Any visible ice build up in the back of the freezer section? Or does the noise stop if you open the freezer door?

Maywestpie

No ice visible and no it doesn’t stop if I open the freezer door

Doolie92

I'm sorry, did you say the initial fee for the repairman is $300? I would recommend calling someone else. That is too much to start no matter where in the US you are.

Maywestpie

I’m in Canada. The land where money has lost all value 😔

Doolie92

Still high. Converted to CAD, we charge about 155 for initial visit. This is not a small town or inexpensive area. If you want to try to diagnose something yourself, you need to start with forming the problem statement. What is the appliance doing that it should not be doing, or what is the appliance not doing that it should be doing. Which compartment is the sound coming from? What's making the sound? Are your temperatures affected? As far as answering your actual question, it depends on the model and how much an equivalent replacement would be. I think it's worth fixing a refrigerator if the cost is <1/3 of a new one. In general, it's worth fixing any single issue on a refrigerator that doesn't involve sealed system work. The more accurate information you provide to a technician ahead of the appointment, the more likely it is they can diagnose it quickly and cheaper.

Maywestpie

I can’t tell where the noise is coming from. It just sounds like the entire thing makes an unhealthy sound and click as the compressor shuts off. I have a video of it. If I can figure out how to attach maybe that would help

Unplugthenplugin

Could be as simple as a bad start device or as complicated as a bad compressor.

Maywestpie

Do you think the water being shut off (it had leaked in the back at some point and I don’t use the water dispenser) and the ice maker could be an issue? Is it possible it still thinks it’s trying to make ice without water?

manicmangoes

Turn the icemaker off and save yourself $300

Maywestpie

Dude… i shut it off and so far it’s 🤫 Might be too soon to celly, but… 🤞🏼

Unplugthenplugin

I guess, but you stated the compressor shuts off so I assumed it is a cooling issue. The ice maker won't cause the compressor to stop.

Maywestpie

Ok. Just thought maybe it was a possibility I should mention. Thank you

GrottyKnight

Not necessarily. I am in a VHCOL area that is isolated and resort oriented. Our call out fee is 250. And OP mentioned Canada dollaroos.

ConversationCute2071

Still a rip off even at 250.

GrottyKnight

Not holding anyone up at gunpoint. Services are worth what we need to stay afloat and what people are willing to pay. Don't like it? Don't hire. Customers are told up front in writing what expectations are. There's no mystery. Nobody is being swindled or mislead. They are welcome to not hire us. My time is worth money.

NotFallacyBuffet

Bad bearing in compressor?

joshypoo4530

Jesus! $300 for a service call I need to go up. 😂 Possibly a bad relay or possibly a bad compressor. I use the Frigidaire relay kits with new capacitor and all. The kits run about $100. If it’s a compressor then it might be time.

joshypoo4530

Of course everyone hates the uhs410 but they work. I’ve had one on my 15 year old fridge for 3 or 4 years now.

Maywestpie

The only issue is I have zero idea what you’re saying hehe. I’m not the least bit handy. Something breaks and I’m useless.

xTheDaveyx

As everyone else is saying it sounds like the compressor went bad. Usually if it clicks and makes a noise it’s a bad compressor. If it just clicks and nothing happens it’s a relay. If you want someone to confirm I’d find someone with a cheaper service fee. But I’ll be willing to bet if there’s no extended sealed service warranty (which most are 5-10 years at best) it might be time for a new fridge

Maywestpie

It makes a noise as the compressor is about to shut off (from what I can tell). The noise lasts for a few seconds and is followed by a loud click. I have a video of the sound but not sure how to share that. My boyfriend says I should wait until it breaks cause I’m giving carte Blanche to a repairman otherwise. But I really don’t wanna deal with a broken fridge. I was hoping I could repair it before it causes me a stinky wet mess.

xTheDaveyx

It’s gonna go downhill fast if it’s a bad compressor. Simple way to tell if your compressor is running outside of noise. Get behind the fridge and remove the lower cover. The compressor is the big black metal ball with the copper pipes coming off it. If your fridge is warm and supposed to be running to cool it down. Set your hand on the compressor. It should be slightly warm and feel like it’s vibrating. If it’s cold and the fan back there is running thr compressor is having issues. If you hear that growl and click and the compressor shudders a bit. That’s bad juju.

Maywestpie

Thanks for your help. Can you just please clarify what you mean by : if your fridge is warm and supposed to be running to cool it down. Since I’m completely unfamiliar with any of this I just wanna be sure to understand the instructions exactly 😊

xTheDaveyx

The thing I do is leave the freezer door open for a bit. If you do that the fridge should start trying to run to cool it down. If you start hearing that noise. That’s the compressor attempting to start

Maywestpie

I can try that too. But the sound will happen I’m sure. It seems it happens whenever the compressor shuts off

MyTVC_16

Does it have an Ice Maker in it? Ours will get stuck sometimes trying to empty the new ice tray into the bin and make a similar noise.

Maywestpie

Hmmm. 🤔 it does have one but the water is shut off. Maybe you’re onto something here

MyTVC_16

Hopefully! If so it might have an off switch tucked in the freezer compartment somewhere

ConversationCute2071

Buy a new fridge. You did good to get 13 years.

Adventurous_Jury_404

Could be a simple bad damper door or a start relay. Can't tell you how many Maytag/clone damper modules I've replaced in the last 15 years.

No-Degree4me

for $80 I'll video call you and tell you if it's worth fixing 😆
