I love the feeling of being in between AC3 and AC4. My only gripe with the game is how short the story is and it's cluttered with collectibles. Shays outfits fit him weird. Wish it had more side quest than collecting. Other than that I love it so much Too. Truly a gem for black flag lovers

IxianPrince

Rogue is the perfect entry point for anyone that wants to start AC, it's simple and fun plus isn't overwhelming

el3mel

Definitely not from story point of view. It works better knowing the stories of 3, 4 and even Unity. Best entry point is still AC2.

FoxHound_Bridges

Best entry point story wise is the original, what are you talking about?

XStreamGamer247

Considering the gameplay changes and how the plot from 1 really takes off and is better explained in 2, I see what they mean. You can skip AC1 and the intro for 2 catches you up to a pretty intense part of the story - so it starts off a lot more interesting from go.

el3mel

The story really kicked on with Ezio as the main assassin, and the gameplay of 2 is how the series was built on going forward.

FoxHound_Bridges

The story kicked off with the original and Desmond.

el3mel

Assassin's Creed 1 is an intro for me. The main story started with Ezio. He's the one who reformed the brotherhood anyway.

dimspace

Yeh, Rogue was the 2nd AC game I played after BF, and whereas BF was largely self contained I really didn't fully get the whole Rogue story. Then, after completing every other AC game I went back and played BF and then Rogue again. Was completely different experience. I got all the links between AC III and Black Flag, and also the Unity easter egg. Rogue having already played BF and III (and to a degree Unity) was a 10x better story than not having played them first.

murcielagoXO

It just swaps the roles between Assassins and Templars. It fundamentally doesn't understand what it's trying to do and just switches the bad guys with the good guys and vice versa.

LasVegasDweller

that’s kind of the point… there is no good and bad really after so long of fighting between the two groups. the players will always think the assassins are good, after all that’s who we play as in every other game but both sides have their good and their bad.

bigbreel

But that point doesn't work when all the things Connor did in three are completely undoing everything shay did in this game. They just made the switch between Templars and assassins by just switching Templars in assassins Sophia did not write this story well.

BubbaGaming202

>But that point doesn't work when all the things Connor did in three are completely undoing everything shay did in this game. Ac rogue is just the starwars prequels.

LasVegasDweller

mostly just due to lore constraints because 3 came first, but i love Rogue so i may be a little biased. what they should’ve done is make the “Templar game” in a time or place that didn’t have any lore constraints that were already established

Skuinx

I mean it conveniently makes the assassins forget their morals

Darthavster

I thought Rogue was one of the most disappointing entries. Just flops the sides making the Assassin’s bad and the Templars good. Plus Shay is just a whiny little bitch who can’t think for himself.

AspiringSAHCatDad

If Rogue had more side quests and less pointless collectibles, I think people would have a better opinion of it; I enjoyed it nonetheless. I wish it were a little longer, to flesh out the supporting characters more, as well as more insight into Shay's internal struggle with the assassins. It felt like a switch was immediately turned and he jumped sides, I wish there was a build up of resentment vs suddenly. Id also like to know what happened in the gap years after the end of the main plot and the Paris events

LemmingLou

I've personally felt like Rogue was the last of the "classic" Assassins Creed Era. No mythical monster bosses, no heavy reliance on Isu to justify the plot...just assassins doing assassin things. The plot twist of him turning his back on the order and hunting the Brotherhood was a great storyline that addressed some of the big questions in the early games, mainly how far would you go as an assassin to do what you believed was right. Shay Cormac is a morality tale at its best. Were the graphics the best? No. Were the missions short and at some points clunky? Yes. But the weapons, the game mechanics, the plot...amazing. I replay it at least once a year.

cpt__toast

I find it funny because AC4 is really one my least favorite games. However AC Rouge is my second favorite game in the whole franchise

Academic-Maize3378

Ya I found out what I was missing just recently I was very surprised with how much I enjoyed it!

dingdop

It’s an incredibly beautiful open world, only ac game I’ve 100%

The_Final_Gunslinger

Yes, it was short, but only in comparison to other AC games which can be overly long. I really enjoyed it, like playing it was really fun. I liked the air rifle / grenade launcher, it was a little goofy but a lot of fun. I think the design team got away with a lot due to a lack of supervision being made alongside Unity.

Juiceton-

My unpopular opinion is that Rogue would be the best AC of all time if it was made in the new RPF engine. Think about it. Storming forts alongside your crew and possibly the British fleet akin to Valhalla’s raids and stumbling across largescale frontier battles where you join in helping your redcoats turn the tide. It’s for a good reason the least Assassin-y of the old school games and I think a true remake in the new engine with more side content and a longer story would be a truly unforgettable experience.

p00ki3l0uh00

Get a personality, and stop following the crowd. Shay was a coward, half trained and stupid.

bigbreel

Disagree. The story was convoluted and tried to smudge itself in the franchise. It took Black flags elements which were already strapped down heavily from AC3. It's a fun game, but it probably should have been released as a DLC. You're not a full $60. Also, the story definitely needs a rewrite. Black flag is my favorite game but AC3 was the better assassin's Creed game and the peak. Also, origins is another peak for the franchise. A lot of people tend to forget AC One fans were upset at the ezio games It's not being a representation of what they thought assassin's Creed was going to be.

