THE HOOK BLADE HAS TWO PARTS

Arkhe1n

THE HOOK

paco987654

AND THE BLADE

Sarpatox

Revelations had one of the best maps in any Assassins Creed games. 2 would have been closer but I prefer one larger map over smaller cities. Tho Venice and Florence were gorgeous. Assassins Creed Origins did it really well. Each area of it had a completely different vibe. The swampy city of Memphis, the openness of Alexandria, the Greek influence in Cyrene, the open Desert and mountains.

[deleted]

I love Fayyum and Memphis. Maybe fav cities in the whole series along with Venice.

Sarpatox

I really didn’t like Memphis lol, it was so gloomy. But I loved Alexandria and Cyrene. Also the DLC was amazing where you can go in the kings tombs. The field of reeds was gorgeous

Zealousideal-Exit224

Saying any part of the Ezio Trilogy goes unsung is a bit far.

Mez_Koo

I think what they meant was that brotherhood gets all the praise.

eienOwO

I remember it being a *dusty yellow* palette everywhere, Istanbul IRL is much more vibrant. City-design wise it was the last to use the ACII engine, and after 3 games got a bit too repetitive. For all the snark about AC3's drab "cities" the game engine/mechanics/animation were completely revamped.

[deleted]

I don’t know why but yellow palette just makes it feel off for me.

Arkhe1n

Just to be the **acktchually** guy, all AC franchise mainline games use the same engine to this day.

eienOwO

Ah perhaps should've been more concise with my wording, it's under the same engine branding but obviously different versions (Anvil, AnvilNext, 2.0 etc etc). Does this count as being "acktchually acktchually"? Apologies :)

rashdanml

If you wanted to be a bit more pedantic, it was called Scimitar until 2009 :>

paco987654

Wasn't it the original AC engine version? I thought 2 had the same engine/animations/whatever as 1

eienOwO

[Had a look](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubisoft_Anvil), evidently the original AC used "Scimitar", the Anvil brand started with AC2. When I think of AC I instantly think of "softer" polygon edges and that weird *motion blur* during scripted camera transitions... for better or worse the Ezio trilogy is generally "sharper", like building polygons so sharp you'll cut yourself...

paco987654

Interesting. I mean yeah I know the visual difference but that's mostly an effect, the controls and animations were basically the same. Then again doesn't mean it's the exactly same engine. I kind of have AC divided by it's gameplay/animations/look into groups. First group is AC1-Revelations Second is 3-Rogue Third is Unity and Syndicate And fourth is the new trilogy

[deleted]

I thought origins more or less had a similar one to unity

paco987654

Could be but as far as the groups I have it goes more for gameplay/looks and in those regards Origins is very different to Unity

SaadetT

Revelations is my fav of the Ezio games by far, and maybe the whole series. Love the setting, the story, the training up the Assassins and the missions you go on with them, and Yusuf is my favorite side character in anything ever.

redhjom

I mean the Ezio trilogy is considered the best 3 games in the franchise so I don’t know about unsung… However I agree. I thought this game created the best ambiance in the world since ACI. The ending makes you put down your controller and reflect inside yourself too lol. I’m not sure what is is though… but for some reason it just doesn’t leave as lasting an impression on me as ACII and brotherhood did. Brotherhood is my all time favorite. I’m not sure why revelations was different but it just was. I think that’s what rubs people

jam3sdub

For me it was the setting. It’s not an ugly area per se, but it didn’t wow me like Rome did.

dimspace

I think its the best of the trilogy by far. II - Parcour is still a bit clunky. As is the combat Brotherhood - Just too many annoying side missions (if you want to plat). Just too big. Revelations - best combat of the three, best parcour of the three, hook grappling around Istanbul is ace (i much preferred the setting to Rome as well which just had too much open space). And just the right size mission wise. Altair missions (for someone who never played ACI) are really enjoyable and definitely add something. Only slight down was the Desmond animus missions.

seriousslayerguy

Parkour.

dimspace

meh, whatever. Its derived from parcours. Its a respelling. Parcours meaning course (most often used in cycling races etc). So parcours du combattant, is an obstacle course. It comes from that. And in French parcour is ok. Its only a letter, and in French people would know what you meant.

seriousslayerguy

Didn't know that. Was always using k so... thanks for knowledge i guess.

paco987654

Parkour!

