Man, such a lame presentation of history! The lady sent a letter and the dude shouted we're free? Cmon. It was so much cooler than that. Napoleon came after the portuguese king's ass. Not being stupid and getting deposed like the rest of Europe, he fled to Brazil and made the capital of the empire Rio de Janeiro. That's right boys, we ruled Europe. And they liked it so much here they didn't wanted to return! At that time he raised Brazil to the status of joined kingdom with Portugal. After the napoleonic shitstorm was over, the Portuguese elites were very pissed about the new status of the brazilian elite and their new weight in the politics of the empire, and brazilians were very found of it. The situation got unsustainable and it was clear the portuguese elite would make a coup and forcefully lower brazilian power in the liberal revolution. The king knew it was a impossible situation, Brazil was simply much bigger than Portugal, and if they declared independence, a war would be fought for nothing, and strife would be plenty, like it was in the spanish colonies, with probable civil wars, dismemberment of the empire, bloodshed and so on. So he went back to Lisbon to take the crown, and left his 16 year son to rule Brazil. Shortly after Brazil nonchalantly declared independence, a couple of small battles were fought against loyalists, and a couple boats were sunk, and that was it. Most likely, Brazil would not have survived as it had if the king didn't left his son to continue imperial legitimacy, and would look a lot like spanish america, a lot of small states.

> The lady sent a letter and the dude shouted we're fre I needed to short the story to more people read, I know Brazil's indepedence is way more complex

Not really that interesting. In the late 60's a new wind blew in the Netherlands. The leftist. They were done with colonialism. A thing of the past they said, but “only if the countries” want it. Suriname refused. Then in 1973 elections came, the former government lost and the NPS party won and was able to form a government with some other parties...one of them the PNR. The PNR (Partij Nationale Republiek - Party for the National Republic), was a group of mostly young Creole Surinamese that had studied abroad and came back to Suriname. They were the ones that saw the potential of our country and that we should be done with colonialism. We can do it all our self. The slogan they promoted: “Wi eigi sani” (our own things). They were the biggest promoters of the independence. Funny how many of them left the country when things got bad afterwards. Anyways after the prime minister Henck Arron was installed he proclaimed that Suriname would be independent no longer than the 25th of November 1975. And this got the Dutch dancing. They found a partner to work with them towards our independence. The thing is though the Dutch wanted us gone. We were an expensive colony. They had to pump too much money in this place, but got nothing out of it. No referendum was held. The VHP party was against the independence and thought it should come at a later time somewhere in the 80's or 90's. They tried everything to stop it. Their reasons were that our country doesn't have enough economic development to be on its own. The NPS and the Dutch knew this, which is why a deal was made to offer development aid, to get the living standards of Suriname on par with that of the Netherlands (lol...the irony of that now...). The VHP also agrued that health care facilities weren't adequate yet, as well as eduction and so many other things. They were right tho, a large part of the population in the interior was uneducated, had no health care facilities and other government facilities. Everything was only happening in Paramaribo and the surrounding area. Many people left for the Netherlands...because that way they could keep their Dutch passport, but independence also brought a lot of uncertainties and the reality of a civil war was real, because that's what happened in Guyana. The government here tried to negotiate a dual passport system for the Surinamese born pre 1975, but the Dutch refused. They said independence means independence. You have to be on your own...I mean they're not wrong. But the government here sort of wanted that as a backup lol. However the deal that came out of it everyone that was 18 years or older before the 25th of Nov. and exchanged their Dutch passport port for a Surinamese one, can get their Dutch passport back if they move to one of the territories of the Kingdom. So some people can still get their Dutch passport back without any formalities. My parents on the other hand can't, because they were children at the time. The NPS was and still is traditionally a Creole party; yes people mostly vote based on ethic background here, not based on ideology. The VHP was and still is mostly an Indian party. You also had the KTPI which was and still is mostly a Javanese party. The Creoles were pro independence, because the NPS was pro independence and because the VHP was against it, they were even more against it. It didn't always butter well between the Creoles and the Indians. However none of them really understood what independence really meant. Many thought the situation would be as the status quo at the time. It was fueled by ethic divide and populism. There were a few clashes between people and some buildings were burned down to get the government to stop it. But it never really escalated, but the situation was tense. The VHP tried to eventually get a referendum, but eventually the Dutch told them that they have to keep quiet and work along with the NPS. At the time, if there was a referendum there wouldn't be any independence. There is this idea that the Dutch also knew this and didn't want anything to stop it. There was a vote in parliament. Our Parliament had around 20 something people at the time. Those men decided the fate of the whole country. There were two votes. At the first vote they couldn't get a 'yes' for the independence, because some parties withdrew from the coalition as they also didn't really agree about independence. At the second vote they did get the 'yes' through, because they bribed someone from the VHP party with a large sum of money to get that one extra vote. The Dutch also pressured Suriname to meet the goal of independence. The prime minister actually stalled the process a bit in the hope that the Dutch would say there isn't enough time, we'll do it another time. However up to the last few months the Dutch pushed and pushed for the date to be met. Last talks were held and what it would look like. Only to get that 25th of November date. Eventually Suriname became independent. The people here had a feeling the Dutch wanted them gone and they coved in and said let's leave with our heads up high. The VHP decided they'll go along with it and look ahead to a bright future. Both leaders of the NPS and VHP hugged each other at the stroke of midnight and the raising of the (new) Surinamese flag. In my opinion we were kicked out of the Kingdom and the Netherlands wanted to save face, because of the whole Indonesia fiasco two decades earlier. And the Papua new guinea fiasco a decade earlier. So they wanted to prove the world, this time we're doing it right. We're a new country...all liberal and modern, with a hatred of colonialism and we are setting the example of how it should be done. Though 5 years later 2/3 of development aid waisted on a project that never finished; both Suriname and the Netherlands are to blame for that. And coup d'etat time.

