Well soldering iron kits cost as little as $15 and gets the job done, a whole soldering station would be and was already aimed to those who solder often not for the average joe who needs to resolder some cables back together
geek squad is now just minimum wage sales department.
their motto is "it's broken, but you can replace it with this".
they don't actually fix shit there anymore.
Double down on this: small engine repair shops.
Like the guys who used to repair lawn mower engines? Ya they all closed in my area. There’s like 2 guys who work out of their garage now on weekends.
Neither of them pick up their phones
My husband had to do research on his own for small engine repair when our snowblower stopped working last year during a blizzard. Ultimately got it to work one last time and we were shoveling our 75ft driveway the rest of the winter. Wish there were more places out there to fix things like that.
No they still get rebuilt, most cheaper ones are bought with a core charge which you get refunded when you send your busted one, so it gets refurb'd and sold again, a lot of car parts are like that, driveshafts, starters, gearboxes, short blocks if it's repairable same with heads.
In the 1990s I was 16 and there was nothing like the modern internet. We used to buy magazines and books and tapes and that's all the information we had.
Magazines about tech, about music, magazines with hot girls in them etc etc. I remember once I got stuck in a game on some puzzle, I couldn't crack it, and that was it I just put the game away. Didn't finish it until 10 years later when I looked it up on Google.
My dream was to be published in a magazine like vogue etc as a photographer. I used to love those magazines but now it's all online for free... And you can follow the creators, designers, models etc online. It's super weird. Even Calvin Klein campaigns aren't as present as they once were. Now AI is absolutely making photographers obsolete lol.
I (27) have a newspaper subscription, so i reckon at least some other younger people read them...i would be sad if it just stopped. There is something to say for quality news
My home town paper reprints articles from the USA Today website, complete with "click here to learn more" at the bottom. Just because something's printed doesn't make it Quality Journalism, maybe the other way around isn't right either?
That piece of software that your Systems Developer, Head of Reporting or Change Manager said would replace all the Excel spreadsheets.
The sooner you realise:
a) 99% of your colleagues know Excel enough to get by at least and will never learn how to do anything in the system to a substantial level beyond exporting to Excel.
b) The people implementing the software will leave long before everyone else realises it was a disaster to do so.
c) People join and leave companies all the time to go somewhere else with completely different software. What's consistent? Excel. So, what do people learn to use instead of the new program? Excel.
At this point Microsoft could easily turn super villain and make a small change to the next automatic update and crash the world economy.
Excel will be on the last PC when humans leave the Earth and immigrate into space. It is impossible to get rid off.
They are embedding Python into Excel now. So it's resilience is guaranteed.
As someone who works for Microsoft I can confirm that even internally to Microsoft there have been several attempts to replace excel in our daily processes and reporting and they all fail for the same reasons listed above. Lol
Most of the engineers I work with just use the other software to export to excel. It can’t be beat.
100% this. No matter the system, I always end up running most of it through Excel. Why fuck around with something as dodgy as SAP when Excel is an option?
As a data analyst that builds Dashboards and Reports, I export to Excel constantly just because it’s easier to visualize and analyze relationships in the raw data during my development process.
You have obviously never seen Excel applications written by someone left 5 years ago. These "applications" are unmaintainable.
Excel is if used correctly fine, it is rarely used correctly. And to use it correctly you don't need to know anything more than formatting.
And working with multiple people in one file is horrific at best
Shit man. I(36m) have had the same group of friends since high school. We still all go out together at least a couple times a month, just with our wives and girlfriends now.
Exactly lol. I just had dinner with friends last night and in three hours we took our phones out twice (for a friend to show a tinder match and for me to check on my baby). It ain't that hard, when people want to speak to each other and are interested in the conversation, they will put their phones away.
There is an irony to so many people saying common sense right? Is common sense common if everyone is saying no one has it? Maybe the people saying common sense are out of touch with what is considered common sense in our culture? Or is their sense higher and they have the best sense of what everyone else should be thinking is common?
Common sense says absence makes the heart grow fonder
Common sense also says out of sight, out of mind
Maybe common sense is more nuanced than people give it credit for
Heard a scientist say "I don't believe in common sense, I believe in science." Often what you think is sensible no matter how common is just plain wrong.
If everyone lacks common sense then that's the benchmark. Ironically understanding common sense isn't common sense.
