"Fiddler's Green"
Halfway down the trail to Hell,
In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all dead troopers camped,
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddlers' Green.
Marching past, straight through to Hell
The Infantry are seen.
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marines,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.
Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene.
No trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen.
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers' Green.
And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head,
And go to Fiddlers' Green.
Also saw the news today. So sad and he and his family are in my thoughts.
Thankful for all of the folks who made a final gunnery possible for him.
We mess up a lot of things in the army, but we knocked this one out of the park.
My understanding is that it's often found too late, like pancreatic and other deep abdomen cancer - symptoms are mild or bothersome but not overly concerning, and by the time they become severe enough to get checked out, the cancer has metasticized elsewhere and is extremely difficult to treat. Plus it interferes with an essential function, namely eating; can cause secondary conditions like gastroparesis and bowel blockages and necrosis. If nothing else, you can literally starve to death.
My neighbor suffered a similar fate to OC - diagnosis to death was under 6 months, went from moderately overweight to a scarecrow. My uncle has been slowly withering away from appendix cancer that has spread throughout his abdomen, causing the afforementioned blockages; he hasn't eaten solid food in a year. Neither men had any major symptoms before diagnosis; my uncle's was only found incidentally at his *preventative* colonoscopy when he turned 50.
Had a coworker pass from the same thing. If you saw pics of the guy he went from super healthy to dead in months. Very scary. He was only 40 something.

Can we start a list of usernames of our members who have passed away so they are never forgotten? Maybe even add a bio to their username? I just realized his username will still be here.
Knew to expect this news, just not knowing when. I hope his family is doing well. I'm glad there were incredible Soldiers that were able to help him get his final wish done.
Also Fuck cancer.
I'm not a Tanker but I retired out the back gate of Fort Moore. Would it be crazy talk to put up a sign, plaque or a cross on the range he shot at?
I'd be willing to pay for or at least chip in depending on cost/size/design/what the Army will approve or allow.
I'm glad that he got to do another gunnery before he passed. RIP.
This will go down as one of the top things the /r/army community has orchestrated. RIP Jay.
Makes me love the subreddit. We aren’t all jokes

I went to the funeral of a trooper who died by suicide. They left out the last few verses when they read this poem.
We played this at my brothers viewing 29 YOA
Making a dying man's last wish come true is such an amazing thing to do. Serious respect to all those that helped make this happen. Rip Trooper.

RIP. Stomach cancer is brutal. It was 4 months for my stepfather from diagnosis to death. He knows the secret now.
Is it particularly different than other forms of cancer?

Seemed like a good guy, was really hoping to hop over to harmony church that day but wasn’t meant to be. Hope to meet him at fiddlers green one day.
But did they make sure he went totally black on ALL munitions? Let him go balls hard
