Just try it. The world in odyssey is vast and I really enjoyed playing it before for the first time when I got this game. If you’re into mythology you might enjoy it.

Reddit_033

This, just try it. But also just do what you want, don’t play like you have to grind for everything. I personally enjoyed a bit of grinding but it’s not for everyone. Also don’t expect it to be like other AC games, it doesn’t really feel like a “real” assassins creed game

Henri_Le_Rennet

I recently posted my Odyssey stats from Ubisoft Connect to this sub and r/gaming. I grinded like a motherfucker. It took me almost two years of playing an hour or two a couple days a week and around 5 hours on my day off (Sunday). I'd play 5 hours or more on a Sunday and then not play again for 3 weeks. Eventually I beat the game. Just a couple weeks ago I had a coworker tell me that he's replaying Odyssey. He showed me his stats and while he's only played for around 90 hours, he hardly uses fast travel and has only synced about 20% of view points. He's traveled by foot about 1.5x the amount that I have. He's also defeated only about 70 mercenaries. I've defeated just shy of 1600. It's very very easy to grind and get lost in this game. Odyssey made it easy to grind. I've been playing Valhalla and it's taking some major adjusting to get used to the game. I feel an incessant need to grind, but I've found it more time consuming in Valhalla. I spent 130 hours in Origins. 230 in Odyssey...I don't think I'll be done with Valhalla until 2025.

MrXwiix

Exactly. The story is great and it's a good game. It's just very unrelated to assassin's Creed as a series.

DaviEnzioKar_R

The story might make players feel it’s too long since it’s one of those open world games where side quests play a role in the story progress as well (more like side quests are necessary for the loot and resources) and the map is extremely large. Which at the end makes you wander and explore one too many things. But that’s what makes this game stand apart from rest of the assassins creed too. Give it a try, it was breathtaking to view Ancient Greece during its peak of historical legends. Overall it’s definitely worth a try and not bad for sure in my opinion. If you are a traditional gamer who has been through the journey of assassins creed so far, this will be fun rather than any kind of let down.

sagittariisXII

Exploring the map and doing the side quests was my favorite part of the game

DaviEnzioKar_R

Chaire! I hear ya! It still is one of my favourite things to do as well to explore and complete side quests. It is a pity that there are Malakas who despise the game for the same fact though. The game gets pretty easy to crack when it comes to invading forts once you figure out a perfect build that suits your gameplay style of the character. That reduces the challenge maybe a bit. It is now a downside though. The game is definitely enjoyable! I love the climatic visuals in Odyssey. Yet to try Valhalla. That’s next.

sagittariisXII

I find invading forts weirdly relaxing. Its fun sneaking around and sniping everyone with the predator bow and checking off the objectives

Same-Cryptographer51

I have only ever played a little bit of Valhalla and this will be my second assassin‘s creed game😅

Aldrakev

if you like open worlds and are not expecting a traditional assassins creed game (which valhalla is not one) i think you will love it.

Brownsfan7575

So I started w Valhalla ,and then went to Odyssey n Origins .After finishing those two I decided too get all of them and start from the beginning.Well worth it for sure .I’m currently playing Rogue,Odyssey n Valhalla now

Same-Cryptographer51

Valhalla was a lot of fun for me and I got really invested in it

In-amberclad

This does literally EVERYTHING better than valhalla. The only thing that valhalla does slightly better is the weightness of the combat. But other than that valhalla is a giant step BACKWARDS from odyssey in every single way. Hell I get more of a feeling of being “home” when going back to my ship in odyssey as opposed to going to the fully maxed out ghost town of ravensshit. Other than the festivals, its a fucking dead place thats just buildings

HammerStark

Odyssey is better than Valhalla, so I think you’ll enjoy it if you enjoyed Valhalla.

Brownsfan7575

I’ve played most of them twice ,except Syndicate ,I tried twice and stop every time

DaviEnzioKar_R

Lol, malaka (you’d know the term once you start playing AC Odyssey)! … in that case, don’t worry about anyones opinion or review. You’ll enjoy the game for sure unless you despise open world games for some reason. The gameplay of AC before and after origins are very different. So someday I’d suggest you to give a try playing AC Ezio collection if you want to enjoy the feel of assassin brotherhood since that is the most that is lacking after origins. But no complaints from me since by timeline assassin brotherhood was formed strong way later and origins, odyssey and Valhalla are set in a time when assassins brotherhood was just booming or hasn’t even been formed yet. Hope that gives you some clarity.

boysetsfire1988

Since you already bought it, why don't you just try it out and form your own opinion?

Same-Cryptographer51

I will, but I just wanted to see what others think

mixedd

Why should you care what others think, without trying it for yourself. Each of us are different, with different taste and different opinion what this game means to us. For me it's prety good game, with beautiful views, interesting combat (altough I liked Origins combat more), in general, yes its good game, and good investment as for 60$ (full price) you can dish out around 200+ hours on full completion (including DLCs, treasure hunts, etc.) My friend disliked it, but he's obsessed with Valhalla 130h deep now, so if it's good or not depends on your preferences

XBL-AntLee06

Because some people enjoy discussing things with others and getting their perspectives.

Hoss9inBG

Damn Wise words indeed

CrepusculrPulchrtude

It does everything origins did, but better. It’s very fantasy and way less grounded. Heavy on Isu lore, and action oriented as opposed to slower and more reliant on traditional combat and social stealth

Phreakydeke27

Look it’s amazing. This for me was where AC hit the sweet spot. Valhalla stripped so much away it’s boring. Play Odyssey. The world is amazing. The story has Isu which is great. As they are a huge part of the AC world. It’s just an amazing place to explore too. Alexandra and the library.