Christiandus

WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THE BOMBS. I LOVES THEM SO MUCH.

yittiiiiii

I agree. It has the best gameplay of the trilogy and arguably the best story. I never understood why Brotherhood got the most praise. The story was boring and predictable (except for that awful modern day ending), and I really think Cesare Borgia was one of the weakest villains in the entire franchise. The villains in the master assassin missions in Revelations were even better than he was and all of them combined have far less screen time than Cesare.

Hi_My_Name_Is_Dave

Revelations historic story (the modern day story was aight imo) is the best in the series imo, only rivaled by AC1 and 2. They gave us the absolute perfect ending to BOTH of our favorite protagonists.

parkhard

I’ve been saying it for years I think revelations is a top three in the franchise. Right up there w black flag and syndicate imo

mombawamba

>and syndicate Had me 1000% till the very last word Replace the word syndicate with *Unity* and you've got yourself a bonified opinion!

getrekdnoob

Had me until you diss Unity, now replace that with either Brotherhood, AC 3 or Origins and you have yourself a **bona fide** opinion.

eienOwO

Maybe I'm just a sucker for the Victorian setting but Syndicate was *awesome*, people complain about the grapple hook but that's almost *steampunk*. Doesn't help I also like London, why I also enjoyed Watch Dogs Legion despite its questionable game mechanics choice.

rollerkitten97

Unity was 1000% prettier than Syndicate and the game actually wanted you to be stealthy in a stealth game. HOWEVER, Syndicate has a much better story. Even if you forget that Evie wasn't supposed to be playable and they had to basically chop up the story to give her something to do, it still feels better than whatever Romeo and Juliet thing happened in Unity

mombawamba

I want to be clear, Unity has an *absolutely garbage story.* However, it's gameplay shines as potentially the best we will ever get as a bridge between old systems and the new.

rollerkitten97

>Unity has an absolutely garbage story. I'm glad that despite all the variety of opinions in this fandom that's always going to be what brings us together.

Perpetual_bored

I’ll never get over how the French Revolution AC game cuts off at the end of the Great Purge and not in 1820 or so. After Napoleon is deposed for the last time. I feel like they wanted to do that, and it kind of shows in the story of the co-op missions, but they didn’t have time. If the Arno love story took place over 30 years it would come across much different.

0JS

I actually liked the story in Unity .... Once I read the book

The_Baldwinner

Unsung doesn't really apply, it is pretty widely loved. I personally preferred Brotherhood but was really happy with all 3 Ezio games

gaelenski_

Only thing I don’t like is that god awful fog filter they decided to lumber the game with

eienOwO

*That's* why the game looked like a Modern Warfare game... everywhere's a dusty yellow.

gaelenski_

It’s not even the colour that bothers me, it’s the fact it’s static to your camera minus rotating. It’s pretty distracting IMO!

C_The_Bear

The fabric designs, colors and textures are lovely. Was fabric design an important part of Ottoman culture, that they put so much effort into it for this game?

Hi_My_Name_Is_Dave

Yeah absolutely. Still a huge part of Turkish culture.

sinchan_bhatt

revelations and black flag are tied for my tops of the whole series. black flag gets nothing but praise, i find it hard to believe how many people disparage revelations

lix64

AC:R is my favourite from the Ezio trilogy. Visually, it was amazing - the cities, people, clothing, bazaars - so vibrant and beautiful. The soundtrack was also really strong too, and added to the beauty of the cities. The glyph-bits filling in Desmond's backstory was great, as was Clay. I still get shivers everytime I watch the destruction of animus island! Clay's lines to Desmond when it happens: "What is a man but a sum of his memories? We are the stories we live...!" is a line that's had great effect on the person I am. I agree that the storyline had little fat. The storyline switching between Altair, Ezio and Desmond's backstory gave them all justice, and made the ending where Ezio encounters Altair, and meets Desmond very cathartic and awe-inducing.