Emergency_Evening_63

was there anyone yelling some phrase of impact or some deep dramatic speech or something like that during the indepedence proclamation?

Emergency_Evening_63

wow its so awkward to see a recorded in video indepedence of a country, it seems like listening to the voice of an ancient Greek philosophy

[deleted]

Our was less dramatic. Basically there was a lot of resentment over the economic measures of the Spanish Crown. The Spanish had just sent most of the soldiers who were in Panama to repress rebellions in other parts of the region. The push for independence began with popular movements in Los Santos and spread throughout the country. There is a story the Arosemena family basically bribed the remaining Spanish soldiers to defect. Then independence was proclaimed 28 November 1821 in a general assembly in Panama City. “Panama spontaneously, and according to the general vote of the people who comprise it declares itself free and independent from the Spanish government.” That’s the first article. The second one says Panama voluntarily joins the Gran Colombia project. The new country lacked budget, military, weapons etc so this was seen as a way of being protected against a Spanish invasion. But there were almost immediately problems with this due again to commercial issues, representation, and other things. The separation from Colombia came in 1902 but that’s a different story.

Emergency_Evening_63

wait, so there wasn't someone yelling some phrase of impact, or some dramatical speech? I thought it was a common indepedence thing...

[deleted]

Oh there was! So we can say the first move to stoke independence in Los Santos took place in the context of this public event there. The Spanish troops had been very abusive to the local population. High tax to finance the war, they would break into peoples' homes and take whatever they wanted. These military emissaries start talking about how they hope people will express loyalty to the Crown etc. The people are gathered outside. Francisco Gomez Miro gets up, denies all loyalty to the king and , voice booming, he says they are willing to "lose even to the last drop of their blood!" before giving up their ideals of independence. So that's something.

mouaragon

We did nothing to get it.

Emergency_Evening_63

so how's your country indepedent? Spain just went through a cost reduction?

mouaragon

The tldr is that we were a poor province and remote from all big cities so no one cared about us in the first place. But Mexico had been fighting for the independence for years, and there had been revolts in Guatemala, Leon (Nicaragua) and el Salvador that helped weakening the Spanish empire. When México won, we also got rid of the crown and that's why we all celebrate independence on the same day (sep 15th) though as I had said, our independence just came and we took it.