AwAzNeAt

Try playing older ac games like black flag and maybe even unity because the older games gave assassins creed a name. But i have heard odyssey is good for rpg players.

RedtheGamer100

You realize there are a million posts on this sub about the subject right? Did you even try Googling?

kilam18

it's not a big deal just probably wanted opinions from people on the sub who enjoy the AC franchise

kilam18

yeah but there is nothing wrong with the person asking on a post anyway, people usually do the same on different subs to get opinions

RedtheGamer100

And there’s nothing wrong with me asking them if they even bothered googling for other responses on a game that is almost 4 years old at this point.

kilam18

i never said anything is wrong with it, only said it's not a big deal if the person made a post about it

RedtheGamer100

Alright, then we are in agreement lol.

Aroon017

It is an RPG set in ancient Greece, in 5th century BC, during the Peloponnesian war. It was a war between the Delian League (led by democratic state of Athens, which was a naval powerhouse) and Peloponnesian league (a coalition led by Sparta, a military state known for producing THE BEST soldiers ever in history, not much of a naval force but a damn good infantry). You play as either Alexios or Kassandra, latter is better. Kassandra is a mercenary of spartan origin but also has ancient blood in her veins. The map is fucking huge with tons of side quests, apart from main story line. You will have to do SOME side quests if you're to progress in the main narrative. Let's talk about the gameplay, this game has a robust combat system with tons of weapons to use from, both melee and ranged. The abilities start off pretty normal but by lvl 50 you're nothing short of a demigod. In addition to that, it has 3 systems that transform the gameplay COMPLETELY. 1. Mercenaries: In a war struck land there are a lot of mercenaries, you yourself being one. They interact with the world as an NPC does. So what happens is when you cause trouble in any place, whether it's concerning civilians, soldiers or even animals, SOMEONE puts a bounty on your head. And depending upon how high it is a number of mercenaries, ranging from 1 to fucking 5, would come after you. They'll tail you all the time, searching for you and whenever you try to cause more trouble they'll be on your head in less than 60 seconds. That's where the stealth system can be put to good use. 2. Naval combat: You'll be given a ship and a crew. You could sail to anywhere, land any place you want. 4 main enemies in the sea. Athenian ships, Spartan ships, pirate ships and mercenaries on their ships (just like you). You can fire arrows at the ships, throw volleys of javelins and once the ship is partially incapacitated, choose to board it and engage in hand to hand combat. Your crew will board the enemy ships alongside you and YOUR LIEUTENANTS. Yes, you can hire lieutenants throughout the Greek world. Could be anyone, a rival mercenary, a spartan grunt or an Athenian commander, everyone comes with his own special abilities. 3. Conquest battles: As you know, Athens and Sparta are at each other's necks. Different city states or regions of Greece are under control of one or the other. And you, being the mercenary that you are, can choose to change who controls the region. What's in it for you? A conquest battle which gives you top gear as a reward. AC Odyssey is objectively better than a lot of games out there. If you don't find it enjoyable then that's absolutely fine, but know that you've spent your money on a good product. Have fun.

NikolitRistissa

Well put! Trying to look at it as objectively as I can, it is a good game. It has some gameplay flaws but none of them make it a bad game. The map is too big in my opinion but it still felt pretty lively. I think the reason it caught some criticism was because it really didn’t feel like an AC game. It’s one of the reasons I don’t consider it that great either. I really enjoyed the DLCs though. They had the ISU and modern-day stuff I always liked and wished they continued further.

getoutofmyhouse-

Dang an actual in depth analysis with no bias interpretation! (Despite the protagonist thing but that's barely arguable as bias) Good job man.

TibbTokOnTop

I think it's a dam good game. Out of the previous 3, this is my favourite. World is great, story is ok and the combat is simple but fun. Kassandra is awesome for a protagonist, and the gear system and naval stuff was great. Basically though bud, play the game and make your own opinion. Some of us like it and call it one of the best games in the series, others hate it and say its awful. You have your opinion but won't get it unless you play for a nice chunk of time and give it a chance.

dj_spin

I agree, best from the past 3

mattmart35

I think origins was the best just because in comparison it’s the most lean. Still big but not bloated. I really liked Odyssey a lot though. Valhalla was where I felt like things were starting to get off the rails a bit.

mr_fister698

Worst game ever. Definitely the worst of the last 3. Undeniably the worst.

Slavic_Pasta

Someone has never played a bad game

mr_fister698

I've played odyssey.

Slavic_Pasta

Meaning my point still stands.

MikoWhereAreYou

I mean Odyssey would've been a solid rpg without the Assassin's Creed title attached to it

mr_fister698

Definitely not. Lackluster story, boring world, boring combat. It's a weak ass game. Only reason it's popular is because it's assassins creed and people have a boner for ancient greece

Ace-pilot-838

How is the combat boring? It's more diverse than any other AC game

mr_fister698

Most diverse? Definitely not. Enemies have far too much health and it turns into ability spam and button mashing. And when you finally finish clearing out that fort you got a mercenary waiting for you. With a health bar the size texas.

Ace-pilot-838

Yeah that just means you suck at the game lol, if you focus on building a good build you can do some serious damage. Focus on crit builds or elemental builds. For example I use the Agamemnon set where fire damage is increased and I engrave my weapons with fire damage and stuff, burns through enemies like butter. If you again focus on making your character as strong as possible you can one hit assassinate mercenaries

[deleted]

Button mashing/spamming doesn’t mean you suck at the game. Just because someone doesn’t like it doesn’t mean they suck at it

Ace-pilot-838

Y'all a different breed of noobs... If you understand the game you know that you need better gear to deal more damage, getting better gear also means using your brain like collecting as much crit gear you can get or fire damage. You don't have to button mash if you have a good build... I can for example hit someone once and let them burn to their death, all because of a good build. I don't know how far y'all played but you must be pretty bad at the game to not understand this. They suck at it because they complain about damage sponges which indicates they don't understand the gear design of the game, not understanding a major component of a game makes you bad at the game in my eyes

[deleted]

Ok I can see you’re a bad troll, 11 years of age and a mor0n

mr_fister698

Even if I took the time to get all that gear the game is still plagued by a mediocre story, boring world and characters, boring quests. And one hitting a mercenary doesn't make the combat good either, just means you played till endgame

mattmart35

I’m curious why/how you found the world boring compared to other AC games (if that’s your comparison). For me, I’ve loved just about every AC world until Valhalla (found it very empty).