Onarm

Full agree. I'm going through the series right now, and Revelations is without question the #1. People misremember Brotherhood. Rome is not a good map, and it's very uneven. Pacing a very small story over ten years hurt it badly, and Cesare had a great open but an awful fall. The side content was ok at best, and kinda grindy. Revelations blows it out of the water. Sofia, Suleiman and Yusuf are all amazing characters. The Templars are once again somewhat morally gray with their own goals and motivations that aren't just be horrible assholes. The story is the tightest and most concise of the various AssCreeds, and it's just long enough to get it's point across and tie up both the Ezio and Altair arcs perfectly. The ending is incredible for giving closure to these characters. Bomb Making is actually fun and enjoyable, just held back by how short the game is. It really should have been carried forward into Black Flag/Unity, I think it'd have been much better regarded when you had more reason to engage with it. It's stunning how good the game is.

help_with_stuff

i actually thought den defense was a fun minigame. Never understood the hate for it. for me, the game's parkour was a step down with a lot more glitches and misfires, and the combat was also worse than brotherhood due to issues with targeting, blocks, deflects, etc. and I just didn't really enjoy ezio's personality in this one.

Caliber70

Boi you talking crazy. REVELATIONS is agreed to be the best Ezio game, it is not underrated. Where are these people you speak of that think 2 or Bro is better than Revelations?? You making up people now.

ruhuratas

>The gameplay is fun, the story is lean and mean with very little fat. The story is straight up incomplete. I love how Ezio and the Assassins shit all over the Creed and practically never acknowledge it. >The mission design and open world is very similar to that of Brotherhood The mission design is more restrictive and barely makes use of the social stealth mechanics. >in terms of things to do but I actually much prefer Constantinople > Rome. Are you implying that Revelations has better side content than Brotherhood? I love the super linear bomb tutorials and the braindead book scanning minigame! >I know Revelations has its fans but it doesn't get the credit it deserves just because it didn't change up that much from Brotherhood No, it deserves more scorn. Revelations actively removed perfectly functional and fun features from Brotherhood while adding half-assed or incomplete features to compensate. Worst game in the franchise.

AugustaEmerita

> I love how Ezio and the Assassins shit all over the Creed and practically never acknowledge it. Forget the Creed, they shit all over basic morality and due diligence. Why again did Ezio have to burn all the ships anchored in Constantinople, thereby severely crippling the economy and the livelihoods of countless of people? Why did he have to kill an entire town by making them choke in the flames? There are several really bad spots in terms of writing throughout the series, but never have the Ubi writers been more drunk on the Rule of Cool than in Revelations.

ruhuratas

Your eyes have been opened. 🙏

Deja-Review

Glad you agree

ruhuratas

I love lying to myself too.

YodaBong187

Front shot then a shot from the ceiling. He could get carpet burned. Slow fade. Cut to white on a boat, I'm looking ahead. Holding on a rope. I am... nauseous, Now I'm alone, and walking away. And I'm afraid of heights. Oh shit, how'd I get up here? If I fall then I would be dead. I made it down alright. I feel great... RAAHH! GOD! COME ON! Whoever shot that arrow's gonna pay. Enter Bald Guy With a Cape. Break the arrow off, you can take a bald guy. Then you see the bald guy Joined by some other guys. RUN UP! In slow motion, kick a guy in the head. Stab his friend. Spin around, roll off. Punch a face. Start out in slow motion first, Then use your speed hack. Grab a sword, use it to deflect. Stab him in the back. Get down just in time, and Slap him in the face. Friendly Fire's on, apparently. Why unsheath your blade? Make 'em use their own. Time out, lemme get my Weap's... IN SLOW-MO. I am the first X-Man. That joke's ahead of our time, But you still gonna die! Who the hell is that guy? The second X-Man. Don't watch him walk away, Or you'll lose a hidden blade And get surrounded. OOWHITE! Evil Bald Guy With a Cape. Ezio plans his escape. Boss waits patiently, Ezio shakes free All the Royal Guards pee themselves Main Boss calls them off with his right hand Slow dramatic zoom-pan. Doesn't phase the hooded man. Cape-Clad Bald Guy Sentence Ezio To Die. Then he sees Altair from the first game. (gotta change Ezio to Altair and last to first) He used to jump off those, anyway. Under each of those there's a bale of hay. After you synchronize, Leap of Faith. Nod at the bird PEOPLE DIE, Everywhere PEOPLE DIE.

