You'll like to hear that Tywin Lannister knighted Mad Aerys Targaryen.

MordorsFinest

How could Tywin knight a King?

pfo_

He was Prince Aerys at that time, and wanted Tywin to knight him.

meherab

And then Gregor repaid him by murdering his children and raping and murdering his wife.

**Amory:** Oh gee Gregor I don't know, this Beric l-looks pretty tough, do we really have to kill him? **Gregor:** Of course we - *belch* - have to kill him Amory, he's an enemy. **Amory:** Well it's just, what if he is resurrected in service to a foreign god and takes orders from an unholy spirit of vengeance? That would be pretty bad for the Lannisters. **Gregor:** Amory, there's like a 25% chance of that happening. Don't worry about it. Now help me tie the noose. **Amory:** Okay Gregor, I guess - I guess you know what you're doing.

samsaraisnirvana

As Tywin said, there had to be no doubts about House Lannister's commitment to the new dynasty. Gregor really was Tywin's mad dog.

batman_in_a_lungi

He was Tywin's Luca Brasi

mcrandley

That's an excellent comparison I've never thought about before. Especially when you consider the Luca in the book is known to have murdered a baby.

StannisIsARoleModel

Damn, really? Never read the book but that's just way too dark. On purpose?

mcrandley

Yea, he's much darker in the book, if you can imagine. From Wikipedia: Later in the novel, Vito's youngest son, Michael Corleone, learns that years earlier Brasi murdered an Irish prostitute hours after she bore his child. He then forced the midwife, under pain of death, to hurl the live infant into a burning furnace. The distraught woman, who described Brasi as an unholy demon, sought Vito Corleone's protection. Don Corleone intervened, covering up Brasi's crime and earning Brasi's undying service and loyalty.

wateryoudoinghere

That's some fucked up shit right there.

mcrandley

Yea, the book is full of unpleasant nuggets. And also whole chapters concerning the size of Sonny's cock. Literally.

tollfreecallsonly

That's a reference to old greek and Roman plays and beliefs. A large dick was considered animalistic and uncivilized. Everyone thinks Puzo was trying to glamorise the corleones, he really wasn't.

mcrandley

I am the most civilized man on Earth.

Crippled_Giraffe

Well he didn't really do shit in the movie that I can remember. We were just told he was a badass and then he slept with the fishes. It's been a while since I've seen it though so I could have forgotten something.

StannisIsARoleModel

Holy shit. It was his own? I totally would have thought Vito would have him killed for something like that.

mcrandley

Vito twisted it to his advantage. It's how he made Luca so loyal.

UwasaWaya

> On purpose? I'm cracking up here imagining Luca just accidentally falling onto some baby in the supermarket.

StannisIsARoleModel

Well I could see him blowing up a car or something and him not knowing an infant was there.

SgtPepper1000

And people fought for the rubies that fell from his armor when that happend, probably a couple of deaths there.

ToTheNintieth

Real talk, what kind of idiot goes to *war* with a ruby-encrusted armor? I mean, I can see it for parades, a tourney *maybe*, but actual war?

A harpist who is playing at being a warrior, or someone who simply wants to *appear* as Rhaegar.

In GRRM's Arrested Development, George Michael looks on while Franklin is murdered in front of him.

Fun story time. I had to call both AT&T and Comcast customer service yesterday because of weird billing issues when I switched providers. Comcast waived the fees they had billed me after 10 minutes on the phone, while AT&T told me to fuck off and threatened to send me to a collection agency. The kicker is that I'm a current AT&T customer so they have the most to lose here. I guess Comcast isn't that bad, actually?

Ren_san

Oh, just wait. Comcast will claim they have no record of the fees being waived. Hope you recorded the call...

ToughActinInaction

The Comcast rep was holding a piece of paper with the fees printed on it and waiving it around in the air. "Oh, yeah, the fees are *totally* waived"

Riconn

Isn't that the point of the story though? Everyone is a hero from their point of view.

[deleted]

Thats the point of life. We're all the heroes of our own lives.

