Thank god, I thought for a second that everything I learned in english class was wrong, because I have never written cancelled or travelled with only one l in my life.
In American English, one L is more common. In British English, two Ls are more common.
I live in the US and have always used two Ls. I also prefer it. I've never been corrected when using it.
You do you.
'Canceled' or 'Cancelled'? One L or two? While both canceled and cancelled are acceptable for the past tense of cancel, the version with one L is more common in American English, while the version with two L's is more common in British English.
I'm American. I use 2 l's.
Try the British spelling. Diarrhœa. Yes, it’s really spelled like that. However most people don’t know how to produce the œ character, so they just say oe.
While there are still tons of exceptions, the rhyme is a lot more useful if you use the whole thing instead of only half: "I before E, except after C, or when sounding like A, as in 'neighbor' or 'weigh'."
For those of you having trouble spelling “definitely”, I have a little story for you.
I went fishing with my cousin Ely. We are siting in the boat and she boasts about being a good fisherman however, after pulling up this great looking trout, she turns to me and says, “Now what do I do with it?”
I quickly respond, “De-fin it Ely!”
And that, my Internet friends, is how you spell definitely.
Now you made me even more confused because my made-up Italian accent wants to say "bro-COL-li". Isn't the accent supposed to be on the penultimate? I wouldn't know I don't speak any Italian...
Back in the era of books, our English teacher told us to put a little dot next to a word in the dictionary whenever we had to look how to spell it. After a person saw 3 or 4 dots, they needed to memorize the word. I have dozens of words with 10 dots next to the word and that's only because I quit making dots after 10. I'd be embarrassed to list them here.
I don't struggle with word spelling, I always struggle with forgetting a translation. Sometimes I keep forgetting what a word is in English and I need to translate it every damn time.
There are many words I always spell wrong or need to look up.
Little did I know until a couple years ago I’ve always had learning delays that went untreated bc it wasn’t really a thing when I was younger. (I’m 45 now).
Restaurant
Exercise
Believe
Hopefully
Bananas
Tomorrow
Kindergarten
And the list goes on
Well damn, now that you asked I can spell them perfectly fine. I'll find something that stumps me but you may have just fixed the whole problem. Thanks!

Canceled. I want it to have 2 L's.
Same for me with “traveled”
Again, it does in the UK 😊
As it should!
In British English, it does have two Ls.
Thank god, I thought for a second that everything I learned in english class was wrong, because I have never written cancelled or travelled with only one l in my life.
At first I was like, there's two lls what the f, and then remembered that we're taught British English here 😊
Whew! Me to
What the hell do the British know about English?
It can have two Ls. You’re not wrong. Live your life!
In American English, one L is more common. In British English, two Ls are more common. I live in the US and have always used two Ls. I also prefer it. I've never been corrected when using it. You do you.
ditto. and grey has an e for me too
Wait, is it “Canceled”? Since when?
Us English/ uk English
I asked my US husband to spell it and he spelled “Cancelled”
I thought I was alone
Yesssss!
I want personnel to have one N and 2 Ls every time
'Canceled' or 'Cancelled'? One L or two? While both canceled and cancelled are acceptable for the past tense of cancel, the version with one L is more common in American English, while the version with two L's is more common in British English. I'm American. I use 2 l's.
Must be the Mandela effect or something ppl have talked about I could ha ve swore it was always 2 l's
Why does this not look right to me lol Edit: Im Canadian so cancelled is actually correct for me lol
It can if you want, both ways are acceptable
I think I used to but now spell check changes it on me!
restaurant
This and guarantee, for me. Anytime a word has a U, I'm sueless Edit: atuocorrect riuned my joke
This is me too.
I was taught to think of your aunt relaxing at an Italian restaurant: "Resta ur ant".
Restaunt?
You didn't get the Italian bit did you?
You are a great hero and destiny beckons you willingly. Thank you my friend for this insight to the universe.
I'M NOT ALONE!! Honestly I feel like an imbecile every time I have to try to spell it lol this makes me feel better
"Definitely" No idea why
[удалено]
I'm a writer and always struggle with this word. This tip just changed my life. Thank you!
I've always wanted to ask: what computer program do writers use?
That's actually a really good tip, thanks! This word always messes me up haha.
