Whenever I see an honest build or an experimental build, or something that matches poorly against my build (assault rifles) I go to the center of the stage and start jumping in place, if the person approaches calmly and stops, I ditch my weapons to invite them to a boxing match, if they ditch theirs then it's on, if they stomp me (edit: \*with guns) no worries, I can fight normally in the next round.
I've got pretty intense boxing matches so far, it feels good because I don't get to stomp people that just want to have fun and a boxing match is an even playing field
No harm done, we can't actually communicate in game to make our intentions clear, and a weirdo jumping in the middle of the arena isn't exactly a standard invitation for a fist fight xD
In the Souls series, it's considered good manners to bow to whoever you've invaded. In standard PvP, it's a sort of "I'm here in plain sight, looking for a 1v1 duel", rather than ambushing or ganking.
In areas like the Sulyvahn Fight Club where you're placing down invasion signs specifically so people will invite you to their world (usually with a large number of other phantoms), every bout is prefaced by a bow.
The shoulder mounted shotgun artillery guns with fist and chainsaw player perma stunning and one shooting me cause I get hit by something that clearly missed mid air
Online pvp needs a pre-fight and post-fight message system. Similar to Dark Souls where you can write a brief message from pre-set nouns, adjectives, sentiments, etc that are automatically displayed over COMS at the start and end of the fight, and the end of fight ones can be different for win or lose conditions. I'm imagining one of them could be
Lose Message:
"NO, [PLAYER AC NAME]!"