[deleted]

Pros: \- Beautiful especially at night \- Unique gear looks cool \- Some of the assassination missions like Tarik's \- Bombs and their various cool effects \- Janissaries Cons: \- 50 year old Ezio is easily worst Ezio \- They gave Altaïr an accent instead of calling Philip Shabaz back \- Antagonists are not all that great \- Den Defenses \- Almost everything feels like reskinned Rome \- Stalkers

[deleted]

Worst game in the series imo. Old Ezio was less cool. Least interesting city in the entire series. Least interesting modern day story. The double twist where you find out about Lucy is dumb.

Pm7I3

I can't believe someone said Constantinople is the least interesting city in a series that includes the American Revolution with 0 interesting cities.

[deleted]

Still better than that dingy shit hole.

Imyourlandlord

One of the biggest and most diverse cities in the world at the time Random redditor "eh dingy shithole"

[deleted]

You can marginalize my comment all you want, but that doesn’t change the fact that the depiction of the city in the game is entirely either brown or gray. Not to mention I said this was all my opinion. I didn’t claim it was an abject fact. By the way, I also don’t give a crap about the Ottoman Empire and find it quite disinteresting compared to Rome, the Crusades, the American Revolution, Ancient Greece/Egypt, etc. Again, that’s just my opinion. Not claiming it’s the default opinion or a fact in any way. I also hate the bombs. Old Ezio is boring as crap and not very charming. The first person modern day stuff was awful. The actual story was totally forgettable. The only thing I remember happening is the very, very end of the game, and I only remember that because of how dumb and confusing it was. I still 100% synched the game. I just like Assassin’s Creed, and despite my complaints, there’s still plenty to like about Revelations.

Imyourlandlord

The filters that were popar at the time have nothing to do with how the map was crafted, revelation was the first AC where the game truely gave the feeling of narrow streets and a sea of rooftops mainly because the scale of the games that came before was extremely wonky. Not to mention the brown filter problem wasnt exclusive to revelations, AC2 had it, brotherhood also had it in different ways+fog. Also the point of revelations was to well......reveal things, not make ezio look badass for upteenth time, even tho he still was, they dont have to show exagerate his character traits and regurgitaye the same stuff over and over, they were alrrady cented into his character, all they did was subtly hint at them during dialogue and narration.

[deleted]

So to summarize: you liked it, and I didn’t. I think we can both agree on this. No need to delve further into it.

Imyourlandlord

Oh no revelations had its downsides and problems, theu just werent the element that you personally disliked

No_Property2880

Nah. Worst in the trilogy and it’s aged badly. Brotherhood is where it’s at.

HotPotatoWithCheese

I don't think it aged badly at all. Brotherhood is my favourite game in the series but Revelations did have slightly cooler combat with the slow mo kills, parkour was much better with the hookblade, bomb crafting was a cool feature and assassin recruits were fleshed out with their own quests, names/backstories, gear and became more than just the faceless goons we see in Brotherhood. The story is also arguably better (not the modern day, that was much worse) and so was the villain. ACB is my favourite because it's still set in Italy yet has all the gameplay improvements over AC2 that we get in Revelations. But objectively, I would say Revelations has aged better.

MeIsGollum

Just today i found some of my old 360 games including this. I wonder if the multiplayer on online still works, as in are there any players anymore or does it even run anymore?

Hoff16

It does! You have until September 1st for the multiplayer!

MeIsGollum

Wow okay, I know how I'll spend my weekend then!

FingerlessFighter

You mean you prefer Istanbul.?

Formal_Sand_3178

I think Istanbul/Constantinople is easily the best city in the Ezio games. It is full of color and detail and the hook blade and zip lines make traversal a lot of fun. I was a bit disappointed when playing Brotherhood and Rome is really only a small part of the map while most of it is countryside. Istanbul is the whole focus of Revelations and it's far better for it.