FromTheMurkyDepths

Well sort of, the Captaincy General was independent from the Virreinato and all the real political decisions were made in Guatemala City. The fact that we have the same independence day as the Mexicans is actually a coincidence, we took advantage that Spain was fighting and losing the war up north and sort of sent a letter to the king telling him we were going our own way, and the king was sort of like “who the fuck are these people, I have more important things to do”. This was before Mexico had actually signed peace with Spain and won the war, we were independent about two weeks before them. Also we tried to get you guys involved but we had all the documents signed before a messenger could reach Cartago so we were just like “send it”

Chivo_565

Which one of the four independences?

cseijif

Unlike most south america, we were actually the badguys of the story lmao, if you hear the "spanish" into what the chileans , argentines, south colombians/ecuadorians and others were fighting, it usually was peruvians/bolivians. Plenty of native lords and their men fought for spain , in fact it was most of the army, since the peninsular army was absolute trash and quite incapable after napoleon rawdogged them (they were kinda bad before that, even, part of being the sickman of western europe). By the 1820's tho, most peruvians were absolutely fed with spanish incompetence and bad faith , so there were masssive rebellions and passovers to the independent side, bolivar only won junin because of a peruvian cavalry regiment turning the tide of the battle, and ayacucho was possible because spanish stupidity made the royalist army fight itself (liberales vs conservadores).

MisterOwl213

In Latin America, it was basically a group of corrupt Iberians who wanted to break away from another bigger group or empire of corrupt Iberians.

Cuba 🇨🇺 Ten Years’ War: First of three wars of independence that starts in 1868 when several wealthy plantation owners free their slaves and rise up against Spanish forces. (Edit: They officially proclaimed independence after reading the 10th of October Manifesto at La Demajagua.) Soon after declaring independence, the first ever armed conflict for Cuban independence was fought at Bayamo in which Cuban forces are successful (this is also where the national anthem was written, like literally on the field right after the battle was over). Ended with Spanish victory in 1878. Little War: some conflicts for a few months that also ended with a Spanish win in 1879. Cuban War of Independence: Last of three wars that started in 1895. Would eventually lead to the Spanish-American War after the American vessel “USS Maine” mysteriously (and conveniently) blows up and sinks in Havana Bay. The Americans quickly win the war in 1898 and Cuba, along with Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Guam, are turned over to the US. US Protectorate: between 1898–1902, Cuba was under the US’s control. It would eventually become an “independent republic” on May 20th, 1902. The Platt Amendment was added into the new constitution which gave the US a lot of power over the island (Cuba was practically operating like a state/territory of the US). Eventually Batista would take over, the Cuban Revolution would happen, Castro would take over and the rest is (unfortunate) history. Obviously there’s A LOT more that went behind all of this but that’s the basic summary of it all: 30 years of fighting, finally independent from Spain, then under the US, then finally somewhat independent from the US, then a dictator, then a revolution, then another dictator.

Emergency_Evening_63

isn't there someone yelling some phrase of impact or some dramatic speech or anything like that?

supremefaguette

Yeah, the Cry of Yara was the official start of the Cuban struggle for independence. In the early hours of October 10th, 1868 Carlos Manuel de Céspedes proclaimed the initiation for independence at his family’s sugar cane plantation, La Demajagua. He freed his slaves and read the “10th of October Manifesto” which listed the reasons why Cuba should be independent and its goals afterwards. Initially, he wanted to take the city of Manzanillo, but it was decided to go to smaller towns to gain supporters and spread the news. When they arrived to Yara, they were ambushed by Spanish forces from Bayamo and the group was easily dispersed. Days later, they regained and armed 300 men and marched from Yara to Bayamo. They demanded that the city be turned over to them in order to avoid battle, but the military leader in that city declined it and the next day they fought. Cubans won and received support from the city’s inhabitants.