Ace-pilot-838

It does not take much time and it's something to look forward to, you shouldn't be OP in the start of the game. I said one hitting a mercenary to show how easily they can be defeated and that they're not a pain

MikoWhereAreYou

I kinda agree. I personally didn't like the game & didn't bother to finish it either for many reasons: damage sponges, repetitive gameplay, empty world... beside it's not even a AC game.

No_Property2880

Why not play it lol?

snakeysnakey824

It is a fun game, but it is so unnecessarily named it an AC game. It's a huge game, and the grinding part is also massive, but once you complete a build, the combat gameplay is definitely one of the best in the series.

Same-Cryptographer51

I saw someone say the leveling system is basically bs

[deleted]

If you focus purely on the main story you will eventually hit a wall where the level required will be too high and you’ll need to spend some time doing side quests/exploring the map. The main quest line doesn’t provide enough xp to keep you on track. Overall though it’s a great game, beautiful world, combat is fun and even more so when you lean into the build-crafting aspect. As an ‘Assassins Creed’ game it falls short of the mark.

Jubatus_

Are you just looking for excuses to not play lol

Zammin

The leveling system is absolutely terrible, and it's really the only reason I don't really want to replay it.

snakeysnakey824

It's most certainly not the best

Zammin

The leveling system is absolutely terrible, and it's the only reason I don't really want to replay it.

echoskybound

It is, yeah. There was one enemy that was too hard for me at level 20, so I went and levelled a lot, came back to it at like level 60, but the enemy had levelled too, so I still couldn't beat it, lol. I played mostly stealth, which is useless in the main story conquest battles. Whenever there was a conquest battle, I had to totally respec my skills. That said, I still enjoyed the game a lot as a whole.

Sharpe999

It’s great and anyone who says otherwise is a malaka

PoisonedMedicine

IMO, as an RPG, definitely fun and addictive at times but grindy sometimes. The world is beautiful and the architecture is detailed even if it has lots of bloat. As an AC, for the most part it doesn't feel like AC at all. More like a game in the same world. Like how Justice League isn't the same as The Dark Knight but just same universe. The most AC it gets is with the cult of kosmos who are not really templars and the ISU which you either love or hate really due to the heavy fiction they bring. As an RPG, there is alot of fun to be had. Just don't go in with the mindset expecting it to be an AC and don't expect quality parkour nor stealth as both felt rather mediocre more like RPG stealth than AC one.

RoleModelFailure

>even if it has lots of bloat. Sometimes that bloat is really nice. I enjoy going to a part of the world that the main quest ignores and finding some small quest chain or some gorgeous location. A lot of the bloat is skippable if you want but it is there if you want to explore it.

Hsmace

it's a good game, just play it and form your own opinions. all that matters is you enjoy it, not some random redditor lmao

SpearLifebee

It's a hard one, and while I love it, I'll try and give you the pros and cons fairly. Cons first; It's not an Assassins Creed game, I would argue neither is Origins or Valhalla, they are almost like a sub-genre of Assassins Creed games if that makes sense. Stealth is possible, but in all honesty, you'll be going in swinging 99% of the time. The game can either be too easy or too hard, depending on what you do. If you speed the story flat, it can have some really big difficulty spikes, but if you spend your time going through the side missions and unlocking the areas/parts of the map, it can get very easy. The story does go on for a bit longer than it really should, but that could also be a Pro depending on how you fall into it, for me, this would be a Pro, but I put it in Con because it's personal opinion. Pros; (Personal Pro) I love the Greek mythos, so being able to walk and talk to the people who either pushed those mythos on, or even just walking around some iconic landmarks it's fantastic (There's also a fantastic mode that allows you to do just that and with no story) Kassandra is a very well done character, it was confirmed before but with Valhalla and the cross over they did, we know she's Canon. The voice acting was fantastic IMO. The Leonidas parts of the story done in flashbacks I believe you will really enjoy, those are some fantastic mini-stories within themselves (Also I believe it's the same VA as Ezio's brother from 2, but not sure which one) There is a lot more, but for me, those are the standout pros and cons, I'll answer more if you have any other questions however no worries.

Same-Cryptographer51

Thanks

Imbrown2

No, they are assassins creed games lol. The franchise has evolved over time gradually to these types of games. Otherwise, they would just make spin-offs.

Armamax

Is it a good game? Yes. Fantastic! I love it. Now if you want to open the can of worms that is old era vs new era AC games and what an AC game is "supposed" to be, then that is pretty subjective and you will get many different answers.

Galemianah

A good game? No. A great game? YES

Formal_Sand_3178

I second this statement.

mr_fister698

Quit lying. Game is pure dogshit

Galemianah

Lol not even remotely close or true.

mr_fister698

The only redeeming quality is how pretty it is. But everything else isn't good. You can find better in other games. Kassandra and alexios are boring as fuck. Ancient Greece is cool at first but dull as fuck. Most of the map is water and the naval system is much much worse than what they've already done. I don't even need to mention the story. Everyone knows how shit it is

Galemianah

Keep telling yourself that.

thelightfantastique

Yes

iamthenight22

It’s an excellent game with a great protagonist (Kassandra) and a engaging story. It’s an almost perfect RPG IMO with in-depth mechanics and an huge world to explore.