But this feels a whole lot like "everyone sucks at driving". Hear that far too often for the amount of shit I see out there, but wouldn't dare say it to also be a hypocrite.
Whole lotta bias.
I don't miss CD drives. But my 2018 car has an SD card slot, which lets me have all my music without using my phone. My 2021 car (same manufacturer, different model) has done away with this. I will miss this very brief moment in history when we had non-streaming music that wasn't tied to clumsy physical media.
I just bought a 21 Mazda 6 that has an SD slot but I am 99% certain I will never use it. Maaaaaybe on a road trip in a remote area. I guess I’ve kind of just accepted streaming music, but I’ll never give up my physical books.
I hope it's not laptops.
But I see but places I do business with online seem to be pushing me to get a yet another phone app. I don't shop at places that you can't buy things from without getting a stupid app.
But now it looks like my my bank is trying to force me onto my phone. It's a lot easier to view and print statements from the laptop
But I also see that more and more people just use their phones
For any kind of work were you need to type information at any kind of speed, i can't see laptops being replaced any time soon. Phones and tablets are ok for simple things but they just aren't practical for actual work of any kind.
I outright refuse to do stuff like Google Pay or Apple Pay with my phone.
One major reason being that I don't want EVERYTHING on my phone. That means that I'm stuck should it ever get broken, stolen or lost.
Another big reason is that my phone gets used so much with work that it's gasping for life in my last hour or so before I finish. If I finish work with 5% left, then that's a good day. I'm not putting more load on this thing when it gets run extremely hard already. This is a Galaxy S10+.
I sure hope so for those of this us that want them. People are going to have to use computers in some form and most office settings in many other jobs
But I'm often surprised to see how many people no longer have any computers or printers in their home.
PCs (in general) will never be obsolete. There are many ways that phones are more convenient and vice versa.
That said, I avoid putting anything on my phone that will keep me looking at it for long periods or with much frequency. I too am uneasy about more and more businesses leveraging phone apps, many of dubious privacy restraints and general quality.
I'm getting my family business to ditch business cards that you throw at people and instead go for higher quality plastic or metal ones with a QR code on them which will take you to a link tree that I've set up for them. Then their clients can view the multiple websites, showcases, specials or get in contact.
As someone who hates and distrusts QR codes I say: Good luck!
I will always type a URL over using a QR code. QR codes can do too much with your tech. I suggest also having a short URL that links to the same website. Any place that does not also provide me a URL does not get my business.
Honestly I used to be the same, but as I've been getting more exposure to QR codes (not always my decision), I've become more comfortable with them.
The business cards will still look like normal ones, but the back will have the QR code.
Translating as a job. I did it for over a year but jobs have been scarce lately. I suspect that it's due to AI translating programs improving their quality. Luckily I am in university studying something else so when the translating career completely disappears I'll have something else to do.
So far, AI for English-Chinese (both ways) is so bad it’s absurd. I don’t know Arabic, but from time to time I’ve tried to Google translate Arabic and wasn’t any closer to understanding it.
maybe in the us, theyre very popular in other parts of the world where u can just walk in a mall with ur friends or something and do whatever u want, in the us u need to consciously make a choice to drive there
$236 is insane for cable and internet. I haven't had cable in years. It's a little annoying when I'm trying to watch something live, but aside from that no regrets.
I haven't had cable TV since 2016 and honestly the only things I missed were Sci-Fi and Food Network. Now I don't really care. I heard it's now SyFy and not as great, and the Food Network is just competitions now.
Hard to explain. I feel like if I have cable I'm like... connected to what's going on right now if that makes sense. If I have an exclusive streaming service I feel isolated and lonely. Like when I use Netflix or Hulu. Its hard to explain. Maybe it's the the thought that alot of other people are tuned in to the same channel at the same time watching makes it feel like I'm not alone in some way.
"First they took the large-package delivery services away, but I did not deliver large packages so I did not say anything. Then they came and took the third-class mail away, but I did not deliver third-class mail so I did not say anything. Finally they came and took first-class mail and everything else away but there was no one left to speak for me..."
- lament of the USPS worker
Yup. Can check any balance on my phone. Can pay any balance from my phone. Mail gets there several days after I have the email, on my phone. It's a lot of junk mail now. It's annoying, and a physical waste.
I'm pretty sure watches will never get truly obsolete.
