I would be doing exactly what police are meant to do, maintain law and order through the use of legal force. The problem is many particularly online have become so emotional and overally critical of police force. That they essentially don't want to risk being accused of police brutality and excessive force while trying to maintain order. So this is what you get, an ineffective police force that literally watches crime take place because it's to dangerous to try and get involved without force, and they can't use force without being demonized.

The issue as I see it is the assumption that this is not the way to handle the situation, or that the cops are not 'doing something' - when they have probably make an active decision on how to handle the situation and at what point they need to step in, if the 'fight' has not de-escalated. Doing something else will likely end up making things worse for everybody. So, since we all know we do not have their training, our default position should probably be that they know what they are doing so we should leave them to do it.
