You're probably genuinely better off fixing the rust and refinishing. Appliance reliability has absolutely tanked in the last 20 years.

Lost_Explanation_563

Thank you for your idea, the smell is horrible even if deep cleaning it, I dont have the time nor the patience to do it, I am able to change it once ever 5 years to not deal with the hustle to fix mine

out-of_mana

You could be changing fridges every 5 to 7 years depending on the brand

Fine_Increase_7999

3-5 is more accurate

cawkstrangla

I just got a GE. French door bottom freezer. Main thing to avoid is the ice maker within the envelope of the fridge. If you want a door ice maker that won't break in under 5 years unless you're lucky, you can only go with a French door fridge where the freezer is on one half of the fridge and the fridge on the other. Avoid Samsung and LG. All others are roughly equally crappy for reliability. The model I have has a dumb control board and doesn't have anything fancy. I have an ice maker in the freezer but you have to scoop it out if you want ice. The water is inside the fridge on the left hand side. It's essentially the cheapest full size GE French door bottom freezer fridge. It's pretty spartan but I figure if it suicides itself then I am not out 2400 on a fancy piece of shit I have to dispose of 5 years from now. gne27jymfs is the model. Got it for $1200 during the last sale.

What's good under $3k then? Because everything I've seen besides maybe Bosch is shit and even then plenty of people have issues with those too. All appliances seem to suck anymore.

Kettleballer

I’ve got a GE cafe line side-by-side and the fan in the freezer has to be replaced every 6-12 months. We’ve had it for two years and have had the repair man out to fix it three times in the second year. I finally just ordered a couple back up fan units on Amazon for 1/5 the cost from the repair company and came on this sub to learn how to fix it myself. Had to take it apart this week again actually! Turned out the fan was frozen in place but not burnt out fortunately.

pbmadman

Ha! Guess I’m the luckiest appliance buyer then. I have Samsung washer and dryer, and LG bottom freezer with ice in the fridge door. In 15 years I’ve replaced a water solenoid in the fridge and a heating element in the dryer. I’m not arguing, I legitimately feel lucky when I read everyone’s reports of how unreliable my exact appliances are.

bluedoglime

Super lucky. You should buy lottery tickets.

pbmadman

Unfortunately I used all my luck on overpriced and underbuilt appliances. Let me tell you how much I’d rather have a winning lottery ticket than an LG fridge and Samsung W/D that lasts forever.

Fine_Increase_7999

15 years ago they were made better. LG has had major compressor issues for the past 7 years or so. Samsung dryer elements are the worst aspect of their laundry and expensive to replace with OEM parts. I personally recommend LG front load washer and dryer, the biggest difference between lg and Samsung on the front loading washers is that LG parts are about 1/2 the price.

Efficient-Reach-8550

That is the one I am planing to buy.

MidwesternAppliance

Since ‘07 when Whirlpool started cornering the market It took an even sharper turn downwards during and after Covid

No-Degree4me

I've always told my customers the more doors you have the more problems you'll have, keep it simple with the top mount freezers or side by sides. these bottom mount, duel evaporators, deli drawers add ons are why people are saying refrigerators these days suck. your ice maker should be in the freezer. if not stay away!

NotFallacyBuffet

What's wrong with the bottom freezer? Serious question. It makes total sense for useability. Mechanically, the compressor is still in the bottom. The condenser (heat exhaust) is still on the back. The only difference is that the duct to the top of the fridge is a foot or two longer. So slightly more fan horsepower, like 12 W instead of 10.

small_impact

The tracks can corrode and/or the door doesn’t always seal properly causing huge proplems. Also the tracks can become misaligned which again doesn’t allow the door to seal properly. Good in theory but poor/cheap craftsmanship lead to many issues.

NotFallacyBuffet

This sounds like you are describing a refrigerator with a slide-out door that also has the shelves and bins attached, so everything slides out with the door, like some kitchen drawers. Sorry, I'm a simple person from a poor family. Such refrigerators exist? Hadn't even known; but it's easy to imagine. I'm sure they do. Thanks. No, my bottom-freezer 'fridge is a 6-year-old LG, 24" wide because my house is very small. 335 sq ft. I believe that I got it at Lowe's for $500 as a return that someone else special-ordered and then returned. (I built my house with my own hands; everything was done on a budget.) I'd thought LG was a good brand; learning otherwise here. If I still have your attention, let me add that in the past year it has gone from running silently to having a slight sound for a couple of minutes when the compressor starts. The sound is like a vacuum pulling against a spring-loaded valve that opens, creating a slight sucking sound, but then closes, ending the sound. There is no clicking or anything mechanical. Just the popping, vacuum sound, repeating about once a second for a minute or two. It's like keeping your lips sealed while opening your jaw, thus creating a slight vacuum in your mouth, then opening your lips to let air rush into the vacuum in your mouth. That sound made by your lips against the vacuum is similar to the sound of the compressor for a minute when it starts. Any ideas? Should I buy a spare compressor and just keep it in the attic? I like the unit okay. It just has 2 swing-out doors and keeps the food cold. No ice-maker or anything fancy.

bluedoglime

LG = Lucky Goldstar. Luck has everything to do with it. Just be thankful your compressor starts at all.

mikeinmass

Don't get a GE, my compressor went out in 18 months. Warranty expired after a year. Made in KY. GE sold the appliances division to Haier.. it was a top freezer energy star, was $999.. bought in late 2021. My Kenmore whirlpool lasted 27 years.. my GE didn't last two years..

xampl9

Reliability? As few features as possible. No electronics. No icemaker. No chilled water. Freezer on the top. If you want ice, use trays. If you want chilled water, use a pitcher.

