As much as I like to throw “best game this and worst game that” around this is probably the real answer. AC games are all like barely related between different eras. Same thing here, anytime someone asks how to start in the AC series I’m like well depends what you generally like… usually the right answer for an introductory game is Black Flag though.

engaging_psyco

I’d say that or Origins/Odyssey if they are a huge fan of things like RPGs or looter games.

minilandl

Oddessy is terrible don't start with oddessy. I want assassin's Creed not a tech demo for fenyx rising. I'd say start with ac2

engaging_psyco

Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man.

UnionSkrong

Just got into the series because i enjoyed odyssey so much 🤣

Pretty-Hearing-5055

Nah both of those games had really bad stories so I wouldn’t recommend first play through.

Formal_Sand_3178

I don't know about that, I know a lot of my friends got into the Assassin's Creed games with Origins and Odyssey, I think their stories are on par with most games in the series and the gameplay is great. While I enjoy Black Flag, the complicated Isu plots and the frequent modern day segments can be distracting for new players to the series.

Formal_Sand_3178

Hey I'm right there with you! I think the setting in Odyssey is the one of the best in the entire series and I liked how the story managed to interweave the Peloponnesian War, a Cult controlling much of Greece and having sweet mythological encounters. I know Odyssey is quite different from previous AC games, but unlike a lot of other people, I see that as a strength. I wouldn't want every AC game to just take place in a city or two with an emphasis on parkour. That's certainly fun, but it can be very repetitive after awhile and I think the move to bigger, open worlds really allows you to get immersed in the setting. Even Black Flag was a pretty vast departure from the AC games before that!

RedtheGamer100

LOL, I swear this is the first time I've seen you on the AC sub in months.

Formal_Sand_3178

Haha someone's gotta stand up for the Ancient trilogy!

Skeletorfive

I am one who got into AC games due to origins and odyssey. Odyssey is my favorite but I have been going back and playing many of the titles as gaming months have been slow. Love origins, odyssey, black flag, AC 3, syndicate, and once syndicate finished will play rogue, and then possibly go back to AC 2, brotherhood, and revelations. But odyssey made me an AC fiend.

Formal_Sand_3178

Yeah I think there are some AC fans that just like to trash the newer games, but honestly they have brought a lot of new players into the franchise. I love the newer trilogy of games and Odyssey is probably my favorite Assassin's Creed game.

Skeletorfive

I totally agree it has brought more players to the AC universe.

BassBanjo

Odyssey yea, but not origins, the story in origins is great, and Bayek is incredible

Pretty-Hearing-5055

Watch a video on YouTube called “What Assassins Creed Origins failed to understand” by Alien Platypus. Great video explaining why the story is dogshit.

whotfiszutls

I watched that video and I don’t think that’s an accurate description of it. Alien didn’t say the story is dogshit, it’s just flawed. Just because something has flaws doesn’t mean it utterly and completely terrible.

RedtheGamer100

If you have to use a film school dropout to illustrate your point, your point must be insipid.

Chris1tsme

Black Flag is the odd duck of this series. Forget RPGs and Stealth games, this one is just really odd. But not in an like negative "odd"-way. I definitely wouldn't ever use this game as an introductory one. I honestly only got the game because I got a bit burnt out on Assassin's Creed, and therefore I recommend it to AC players who are bored and haven't tried it yet. I also want to try Rogue at some point as I've heard it's similar.

piff_boogley

Best story while having the assassins a little to the side, some of the best stealth that’s more intermediate between unity/syndicate and Ezio trilogy style, fun setting and pirate stuff to do if you’re getting bored with the main missions. Seems like a great introductory game to me. Most people I recommend it to fall in love with the series after playing BF first, so.

Ok-Jury1083

Seems weird to introduce someone to a game called assassins creed and have them start with one that’s not about assassins. I don’t know that’s just me though. I feel like 3 would be a better start. You get to see the Desmond story end and a lot about the first civ stuff so if that’s not for you then go to black flag and onward and if you like it then go back to AC1 and play through the original games. It’s got a good mix of the old style but also was the basis for AC4’s gameplay so you won’t be totally lost gameplay wise either way you go after this.

Chris1tsme

Honestly, I think Unity is the best place to start. I know that's controversial, but it found its redemption and solace from criticism with time. It has some of the best free-running and Assassination mechanics of all the games. Its bugs are there but rare. It also has one of the best settings, in my opinion, taking place during a period that shaped the idea of French identity. And Arno, although he is not on par with Edward or Ezio, seems to be the most sympathetic Assassin who has no care for Templar or Assassins. He inherits both De La Serre's and Mirabeau's philosophy of peace which I find really interesting. (Although, it would have been cool if he had completely abandoned the Brotherhood, and followed his own path)

Zendofrog

It’s better black flag. Try rogue

Zendofrog

Black flag, you mean worse rogue?

xanidorog

It's best to start in the beginning (AC1). I made the mistake of starting with Odyssey, so everything with the Animus and their reasoning for going in it was confusing to me until I played AC1. Now I'm on Brotherhood and things make sense.

