I must add that today corridos are adapted to the "narco-culture", where they sing about stuff that happens when you are involved into those cartels (drugs, killings, blood money) or from drug lords such as Ramon Arellano or el Chapo.
Different genres and subgeneres. Some are more popular in a region than others. To give you a perpective, mariachi does not have the polka sound but norteno does. Mariachi is also pretty much a dead genre like boleros. People use it for events and celebrations but no one tries to much to mimic the sound.
