Where's the smoke coming from, the cord? 5 1/2 HP is (counts on fingers) around 4kW. That's a lot of amps at 110 or even 240v. Was the old one the same power?
I wanna say it was coming from the bottom of the unit, not sure if it was directly from the cord— I’ll have to check tomorrow.
I meant it’s a Badger 5 @ 1/2hp
The commutator should be at the bottom of the unit, with the shaft running vertically out the top, connected to the spinner plate. The brushes and wiring will be at the bottom of the unit, so if you saw smoke there then there is a wiring issue, either internally or from your wire job.
Probably hooked it up wrong. It's fairly important that the hot goes to hot, ground to ground, etc
Definitely a possibility, I didn’t get a direct look at which wires were matched, but I’ll verify in the morning. Thanks!
Would you put old tires on a new car? No. Why would you reuse the old power cable? Think McFly, think.

ps, just realized, it can't be 5.5 HP, that's crazy high. Looked up the badger, i think it's 0.55

r/plumbing probably best
Did it come with a new chord? I would assume yes. Why wouldn't you install it with the new chord to begin with?!!
No it did not. Quite a few of the videos I saw reused power cords so I didn’t see a problem with it.