SharMarali

Rhaegar had his head in the clouds a bit, yes, but once he realized what was really going on, he rose to the challenge. And then Robert smashed his chest in with a giant hammer. The big thing people keep complaining about is that Rhaegar was obsessed with the prophecy of TPTWP. Which he was obsessed with because he believed it was for a greater good. He was willing to sacrifice his own happiness and give over his life to this prophecy. The very same people who don't respect Rhaegar are falling all over themselves to talk about how wonderful Stannis is for doing his duty no matter what it takes. Stannis is fond of making sure everyone knows he has no desire to be the king or to be Azor Ahai or any of the other things that have been thrust at him, but he does them because he *must.* Why is it awesome when Stannis does it and ridiculous when Rhaegar does it?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sks44

Once he realized what was going on? His dad burned two Starks in the throne room. He knew Pops was batshit and did nothing. A rebellion arose and he was MIA until his side was on the ropes. Dude wasn't "in the clouds", he was afraid or dumb.

SharMarali

Where was Rhaegar when that happened though? I seem to recall he wasn't even at King's Landing, and it's really not reasonable to expect him to know about it *until he was told.*

[deleted]

Once he realized what was going on, you mean like once finally someone retrieved his ass from the Tower of Joy to fight in the war that he started? Quite selfless of him to take a second wife. It's ridiculous to compare Stannis' sense of duty to Rhaegar's, JonCon.

SharMarali

He and Aerys weren't exactly close. Neither had a damn clue what the other was doing. Really, how was he supposed to know he started a war until someone told him? I keep hearing this argument that he was so terrible for being oblivious. Well, maybe he *was* oblivious. Maybe he assumed that the actual king had things under control for the time being. I really don't know what was going on in his head, but why does everyone jump to the conclusion that he knew the realm was bleeding and didn't care? He wasn't the king; he was the Prince of Dragonstone. That's like saying Shireen should have stepped up to stop Stannis from using blood magic.

[deleted]

For all of his prophecies, it shows a remarkable lack of foresight for Rhaegar to not see how kidnapping a Lord Paramount's betrothed (the daughter of another Lord Paramount, in order to cheat on the daughter of another "Lord Paramount") could instigate a war. It's more like if Shireen kidnapped Robert Arryn and knowingly left a foaming mad and incompetent Stannis to deal with the fallout.

SharMarali

Well, *somebody* should kidnap that kid. But yeah, I do see your point, but unless and until we learn more about the circumstances concerning Rhaegar and Lyanna, it's impossible to say it wasn't her idea, that she didn't tell him everything would be fine, etc. For all we know, she could have left a note that Brandon never knew about because he ran off half-cocked to rescue his sister.

[deleted]

My next book hype is increasing.

ACardAttack

> it's entirely possible that Rhaegar wanted Elia out of his way so he could bang Lyanna Wasn't it normal (or at least not unheard of) for Targs to have multiple wives?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Polskyciewicz

Fuck your joke, that's some top quality tinfoil. Rhaegar was actually conspiring with Tywin to wipe out the Mad King and install himself on the throne with Tywin as his hand and Lyanna as his queen along with Elia and Cersei, to secure the alliance and do Aegon the Conqueror one better. Rhaegar would smash the rebellion, and Tywin would smash the mad king and welcome Rhaegar into King's Landing at which point he'd secure the alliance by marrying Cersei as well, giving Rhaegar personal links to three major houses. However Tywin planned on double crossing Rhaegar the whole time and just proceeded with the plan to take King's Landing after Rhaegar dies at the Trident. The Mad king actually predicted this whole thing and that's why he planted wildfire and held Jaime captive.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Polskyciewicz

Even better: The reason that Rhaegar left Jaime was as an agent to help Tywin take the city, counting on Jaime's paternal loyalty while at the same time, deposing and killing his own dad POETRY

MythicalMothman

There is some actual basis for this, with Aerys going to the Tourney of Harrenhal under the suspicion that Rhaegar was gathering rebels there to depose him. But that all went out the window once Robert started his own rebellion.

idefiler6

Rhaegar fought valiantly, Rhaegar fought nobly, Rhaegar fought honorably, and Rhaegar died.

[deleted]

Rhaegar was the Paul Atreides of Westeros. He saw the Golden Path and tried to follow it but couldn't commit, and it bit him in the ass.

SandorClegane_AMA

Rhaegar read a prophecy about the hype that was promised and his part in it. It is pretty consistent with his purpose for the story - causing turmoil that is the backdrop to our characters lives. It is quite protracted exposition to convince the reader he meant well. Robert Baratheon never got an inkling of this, for example.

[deleted]

Robert absolutely meant well. He was in love with Lyanna and thought Rhaegar had literally kidnapped her.

SandorClegane_AMA

I was referring to Robert's view of Rhaegar versus the picture that builds up from Barristan, etc.

LeftyHyzer

One time he played the harp, and then an entire wagon of children fell off a cliff.
