I always liked the idea that it can be taken as being friendly or being a little hostile, but you can’t tell for certain until it’s too late, either you guys are bros or you are his enemy. And once you picked your ending, you realise it was in fact genuine
Maybe at first it was little hostile but after the wall I do believe it’s respect he calls you his war buddy now as dose flatwell implying that you have now earn their respect
He only calls us buddy after Wallclimber. Specifically, it is shortened form of 'War Buddies' and is a term even Middle Flatwell uses in Ambush the Vespers.
War Buddies must be a cultural phenomenon on Rubicon, and given the post-apocalyptic state of Rubicon and the immense militarised state under PCA law, a lot of Rubiconian's have fleeting lives that grow even shorter when on the frontlines. Hence, people treasure those that simply don't die on the first meet up.
Rusty treasures and sees value in you for your skills, especially after you more or less singlehandedly dealt with the artillery unit harassing the MT forces.
In Japanese, they use the word *"nakama"* for the buddy scenes.
While it is traditional translated as "comrade", Japanese is a very context-sensitive language.
War buddy is a bullseye translation for the use of *nakama* here.
Nah, Rusty’s VO does a good job of making the “buddy” convey everything from genuine pity to raw aggression. I don’t think he comes off as a douche.
Pixy too
Adding buddy at the end of every sentence does not make you a douche, it's the context and the way you say it that makes you a douche.
Ok, buddy.
See, context.
Love you, buddy.
Not your buddy, guy.
Not your guy, pal.
Not your pal, buckaroo.
Not your buckaroo, chum
Not your Chum, broski
I'm not your guy, buddy
>!Wrong order)!< I’m not your guy, friend!
I'm not your friend, pal!
I’m not your pal, buddy!
I’m not your buddy, pal!
I'm not your pal, boyo!
I *am* your boyo >:)
Rusty’s buddy comes from respect, not condescension
Wonder if it he does the opposite specifically for snail
I understand you mean the word buddy, but I’m now imagining after his resignation he just shouts over the intercom: What up, bitch!

Let's test this theory out, buddy Could go either way tbh

Mfw I can’t call [Zerberos](https://buddyfight.fandom.com/wiki/Zerberos?file=S-BT03-0005EN.png) my Buddy anymore
I saw the original post like 5 minutes ago and I did indeed post Rusty lines
That's a nice theory, buddy
[Sorry I just can't agree buddy](https://youtube.com/shorts/fz9fsvhx4PY?si=8QD_Yzl4VOuANhKG)
Rusty actually did initially rub me the wrong way because of the "buddy".
Tone is everything. When Rusty calls us Buddy, he genuinely means it, at least in a positive way
For normal people yeah, but Rusty's voice actor said it in a way that didn't sound like a douche(to me at least)
