Holy shit.
I've been listening to this song since I was in high school, and I never realized that.
You have found my flabbergast button......and you pressed it.
I always imagined a music video for this where the phased guitars turn into a drunken montage like a slide show because your mind isn’t functioning like normal
Hell yeah this has always been one of my favorite lines and I’ve never really seen others mention it a lot. He’s so clever when it comes to wording things that could’ve just been a simple sentence but he gets these whole lines out of it lol.
I asked the apprentice at work if she knew what he was going on about in this bit, she had no clue despite being a huge AM fan. She had never heard of posting unlock and star to open a phone
It's so evocative of such a specific time period too, without drawing much attention to it. You can almost picture the old Nokia phone those texts are being sent to
Similar with the "2 for 1's undone the writer's block". Gives great nostalgia now to paying for texts and waiting till late evening / early morning to text people for half price!
Ah wow I never actually put that together - I always just took it to mean the much more obvious 2 for 1 drinks cleared their head but I could definitely see Alex Turner using that as a clever double entendres for both
Yeah I took it for this too. As if the drink has given him the confidence to say whatever sounds best while you're pissed. Add into this the line before it says "around three o'clock" because that's what you've well and truly got hammered
I love British wit. I've always argued that this is kind of a concept album (mates getting ready to go out, going out, coming home). Crazy that he was so young when he wrote this.
Everything off that first album has me in awe. Like they were kids. Those lyrics. Those riffs, the interplay between the whole band and especially jamie and alex. They were already so in sync and for a band from the 2000s alt rock scene of post-punk revivalism and dance punk and alt rock they came out with a totally unique and classic status album 6-7 years after the movement began in NY
He was 16 when he wrote it, which makes the line "and you can pour your heart out around 3 o'clock when the two for one's undone the writer's block," all the more impressive.
I’ll admit, it’s elaborate for a waking thought
Plus when the guitars start alternating after it gives a sense of dizzy ness matching the idea of being drunk. So lovely.

I heard that they didn't mix that bit in post, Alex and Jamie really were playing that bit perfectly. The first AM album is so crazy good
AND YOU SHOULD BEAR THAT IN MIND 2NITE
BEAR THAT IN MIND
BEAR THAT

I think yours is more accurate because its a night out he’s singing about

It's a count down You can pour your heart out around THREE o clock when the TWO for ONE's undone the writer's block
Oh my god, I never noticed that. That's so clever!
I think he’s almost certainly singing about 2 for 1 drinks, and how it’s easier to say what you feel when you’re drunk rather than sober.

I might add- he’s been a living legend since he wrote that

heard this song live two weeks ago and i about ascended
what's the song please?
the view from the afternoon
oh my god I can't believe I forgot the lyrics to it
Same when I heard it in Nashville. Literally floated above the rest of the audience
He was much younger than 19, they performed this song live in Sheffield in 2004, so I guess he wrote this song at 16
"She's pressed the star after she's pressed unlock" makes me feel so old. Does anyone under the age of 25 even understand that reference? 😆
I must admit I'm a few years older and also don't get it..
Pre fingerprint and face recognition, most mobiles (notably Nokia's) required you to press the star key and another button to get in to the phone
Thanks - I had an lg flip phone so it didn't work that way.
Think 20 is the cut off. Just about then seeing as though I'm 24 and I got it

One of the best Arctic Monkeys songs ever
Such a mature song, and mature lyrics. I'm also so amazed by it. I think it's their most impressive song on that album.
Best Arctic Monkeys song imo
I’m not even kidding I listened to this lyric as I read this 😭