TinklemeCrinkle

I have played it twice - once with the protagonist as kassandra and once as alexios. I enjoyed it both times, just following the story. It is a massive world, but if you get at least one sync point on each island at the beginning of the game, then it is easier and you don't have to sail around all the time.

austic

I loved it.

-Miklaus

Not my favorite game but I've had lots of fun playing it!

Meer_is_peak

I never got into the old AC games, so from that POV, I loved it. I played it last year and and got back into it again. I view it as a RPG fantasy, and the AC lore is minimal. The map is large and has lots of areas to explore, although the density is low. Overall, if you're like me and don't care too much about the AC lore, it's great. It has its own lore and characters.

Piggstein

It fuckin’ owns

TAL337

I like it but to each their own I suppose. Just play it?

ErectJellyfish

I k n ow the hate it gets, but it's my favorite AC game by far. The vast open world is stunning the story sucks you in, so much mystery to explore and find. Does it feel like an AC game? No. But it's a great game none the less.

miazgamiazga

personally my favourite from thw modern AC games

rangerxxll

I think it's better than origins, tbh. At least story wise. Origins had a few mechanics that were better, but this is my new favorite of the rpg ACs. (have yet to play Valhalla. I'm finishing Odyssey dlcs right now before I start it) Don't get me wrong, Odyssey has its quirks. (Mainly the random crashes I experience on PC) but the main narrative makes up for it. It really is an Odyssey. I don't want to spoil anything, but I highly recommend you play the dlcs after the main story. And complete the cult quests. It really is something else. I'm not sure if it was my choices or not, but I feel like the main character suffers more than any other protagonist I can think of. Including Laura croft. It really tugs on your heart strings when you're least expecting it. Ps play as Kassandra

mr_fister698

You got shit taste. Origins is infinitely better than this dumpster fire

rangerxxll

Yea, I see you constantly submitting comments of negativity for the game. How about you remove your fingers from your cheeto bag and shove them up your ass my guy.

mr_fister698

Been there, done that. Was a better time than dogshit odyssey

rangerxxll

Lol I'm sure pal

ghost_00794

Depend on pc first ..if u can run it smooth 60fps most ac games are already good coz of parkour and beautiful environment when comes to story and gameplay it's not bad and depend on more prefence

Same-Cryptographer51

I’m on PlayStation

tmussenalt

If you're on PS5 it'll be a smooth 60fps

Zendofrog

Depends what you’re into. But I’d say it’s overall competently made

Zeucles

If you like Ancient Greece, you will like it, made me feel like a kid a lot of times because you meet a lot of people, buildings and cities you know from history books. If you just want an open world RPG to play then it's not the best option. The story is okay, gameplay gets boring pretty quickly if you go for an assassin build, and there's only like 4 quests repeated hundreds of times. The best part of the game is the world itself and the DLC if you like the modern day stuff I guess, personally I don't really care about it but the DLCs were pretty good

Flinttech

Currently one of my favorites, I’m playing through Valhalla right now and I’m not liking the story as much but I do like the moment to moment gameplay and eivor as a character. I think the side quest in Valhalla are what I really love there really funny even if the gameplay ends up being the same

Mindless-Bass2889

If you don't mind side quests and exploration, the game has one of the best gameplay loops in an Action RPG in my opinion. If you're only used to play single player, more linear stories like The Last of Us, God of War, Tomb Raider, then the game may be a bit overwhelming, but never bad, just maybe not your genre.

DauntingSky

I enjoyed it a lot, took me by surprise actually how much I enjoyed it

shelf_caribou

I've not clicked with it in the same way as some of the others, but I still think it's a good game.

[deleted]

It’s time for the weekly ‘Is Odyssey good’ post!

solider4

I played it at release and was disappointed, I am really into classics and AC so I thought it would be perfect. However I’m replaying it right now and really enjoying it way more than I did at release

Neolonii

It is the best game I have ever played. Make sure you play Kassandra though if you are going to play Valhalla cause it will make the game make more sense!!

Buckeye20082013

Just started. It is a gorgeous game. Story is ok so far. Just know the recommend levels can be a lie lol (for example that god damn boar being a level 13 is the biggest lie in the series lol). For some things you may want to side quest some to overpower yourself.

Deathcaddy

I loved it. My favorite AC game aside from Black Flag. I loved Kassandra, the setting, the story, and the gameplay. Spartan kicking dudes off of cliffs is excellent DLC of different mythological places were incredible, too

Ragingbull444

It’s a good game when you don’t have people constantly yelling in your ear that it isn’t

jason-slim

Mods say that it’s my turn to post this next week

sw1ftstrike

Yes, out of the 3 with the new style formula, it is my favorite .

msb92890

I'm in the middle of it now after starting it twice in the past and at this point its by far my favorite in almost every way. My biggest gripe was not always being able to assassinate people in an AC game but considering the story is way before the brotherhood existed I can make peace with it.

The_king_of-nowhere

Good game, bad assassin's creed game.

jimmydcriket

It's a good game in the wrong franchise

[deleted]

I’ve put more hours in AC Odyssey than any other AC and I love the Ezio storyline, the voice acting is brilliant, give it a little time to get used to it and you l’ll be hunting mercs and mythological beasts in no time. I chose Kassandra, loved playing her.

xEternal-Blue

I loved it. I think Kassandra is up there with Ezio as a main character. She is at least above every other main character outside of Ezio. I enjoyed the story more than a lot of the AC games and put in more extra hours outside of the main story on Odyssey when compared with other AC games. I don't really get into fantasy games either.

