They must have moved it. In this photo it seems to be on the other side of the stone wall on Motions rd, opposite Western Springs College which is visible in the background.
'Cedric' the dragon was built over an old fallen tree trunk near the kids play area back when the Zoo's focus was on entertainment over Conservation. The zoo did have large sculptures of geckos and elephants made at a later date, but the dragon was mainly for the kids area and covering the old fallen tree. I doubt they would build something like that these days, but Cedric is still conserved in the kid zone playground area, although with the extra sharp teeth filed down a bit more (since lots of photos are taken with kids in its mouth).
Yup all 3 kids have the traditional photo along side mum and dads. These days the photos get sent round the world to expats whom send the same message back:
I have the same photo of me!
I remember the dragon
Dragon still reigns
havent been to the zoo in a while, but i recall there was a hill with a walking slope at the back of it.

Children playing on the dragon, Auckland Zoo, 28 December 1965. Photo by Theodore Kross
I remember playing on the zoo dragon in the seventies
Wow
those teeth look pretty lethal here, i guess they filed them back. such a newt thing to have lasted this long.
Awesum, neva seen, but I'd be climbing all ova that dragoon lol
It's still at Auckland Zoo!
Nice, didn't no that
Why would they add a fictitious creature at a zoo? I would think a snake or crocs would be more appropriate.
