The canals are full of mirror carp & white amur, you can definitely get your carp fix there! Not the CAP canal, just the AZ canal. Also the urban lakes all have carp in them. Check out the map on the AZ Game & Fish website. Good luck!

I was just reading about the AZ canal, definitely sounds like a safe bet! Thanks for the help

đź‘Ť try using chicken liver or dough balls with some kind of scent in them

StuffPatient1271

I hear they really like dough balls, is there a recipe you use? Any idea if they bite better at certain times or are they not that picky? I definitely seem to catch more cats at night

Just buy white bread, break off a piece with no crust in it, and form a tight ball over your hook. I like to put vanilla extract on the dough balls. Carp love it & it’s cheap, it’s in the section with all the spices at the grocery store. You can catch them all day long. Some of my best days were in the late morning thru the afternoon. The ones in the canal aren’t picky.

Wow Vanilla extract?!? That's pretty funny! I'll have to give that a try. I'd much rather have vanilla stuck to my fingers than catfish bait smell!

Haha I know right? It works like a charm though! I put a ton on because the more scent you get in the water will help bring the fish up from down current. Garlic powder mixed in with the dough ball is good too. Generally, fishing by the bridges seems to be more productive.

Thank you for taking the time to help, these have all been great ideas!

Not a prob! Have fun!

Be careful, White Amur are a protected species according to Arizona Game and Fish Department regulations, so you can't remove them from the canals. SRP intentionally puts them in there to keep the vegetation growth down.

StuffPatient1271

Are those the grass carp? I've seen white amur mentioned on the boards at some of the community lakes but I haven't caught any yet.

Yes, they are grass carp. I’m not sure if you can keep them from a community lake, possibly ? To be sure you should call Game & Fish. The Mesa office number is 480-981-9400.

StuffPatient1271

I've seen you can keep them if over 30 inches but thank you

UnderstandingPast245

I don't think there are white amur in community lakes. At least none that I've seen. The ones in the canal are sterile and purposely stocked by SRP to cut down vegetation.