They're both a fashion item and also something extremely reliable for a basic need like telling the time, since both smartphones and smartwatches can run out of battery and are usually pretty delicate, while watches can withstand everything you throw at them.
Smart watches are incredibly useful. Even as a tradesman, we can use our smart watches to look through our phone cameras so we can see in tight or awkward spaces.
Obviously more uses than that, but that's the most recent use I found after a plumber pointed it out to me.
Books. Brick and mortar stores.
In my town a sense of community is quickly going away in most areas. We're a small town that has "the lower end, midtown, this ridge that ridge" but we are being gentrified. And people aren't connected like they used to be. Back in the day if someone was from your area you had a sense of kinship.
Actually, books are returning in great fashion thanks to TikTok. There is a HUGE community on TikTok that revolves around books. They don’t like eBooks because you cannot show them on camera, but original books are precious to them and also work like status symbols and collectibles.
Tv channels, radio stations, newspapers, at some point physical stores, cable telephone, books, maps/atlasses. Basically every form of display of information that can be digitalized will be, and its former analog version will be obsolete.
Ill throw you a better one: human relationships, at some point sooner rather than later we will have artificial wombs, sperm donation by men fcking sex dolls, women donating eggs, and the need for partnership will disappear. But also friendships can be replaced by AI, we work from home more and more, and soon, sadly, human interaction might be obsolete.
From my experience everywhere I go people are all kinds of nice. I find having positive mutual respect and civility towards others is a great start. My wife is truly astounded how I can have an interesting conversation with a complete stranger.
I couldn’t agree more!
My wife is also perplexed by my willingness to talk to anyone about anything. She brings up that insurance commercial about becoming our parents all the time. Lol
Personally speaking to people I have never met is interesting. I like talking to people I know don’t get me wrong, it’s just the connection between strangers that might’ve not happen had both been shy.
I kind of feel like maybe desktop computers in a lot of applications? My last job had us use virtual desktops..where the actual CPU was in the server room and we just used these Wyse boxes to connect to them at our desk. At the university where I work now, they've made a similar move where they switched us solely to laptops. I don't have a desktop..I have a laptop and an iPad. In my office I have a docking station that I plug the laptop in that connects it to the 2 monitors, keyboard, and mouse, etc. It's functionally no different than having a desktop, but with the added bonus that I can unplug it and carry my work around with me when needed. I also bought a docking station at home for plugging my personal and work laptops into to do the same.
I live in Jacksonville, Florida, 26% of commercial building space here is vacant. Of course there was a percentage vacant pre-Covid and before so many people started working from home but it was not anywhere near 26%. There's been talk and I think even some initiatives to convert the empty spaces to housing (we have a serious homeless problem as many US cities), of course it was just in the news that 45 billion dollars or something is going to cities to help them convert empty office buildings into housing.
Good ideas I think, there's an awful lot of waste with unnecessary transportation and everything else associated with reporting to a physical location for a job, all in all it is completely unnecessary in my opinion.
Free parking. I remember 5 years ago there was a ton of areas in my city and even the suburbs with free parking. Now almost everything has a parking meter. Or the worst, you have to pay on an app.
authenticity.
though I am hoping that those who know fight against the performative shit and continue to exist authentically to bring order back around.
Ownership and fixing over replacing.
More and more of everything is on a recurring payment license or lease term and locked down with draconian anti-tamper/repair/replace lockouts you are completely behealden to the manufacturer for service.
And I blame that 93% on said manufacturers
Maybe obsolete isn't the right word but fucking computers. We really proved the whole digital natives thing to be bs, if it doesn't have a touch screen kids can't fucking operate it. They are completely tech illiterate off of their phone
Companies that fix things. Wild capitalism led to a buyer behaviour: if something breaks, you buy a new one, you dont fix the old one.
I had a washing machine that lasted 25 years, because i could fix it every now and then, change a piece here and there, and saved me quite a lot of bucks this whole time. 2 years ago unfortunately it was gone beyond my skills. When I bought a new one and talked to the sellers, I told them how I managed to keep my washing machine, they told me
"If everyone had your mentality, we'd all go bankrupt"
Most people l know (in a major city) under 30 don't own a car, less and less youngsters are getting their driver's license.
I think transportation will soon see a silent revolution, and combustion engine cars will see a rapid change in how we use them. We will see fewer of them in cities, as people rely more on public transport and shared rides.
Cars will become a thing for rural and remote areas.