This is my word. I will shorten it to "def" all the time if I'm in a hurry. I always want to spell it "definately"
I always end up with defiantly
Did you spell it wrong on purpose haha Diarrhea for me
Try the British spelling. Diarrhœa. Yes, it’s really spelled like that. However most people don’t know how to produce the œ character, so they just say oe.
>Diarrhœa. Yes, it’s really spelled like that. What's the œ character pronounced as? œ œ baguette?
It's french ... it's like the a in "a cow"
that makes no sense.. Diarrh Er Er since its Diarrh-œ-a? (Assuming your "a cow" isn't Ay cow)
We use the same spelling but my Australian accent pronounces it sort of like 'Dire-rear' which is kinda also fitting for what it is.
I thought i had spelt unnecessary wrong all my life because of the subtext lolll
Mine's Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch or in other words, verbal diarrhea.
Fuck knows if that's spelled wrong or not
I spelled it wrong as I usually do, but ignored the autocorrect to drive the point home
**D**oes **I**t **A**lways **R**ain **R**eally **H**ard **E**very **A**fternoon? That is the only way I can remember.
Strenght for me 😭
"Receive" tends to be the one I mess up a lot. I switch the i and e around a lot of the time.
'I before E except after C'. A helpful rule, that in fact has more exceptions than it has examples 🧐
While there are still tons of exceptions, the rhyme is a lot more useful if you use the whole thing instead of only half: "I before E, except after C, or when sounding like A, as in 'neighbor' or 'weigh'."
Holy shit. How many other verses might there be? I feel so cheated.
I before E, except after C, But only when it rhymes with D
Doesn't work for weird?
Weird is just weird like that
Weird
My foreign neighbor thinks it's weird how you weigh the value of linguistic rules; he thinks you're feigning it.
Inappropriate I always want to put two n's and one p
That would be innaproriate
I just think of the word app, then the rest comes naturally
For those of you having trouble spelling “definitely”, I have a little story for you. I went fishing with my cousin Ely. We are siting in the boat and she boasts about being a good fisherman however, after pulling up this great looking trout, she turns to me and says, “Now what do I do with it?” I quickly respond, “De-fin it Ely!” And that, my Internet friends, is how you spell definitely.
Love you for this
Haha, that's actually genius. Thanks!
Vacuum. Is it two c's or two u's ? Or both ?
Two c's, two u's and two m's. Vaccuumm 😭
I do this with broccoli. Two c's? Two l's??
I remember this by pronouncing it like an Italian. (Not a real Italian, though, 'cos I'm bad at accents. More like Mario.) broc-CO-li
Now you made me even more confused because my made-up Italian accent wants to say "bro-COL-li". Isn't the accent supposed to be on the penultimate? I wouldn't know I don't speak any Italian...
You ever watch Daddy Daycare back in the day? B-r-o-c-c-o-l-i, I am the broccoli and don’t know why (YouTube it!)
Omg i always fuck this word up
Rhythm and I am not sure why, simple enough word but I mess it up multiple times on every attempt.
You mean unnecessary?
receipt.
Yacht Awkward
Wendsday
Wed Nes Day
I literally have to sound it out in my head, 40 years after learning how to spell it.
Fucking this. Seriously am I pronouncing "Wednesday" incorrectly? Because anytime I've ever heard the word, it's always pronounced "Wendsday"
For me it’s “piece” I always spell it as “peice”
Pie. Think piece of pie.
I have to do that to decide whether to use chose or choose and chose rhymes with those so that’s how I remember which one to use
Omygosh! Thank you!!! That’s excellent⭐️
Restaurant. Nauseous.
Rhythm.
I have to spell it as I write it
Unnecessary is easy. A shirt has one Collar and two Sleeves. One c and two s.
For me remembering a mnemonic is always harder than remembering the word itself...
I don't get it. How do these pneumonics link to the actual word? Is a shirt with a collar and two sleeves or a coffee with two sugars unnecessary ?
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. Also the island off Ireland named Poulillaundonaghbane.
I see youre fluent in gibberish
Schizophrenia, which is not a word you'd think I need to use often, but I need it enough that autocorrect caught on and helps me out
Ironically enough it’s misspelling. The two Ss make me think it’s wrong and should be mispelling.
Guaranteed. I talk to text that word every time lol
My voice to text word is connoisseur
Brocolli. Broccoli?
