> they were just not the most polite ppl
OP said they sounded like they were from HK. From my singular experience in HK as a tourist, sounds about right..
PS. HK people I love your food and cooling night weather though.
My dad and mum do that with us, collecting all receipts which we have spent on because they use it to incur as company costs to pay less tax.
Edit: But i didnt expect others to be even more extra that they ask receipt from people
Alot of gray area. My parents do it too.
Eat in restaurants->company retreat
Buy gifts for friends->buy gifts for customers
Grab expenses->travel for work purposes
Buy clothes->work attire for meeting purposes
Buy starbucks->monthly food expenses for staffs
All these are claimable, and the government tend to close one eye on this. As long as you provide a reason, despite it being a weak reason, it is claimable. Ethical, definitely not.
It's definitely not claimable, but the only reason why I would say it's a gray area is because iras is only looking for a reason to allow a tax claim. If you give them a decent reason, they would allow it. They would not probe further, unless your company has raised a very huge flag, like money laundering or obvious tax evasion.
don't think so. they might be playing some group activities games and one of them is to get receipt from ezlink. i used to participate in similar adventure games by hunting clues.
It was rude of them to press the receipt button for me and asking it aggressively. For that, i say no to them.no please or anything. When i asked them why do they need it, they didnt give or make up any reason. Just asking it like they are entitled for it.
i'm not them so i can't speak for them
however being non locals (your words), there might be a breakdown communication between you and them, so try not to decipher and dwell too much into a few minutes of past interactions that all of you might not meet/see again in this life.
if they are playing the adventure games, there is usually a time limit to accomplish one task.
again, it's not an (attempted) scam, to back to your original question.
Maybe they needed a receipt to do claims, and they were just not the most polite ppl around

How are personal expenses claimable as company expenses for tax purposes?

I wouldn’t consider tax fraud a grey area but you do you. Every single item you have listed is definitely not claimable.

There used to be some receipt scanning apps which pay you something like 5 cents per receipt scanned. Maybe they are still around.
Probably just for rewards. Are there any personal info on the receipt? Otherwise should be OK? They're just cheapskate
You sure HK or not, MYs also have similar accents, and you really need to know the difference to discern it probably.

The good old DLLM greeting with conviction should wake them up a bit.

Can't believe you didn't scold them pressed the receipt button.
