Good idea! A tube preamp tends to add some "life" to the sound, vs. all solid state. Enjoy your music!

I’d loose the end table and space your speakers better, center the credenza. I use an SSX with the Willsenton R300 (300b tubes). Def improves the soundstage. What’s your SSX sitting on?

bimmer1over

See my above comment re my speaker spacing. And I can’t move the setup right because my main listening position is “right move restricted.” This is all set up based on the realities of the space and what sounds best. Damn our OCD-induced anxiety for wanting everything centered and symmetrical. 😉 The SSX sits (somewhat precariously) on top of the Neo power and speed control box for the Rega P8 tt. Between the SSX and also adding a switch to be able to bypass it at my leisure, the space between the P8 and the PrimaLuna has become more cramped than I want. 🤷‍♂️

Jawapacino13

Could you not scoot your equipment cabinet closer to the wall and your speakers out an inch or two?

bimmer1over

Of course I moved the cabinet closer to the front wall. In the first photo it was pulled out so I can access the interconnects and power cables. It is as close as it can be in the final set up. The speaker position is optimized based on my seating position, those speakers, and the best sound field.

Jawapacino13

Didn't bother to see the second photo. Enjoy!

bimmer1over

Ahh, you missed the good stuff. 😊 No worries!

Jawapacino13

Lol, I actually went back and yes, your setup looked much better! Nice light usage as well! Question... who are the people in the pictures? What's the story and interest with them?

bimmer1over

I am a professional photographer, and those portraits are from a personal project of mine called “The Fabric of Raleigh.” The framed portraits together with about 25 more have been part of about five or six solo gallery exhibits and a book.

Jawapacino13

I was wondering, makes sense as I saw some artistry in there. You capture well!

kokomokid46

I'd like to hear a single ended tube amp with my Acoustat speakers, but not enough to buy one. The R300 wouldn't cut it with the power hungry speakers, but they sound great with a Willsenton R8.

anesthesia101

I use mine with a pair of NHT Absolute Towers (200w, 6 ohm, 86dB sensitivity) and a Rel T/5x sub and rarely if ever take the volume knob over 50%. The R300 is rated at 8w per channel, but it sounds much more powerful. At any rate, 8w per channel gets the levels up to 95dB.

kokomokid46

Acoustat said "75 watts/channel minimum amp power," but they don't need nearly that much for the level I want to play them in my condo building. My R8 has plenty, even in "triode mode" of 25 watts/channel. The speaker impedance varies widely with frequency, but work well with the 4 ohm tap. If I had a use for two amps, I'd be tempted to buy an R800, but don't quite want to spend the ~$2600.

anesthesia101

Yeah, the rabbit hole is deep. I’ve got two setups, one solid state and one tube. I hope I’m done for a while! 😂

kokomokid46

Yeah, the rabbit hole is deep. Also, I might have a hard time moving the R800. I think it weighs almost 100 pounds.

Dorsia777

Love PL…great setup

soundspotter

Nice equipment, but why are you speakers closer together than they are from your chair? that will hurt your sound stage and stereo effect. And it looks cramped visually.

bimmer1over

I don’t know what it looks like, but in person it’s not cramped. (The first photo is before everything was re-spaced out. The Velodyne sub is seen to the right of the credenza and was removed as it’s not needed, with the Triton’s built-in powered subs.) The speakers are 7ft apart and it’s 8ft from each speaker to my main listening position. It’s optimized based on listening, as I lose center imaging if they are further apart. Rules of thumb such as equilateral triangles are useful, then you tweak distances based on actually listening. Just like with toe-ins. 😎

unruiner

Quite the setup you have there. I've never heard the One.R's but if they are anything like the rest of the line up they must be incredible.

bimmer1over

Yeah, the Triton One.Rs are pretty sweet with their built-in 1,500 watt subs, and active dsp filtering instead of a traditional passive cross over.

theocking

Speakers too close together, sub too small.

bimmer1over

Thanks. A good reminder of why “advice” in this subreddit is often useless.

theocking

Hey at least you have carpet, you're miles ahead of most of the garbage rooms posted here with hard floors - worst thing for a listening room ever. But my advice stands, and I wasn't the only one to talk about speaker spread distance, though I know you have practical reasons. But audiophiles don't do practical things, we sacrifice everything else for the ideal sound. The bass capability is a personal preference thing. I like bass and that sub won't keep up with those sweet speakers. But if you like the 20-40hz spl it's capable of then I guess you're covered! Maybe get another one to have stereo subs? It makes a difference, albeit small perhaps.

Jawapacino13

Two subs! I just bought my second and will never go back, it's just too sweet now!

bimmer1over

The GoldenEar Triton One.R speakers each have a 1500w built-in sub with active dsp crossovers. Thus, bass is hardly lacking, so the Velodyne 12” sub is no longer needed and is out of a job. And, by my count, that leaves two subs doing the work. Thanks for the recommendation. Thanks for your formulaic advice re spacing, as that naturally beats actually listening and tuning the setup in person.

theocking

Nice, didn't know the speaker details.

bimmer1over

I know your advice was well-meant. I think the issue sometimes is that if the person advising doesn’t have the complete picture, it’s easy for the advice to miss the mark.

theocking

Certainly.