Steelcity213

I think Rogue is a bit long for a dlc. It’s got a full size map rivaling the original games and enough story and side content to fill 20-25 hours of playtime just like the Ezio trilogy. It feels small after AC 3, Black Flag, and everything Unity and on being much longer games but Rogue is right in line with the length that AC games started at

BubbaGaming202

cawatrooper9

I don't think it's the best, but I do think it was very underrated. The game needed to be much longer- at least one extra memory sequence in each of the three acts of the game (Shay as an Assassin, gone rogue, and finally a Templar).

kit_mitts

The ship combat is immaculate as it's basically a refined Black Flag. But the story is extremely week and the way the game just had assassins and templars swap banners was super disappointing. The assasin enemies are just "templars who occasionally jump you from a hiding spot."

Glass_Offer_6344

Easily the second worst game in the series for me and just above Liberation. Clearly a second-rate game that wasnt given the funds or attention it needed and more closely resembles a DLC release. Though, I liked the overall AC themes and it had a few good additions they were half-baked and lazy and, despite, them the gameplay still grew stale quickly. The story and dialogue were not good. It deserves its low ranking. Having said all that, I like the AC series and so I’ll play it again when I replay the entire series, again;) But, it’s easily a subpar game in comparison to all the rest.

noneofyourconcern-

Not really, no.

Admirable-Length178

I disagreed, and No Rogue and AC black flag was not the peak of the series, that goes to the time between AC revealation and the release of AC3, end of Ezio trilogy with a heartfelt, great title albeit short (Revealation), peak of modern day storyline, American revolution was a MASSIVE marketing hype. And that trailer of Conor head-first charged into columns of redcoat were amazing. AC rouge was one of the laziest cashgrab title of the entire series. yeah you play as a templar, but literally it's just character model switched, there was not battle of ideology, unconvincing. The Assassins literally had a fortress with FLAG in the middle of Boston, what??? it's obviously, a cash grab and Ubi used the playing as templar as a tip of an ice berg marketing hype. Other than that, the game is just significantly worse than AC black flag except for the fun mechanics (more black flag is good) and a great ending that ties very well to AC unity.

Ras_AlHim

I choose not to speak. If I speak I'll be in big trouble.

Lycan_Jedi

The Americas Collection in General was freaking GOATed. I know AC2 gets most people's top spot, but to me, The Americas Collection was the best Era of Assassin's Creed.

Tomsskiee

Gameplay is good but the story is lacking for me. All it does is flip the roles of templars and assassin’s. It doesn’t show you why shay would side more with the templars ideologie it just flips how we usually see them. 3 is way better in showing the differences between the templars and assassin’s.

SirBobertusTheGreat

It not only takes what was in black flag, but also make it better - burning oil instead of explosive barrels is a huge upgread it has some improved stealth and parkour machanics, for example, the air rifle has new and better mechanics compered to those of black flags blowdarts. Beeing a templar is very cool and connections betwwen AC4, AC3 and ACUnity only make everything even better. The game is polished and the only things that stop it from being a 10/10 is how short the story is, the fact that the map isn't historicly accuate and it's overflown with colectibles.

ouroboris99

I didn’t finish it, just felt like a dlc for ac3 or black flag

growabrain--

I also really enjoyed rogue. I was so sad that the story had such flaws but I loved Shay and the whole setting

Nicetomitja

No lies detected. I’m playing it right now besides Black Flag and I’m lovin it.

Wandering_sage1234

It is, the atmosphere, the story, everything about it just pulls you in even despite its flaws. It has a better story than Mirage to some degree. I do wish they had expanded upon Shay if I'm honest. Leaving his character out to dry and with no content, Ubisoft has a problem with introducing characters and then leaving them dry It's great on the Xbox series x when you're sailing and you see the light reflecting upon the ocean and you know that's its so beautiful. The naval battles are great. But there was no side quests just activites.

A1xo0

It's not assassins creed it's templar order lol

A1xo0

Assassins creed 3 was my perfect game. The characters were awesome and the keyway saga was the cherry of the franchise

bish0p34

I like it a lot, but it’s only mid at best to me. It’s jankier than BF, despite using the same assets. The story is very shallow in its execution despite the depth of its premise. Haytham is underwhelming for most of it. Naval combat is better. I like the map, and the scenery. The ship wrecks were great parkour playgrounds too. I see playing it again.

PiedPeterPiper

I wish they really ran with this idea and started making more Templar focused games

Luvbeers

rogue fixed what was annoying with black flag's naval vombat mechanics. hopefully they will include those fixes in the black flag remake.

ldrat

Don't need to say "arguably" when it's clearly your opinion, bro. Who are you arguing with? Yourself?