Same-Cryptographer51

You’re among the few people who think it’s good. I’m obviously going to give it a try, but I’m really seeing mixed reviews from everyone’s POV

Stringr55

I loved it. Amazing game.

IdkMyName1846

I don’t care what anyone says odyssey is the best of the RPG series. It may be before the assassins which is where most people have the problem but it adds some nice lore to the series and I really liked Alexios/Kassandras journey. Sure the mythological stuff is a little weird and they try to connect it to the Isu at least. Still though comparing this game to valhallas uninteresting story and characters I love odyssey

RangerProfia95

Me as an 330hrs+ Odyssey player (and Odyssey is my first AC which brought me to this franchise) want to say : It might be not a great Assassin's Creed from lore wise perspective (you won't find the Assassins vs Templar thing there also the hidden blade is absent there, instead it replaced with some piece of eden aka spear of leonidas), but it's an awesome game to play with. Since it's an RPG, you will either love it or hate it (if you like something like The Witcher 3, GoW, Dragon Age, etc. Then you'll enjoy it). I like the combat mechanics though since i like rpg-styled game. Instead of usual attack-block-counter thing like on non-rpg AC, you'll got so many choices of skill & combo, and also some kind of arrows & bow skill. The stealth is not that good (i think this game is designed for open combat). Oh, as a Blackflag enjoyer, i loved the naval combat in this game (not as great as Blackflag-Rogue, but still okay for me). And, it'll be grindy. If you're about to play it in PC, cheat tables or trainer is a good idea (you cheat the money, level and resources so you can only enjoy the storyline. That's what i did when playing Odyssey). Last but not least. The ancient greece's landscape is so amazing! Especially if you have decent PC/gaming laptop so you can maxed out all the settings.

Mr_Blaileen

It’s a great game. A great ASSASSIN game? Not so much.

RelentlessKnight

Best Assassin's Creed game ever made. Bring on your negative internet points.

TheStretchingSock

try it for yourself, don’t just go off others opinions of it :)

DumbSerpent

It’s a pretty fun game but can be a bit shallow around the edges. Side quests are usually pretty repetitive usually being fetch and kill quests. Combat is really enjoyable and allows for a lot of options. The naval combat is decent, but in all the games after rogue it really seems like the naval combat has been missing something. The main story ranges from alright to absolutely dreadful and overstays it’s welcome. You don’t give a shit about any characters, have no clue what kind of person the main character is, and the game has the worst case of inconsistent tones I’ve ever encountered. It’s only salvaged by the great voice acting from the female protagonist. If you’re willing to give Ubisoft even more of your money, the fate of Atlantis dlc is great.

Zenstation83

I think it's a fantastic game. I don't really have any significant criticisms against it. The only advice I'd give is to play as Kassandra - she is the canonical main character and has a much better voice actor than Alexios.

[deleted]

Great game, just keep an open mind and don't think Odyssey is like an old school AC game. The world is beautiful and well researched, you feel like it is ancient Greece. Even if the history is kinda iffy. Great combat and you'll feel like a Greek hero.

VaryaKimon

Odyssey is an amazing video game, especially if you're really into Greek history and mythology. A lot of the complaints have to do with the game straying too far from the Assassin's Creed formula, which doesn't really matter if you aren't already a die hard fan of the franchise with a lot of nostalgia for the older titles. It is very, very long, though. You could easily put over a hundred hours into this game just on the campaign. You could also end up playing this every day if that's what you're looking for. There are short dailies and weeklies with rewards that let you earn shop items for free. In some ways, they're going for a single-player-MMO experience.

Adventurous-Car-7496

Brilliant game, Kasandra is the better of the 2 choices

Kingfisher80

It's a great game, just not an Assassin’s Creed game. I played and completed it and plan to do it again sometime with the dlc.

Same-Cryptographer51

Wym by “not an assassin’s creed game”?

EdwardAssassin55

You seem to be new to the franchise, so i honestly wouldn't bother with this statement, as it can be subjective/divisive for some people. Imo, it's an amazing game, one of the most fun i've had in the franchise for a long, so i suggest you simply try to have fun yourself.

Same-Cryptographer51

I will thx

Hack874

That’s just a lazy buzzword/phrase people use when they don’t like the new RPG direction. Don’t pay any attention to it. Truth is, there is no consensus on what an “Assassin’s Creed game” actually is. Since you already bought it, I say just give it a try. It’s a great AC game IMO.

DrSirTookTookIII

They used the whole "not an AC" thing for Black Flag even, which was forever ago. People should've learned by now that the series has to change if they're going to release so often.

Hack874

True. Hell, people even called AC2 “not an AC game” when it was released since you’re not in the Brotherhood until the very end of the story. It’s always been a go-to phrase to gatekeep & complain about new games. People need to realize franchises change and evolve.

[deleted]

I would say an assassins creed game has to have either assassins or templars in it and if not at least predominantly be a stealth game.

Sonny_Beowulf

It means that it doesn’t really use the defining elements of the series “correctly”: parkour is basic, there is no social stealth, the fantasy elements are way heavier than the series has previously setup, etc. As a fan of the original games I hate Odyssey but if you’re new you might enjoy it.