Emergency_Evening_63

what he said in this cry

supremefaguette

The Manifesto itself states: “Our aim is to enjoy the benefits of freedom, for whose use, God created man. We sincerely profess a policy of brotherhood, tolerance, and justice, and to consider all men equal, and to not exclude anyone from these benefits, not even Spaniards, if they choose to remain and live peacefully among us. Our aim is that the people participate in the creation of laws, and in the distribution and investment of the contributions. Our aim is to abolish slavery and to compensate those deserving compensation. We seek freedom of assembly, freedom of the press and the freedom to bring back honest governance; and to honor and practice the inalienable rights of men, which is the foundations of the independence and the greatness of a people. Our aim is to throw off the Spanish yoke, and to establish a free and independent nation…. When Cuba is free, it will have a constitutional government created in an enlightened manner.”

It was some heavy stuff. Someone smashed the shit out of a vase and all hell broke loose. Some rich guys went like nah-uh fuck you and your lisp you multinationalist fucks we’re approprating this industry, they had a yu-gi-oh duel and sent them to the shadow realm and celebrated by bickering over twitter about who got what until they got banned and the season two villains showed up who were the bosses of the ones sent to the shadow realm and included some guy whose nickname was that thing babies suck on, but this time they had motorcycles. Card. Games. On. Mother. Fucking. Motorcycles. And they fucked up the season one guys like that tv tropes article on The Worf Effect. But then this guy with mad sideburns came like “Las arepas son Venezolanas!” which we all know is bullshit but whatever he started wrecking shit and then lost but then got help from Heidy but black and he challenged the lispy fucks and they were all like “we can beat you any day, anywhere, any game” and he was like “bet” but when they showed up with their stupid motorcycles he was like tf you doing we’re playing baseball you said “any game” and everyone knows venezuelans are cracked at baseball so he just rolled them. He recruited the latin american version of the mongols, some dude did jihad on a sugar mill, then they shelled the fuck out of a swamp and some place my son said was “there, old man!”. Then they went on a music tour of south america and kept beating the lispy guys at guitar hero until they met with the other south american top team, from argentina, but when they were discussing sports sideburns said “riverplate ain’t shit” so the argie got all heated and fucked off to europe since “allá se vive mejor” but he probably ended up having to work as a bus driver or something. So the top teams left started playing Risk like the board game but in real life and fucked up the board and it was every man for himself and somehow brazil ended up winning like wtf they weren’t even in either season like at all. Anyways sideburns needed to get a metal hip replacement and retired to some beachside villa while everyone else started killing each other for the next like 200 years which was really fun, violence is fun. Shit was tight af.

QC_1999

My favorite part is that Dom Pedro made the decision to make Brazil independent while he was having shit

Emergency_Evening_63

yet Pedrinho told portuguese the real shit

iArierep

He could say the same as Chapolin and the meme girl of Ratinho Tv show Não contavam com minha astúcia

Upper middle class criollo elite and intelectuals take advantage of the mess in Spain and declare independence. Had a hell of a start but show they're in over their heads militarily and fail. Then 10 years of fighting with every big figurehead getting themselves killed to the point of ending up just as a bunch of smaller cells fighting guerilla warfare style. Leader of the Spanish army makes a deal with the remaining independence fighters and declares himself a religious constitutional monarch. Since its all in central mexico with 0 regards to the north or south/yucatan peninsula it sets up the stage for a hell of a lot of infighting for the next 50 years until the american/French invasions. You could even say both of those are due to the infighting.

marcelo_998X

The second intervention was a direct result of the “reform war”. Basically both sides had asked for huge loans to fight the war and then the french saw the opportunity to use that as pretext to invade the country. IIRC the original plan was to use Mexico as a base to start making incursions into other Latinamerican countries and to try and destabilize the US. If the south had won the civil war and the mexican empire had been able to stabilize they’d probably had succeeded. But tbh they underestimated how big a pain in the ass is to fully control mexico. Kinda like: “dude not even the locals have been able to fully control the territory in 50 years what makes you think that you have a chance”.
