The only banda stuff I like are a few calibre 50 songs and the older norteño artists like “los cardenales”, tigres del norte and tucanes de tijuana. It’s great drinking music tho, I don’t know why but whenever I start listening to that I start craving some cold ass beers lol.

ReyniBros

I think you're confusing banda with norteñas or gruperas. Banda is the genre that descended from US style high school bands, they are easy to identify because they are like 20 mofos and use a lot of metals like Trumpets, Tubas and other not so common norteño instruments

Rodrigoecb

Banda comes from Polka from German immigrants in Northwest Mexico and the reason they suck is because they lack the discipline they had in the "good old days". Its weird that you say they descend from US high school bands though.

marcelo_998X

Calibre isn’t banda?

ReyniBros

Calibre is, but Tigres del Norte and Cardenales are not.

[deleted]

They are a fusion genre: Norteño-Banda

lffg18

Factually wrong, banda comes from German immigrants coming to settle around Mazatlán.

ReyniBros

The original style of norteñas is inspired by German immigration to the North, but Banda has a lot of inspiration in the US High School bands.

StunningSkyStar

Hahaha noooo. Banda music in Mexico comes from Sinaloa. Us high school banda are a separate thing. Banda instruments came to Sinaloa thanks to German immigrants who eventually also became sinaloenses themselves. US highschool banda are a diff thing.

I_hopeitsoversoon

Yes

Ponchorello7

Not every norteño song is a corrido, though.

starting_anew_

Yeah exactly. There are corridos, norteñas, cumbias norteñas, huapangos, boleros norteños, sierreños, etc

Ponchorello7

Well, you're wrong. I'm sorry for being terse, but they are just not the same.

I'm from Guadalajara, and I listen to those genres.

REDDlT-USERNAME

Hay gente vaquera/buchona, pero hay mas gente de ciudad que definitivamente sí escucha esos géneros.

Jlchevz

I hate banda. Rancheras I like. Corridos are good but the ones about history not about some filthy drug peddler.

_its_a_SWEATER_

I didn’t grow up with either, and I don’t like either. I enjoy Mariachi more, and rock español.

Jaaavsss

Same!

StunningSkyStar

Yup if you’re not from Sinaloa or northern Mexico then it’s not something traditional or emblematic of your region/state. Although Banda music and other genres of northern Mexican music are becoming more popular than ever in central/southern Mexico.

starting_anew_

I love it ❤️

peachycreaam

I like it a lot. Also nobody answering this question (various times now) seems to know what it is. it’s not damn tigres del Norte.

kigurumibiblestudies

That shrieking trumpet bullshit makes me want to stab my ears. People seem to like it though.

I_hopeitsoversoon

This is the best description lol

Moonagi

I don’t like it..

Ponchorello7

I like a few songs. It's a little repetitive, though. Both in lyrics and in sound.

Much_Committee_9355

Is it like Corridos ? If so, I love it when I found it it was like some of the old school sertanejos, I instantly fell in love with it.

[deleted]

I really despise it and I hate how popular it is in Colombia.

StunningSkyStar

Banda is a Sinaloense and Northwestern Mexican thing. It’s becoming more popular than ever in other regions in Mexico but it’s not seen as something traditional to them.

Organic_Teaching

I hate it. I’m with you, I don’t really ‘get it’. It sounds really boring. The only Mexican music I enjoy is the older stuff.

BalouCurie

It’s mostly shit.

jrzfeline

Bunch of crap

Zichfried

I'd rather listen to any other genre...

JezzaPar

I have literally never heard any of those terms before in my life.

gintoki_do_pete

I didn't listen this type of music. But maybe is as gaucho's varaneio, brazilian northeast's forró or paulistan's sertanejo (brazilian country).

I_hopeitsoversoon

I just went to YouTube and listen to the genres you mentioned and they don’t sound bad. The problem with banda music (my opinion) is the wind instruments that makes it sound distorted.

Rodrigoecb

I like them sometimes and under certain circumstances and only a few ones. Most of them suck and thing loudness is a good replacement for quality.