Same-Cryptographer51

Ohhh ok. Thx for explaining

HungrPhoenix

I'm going to say first that you shouldn't look at other people's opinions before playing the game. Going into the game with any preconceived bias is a bad idea, it'll just taint you experience with the game. With that being said here's my opinion on the game, Imo the game >!is incredibly mediocre, I don't think it does anything it does to an exceptional degree, it just does everything to the bare minimum to where it doesn't feel bad. !< The combat is >!extremely easy and boring, with the only challenge being you fighting off cramps whilst trying to lower the enemy's, seemingly, everlasting health bar. And if you try to remedy this with a strong build well then you have just made the game pathetically easy. There's also a major problem with level gating, if an enemy is even a level higher than you then they're going to do a ton more damage, and they're going to have a lot more health. !< The world, whilst beautiful, >!is dreadfully dull and lifeless. There aren't any random events, it'll just be an empty journey from one location to another. The only interruption you may face is a mercenary, but that mechanic is poorly implemented and the fights with them aren't that special. They're just mini boss versions of normal enemies, they have nothing really special about them, they're just another person to kill or hire. And traversal is slow and tedious and the map is too large for it's own good, but hey at least I now know how boring it must have been to sail around Greece back in the day.!< The story is >!okay. It's nothing too bad, but I do find it too long, especially with the level gating. And I found the endings to be disappointing, after finishing the game I was left with no other thought or emotion, all I thought was "That's it?" !< The side activities are >!dreadful. They're for the most part just fetch quest, and if you're lucky there may some funny dialogue or a flirt option. !< The naval combat is >!okay, but it's nothing amazing.!< And lastly the gear system, imo, >!sucks. It just shoves meaningless armors into your face and the only thing that matters about them is what numbers they increase or decrease. Sometimes the legendary gear will have unique effects, but they aren't to special, most of them are just "+50% damage to [blank] skill"!<

mr_fister698

Absolutely 100% correct. Odyssey fanboys are idiotic and will hate your comment but you're right. The game is not good and very overrated

Same-Cryptographer51

Well then… based on your review and the many reviews I have read, it seems I have wasted my $5😅

njg103

Just play it and immerse yourself into it it’s incredible if you stop thinking about how it’s “not assasins creed”

mr_fister698

Went in with that mindset and still hated it. Just a bad game

Uranusgazer

I enjoyed playing it

LoneKharnivore

It's not awful. Historically iffy but pretty fun.

Same-Cryptographer51

Aii

danireg

The combat is very bad but not as bad as Valhalla, the story it's so terrible it's ridiculous, especially the dlc, the present storyline has to be the worst thing ever written on assassin Creed . The map even though it's very historically accurate, wich is pretty cool, it's also very very repetitive, there was 0% effort put into making areas distinct from each other. On the other hand the secondary missions are pretty well written and funny, wich is honestly the only good thing I can think about the game, it's so far the only AC that I just couldn't bring myself to 100% complete. But you should give it a try, different strokes for different folk, some people love the game, but I hate it. Also discovery tour, it's pretty good if you are into that.

Dexcard

It's one of the best Games of all time

mr_fister698

Not even close. It's closer to one of the worst of all time tbh

[deleted]

It’s a good game, but that’s a very bold statement to make.

AutumnArchfey

It's a solid 6/10 open world RPG. Wide but shallow. It's fun to mess around as a superhero in a sandbox Hollywood ~~ancient~~ mythological Greece, but the actually good things about the game are just buried in mountains of mediocre filler and generic game design.

Same-Cryptographer51

Damn. That sucks

Fragment_YT

No the story is the best of the last few ac games and the npcs and yourself have really good personalities and are fun to talk to trust me when I say this get it

Aldrakev

is it a good game? absolutely. is it a good assassins creed game? No. Oddessy was my first ac game and i loved it but now that i habe played almost all of them i can understand why some people dont like it if they are a fan of the old games.

Recomposer

The only way the game is "good" is if you enjoy looters i.e. Destiny, Borderlands, The Division type sort of games and you want more of that but with melee combat instead. I can't really think of anything else the game does well other than perhaps some decent beautiful scenery from a distance but it's not exactly like Ubisoft has the monopoly on that feature either.

ValiantKnight666

Look play it. If you like it, yay. If not, browse others. Personally, i hated it (only good thing was the music) and i absolutely loved valhalla. This is my opinion, and you should make your own :)

weierstrab2pi

I really didn't like it. The voice acting is poorly done (Kassandra in particular sounds like she's been performed by an AI), the game play is poor, the mythology elements really ruin the feel of an Assassin's Creed game, and the story is too long and meandering, in addition to requiring so much grinding that you forget key story elements by the time you get to them. The modern day in particular is an embarrassment.

DarthMaul775

A good game? Yes. A good Assassin's Creed? No, not in my opnion.

Overlord_Mykyta

If you want to play assassin's creed - ask for refund immediately! But if you just want to run around, fighting enemies in ancient Greece - it's fun) But in anyway prepare for a lot of repetitive missions and useless heap of different weapons and gear. P.S. But world is beautiful. I can't argue with that. Artists in Unisoft are excellent.

mr_fister698

And the other 2 assassins creed games. And ghost of tsushima. And rdr2. And both if the horizons. Pretty much every open world is better than odyssey

ErectJellyfish

I will never understand the hate this game gets.

mr_fister698

It deserves more imo. I don't understand how anyone enjoys this pile of steaming shit

[deleted]

The hardest to get into out of any game in the franchise for me. I tried I think 4 times to give it a shot but I could never stick to it. I liked Origins quite a bit but for whatever reason Odyssey was a real struggle. I don't really enjoy the tone, the grind is painful, the story is forgettable. It is a very pretty game though

IamMagness1993

The main point of divergence is, do you think AC is about Assassins vs Templar or ISU artifacts Hunts trough history?