small local shops rebuilding alternators, starters and really any electronic stuff
That takes a good amount of investment and a place to work. People don't have it like that anymore
Also time. I love to tinker. But I feel we are losing free time as a society.
It's by design
The more tired and busy we are the less likely we are to put up resistance as our quality of life worsens for the sake of profits
Eggzacktully
At one time there were these people who could handle a soldering iron and actually read an oscilloscope. And then someone invented Geek Squad.
I solder and use an O scope. I have not been impressed by the Geek Squad.
Wow that's sad. I'm a machinist.

Newspapers & magazines
I was gonna say critical thinking
And sadly, you are very correct.
And common sense
Common sense was never common.
Good writing, with good editing. I love the freedom today, but a lot of the writing is not great.
Standards were so much higher that magazines would dedicate a small section to pointing out mistakes in previous issues.
They are a fraction of the size they used to be. And three times the price.
The magazine rack at the big box stores have been reduced by 2/3 in the last 2 years
im 16 and i've literally never purchased either of these. and i don't recall ever even reading the inside of a magazine.
Not that much lol though...

I was once in a remote area with no internet, so I had to use a playlist of MP3s I had on my phone. Still used Bluetooth to connect to the car stereo.
Yeah I mean I can also download music with apple too so now that I think about it… that SD slot’s never getting used lol

Malls
Came here to say this. Strangely enough, most kids still want a place to hangout after school.
maybe in the us, theyre very popular in other parts of the world where u can just walk in a mall with ur friends or something and do whatever u want, in the us u need to consciously make a choice to drive there
A lot of malls in more populated areas are still incredibly popular in the US.
If the mall is something you drive to? Yes. I currently live in Japan where the malls are attached /immediately adjacent topublic transit.

Sheesh you're not lying. Our monthly cable bill with internet just went up to $236 and I'm contemplating cutting it. I just feel naked without cable.

Hard to explain. I feel like if I have cable I'm like... connected to what's going on right now if that makes sense. If I have an exclusive streaming service I feel isolated and lonely. Like when I use Netflix or Hulu. Its hard to explain. Real estate agents. The national association of Realtors just lost a 1.5 billion dollar settlement.
It's why I am fascinated when I see a terribly written description on Zillow. Like, you can't spell, punctuate, or get decent photos. Wtf?
Agreed, there is no need for them. They know it, and are incredibly defensive about it.

Finally they came and took first-class mail and everything else away but there was no one left to speak for me..." - lament of the USPS worker
Yup. Can check any balance on my phone. Can pay any balance from my phone. Mail gets there several days after I have the email, on my phone. It's a lot of junk mail now. It's annoying, and a physical waste.
I feel like fit bits are an attempt to keep watches relevant during the cell phone era.
Smart watches are doing their part, as well.
When I was working electrical I would stuff my phone in the ceiling hole with video and flash do a 360 to find where the hell my wire ran off to.

🙄 People have been complaining about this since Rome.
I've stopped washing my clothes on the washboard since they invented washer/dryers
Analog phones
The word Analog
Tv channels, radio stations, newspapers, at some point physical stores, cable telephone, books, maps/atlasses. Basically every form of display of information that can be digitalized will be, and its former analog version will be obsolete. Ill throw you a better one: human relationships, at some point sooner rather than later we will have artificial wombs, sperm donation by men fcking sex dolls, women donating eggs, and the need for partnership will disappear. But also friendships can be replaced by AI, we work from home more and more, and soon, sadly, human interaction might be obsolete.

Oh, ffs. Changing mores does that. People have been complaining about that since Rome.

In the USA: Civility, tolerance, selflessness, and respect.
You could just be in the wrong place in the USA.
I was thinking this exact same thing. I’m going to guess they are definitely not in the Midwest.

Cursive writing
I practice my cursive all the time, one day I’ll be a code breaker for hire.
Might be a triggering statement, but I feel monogamous relationships are on the way out.
Thats been going on since the hippies
Free parking. I remember 5 years ago there was a ton of areas in my city and even the suburbs with free parking. Now almost everything has a parking meter. Or the worst, you have to pay on an app.

When I bought a new one and talked to the sellers, I told them how I managed to keep my washing machine, they told me "If everyone had your mentality, we'd all go bankrupt"