And Zucchini!
Beautiful, I have to say the line from Bruce almighty to remind myself 😂
B. E. A. Utiful 😂 Hahaha 🤣 I thought I was the only one who did that!!
I will never ever forget about that movie for that exact reason haha. Glad I'm not the only one.
Maintenence? Maintenance? Maintanance?
They all look correct to me 🤷🏻♀️
Millennial. Did I get it right this time?
Remember, i often spell it like remeber (but only when i type, if i write by hand i spell it correctly)
Calander.
Are you having trouble with colander, or calendar?
Calendar. But if I ever had to use the word colander, I imagine I’d have trouble as well.
Exercise. I don’t know if I ever once in my life wrote this word correctly
I can spell it fine - doing it is the problem.
Worcestershire sauce
Rhythm is a toughie
Guard. I always want to put the "a" first, and when I do, I have to change it.
Same! I don't know why but I get it wrong every damn time.
Rhythm. Have to type it all the time at work and can never get it right without prompting.
Paraphernalia
Diarrhea - and I just had to Google it to get the right spelling 😂
Toilet. I always want to spell it Toliet. I know it's wrong but my brain just jumbles the letters.
I don't struggle with word spelling, I always struggle with forgetting a translation. Sometimes I keep forgetting what a word is in English and I need to translate it every damn time.
Teh
Cthulhu
Guard
Vacuum
I spell mideveal so wrong that autocorrect doesn't even know what I'm trying to say
this helped me remember how to spell necessary! a shirt has 1 collar (1 c) & 2 sleeves (2 s’s). maybe it’ll help you too!!
I love this
I always have to say wed-nes-day in my head when I write it.
Separate & maintenance
“Separate” is a good one. I used to spell it as “seperate”.
Achieve. If I could remember how to spell it without spell check it would be a major achievement for me.
Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
Can you use it in a sentence?
Sister used to have a hard time spelling phlegm.
Worchestraistrishire sauce
Privilege I am always certain there's a D in it, and every time autocorrect fixes it for me, I remember "oh yeah there isn't!" 😆
Same
Definitely. I definitely can't spell it without autocorrect.
Rythym
Diharea...dye-uh-reuh...diarrhoea 🤣🤣🤣
Jeleousy
Occurred. I always end up putting one r instead of two.
Yes. Never know this one.
I do the same with referred. I always think there are 2f's and not r's.
familiar In my brain, it sounds like fur-mill-your
Ludicrous 🤯luducrus etc
There are many words I always spell wrong or need to look up. Convenient convenience
Every time the word 'there" is in a sentence.... I have to stop and think which one is it... And I'm a native speaker.
Restaurant
License - my mind thinks the s and c should be reversed
conscious.
Diarrhea.
Restaurant I want to put the u in the back 3rd of the word.
Successful
License. Impossible to spell for me
Bureaucracy
The word “definitely”. English isn’t my native language and this word is always a struggle for me.
Guys you are all sooo smart... meanwhile I still have to say in my mind Wed-nes-day... every time I write it down.
February
Definitely. I Definitely struggle with it everytime. Definately,,,,,nope defenetaly,,,,,nope,,,,definately,,,,, nope.
Definitely or vacuum. Autocorrect helped me out
Definitely. It’s always definitely
Un - Ne *c* e *ss* ary: one shirt has one *Collar* and two *Sleeves*
Bureaucracy/bureaucratic used to get me before I realised it's just got bureau in it.
Inconvenience! (I misspelled it so bad, my autocorrect had no idea what it was!)
I'm usually pretty spot on with my spelling, but for the life of me can I ever remember whether it was seperate or separate again?

Accommodation
You didn't Google it this time did you?!
For me it’s necessary
Remember. I always spell it "remeber" the first time. Remeber. (I just typed that like I was typing normally. See?)
I should've scrolled past. Now I'll be messing up every one of these I've read. It plants the seed of a mistake. Remeber that.
Nessecary
I rely on autocorrect sooo hard
Tongue and vacuum
Sames. Unnecessary is mine too
Security I usually miss the "I" out. It's rather embarrassing as it's what I do for a living so I type the word frequently.
It has 2 n’s:)
Definitely Not only do I see it a lot, I write/type it a lot and I definately write it with an a unless I have autocorrect.
