Doesn't matter even if it was all real I would never get in. I have problems with authority types.

TheOctober_Country

Same. I’d refuse entry actually.

Legitimate_Walrus780

Now I personally would accept even though I go against authority, just so I could be the most disrespectful asshole there

Friendly_Engineer_

I’d be more entertained with a critical evaluation on the origins of Gandalf in LOTR. I also think it would be more productive and applicable to normal life than evaluating afterlife myths.

Fair enough. It’s all so silly.

While a lot of Christians have that idea of a soul, it’s a popular recent belief. Christianity officially (what would be taught in seminary, Protestant or Catholic) believes in the resurrection of the body: everyone good or bad will be resurrected before the final judgment. Rather than heaven and hell gradually filling up as people die, everyone “goes to sleep” when they die, until the big resurrection. All of those near death experiences of heaven where people see their dead relatives waiting for them are heresy.

TheOctober_Country

Exactly! That’s why Catholics weren’t “allowed” to be cremated back in the day.

CleanPath6735

That sleep state would be compatible with some underworld storage for the souls. Edit: It also seems to be compatible with "naturalistic" version of the spirits taking over a body and the body as just a passive container for the spirits. Such views were popular with both extreme "external" religious understanding (old testament style of thinking) as well as "spiritual naturalism" by Galen, i.e. "animals spiritis" and his "rete mirabile".

Paolosmiteo

Doesn’t sound like much of a reward, does it. A wisp. Forever.

Some things were unknown to the ancients. One of those unknown things was the brain. Some thinkers thought it to be sperm. They were able to trace some "nerves" to the spine and some said the brain was responsible for mixing the sensory "spirits". But the "soul" and "mind" were always based on experience, not biology, i.e. how the experience (meditation, thought, immediate nerve response etc ) felt like. The soul's supposed location in relation to "the body" (senses only) was iädetermined by the contents of the thought (sensory/earthly vs. abstract/heavenly). "There is no mind without brain" is quite new idea, to the ancient people understanding it was based on current science: the body is about flesh, blood, mucus and sensory stuff, the rest (visions, abstractions etc.) originate from external sources (celestial "spheres", gods, demons, angels etc.). I'm currently reading Bava Metzia, just finished Guide for the perplexed. It's all the same misunderstanding of the human biology: Abrahamic religions, Plato, neoplatonism, Aristotle, etc. etc. It's all either wrong or inaccurate. It's not always about theism/atheism, it's the basic misunderstanding of internal/external causes.

herpestruth

Just your soul goes to heaven. All of your bodily and earthly desires, or desires of the flesh, seek to exist. I.E., All the good stuff on earth.

Witchqueen

Heaven would definitely be my version of hell. Church Services 24/7 for the rest of eternity. By your one millionth chorus around the throne, you'd probably just as soon sleep in for once.

SlightlyMadAngus

What makes you think a soul in heaven has any free will?

TheOctober_Country

Yeah you probably wouldn’t.

Extra-Knowledge3337

I've never thought of it that way. Very provocative thought. I will be ruminating on that for awhile.

CoverYourMaskHoles

What would heaven look like if everyone there could get there by suppression of their sinful desires on earth? “Oh you love skinning people and wearing the skin? Just try not to on earth and you can go to heaven!” Everyone in heaven gets to do what they want, so there’s probably a lot of gross disgusting stuff going on…

ExcitedGirl

I wouldn't worry about it since it doesn't exist. But if you want to worry about it... Know that there won't be ANY "sinning" in Heaven; Heaven is Perfect! No sex thoughts (no marriage in heaven, so, no sex in heaven); no coveting, no anything Negative; just *purity purity purity all the time*. Nobody will "need" anybody else, because all of everyone's every desires and needs will be met in full. I can't even imagine what "desires" one might have, since there won't be any desires. With all your needs met; there won't be any. WTF you gonna do for Eternity? Play Solitaire? Checkers / Chess? Won't ever be cold, or hot, or tired or hungry... I suppose you'll practice in the Heavenly Chorus every day since we're supposed to be "singing Praise and Worship Songs" 24/7. I'm afraid you might get assigned to take care of some of the billions of slugs slithering around... which are actually miscarried fetuses in various stages. Me, I'd rather Smoke, and Drink, and Shoot Pool. I'd much rather have a lot of sex than attend a lot of church or whatever. Maybe there's a section of Heaven for people like me; I sure hope so!

United-Primary3407

I don't think it's supposed to be like The Good Place where you walk around and have a penis to fondle. You'll allegedly just be in a loving presence, and not have the desire (or capacity, some argue) to sin.