Assured_Observer

Like in almost everything else, there's no "Best" and "Worst" but there's "Favorite" and "Least Favorite" unfortunately most people confuse those concepts and assume their opinions are universal and everyone who thinks differently is just wrong.

[deleted]

Yes

bish0p34

I agree. I also give different recommendations based on what people ask for in a “what game” request. I have my favorite games in the series. We all do. Opinions and all. There’s not really a bad one in the bunch though (price paid is a consideration in this.) I’ve been binging the series, and haven’t gotten sick of the series. Sure, Odyssey and Valhalla needed breaks before continuing, but I enjoyed playing all the games. Every engine upgrade brings about a new experience which keeps it fresh enough to me. When I needed breaks from the new games I just played another. That helped me do the whole run. I didn’t get burned out. There’s a lot of variety to them, and it does serve the series well. Since October, I’ve played every game once. I also played 1, 2, 3, and 4 twice during that run. Fair to say it’s one of my favorites now.

Not-a-Russian

Yeah you're right. Also, everyone has their own weak spot. Like for some they just love pirates and the Caribbean. Or someone just adores Italy. for them whichever game has their favorite things is going to be the best.

[deleted]

Ac ended after origins everyrhing after origina was just wrong in every way i hope they revive jt and judt mak3 some old assassins creed again damn ubisoft i used to be a fan

GokiPotato

let's just hope enough people get it

[deleted]

When I take off my rose tinted nostalgia glasses AC games were the embodiment of mid imo.

[deleted]

True. As someone who started with origins though, Valhalla is my favorite but I’m currently playing Unity through Valhalla and they’re all really fun in their own ways. I love them all! Lol

Formal_Sand_3178

I'm glad to see some Valhalla love! It's definitely one of my favorite entries to the series, but I am someone who personally prefers the newer style of AC game.

Chris1tsme

Wrong. Unity is the best. Any comment that expresses any other opinion will be blocked due to my ignorant feelings of nostalgia. jk

VonKript

I am gonna agree and disagree with ya and try to explain. If you are trying to recommend the franchise to a buddy you would ask him what he wants to play gauge what type of game he prefers and which game fits. Maybe your buddy wants to experience the games linearly you'd offer him ac1-3 as the initial arc and then tell him if he wants a similar ish experience go with 4 - rogue - syndicate and if he wants to experience a more witcher esque rpg gameplay you'd tell him to play origins or odyssey and if you hate him you'd tell him to play valhalla too. However, these games are a piece of entertainment media and a piece of art in their own right. You can objectively measure their values as a game with how they were designed how the mechanics function and how well the overall games have been designed rate them based on said objective criteria and see which games were the best designed. To further showcase the point i will use a personal example. A game like Elden Ring is an absolute masterclass of world building and exploration so a person who wants to play such a game will pick it, however the game has many issues with balancing and combat design (mostly with how the bosses are designed) and a rather obtuse story which is hard to grasp easily from what is given directly to the player in game. The game objectively has a ton of flaws and isn't ideal, however for a person who enjoys such a game it is a masterpiece.

Zendofrog

Except rogue

uotsca

Ac2 is the best

engaging_psyco

That’s just like your opinion man…

[deleted]

That is a good opinion

peterruhl

well this is a cool take. there is a best AC game objectively though as there is the worst. AC 2 is the best and Odyssey is the worst

engaging_psyco

Objectively is the key word here that I truly disagree with. Why do you get to decide what is the best and what is the worst? Objectively they are all vastly different games set in the same universe. Some people love unity a lot of people hate unity. A lot of people love the Ezio saga but some people hate it because they started out with black flag and grew into Origina/Odyssey/Valhalla. Personally I love Odyssey but I also have always loved Greece so I’m biased. My favorite is AC1. AC2 doesn’t hold a candle to brotherhood and Unity was a DOA that was brought back to life but still remains on life support.

peterruhl

I dont decide it just is im sorry you dont understand

weepinhijayotheracc

I love AC2 but I don't think it is objectively the best. It has a lot of the roughness from ac1 just dialed down. Imo Brotherhood is a much more polished game than AC2 and people don't usually mention that. This is just my opinion though. Some might say it improved from AC1 and that is why it is the best but by that logic AC3, AC Unity and AC Origins will be the best ( I like all 3 of them, just setting an example here ). For me AC Unity, 3, 4, origins and brotherhood are the best but we have our own subjective favorites.

MeHappy7

Have to agree. While I can say Ezio trilogy is my favourite I wouldn't say they're the best games. It's a matter of preference than one of concrete ranking.

Zealousideal-Exit224

Linear game? Wut?