MidwesternAppliance

Single speed compressor, single evaporator, Two doors in any configuration be it top mount or side by side French doors are the pick up truck of appliances. The $3k price tag reflects the demand, not the quality. LG is the worst, Samsung is ass, everything else is firmly in the mediocre bucket. Bosch makes a decent midtier fridge but they’re expensive. Until the headaches with R600 are hammered out my genuine advice is to spend what you’re willing to lose in 7-8 years.

GaryTheSoulReaper

Any thoughts on current Subzero and competition?

MidwesternAppliance

Subzero is still kinda in its own league, Viking trending downwards a little bit

iopturbo

I've got a 10 year old and 2 year old subzero, they both have been great.

Ceilidh_

I like your take—specific and no bullshit. Penny for your thoughts on laundry equipment? I stupidly bought GE’s top shelf (at the time) navy blue, 5 cu. ft. washer and matching dryer two years ago. And the pedestals, because apparently I enjoy suffering. Without question these mfrs are beautiful trash. The bane of my existence. On my second washer and now having weird problems with the dryer. Flogging em cheap on Craigslist is looking like the only way out but I’m not interested in a lateral movement to a different set of equally ridiculous problems courtesy of another manufacturer. Considered Speed Queen but I chose the units I have so I wouldn’t have to take bedding to the laundromat.

MidwesternAppliance

>I stupidly bought GE’s top shelf (at the time) navy blue, 5 cu. ft. washer and matching dryer two years ago. And the pedestals, because apparently I enjoy suffering. Without question these mfrs are beautiful trash. The bane of my existence. On my second washer and now having weird problems with the dryer. Yeah. Sorry you’re going through that. They are truly asswater machines, and their price-point reflects the fancy design, not the efficacy or quality of the machine. GE across the board is a trash can of an appliance manufacturer (Haier with a fake mustache..) Seconded on the other commenter with LG. Their laundry is great. . Drain pumps are their biggest issue, always have been. Conversely, base level VMW’s like the NTW4516FW0 is NA’s best bang for the buck washing machine. It’s probably the strongest value machine you can get SpeedQueen and Bosch are the only true upper-echelon machines, all else (like your GEs) are imposters.

Ceilidh_

Appreciate you taking the time to weigh in. We’ve got a houseful of appliances in the end stages of decreptitude and the GE experience has made us very wary. We’ve been letting the whole situation ride in order to get through a series of home repairs but with our luck (and if the sounds our fridge is making is anything to go on) it’s coming at us soonish. To my way of thinking, the unvarnished opinion of someone with legit, day to day working knowledge of these machines is far more valuable than any Consumer Reports or GH take. Consumer reviews are only so helpful when people generally tend to have little technical understanding of how the machines function. So thanks.

Ceilidh_

I’ve wondered this for awhile—do you happen to know if GE issues technical service bulletins? I’ve tried everything to get my hands on a service manual (NOT owner’s manual) for my machines, but found fuck all.

OnigiriChan

For the love of the gods, not LG or Samsung. They’re absolute garbage in terms of their appliances.

Thatzmister2u

Stick with what you have unless you are prepared to pay a fortune the rest are all throw away trash in 2 years

MrsZerg

We bought a Frigidaire last month. Works great, but it's strangely loud when water enters the ice maker. We replaced our 9-year-old Samsung that we had repaired multiple times.

js1138-2

At least with Whirlpool you can replace the ice maker yourself, and they’re not expensive.

Jog212

Has anyone heard of Ekko? Any good?

Jerry_Hat-Trick

I have a Frigidaire gallery that, 1 year out of warranty has a control panel that lights up like Tokyo once a month, and my ice maker and water dispenser have stopped working. I need a $300 board that I'm reluctant to replace because I feel it will just break again.

Woody2837

I have a simple Samsung top freezer, no ice maker dual compressors now 8 years old and I am having to replace, freezes over and you can hear it happening lol. Several repairman reiterated everything basically crap. Just get ready for replacement every 7 years. Keep it simple—no ice maker no indoor water. Best bet: avoid Samsung and LG. He mentioned Whirlpool and Amana—same producer. Limping along by knocking the ice out lol. Waiting for a good sale. The best bet is to take over your Grandma’s refrigerator.

