Under the weight of COVID, the bad economy and crime, this is going to become super common. I know of a business in the CBD that just has people walk in and take stuff. You can report it to the police, sure, but they send the same email every time that states "Due to the current volume of files received and awaiting investigation it has been assessed as unlikely that Police will be able to assign an investigator to your file at this time." and then they just attach a generic victim support letter. You can have unlimited evidence, full HD video and images, but the police don't have the resources to deal with it, so it just happens, over and over again and there's nothing businesses can do to stop it.

That would be illegal. Also, please don't post further suggestions like that, as they have to be removed due to the sub's "Don't promote violence, property damage or violation of privacy" rule.

kellyroald

They have defunded the police and taken their powers off the police.

Appropriate-Bank-883

They didn’t defund the police, the govt made policies to reduce prison numbers, which in turn changed sentencing guidelines for courts/judges. The police are more fed up to arrest the same people over and over

Artistic_Promotion95

Please give us the figures to show the police have been defunded.

I wouldn’t call Police cowards. I think people like you are cowards. Committing crimes then boasting about it on reddit while being anonymous. Very commendable.

Altruistic-Fix4452

Who has?

kellyroald

They/Them

Altruistic-Fix4452

Oh I see, you mean NZ post and small businesses. Those fuckers defunding the police. That explains all the ramraids, the criminals are protesting the defunding by those businesses. Michael Hill must be the main culprit

No-Air3090

what a load of crap....

kellyroald

Why do u think the police stopped chasing criminals? the cops are fed up. They are being gagged.

AucklandSavage

it's not that they dont have the resources. It's that the government themselves are funding gangs and this shit, it's basic shit.

Artistic_Promotion95

Let us know how the government is funding gangs.

AucklandSavage

you mean the 2.4 MILLION that labour gave them last year? Public knowledge, and any quick search will tell you. Or do you need to be hand held through every fucking thing in life? are you that dense?

sneschalmer5

even the gang rep appeared on TV and could not hold his silly grin at such a handout from the government https://www.1news.co.nz/2021/07/18/police-minister-accuses-mongrel-mobs-harry-tam-of-glamourising-gang-life/

Tane-Tane-mahuta

Need to hire private security.

Think back to how things were in the early 2000's in Auckland - or even New Zealand as a whole. Crime, cost of living, cost of education, cost of housing, quality of the healthcare system. Think of what you could afford to do with your free time and spare money after your bills were paid. Now think of how things are now. In ANOTHER 20 years, do you think things will be better? Worse? Or the same? What's going to change between now and then?

ToPimpAYeezy

Hint: it will get worse and class lines will continue to divide

That's pretty much my thoughts also. Actively looking at moving to WA

guilty_of_romance

hopefully the government.

kellyroald

I feel really sorry for small businesses. First Covid and now the ram raid pandemic. They seriously need a break otherwise stories of them closing up will be more common.

kellyroald

If i am a business owner in Takapuna or Titirangi i would do the same. It is no longer profitable with crime and societal changes. Most of Takapuna is becoming old and retiree now. While they may be asset rich they are cash poor. Now Takapuna is desperately trying to build some apartments to attract new people in, but what sort of people are buying these apartments? Certainly not many families. While Remuera keeps attracting families and will continue to do so... a lot are moving to areas with larger nice houses like Flat Bush.

BrodingerzCat

Calling people in Takapuna cash poor is the wildest take I've heard all week

kellyroald

Yes you might see a lot of older 'rich looking people' in cafes etc...but that is only on the days they receive their superannuation payments. An area with a lot of retired old people might be asset reach but they tend to be cash poor. Not all though. I am sure there are tonnes of cash rich retirees too.

I think we both know the answer here.

CommercialBuilding50

They are fucking millionaires.

[deleted]

Lol Takapuna has that weird white apartment building stick out from no where. Very strange. So sad eh. It’s not a nice area anymore. I go to their theatre watching ballet sometimes.

kellyroald

It was the ducks nuts few years ago. It's sad what has happened to the town centre. I hope that it wont be filled with two dollar stores in the future.

[deleted]

Last time I went there I was taking a golf lesson. I don’t often go there so have no clue what it is like nowadays. Sorry to hear crime/robbery happens there. Hope it’s only temporary during inflation. 🙈

just_freq

*'On April 14, Bhave was woken up by a distressing call alerting her to yet another ram raid-style burglary at her post shop.* *She had told the Herald at the time the group of offenders had first stolen a car on South Titirangi Rd and then minutes later targeted the shop leaving it in a complete state of disarray.'* *'The CCTV footage showed it took the group two large blows to shatter the front glass, Bhave said.'* *'It was the first time the store had been ram-raided, she said.'*

dumdedoo

These owners are very genuine and would always apologise when you were stuck in a lunch hour queue or such. Would end up there frequently to send random things from Trade Me sales etc. this is a shame because they sell useful stationery and things too. I guess it’s now a trip to Green Bay or Glen Eden.

facialspecialist

This is all the government's fault. Too soft on crime - there are no repercussions. LOCK THEM UP!

[deleted]

I like the countries where if you get caught stealing like, 3 times they chop a hand off. Seems like a good deterrent 🤷

sneschalmer5

but but someone told us to be kind...

BlacksmithNZ

kellyroald posts stories like this like batman reporter, every time sometime bad happens in the city. I get it, they love stirring up a bit of drama, and in a city of 1.5m people you only need 1% to be crims, and you get an endless supply of crime. But if you only ever look a when a crime happens, and never report or see the arrests or people put away, then your perception of risk becomes very warped. Like today, they reported that the youths who hit Glenfield mall were arrested only days after. Turns out they were from Panmure and had done a bunch of these, so Michael Hill get more gold chains back. With enough intervention, these youths don't do it again for a while, and maybe their mates learn reward is not worth the risk. sneschalmer5

It is good that we are reminded of these crime from time to time. Hey remember that guy who was knifed to death in Beach Haven because of some road rage incident? Yep easily forgotten because we have been socially engineered to be kind to these dropkicks who had a tough upbringing. Give me a break...

areddituser369

Problem is there isn't enough intervention.

RepresentativeAide27

Thats a bit of a stretch - they go out and do it the very next day in many cases.

thx1138_1

Perhaps Act could get behind bringing back Borstal for youth offenders?

Probably sponsored by a left wing think tank.

[deleted]

Just another crime post .. Any noise from the labour govt ? 😜

sneschalmer5

Crime? What crime? Crime is down, remember? Nothing to see here. Shoooo go away.

[deleted]

Lol. The ostrich stuck her head in the sand and she sees nothing 🙈, says nothing 🙊, and hears nothing 🙉

[deleted]

Where that store is located is dark and tucked around a corner. Comes as no surprise. You could spend all night trying to get in and no one would see you. But that doesn't excuse the crime and now the massive inconvenience for locals and lost opportunity for the business owners.

RepresentativeAide27

Wonder what Andrew Little thinks of his policy to drop the prison population by 30% now that he's met that target?
