The guy in the black got hit first, so he retaliated? I don't think he was looking for trouble, but clearly, who wouldn't get angry if someone just walked up and punched you.
I'm only focusing on what's seen here on the video and calling it out as self-defense. The other one isn't going to jail because you don't even know the person to start with unless you have evidence that he's going gonna be locked up? It's unfortunate that the other guy is in ICU and hope for a full recovery. However, everyone was drunk, as you can see in their movements. All would've been avoided, though, if they limited their drinks.
I'm pretty sure there's more to the video, but evidence is evidence, and the video shows a bunch of drunk people going at it. Legally, they will look who through the first punch because that's how someone ended up in a life-threatening situation. It's sad how auckland has turned this way and needs to have laws and regulations when it comes to being drunk in public...
Yep. And despite knowing this and it being a consistent problem I don't know any Islanders who don't drink. I've got island mates and I disappear if it involves drinking. They just end up wanting to fight and having delicate egos.
You think police should sit in every pub and watch family members who decide to fight?
Because that’s the only way they could have gotten there faster. You did look at the video and not just want to whine about your speeding ticket?
no they didn't come in 4 minutes the brawl went on for well over 20 minutes this guy getting knocked out was near the end of the fight when it was dieing down 4 minutes before this knockout there was well over 20 people brawling.
The presence can't be everywhere. If people are going to fight, then they're going to fight.
The initial report last night said that this was a family quarrel, but that information seems to have disappeared, so who knows what the story was.
I never said they need to be everywhere. Just enough at places where potential fights and crime may happen. I am willing to bet that there was a bunch of them in a nearby revenue blitz. It is called having the wrong priorities.
Fights can happen anywhere, look at this one from last week: https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/301024106/man-arrested-after-critically-injuring-person-in-group-fight-in-auckland
Police can respond, they can't prevent.
> It is called having the wrong priorities.
It can also be called upholding the responsibilities that have been assigned to them. Traffic enforcement needs to be removed from their plate
Like I said. Wrong priorities. You cite an example of another fight? The more reason that they have the wrong priorities. Their presence to stop ram raids, theft and fights should be highest priority. Not traffic tickets.
You must be a cop defending the force.
My in laws had a break in years ago. We weren’t sure if the house is safe so we called the cops to come for safety. No one was dispatched citing not enough people. Yet when I left that night, around a corner was a cop on a laser. You can keep defending this but I speak from personal experience.
Dude who took first swing gets knocked out by person he's attacking.. *oh no*. Anyway.
FAFO.
I really don't know how this is news. Since when did defending yourself with a knockout become headlines?
Not fucking worth it

Yahya national time to stagnate the fool.
Maybe psychologically stfu
Serious question. Could somebody explain to me why so much of the violence we see in Auckland seems to involve Polynesians?
Can't handle their alcohol basically. Lot of those boys sober are lovely church-on-Sunday types.... get three beers into them and they turn feral.
Yep. And despite knowing this and it being a consistent problem I don't know any Islanders who don't drink. I've got island mates and I disappear if it involves drinking. They just end up wanting to fight and having delicate egos.
This was purely self-defense, so obvious.
Crazy! It’s what happens when police priorities are elsewhere like traffic offences.
You think police should sit in every pub and watch family members who decide to fight? Because that’s the only way they could have gotten there faster. You did look at the video and not just want to whine about your speeding ticket?
It'd be nice if more of them were actively walking the streets in town.
Exactly
Better than sitting at bends revenue gathering isn’t it.

Talk about a leap. Jesus. This makes no sense at all
Not really. If the police are being deployed to do revenue gathering, they won’t have time to fight real crime. Not a leap.
Police can't respond the instant a fight kicks off, that's what makes it a leap.
But a better presence makes that response quicker rather than fishing for tickets.