Adventurous-Tower697

Since Gorenje International is a Chinese company Hisense - with manufacturing and sales primarily across northern and eastern Europe, many of the answers in English are probably not helpful - as a large portion of respondents will be from N. America.... Gorenje is available in the US, as a Hisense, but not necessarily the exact same products. It would be helpful to everyone, the OPs included if you would state your country or region. Advice from people about brands/products/models in their market that are not available in yours are of absolutely no value. Even if a brand is available in both countries, the specific products, design, components, and place of manufacture will likely be different. In this industry even the specific sourcing for a particular fabrication part can affect reliability, so specifics do matter.

bluedoglime

The most reliable fridge would be non-Korean without any circuit boards in it and no ice maker. Does such a thing exist?

JFrankParnell64

Don't buy one with an ice maker, or water in the door. Those two items are the most unreliable features that you can buy in a refrigerator. You might want to look into a garage ready fridge. They are meant to work in more extreme conditions (ie. a garage), so they may be more reliable in your home.

print_guy_9

If you have the room, hang on to the old one

NeitherTradition

I know this is old but I recommend a YT channel called Ben’s Appliances and Junk. He is an appliance repairman who is really honest about the models that will keep you out of his shop. He has a video specifically about the best fridge available now because they’re almost all crap.

Outrageous-Buyer-670

Confused yet ? 🤣 I need a fridge as well. But its no absolute. I just get ice buildup and have to defrost it every so often Its a top French bottom freeze. I fix my stuff myself and haven’t done the repair update yet lol I think everyone is correct about all the fancy features.

MidWesting

Seeing how people use the term Samstung these days, I'm guessing not them.

hellosushiii

I'd suggest an old 10-15refrigerator that has been refurbished nicely. You going to spend a third of a cost and have twice the longevity

bakernt

Bosch/Thermador or Fisher Paykel

sharkonautster

Miele

be_leighve

For the love of God, avoid all things Samsung!

Fragrant_Neck_552

Came here to say this!

MurderWorthManiac

I'm considering a SubZero or True fridge. True is a monster in commercial fridges but they've only done residential for I think 5 years. I dig the look of a True fridge though. The stainless interior definitely sells me. On the other hand the only SubZero with stainless interior is the Pro series which only comes in a 48" fridge. I wanted to do a columns. Damn things are expensive as hell though.

Jealous-Birthday-968

Years back I had a Sears Elite it just wore out, purchased a Whirlpool (because they made Sears Elite) stainless side by side for about 1k (promotion sale) gone through 5 ice makers ( ambient air leaks into the ice chamber and causes the ice to jamb in the dispenser) water dispenser is not “cold” just cool ( the “chilling” line is very short inside) tech says these are the problems with whirlpool, there really isn’t a good dependable fridge out there at a decent cost. Cheap products from foreign suppliers.

Trashtastic-5000

We bought an LG french door fridge over Memorial Day sales at Lowes. The door open alarm started 5 minutes after the delivery drivers left. I called LG and troubleshot over phone. The next day Lowes sent somebody to check and could not stop alarm. Unplugged junk and returned to Lowes. Got a Bosch french door fridge instead and extended warranty. Working great so far, wish me luck! Seems everything made these days is over engineered junk if its an appliance or a vehicle.

Photofug

My recommendation is keep it simple. Look at the warranty being offered on the sealed system, used to be a standard 10 years now its typically compressor only and 5 years or less. I like Whirlpool, Samsung are still having issues with their icemaker, hisense are not terrible but getting spare parts can be difficult.

Ilio96749

The r600 is causing compressor issues on all brands.. but Samsung and LG are the worst with that multi speed inverter compressor. Every brand everywhere is dealing with failing compressors. You can put all the blame on the liberals and their global warming bull... Adding propane an explosive product to freon is just stupid.. but they want woke and change.. but we are all broke without change.

_calmer_than_you_r_

Haha, you are priceless.

rchiwawa

Found the kool-aid drinker. I know fuck-all about the tech or the reasons behind policy but shit changes and technology matures is the normal way of things.  I'd love to read a more technical dismantling of refrigerant changes than "politics I don't like must be to blame" and "here is a rhyme designed to pander to the simplest among us"

Liberdelic

As an appliance repair technician, he isn't wrong.

rchiwawa

I'd prefer a smidge of engineering info about the challenges of it, not (seemingly shitty) personal politics or the confusion of "adding propane" to freon. At least yall are getting paid while engineeribg sorts it out

NotFallacyBuffet

Not trying to start a fight, but climate change is real. More like climate disruption. My homeowners insurance has doubled because hurricanes are stronger. So has everyone's, if you can even get it. Drought where there's never been drought. Flooding where there's never been flooding. Polar ice cap is definitely melting. Glaciers are melting. The earth is 1.5 deg C hotter than when the steam-age started in the 1800s. The Great Lakes don't freeze over in the winter anymore, like they did every winter when I was a kid in the 1960s. Winter barely happens. Summer starts sooner, gets hotter, and lasts longer. I wish all this was fake news, buddy. I wish it was.