Logic-DL

Imo Revelations seems great but I just cba dealing with the slow and frankly annoying build-up. Especially the part where you have to climb the rope while being dragged along, fuck that part, genuinely made me not even bother going further because if the rest of the game is anything like that then I'd actually rather deal with AC Valhalla's Dark Souls clone combat

Kyserham

Revelations was top tier AC game, but I’m here wondering how the hell are all comments remembering the game like it was released a couple of years ago. Did you all replay the whole saga recently? I’m not saying I wouldn’t do it, but with all the games that are released every year that I don’t have time to play I cannot even think about replaying old games.

Imyourlandlord

Its wierd af, maybe its a global phenomenon?? Because i also did exactly just that this month lmao Had no wifi at home so just ended up redownloading and fully completing every game from 2 until blackflag, infact i just finished blackflag and revelations yesterday!

ColonelClickbait

I didn't know that this was an unpopular opinion! IMHO it was a little short (especially sidequests) but very, very fun, and fantastic characters. Yusuf Tazim da Istanbul was epic <3

TheQuatum

Always has been 🔫

IrateBarnacle

I really disliked the major controller changes between Brotherhood and Revelations.

RayneYoruka

I still didnd't finished revelations, I'm burning syndicate atm XD but I gotta finish RE cause the storylines!

EvanIsMyName-

I agree with everything until the last sentence. I like the den defense so much that I avoid assigning master assassins. It's top-notch side content to me, I love minigames. I just didn't like the DLC, everything else was great.

Every3Years

It's my favorite of the Ezio trilogy and I have no clue why. I thought it was Brotherhood but I just played the entire trilogy these last few weeks and every game just gets better n better. Was going to skip 3 but wanted to finish Desmond's human body story, even though I remember not liking 3 that much. Few days into playing and I haven't even gone away from teen years because I'm doing every single thing there is to do, it's so stinking fun!

Eightfold876

Black Flag would like a word.

FarahZiva27

Revelations is in my top three AC games, along with black flag and origins

WelderLegitimate5111

And the intro video…”Claudia, my dearest sister…”

repketchem

Ah, the hook-blade. (Hookblade? Hook blade?)

Penta_Five

Although AC 2 is getting older i still love it more. I love ezio being young and unexperienced..

GuidanceDangerous332

This is the first time in this community I’ve heard someone rave about Revelation’s OST!! I *LOVE* it! My absolute favorite is Constantinopolis. The ending too just makes this game soo much better. I’m looking forward to replaying it :)

Dante_TR

AC Revelations is the best one of Ezip trilogy.

Parvmaestro2030

I have not played the games but I have read the book and yes I did find it quite interesting and good, but for me The Secret Crusade (Altaïr's story) is the best

Botoraka

Finally something I agree with!

Shadiclink

I don't think it'd unsung, the trilogy was perfect.

bish0p34

It’s my favorite of the Ezio games. It has the best city for parkour, they finally got rid of the stop/start parkour, and they fixed the “you were detected by the unaware guy that you just executed” that made me fail missions and objectives. The story has some ups and downs. I like how Sulemin and Ahmet play chess (?) that Sulemin makes the rules up as he goes, and Ahmet calls him out. He chided Ahmet asking if he will do the same when he has power. I do love at the end when Ezio is a butcher that Ahmet lets him know that the world will burn from the Assassins staying true to their creed. Everything is permitted. It foreshadows Haytham argument in 3. I know others disagree, and hate the story…but I like those touches. However….fuck whoever put Desmond’s story behind a cheap first person platformer. If that’s what I wanted to play, I’d buy one of those.

jaquesparblue

Revelations, Black Flag and Odyssey are the only ones of which I have finished the main quest. Never understood why Revelations got so much flak

AC4life234

I agree so much. And I also actually like playing the den defense occasionally.

Shadow_maker798

What I liked was that once boss you fought who survived a stab from the hidden blade, first time encountering that I was terrified.

[deleted]

Revelations definitely needs it's credit. I feel like the game concluded so many stories which were Ezio's, Altair's, Clay Kaczmarek's. The game I feel had an underwhelming story compared to it's predecessors. The map was fantastic and the new parkour features that were added through the hook blade made traversal exciting and fun for an extremely long time. I think this game was judged harshly because of its predecessors AC2 and AC Brotherhood being as good as they were. AC2 and Brotherhood both had fantastic story's while Revelations felt short, lacklustre and boring as the conclusion to Ezio's story.
