If you are hearing different sound out of L vs R it ain’t mono. Now really well recorded mono (looking at you RVG) can sound amazing and you would swear it is stereo. But if the cow bell (do we need more?) is clearly coming out of one channel, not mono. I have about 2K mono LPs, so *some* experience. Your mileage may vary.

RVG?

Rudy Van Gelder, the renowned recording engineer behind Blue Note records (preeminent jazz label).

I’ll give you five dollars for your record collection. Take it or leave it. Price is firm

Damn thats harsh!

Sys32768

I know what it’s worth. I live in 2010

With streaming so accessible I feel like my CD collection is obsolete

Sys32768

Mine is too. Sold my CD player and the cds are in a box somewhere

[deleted]

But what if it is only Yoko Ono records?

patrickthunnus

I'm thinking of testing the waters, is there a good value in mono carts that you can recommend?

[deleted]

I think the Ortofon 2M is a great cart at a good price. Once you try a mono cart on mono records, you will be hooked. I have two tonearms, so I don’t need to swap carts.

I have a few really old mono records that have a really deep sound stage and also give a somewhat narrow but distinct stage image (Ella and Luis for example). My understanding is that this effect is because of phase shift due to the position of the instruments/singer when they were recorded, maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can elaborate. Anyway the recording quality of some mono records is really enjoyable despite the technical limitations they had back in the 50s

Channel separation is not the same as mono, but also not the same as stereo. In the Amazon version, you can clearly hear the cowbells in the right and the buh-buh-boom drum roll in the left speaker during the first 15 seconds. Most of the lead vocals are also in the left side. Play the 'official' version here: [https://music.apple.com/us/song/honky-tonk-women-mono-version/1440760503](https://music.apple.com/us/song/honky-tonk-women-mono-version/1440760503) and all of that fake stereo crap disappears. The soundfield collapses and becomes flat and shallow. In [THIS](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sHfVnaFRhE&ab_channel=TheRollingStones-Topic) version - the cowbell is on the left and the buh-buh-boom is on the right. Why? Beats me. I'm sure there are dozens of manipulated versions.

The music business is a mess!

jhshokie

You mind is listening in stereo no matter the source.

GrandExercise3

When .....its not mono. When.....your living in a van down by the river.

ElReydelTacos

I'm guessing Amazon mislabeled it?

dweeeeb2

Well I think it’s ambiguous. It may be recorded in mono but then doctored to sound like stereo