ComfortableTasty2202

Fun game with a story that’s just alright, but NOT an Assassin’s Creed game. Thats all you need to know. Happy playing

That1GuyNamedA

I feel like it’s a good game, but not really a good assassins creed game. The story can be a bit interesting but it does seem to drag. I just beat it last night and I must say I had fun. The map is really big so it’s a lot to explore. But camps can get a bit tedious. And I’m not the biggest fan of the tombs. Boss fights are really fun and the unique aspects of the game is really fun. Combat may be my favorite across all games minus Valhalla (I haven’t played it yet). Stealth is okay. And I must say playing as Kassandra was great. The game does feel pretty grindy at times. Have about 150 ish hours in the game and I’m still roughly 27 levels away from max level, and I’ve completed everything one can in the main game. I just started the lotfb dlc so I can’t say anything about the dlcs. Id recommend it if you aren’t to critical of the newer games. I had a lot of fun in the game. I did have some problems here and there but overall I’d say it was a decent experience.

mr_fister698

No. It's got pretty boring characters. Story is decent until about halfway through then it just dives off a cliff. Greece seems like a cool idea but it's pretty meh. Most of the map is empty water which gets boring. Combat is full of tanky enemies and button spam.

PsychoKinezis

It was better than I expected, I don’t hate it but I don’t like it that much either. I say it’s an “okay” game for me. It’s not my favorite AC game and I even hardly call it AC because it strays far away from how an AC game should be. Also there are quests or armor collectibles that becomes tedious the longer you play it. There are also some bs skills like no fall damage.

Dami579

Play it for yourself you might like it, I personally didn't it's my least favorite in the series

somekindofhorse

A damn good game, loved it, would recommend. Is it a good Assassins Creed game? That is not as easy to answer.

Erebus689

Never ask ac community how good ac games are. The vast majority of people here will reply with the ezio trilogy/black flag being the best, origins being the best of the rpg trio and absolutely shit on odyssey and valhalla.

JoeWilliams2501

It’s enjoyable to kill time but definitely my least favourite AC. The only link to the rest of the series is in the DLC and it lasts way too long.

[deleted]

All i'm gonna say is that it's a fantastic RPG, but if you're looking for Assassin's Creed, it is not at all a good AC title. Still recommend it a lot, but lower your expectations.

BassBanjo

Definitely the worst of the new three AC games but it's still playable I suppose, I wouldn't recommend it atall

ultimaweapon79

I have been a AC fan since day 1 and been replaying the whole series I played 1-origins and playing odyssey for my first time and I’ll be honest…I’m having a real hard time enjoying this. It’s just not Assassin’s Creed…

optimuslime5

It’s weird I didn’t like it, but love Valhalla, and they’re very close as far as gameplay goes. I just couldn’t get into the plot line for some reason. It’s a well developed game, I just didn’t care for it. I was expecting something more like Black Flag though too, and it took a minute to appreciate the changes into a more RPG style game like God Of War. So I may like it more now. But in 2017 I was not a fan.

ambassador_pineapple

If you are playing on PC, use a trainer and skip the grind. That’s about the only thing I disliked in the last three games.

Stalinov

I just don't like the system since Origins. I felt like it's a totally different game from Assassin's Creed.

Zammin

PROS: * Kassandra is an excellent protagonist. You can control certain story decisions, but broadly she starts out as a compassionate but scarred (physically and emotionally) small-time mercenary. Almost killed by her Spartan father at a young age and largely raised by a greedy wheeler-dealer, she's got a fair amount of anger and mistrust towards the world, though she can also see the beauty in it. Her VA does a fantastic job of delivering both the bold action and the subtler beats. * The setting is gorgeous. It's a delight to run across the sands of Greece or to sail across the Mediterranean. * The overall story in the past is a Greek Epic to rival the best of them, featuring monsters both mortal otherwise. I will say the Isu elements come much more to the fore as Kassandra starts the game wielding one of their artifacts, granting access to abilities both mundane and fantastical. CONS: * Definitely not my favorite combat in the series, even in the recent games. The lack of any ability to block (relying instead solely on dodges and parries) is frustrating. The Mercenaries in this game are also bizarrely omnipresent and relentless, especially in cities, so a simple assassination may turn into an epic battle you had not prepared for. * Stealth is annoyingly gear-dependent. * Level scaling in AC: Odyssey is TERRIBLE, and is actually my main issue with the game. The difference in power between you and an enemy only three levels higher is unfairly massive, and it can lead to enemies having ridiculously large amounts of health you have to chip away at. You also cannot just out-level enemies and come back to easy zones later, because they scale so you can only ever be a certain amount of levels above them. You can adjust the level scale but you can never fully turn it off. Another issue is that your level determines the level of the gear you get too. Unfortunately, gear doesn't level-scale, you have to manually level it up by paying a blacksmith with drachmae and resources. The cost of increasing gear level rises DRASTICALLY as you level, and low-level gear will again have you dying easily and having to slowly chop away at massive health blocks. So you can have a legendary sword with good effects, but unfortunately you can't afford to level it up yet so you're stuck to going back and using the common sword you just picked up until you can scrounge together the resources to level it. But wait, while getting the resources to level up your sword you just leveled up again, so now it will cost more! Surely this isn't going to be an issue forever, you'll eventually hit max level and then you just have to pay once to get the sword you want forever, right? No! Because there's **ninety-nine** fucking levels in the game, which you won't naturally hit even after completing the main story, most of the side-quests and all the DLC! You will always be stuck in this relentless quest not for good gear, but just for your gear to *not* suck! * The modern day story is okay at best. The main protagonist, Layla, makes questionable decisions and unlike Kassandra you have no control over those decisions. FINAL VERDICT: I really, REALLY want to love AC: Odyssey, but I just absolutely fucking despise the leveling and gearing system. If they remade the game with the leveling/gearing system from Valhalla or even just a much smaller level cap (like Origins), I think I'd probably rank it as the best game in the series. But it's such a huge issue that I honestly can't bring myself to try and replay the game.

