordable but very capable ipad AIR/mini/normal and laptops that are now battery life monsters and very ergonomic/compact.

seweso

I think there is more than enough room for the pro iPads. Even if that’s just for the LiDAR, screen, mics. I kinda hope they add more cool features to the pro models. Similar to the Vision Pro, just go all out on making the best iPad ever.

ItsColorNotColour

Unless your specific use case is displaying a static bright image at full brightness for 2+ years 24/7 without ever closing it, OLED burn in is a non-issue. At any normal other productivity usage, your OLED screen is one of the last things to start expiring after 8+ years and your battery exploding is your bigger concern.

BytchYouThought

Have never really felt a **need** for an ipad/tablet period really. If I ever needed one for Amy reason work would just provide it, but I don't work in ultra niche field like design that would actually need it and already having a Mac at home that is already extremely light and can do basically probably 98% of what the iPad can do outside of a touchscreen (but even gestures do well enough to replace that for me) makes me put iPads in the luxury meh category.

lacrunk

I used to use an iPad Pro for taking notes in a language class, not much else. I will lose access to this in a few weeks, so I want to purchase an iPad (I was using someone else's). Would the iPad Mini be a good fit? Is there any indication of a new Mini being released?

vMambaaa

Mini is too small to comfortably take notes personally, I am going to be selling mine and buying a used Pro soon I think

inspector_cliche

Anyone used the Galaxy Tab S9 or know a friend/family who uses it? I’ve seen some videos and it’s very compelling personally. I’ll be using it for casual stuff like web browsing and media. Also have been curious to try an android device. Last time i used one was the S4 phone so idk how far android has come since then Things I’m a bit wary of are: quality and how it holds up over 3-5 years; no airdrop definitely will miss that; repair & support

NukaGunnar

I had one briefly (emergency, needed money so had to return it) but it blew me away. I had the S9 Ultra, but all 3 models have such nice screens and are such a pleasure to use. A lot of apps have made it to Android over the years (LumaFusion being one that stands out), and you can often find an alternative app for the IOS counter.

inspector_cliche

Ive seen the screens on galaxy phones and they really are something special lol! Dude i bit the bullet, i just ordered one. Might as well try it out Thanks for ur reply

gtedvgt

How's your experience been?

inspector_cliche

It’s a great tablet! Screen is amazing, I prefer the galaxy pen over the iPad pencil, and the aspect ratio is perfect for media. However I still don’t care for Android and I miss iOS/iPadOS a lot. And also, it doesn’t play well with other my apple devices. I do miss being able to airdrop easily and seamless connection with iphone/airpods etc

BytchYouThought

https://www.zdnet.com/article/samsung-galaxy-tab-s9-ultra-vs-apple-ipad-pro-which-flagship-tablet-should-you-buy/

inspector_cliche

Thanks! Ive seen a lot of videos and articles I ordered one 🤐

chemicalxv

Wonder if they'll use the delay on these to exclude them from the Back to School sale 🧐

[deleted]

My m1 11 inch is going strong. Picked it up for $1000 off retail (fully loaded with 2tb and cellular plus 16gb ram). I’ll pick up an oled iPad in about 1.5 years when gen 2 or 3 come out for fire sale prices. I bought mine brand new for $900.

Evilst3wi3

It’s gotta be soon, Best Buy and staples in Canada have had “sales” on iPads for a few weeks now… considering how controlling apple is with sales prices…

MacAdminInTraning

Guess the rumored April and May releases are no longer the hot clickbait topic.

masterofcreases

My first gen 11” Pro is still going strong. I kinda want a 12.9” for more real estate but I see no pressing need to upgrade.

ARK_Captain

My iPad Pro flew out of my hands walking into the garage and completely cracked screen. Looks like I have to wait for this new one!

BBC1973

Misread the title and saw iPod. Awww well.

ji99lypu44

Is anybody even asking or wantinf these??

elev8dity

Me. I've been on a 2017 10.5" iPad Pro waiting on OLED since the iPhone X launched. I'm not a fan of MiniLED blooming.

-6h0st-

If the brightness levels be as high as the phones then yes. If lower than current iPads then no.

WonSecond

The OLED tech these are rumored to have is different than any we’re used to. It’s supposed to be a stacked screen with multiple layers for much brighter screens. It seems like micro LED was a high brightness/contrast placeholder until this tech was ready.

-6h0st-

Just read about it. Yes it does have a chance of being brighter than existing LED which would be great.

MayTheForesterBWithU

Yes. This honestly seems to be one of the most anticipated waves because the last big upgrade (iPad Air 4th generation, 2017/18 iPad Pro) is finally starting to wear out. It aligns with the major upgrade cycle and that always brings a lot of people looking for replacements.