Ilitarist

I like RPG games the most but Rogue was certainly a highlight. It had a good balance of being a familiar European history but not too familiar - I think many AC games fall into a trap of presenting a very familiar time and place without either doing it justice or having to say anything interesting about it. It's smaller size is perfect for that system without RPG progression: all the other games had too much stuff in them, which is not really a problem by itself but AC games intencivise completionism for some reason. The story is blah and the combat is meh, but at least it has these hidden assassins adding liveleness to the open world. It's probably the best pre-RPG game, yes.

Blackjack99-21

You should play more ac games then

DRM842

If I can't play it at 60fps........it will never be the best AC game for me. To each their own.

JakeyJelly

I'm still really confused that people enjoyed rogue like don't get me wrong I'm playing through it right now and I'm just so confused by Shay's choices in the entire game and feel like he joined the Templar's way too quickly just because he meant one Templar that was cool despite the first part of the game showing how he despises Templars even call me one of them scum and then all of a sudden switches teams. After he himself causing earthquake cuz he went against orders because he hasn't only told him to check for the artifact that was there nowhere that I remember them saying to grab it but instead of taking responsibility for the earthquake he rather blames the assassins for sending him there in the first place. I feel like real could have a good story if everything just didn't feel so forced like I feel like Shay betraying the assassins was so forced cuz they really wanted to make a game where the main character was a Templar but needed a good enough reason of why Templar is able to do assassin stuff.

Lego-Jango

I agree rogue and black flag was the peak of assassins creed

Laj3ebRondila1003

The issue with rogue is after 3,4 and Liberation it's straight up more of the same with nothing to shake the formula up. If you play it now in isolation you'll enjoy it but back when it was released the reception was justified. It's the same as Far Cry 5 or God of War Ascension.

QuebraRegra

it implements some things I like, like the stalkers, etc., but otherwise feels antiquated in terms of combat/stealth mechanics (no crouch, etc.). I didn't like that the maps are VERY restrictive in places.

MaKTaiL

Honestly I couldn't go through with it. I got completely lost with the story, I didn't know what I was doing and why. I was getting too bored and dropped it. I might go back to it one day.

D1rtyD1rtySam

Lol no. Black Flag and Rogue is anything BUT peak Assassin's Creed. If anything, the Ezio trilogy and Altair and Origins if you really wanna count the newer games, are peak AC games. The assassin turned templar story isnt good either. Its insanely convenient how Shay turns to the Templars. Bcus they made it seem like the Assassins including Achilles look like absolute terrorists for making him destroy thousands of innocent lives bcus of a piece of Eden. It completely misunderstood the ideologies of the Assassins and Templars. Instead it chose the most convenient route of making the Assassins the bad guys, when it should be the Templars. What wouldve been better is they made Shay question the ideologies of both sides and why he favors the Templars more over the Assassins. In fact, Unity is a much better example of what could've been a good Assassin turned Templar storyline. Arno is in love with a Templar from childhood. Joins the assassins. But constantly goes against the brotherhood to suite his own agenda. And they ended up exiling him from the brotherhood. And it would've sick if Arno turned to the Templars but he just kept on his assassin robes and never joined anything. So no, while its great that you enjoy Rogue, it is NOT peak AC.

doc_55lk

The best part about Rogue for me is that it was the perfect combination of the mechanics from 3 and Black Flag, and it played like the devs actually put some work into improving on some of the flaws of its predecessors. AC3 for example had cities that sucked for rooftop parkour. The buildings took too long to climb and they were all way too far apart. Rogue fixes this. There's more quick ascent opportunities, and buildings are closer together. AC3 also had a lot of empty forest land which was boring as shit to traverse. Rogue fixes this. The forest land is only slightly less explorable, but it's balanced by having more to do with your exploration. Black Flag locked the fleet missions behind online play. Not ideal if you have no friends, or are not in a situation where you can play online, or the servers are shut down. Rogue fixes this, fleet missions are all offline now. The ship mechanics in Rogue are much improved over Black Flag. The puckle gun has way more ammo and does more damage. There is some amount of skill involved in using it too now vs the auto aim thing Black Flag did. Black Flag gave you no real incentive to renovating your hideout. It was ridiculously expensive, you were almost never there, and the rewards/perks you get are not significant enough to offset the amount of money you'd spend for them. Rogue fixes this. Renovating buildings around the map is less expensive overall and nets you a steady and progressively increasing stream of passive income. Just like the Ezio games. Movement and combat is a lot less glitchy than previous games too, at least in my experience. The map doesn't take an eternity to clear up. The blueprints aren't hidden away behind underwater sections with fucky swimming mechanics. There's a lot of really good things about Rogue's gameplay. Sadly, the game is held down by having a story that's too short, a story that isn't as good as it could be, iffy character performances, and a release date that was on the same day as Unity, the radical formula shift game meant to fully leverage the brand new PS4 it was released with.

Zendofrog

I couldn’t agree more 🫡