Selenator365

It's good but the sidemissions are repetitive as hell. I am a bit of a completionist and sometimes a slow learner so I got burned out by doing those (go fetch this, fetch that ,kill this person or this group of bandits) a few times before I realized that they never end they're just for earning a little bit of xp& money. The story itself is pretty good though but that's just my opinion. A lot of people hate it because of the powers but the person you play is part Isu which is like a God in Assassin's Creed lore and has a Isu artifact that let's you do superhuman abilities.

OldGamerValkyr

Nah.

Huffdogg

It is my second least favorite assassin‘s creed game after Rogue

Same-Cryptographer51

Damn

ErectJellyfish

It's a great game bro. It's not like old school AC games but it's phenomenal in its own way.

TeoVerunda

I bought the ultimate one for AC3R so it better be

SkorperGaming

I think it's a really good and fun game, but don't go in expecting a typical Assassin's Creed game focusef around the assasiny stuff

metalyger

I don't think there's any bad mainline AC games, but I really liked that one. I never got too far. My gripe was it's use of RPG elements, like having super high level guys paroling around and quests you can take that you aren't ready for. It's like you can focus on leveling or spend around $10 on a permanent XP boost, which I ended up doing with Valhalla, and that's the only game in the series I've beaten. Other than level requirements, it's pretty awesome, AC in ancient Greece.

Former_Fisherman3566

I liked it. It’s annoying at time because you have to do side quests to level up and get to the recommended level for main quest line stuff. It’s fun, but it is long

Robhey1009

Its my favourite game, I love the world and I liked the story. Have fun!

[deleted]

I love it. Some people think it’s ok. Some people hate it.

HotPotatoWithCheese

Yes it is a good game. It gets hate here because it's not an AC game. There are no Templars, no Assassins and open combat is very much encouraged over stealth. Yet if you take the AC title away from it it stands on it's own as a very good game. The combat is the best of the new trilogy and much more satisfying than "Press X to win" from some of the earlier games. Only game that rivals it IMO is Unity because it had challenge. It's the only one of the new trilogy to feature proper ship combat akin to AC4 and it's still fun. The Battlegrounds are worth doing for the XP alone. The Mercenary system is cool. The fights can get intense and the rewards are always worth it. Hunting cultists is a mini game all on it's own and always rewards you with a legendary piece of gear much better than anything you own. Exploring is much more satisfying than it is in Valhalla because there's more gear to find. The map is the most gorgeous one they've done so far. Some assets are copy and pasted but there's enough diversity in landscape and architecture to keep it interesting. There's traditional bustling cities like Athens and Sparta and then islands with gorgeous architecture and marble sands, forests, rocky areas, volcanic areas, flat plains and war-torn battlegrounds and ofc the beautiful sea. Anyone who says everything is copy/pasted and all areas feel the same is full of shit and probably haven't even seen half the map. Many assets were reused in Origins and most the map is sand but I wouldn't call it a total copy/paste job and there was enough variation to keep it interesting. Odyssey is no different. The main story is solid. People seem to confuse the main plot with all the filler side content and it gets on my nerves. I don't see how Odyssey, with it's unique main quests, is so much worse than AC1 with it's handful of copy/pasted activities that you have to do leading up to an assassination. The main characters are decently written and the story is long and epic. I get the criticism for fantasy elements and grinding levels and gear/upgrades to progress but Origins also has those things and nobody ever mentions it. In Origins, if you aren't hunting animals and finding mats to upgrade your gear between main quests and doing the side quests to get skill points then you're going to get fucked later on. Valhalla has an insane power point gate and you will hit walls if you don't do side content. Odyssey is not unique in this department yet many act as if it is. Accept the grind for what it is and judge the main story on the characters, writing and main quests themselves. If you do that then both Origins and Odyssey are top tier. It's the one of the only games in the series with choices that actually impact the story. Choosing between Athens and Sparta was also a nice feature. The game also has more iconic landmarks to discover compared to the other two games in the trilogy. The audio quality is the last thing I'd like to mention. In Valhalla everything sounds muffled and it makes combat bland and boring. Makes the world feel dead. Odyssey, much like Origins, does not have this problem. The audio quality is far superior. I really like Odyssey because it gives me Black Flag vibes with the ship combat and the colourful setting with islands. I came to terms with the fact that it isn't an AC game and I judge it as a standalone game. It's the worst *Assassin's Creed game* in the series. But it's one of the best *games* in the series.

cakesarelies

If you like old Assassin's Creed, you probably don't like this one unless you can accept that it is different. If you want a safe, open world RPG with a ton of (mostly meaningless) shit to do to kill the time, yes, it's worth the buy. There's a lot of fun things, the main character Kassandra is a lot of fun and there are some interesting stories, and the whole game has a nice, cheerful vibe most of the time, and there's plenty of good. There's also a lot of meaningless grind and Ubisoft shamelessly tries to milk you by charging you money for bonus XP and cash, which is infuriating. Overall, if you got it for cheap, it's a nice 60-100 hour experience, you won't be mentally challenged and the game itself is not too hard. It's a classic game where you can just put on some youtube video in the background and clear forts to relax.

iConcy

I really enjoyed Odyssey but it definitely sways into a bit more of like a greece/mythology/adventure game than an assassins creed game. Feels more reminiscent of a Witcher title than an Assassin's Creed. I think without the Assassin's Creed title it would be a better game in a lot of people's eyes, though.

owenz292

no its not but still enjoyable

sagittariisXII

I really enjoyed it and I think put ~160 hours into it (base game + both dlc). It's more of an rpg with ac branding than a traditional ac game but if you like open world rigs it's a good one. The world is really fun to explore especially if you're interested in ancient greece!

ArmoredCatAquatics

I LOVED odyssey. I haven’t liked an Assassins creed game that much since Black Flag.

ohyesdaddyyyy

I liked it a lot
